AN Spring Training Report: Part I

It all began at 4:30 a.m. on March 23.  My flight was leaving for Phoenix at 6 a.m. and I needed to get to the airport.  I woke up that morning realizing that I had an opportunity to make Athletics Nation unlike any team blog on the Internet.  The site was going to have access and damn it, I was going to do something with that opportunity.

The two-hour flight required some preparation and prioritization.  I wanted to get Chavez, Zito, Street and Swisher interviews at the minimum.  I figured it would be a good mix of old school A's (if old school consists of guys in their mid-20s) and new school A's.  All four players are destined to be a big part of the A's this season.

So, I needed to read and reread the questions to make sure I was prepped.  I mutter to myself, "Gotta ask Zito about that two-seamer and how he's induced so many double plays this spring.  Focus, Blez, focus."

As I'm prepping my questions, an older gentleman on the plane has a heart attack.  No kidding.  I could take this as a harbinger of things to come, but I don't.  Flight attendants are scrambling, people are turning to see what happened, yet my focus remained undaunted (the gentleman wound up being fine so I'm not that cold).  I keep whispering to myself, one shot, one opportunity to make my mark.  I know that as soon as I step off the plane and get my rental car, I'm going to need to rush to the ballpark.  I've been advised that the earlier I get to the field, the better chance I have to secure my intended targets.

I rush to the park after getting my rental car and meeting my buddy Markos.  I kind of remember how to get to Phoenix Muni from last season.

We get to the park, and I rush down to the field.  I'm a little late because a lot of the players are already on the field.  And oddly enough, there also seems to be a lot of media types.  I recognize several of them.  They're almost all from Sacramento. I see the sports guys from KCRA and UPN KMAX 31.  I'm suddenly filled with dread in realizing that I'm probably not going to get one-on-one interviews with the players.  I spot Robert Buan and Ken Korach, and having met Robert in the past, I feel comfortable enough to go over and say hello.  I'd also traded emails with Ken in the past (turns out Ken reads the site).  The two couldn't be more friendly and welcoming.  They treat me like one of the guys.  It's a small achievement for bloggers, especially sports bloggers.

Then as I'm chatting with Buan, I notice someone come out of the dugout.  It takes me a second for my brain to compute.  Holy crap, that's Peter Gammons!!!

I want to talk to him badly, so I excuse myself from Buan and wander up and introduce myself as Gammons is typing away on his Blackberry or Treo or whatever handheld it is that he has.  I tell him what a big fan of his I am and how I respect the fact that he's always digging for the reasons behind the A's moves, unlike many of his colleagues.  He is only half paying attention to me as he's finished with his message and now scanning the players all around looking for someone who can give him a nugget or something to help him.

I ask him what he thinks of the A's this year.

"I really like it.  The fifth starter battle is interesting and I think Blanton is going to do well.  Haren has looked great."

I then seize the opening.  "Peter, I run a site that covers the A's in great detail.  Would you be willing to do an interview for the site?"

"Sure.  I'd love to, but I can't now."

"Would you be willing to do it via email?"

"No problem."

Wow, I think to myself, a Hall of Fame writer has agreed to be interviewed for AN.  Beautiful.  The trip has already been a worthwhile excursion and I haven't even chatted with one of the players yet.

I spy Swisher hanging around close to the dugout.  Opportunity has arrived.  Carpe diem...

"Hey Nick, do you have a quick second?  I'm from Athletics Nation.com and I'd love to interview you."

"I'll get you in a few minutes, buddy, I promise."

Hmmmm.  Had I just been brushed off?  I can't force the issue, so it's up to Nick now.

I stand idly by until I notice Bobby Crosby get pulled aside by several TV people.  Interviews start to take place.  Darn it!  Guess I'm not going to get something by himself.  Well, at least I can ask some of my questions.

I hustle over just in time to hear one of the TV guys say, "So, who do you have in your NCAA tourney?"  Sighing loudly, I stick my tape recorder in with the microphones.

Many ask ridiculous questions like, "Bobby, I've heard that when you get called up to Oakland, people really say, you're being sent down."  It's more of a statement than a question, I guess.  Now, I'm not one to criticize regularly, but WOW, this is sports journalism in the 21st century?  God help us all.

Finally, I butt my nose in and start asking questions that aren't related to the Final Four or how great the River Cats organization is.  And what do you know, it winds up boring the TV cameras enough so they start leaving.  I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment in asking questions like, "What have you been specifically working on this spring to make sure you have a solid sophomore year?"  Nothing bores TV cameras like a player talking about the importance of staying back and trusting his hands.

This would be a recurring theme that day.  It turns out that March 23rd just happened to be Sacramento media day.  And so, players like Crosby, Byrnes, Street and Swisher, who've toiled in the Cats uni, would be target number one for these TV cameras.  Thankfully, I came armed with probing baseball questions that are guaranteed not to produce simple soundbites.

I finish up with Crosby and myself and a radio guy are the only two left.  I hadn't originally planned on interviewing Bobby, so I didn't have a long list of questions like I had for the other players.

I turn around to see Eric Chavez getting the same treatment Crosby was just getting.  So again, I stick my nose in just in time to spot one of the television "personalities" playing a tape of someone singing to Chavy.  Oh.  My.  God.  It's obviously Zito and they're going for the canned TV reaction shot.  Chavy, to his credit, plays along and laughs, "That's gotta be Zito cause he's horrible."

Let me say, I don't mind this kind of thing.  As a matter of fact, I think it's fun to do something different for the interviews, but for the love of everything green and gold, at least ask something baseball-related.  Not just Final Four questions and playing a tape of Zito singing.  Do you know anything about the team?

Any way, I pull my, "Chavy, you finally started hitting lefties last season, do you feel like you're over that criticism?" question out and again, the TV guys disperse, searching for other prey.

They find it in Nick Swisher.  And the same guy goes into his pocket for the Zito tape.  Swish isn't as kind as Chavy...he kind of looks at the man like he has three heads.  So I stick my head into the group and start asking baseball-related questions again.  Once more, the TV cameras leave and the only ones left are a few radio people and one print person.  I get an interview with the player who might give Rickey Henderson a run for his money in terms of quotability.  We talk about everything from switch-hitting to Halo 2 to Usher.  It's a natural conversation that evolves from baseball to other things...not the other way around.

I end up asking Swish if he'd be willing to check in every other week this season on AN with a diary.  He agrees to do so.  Later on that evening I would tell Billy about the upcoming Swish diaries on AN and he gives me a sly smile as if to say, "Wow, now that's gonna be entertaining."

After the success with Swisher, I wander down to the end of the dugout and spot Huston Street guarding Barry Zito while Z is signing autographs in the crowd.  Street is standing on the bullpen pitching mound, so I take a chance and head on down there.  As I get to Huston, I figure I'll have a little fun and ask him if he wants me to catch for him...barehanded and all.  He chuckles at the thought and tells me, "I just gotta make sure that I block any balls coming at Zito."

Ah, he's getting the rookie treatment.  He promises to do an interview later.

I hang around until the end of batting practice and players are going in the clubhouse when Street gets cornered by a much older reporter.  Street, being the unbelievable gentleman he is, sits down and chats with this gentleman for quite a while.  So much so that game time is rapidly approaching.  I wait patiently by, wanting to get the one-on-one time with the player likely to be a huge part of the Oakland pen for several years to come.

He wraps it up, and then asks me where I'm from, in an ultra-polite, Huston Street-kind of way.

"I actually produce the Web site AthleticsNation.com," I tell him, not expecting him to have a clue what it is.

"Oh, you mean Athletics Nation as in AN.  I read that all the time," Street replies.

My brain tries to calculate this.  Street is reading what I write about the team.  The kid from Texas with the nasty slider and remarkable charm reads AN.  He even referred to it as "AN."

The first thing out of my mouth before I can stop it, is, "Shut up!  You do not."

Nice, I just told the most pleasant person I think I've ever come in contact with to shut up.  Real good, dude.

Street just laughs and says that he'd be happy to do an interview but he really needs to get back to the clubhouse since it's so late.  I tell him I'm coming back tomorrow morning if he'll promise an interview with me then.  He says he would be happy to.

He also agrees to do diaries on AN every other week throughout the season.

Street and Swisher joining the fray here at AN.  An interview with Gammons.  Scaring off TV personalities with baseball talk.

This has been one productive day.  And there's more to come as I haven't yet gone to the Aces party.  The baseball game with the Rangers becomes secondary.  Although I spot Peter Gammons sitting with Beane behind homeplate all day long.  I wonder what they are talking about.

(Tomorrow: The Aces party and scoring a couple more interviews.  Tuesday: The first of several player interviews will run.)

Holy f'in crap, Blez.
I am really impressed.  Not just in a i'm-jealous-cuz-I'm-a-fan-and-want-access-too kind of a way, though it is that.  Not just in a I'm-a-blogger-and-I-hope-to-be-just-like-you way, though it's that too.

The more I think about what you've done here, the more I realize what an inspiration you are to all of us.  I mean, you've built this site up from nothing to the point where you're on a first name basis with...well, just about everybody.  People are rightfully reading this site before they check out MSM sources.

Again, I'm really impressed.  I would say good luck, but it's clear that you've got a lot more going for you than luck.

Should be a way cool ride
if guys come through with the diaries. Hopefully the on-the-plane heart attack wasn't a bad omen of something like...say...Street jamming his right finger typing a diary. Nice work, Blez!

Awesome job Blez
I can't wait for all the interviews, anecdotes, and opinions on what you saw.

Amazing!
You never seem to disappoint, Blez.  I love it!  AN is such a great site.. I just finished reading ACES the other night, and when I read the part about AN, I got all happy and thought, "I read that blog all the time!!" like it was me in the book.  Haha.  I can't wait for all the interviews!  Keep up the good work!
Bobby Crosby gave me a hug!! ..hands down the best moment of my life.. =)

Unbelievable!
Seriously, Blez, this entire piece has left me smiling from ear to ear.  Part of me is rather envious that you've been able to get this kind of access (do you know how many vital organs I would give up to have such a laidback and enjoyable conversation with Huston?  I'd certainly give up a kidney, that's for damn sure).  But that part is quickly overwhelmed by my own gratitude, the sheer strength of the enjoyment I gather from being able to read your own experiences in having such a conversation.  You truly represent this nation of ours well and I love being able to be a part of it.

Really, I thank you, I thank you much.  I love knowing this place is here and I hope you know that.  Keep doing what you've always been doing, it's a gift that truly keeps on giving.  And if ever you need a gofer, or just somebody to bring you coffee, shoot me an email. ;-)

awesome
This just shows that even in the internet age, where each of a million monkeys with keyboards has a blog,  if you put together a quality site, you will still attract not only legions of loyal readers, but also the attention of the mainstream media and the players themselves. Kudos to Blez (and Kos) - and, to a much lesser extent, of course, to the rest of us also - for putting together such a great site, and then continuing to make it better.

Gammons
It sounds like Gammons was brushing you off, I doubt he will come through and give you the interview. If we were RedSox Nation, however =/...

I really hope that Swisher and Street come through and do some tid-bits, though I get the feeling that it will add to the Hazing in the clubhouse for Swisher. But I think he'll like haivng a place to tell odd stories/flush out his Ego once in a while.

Maybe someone can ask Mr. Barton if he will ask his son to give us a Down in the Minor's chat. Its not something we hear a lot about every day.

But Blez, maybe you would have had more success if you hadn't followed the camera around? Were there no players isolated that you could talk to at all?

And I hope you asked Zito to improve upon his "Movement is the product of that which does not move" theory =].

I applaud your efforts.

Thanks for feeding the Athletics-Fanatics so generously. I dunno what I'd do without AN!

Very cool...
I'll just repeat the kudos heaped upon you.  And, knowing now that some A's players read the site, I may have to restrain myself from making...  shall we say, less than diplomatic comments regarding some of them.  (Until you have a Japanese translated version, though, I guess I can keep on Yabu's ass).

Wow.
Blez, that's absolutely amazing. I can't picture having the guts to do what you do, and I'm damn grateful that we get to read this blog and the interviews you're putting together. I love that you were chasing away the TV cameras asking fluff questions, that's awesome.

It's kinda weird that Street reads AN. (Hi Huston?) But man, I'm excited to hear that he and Swish are gonna be doing diaries up here -- I'm with the Beane-look, Swisher seems like he's gonna create some interesting entries.

Can't wait til Tuesday!

I can't imagine any other fan site
gets the kind of access that AN gets with its team. We should all feel lucky to be fans of a team that really embraces its fan base, and really puts forth an earnest attempt to connect with us. Impressive job, Blez.

But did you get Street to tell you his log-in ID? :) Looking forward to the rest of the interviews Blez, they sound like a good way to get hyped for the regular season.

High five
Very well done Mr. Blez, I am thoroughly impressed with everything you have acomplished.  Keep up the great work, you're really making a name for yourself.

by Furious George on Mar 28, 2005 1:44 AM PST   0 recs

i'm not surprised
that a's players read AN.  most athletes seem to be pretty obsessed with sports related news, reading the sports section of the paper, watching sportscenter, etc.

whereas sportscenter is all about the yankees and the red sox, and the chronicle focuses on bonds and the giants, this place is all a's all the time.

the analysis here is not only better, but is generally connected to the actual value of players, not just to their name recognition, where aside from chavez and zito most a's are pretty much under the radar.

and when someone here makes a statement that is illogical or factually incorrect, they're usually corrected.  that never happens with joe morgan or ray ratto.

Blez
I guess you really took my thank you letter to heart ;) Jk jk...

The person i most agree with is JSackmann. I am envious of the position you are now in. I am envious of your access. But I'm happy for you, you are living the next best thing to being an actual baseball player (if your favorite thing is baseball). And I'm just happy in general that you are kind enough to share it with the rest of us. Thank you so much.

Please ask Billy Beane if i can intern for him in 11 years :)

All the information you gave us was great. And i knew you were showing us more of your ST experience since this was titled part 1. But when i read that you went to the Aces party, i shit my pants. I was just reading last week on the A's official site about it, and i thought to myself: "i would do anything to be there!". Now good ole Blez comes back and will tell me what it was like! (i just can't get over the fact that you, probably have Billy Beane on speed dial, even IF you don't call him anyday.)

I just can't get over how amazing this website is.

Kielty, rejuvenated by his new genetically created St.Pats Day/Oktoberfest, shows us why Billy and Ohad are geniuses.

Carpe Diem, indeed
Way to go, Blez.  Interesting stuff, and well-written, too.

How cool is Blez?
He stalks the Talking Turds on TV and drive them away from our guys by asking actual baseball related questions.  I'm sure that was appreciated by the players.  But for me the most amazing part of this post (aside from how many of the guys seem to read AN) is that Blez just sorta casually mentions that he was talking with BB, like they are neighbors or something.  I seem to always say this and always mean it, Thanks for the Great Site Blez.

Player diaries?
I just hope the Diary Police don't give them a hard time... like "Hey Street, Swish already wrote about the sweep at Kansas City. Tell us something new, will ya? Blez, can you delete this diary!!?"

EEEKKK!!!!
(thud)

As I get to Huston, I figure I'll have a little fun and ask him if he wants me to catch for him...barehanded and all.

The AN Catcher for a Day contest continues. Sharon and I get to catch for Harden, you get to catch for Huston. What a world. (sigh)

One more week. That's it.

At least Blez has this week filled with recaps and interviews. That should help to speed up the waiting period.

But you know, Operation Superplayer will have to be hush-hush now. Huston is so nice, he'll probably try to rescue the players.

Rescue them?
HA! He'll die trying! (evil laughter)

(And that is not a death threat if my parole officer is reading this again. Hi Jim!)

I'm a bit disappointed I'll be gone the first few days of the season.... I'll get over it.

you're going to be GONE?!
What?!

Jennifer!

That's crazy...and what am I supposed to do? You haven't even sent me any meds to start off the season.

Don't blame me if I've gone completely psycho by the time you're back.

HEY!!
What about the five MONTHS you were gone?!?! I fell completely off the wagon! Must I remind you I ended up naked in Tijuana with an escaped convict and a pair of maracas $^#-&!$/^@* (Censored due to the graphic nature of the contents)?!?!

I'll be gone less than a week. Unless the plane goes down... (again, Jim, that isn't a threat. I'm scared of flying... and goats. Let's hope there aren't any goats on the plane. Or bunnies.)

Hey,
it's one thing to talk about lying naked on the beach, but when you mention "goats," you bring my love life into it. On another topic, has anyone seen four boots, a bag of kibble, a whip, and a leather harness?

Thank you...I 100% agree...this site and what you continue to do with it is fantastic.

Having gone through similar things myself...and I know this is tough as you have a new addition to the blez household and added financial responsibilities asspciated with it...but life advise...stick this out...the money will follow the passion.

What you are doing with your site is groundbreaking and there is no doubt in my mind that it will sort it self out.

Congrats...and I can't wait to read the upcoming posts.

Awesomeeeeeeeee
Great Job Blez.  It continually amazes me, how accessible and fan friendly that the A's team and players are.  It goes to show why all of us here at AN love our team.

You're living the dream Blez, keep up the fantastic work.  You are setting the standard for sportsblogging for the future.  I can see you blushing with embarassment, but truly, you have created a wonderful site, that we all appreciate.

Any players or coaches reading this site, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for making yourself accessible to the fans.

Damned impressive, Blez......
Looking forward to seeing the players' comments through the season. Your observations of the electronic-media jackals also confirms my decision of several years ago to stop watching local TV news (can you say "lowest common denominator"?)

Btw, I was at Phx Muny yesterday for Harden's start; he looked sharp. He and Zito will be a formidable combo at the top of the rotation; it's the 3-4-5 starters (i.e., the kids) who will determine whether '05 is a rebuilding  year, or if the green-and-gold can legitimately contend.

I was there too!
Hey Blez,
I also went to Spring Training, got back last night.  While I watched Zito's outing I thought "Wouldn't it be nice to have AN on the outfield wall just below the Oakland A's official website placard."  I'd be willing to pitch in.  Maybe next year we could make it happen.  What do you think?  At the game Rich Harden signed autographs for "like" forever.  My son wore his A's T-ball jersey and got it signed.  On the down side.  Food prices at Phoenix Municipal were more than some of the other parks, and they lost the game.

I saw Harden pitch when he was in AAA against Nashville.  I talked with him after the game.  Might be one of the nicest players I have ever met.  He thanked me for wanting his autograph!

Love it, Blez!
Be sure to let me know if you need any help; for some reason you can't make an interview, Swisher or Street needs a ghost-typer, whatever.

Sounds great
Going to be another awesome year on AN.  I'm pretty sure this puts us in a whole new class of Best Team Blog on the net.  Take that, USS Mariner!

And Blez, you're becoming a talented writer.  That was engrossing.

Can't wait to see what our Rooks have to say.

The diary I want to see
Blez, next time you're on the field could you ask Byrnes about writing a daily "Am I being traded?" diary for AN?

[dodging rotten fruit and vegetables]

But seriously, great work.  I think you're staking out new territory, somewhere between reporter and fan.  Think of how much the "pros" down there on the field with you would love to write or say whatever they want and not have to do what their editor says (like "play this Zito thing for 'em with the cameras rolling" -- my guess is that this is one reason reporters drink).

by Nick on Mar 28, 2005 9:16 AM PST   0 recs

I'd say it's more
the result of reporters drinking, but alcohol is definitely involved.

The diary I'm waiting for is the one where Hatteberg writes, "I'm starting, but I really think it should be Dan Johnson."

BTW, when you dodged the rotten fruit it hit me; thanks a lot. I thought I lived in a better neighborhood than to be the victim of a drive-by fruiting.

amazing...
it seems like just yesterday AN was a baby and now look at whats going on...

you are doing such a wonderful job blez, it really is paying off all this hard work you have been doing for so long!!!  keep up the great work with the site, its only going to get better!

the player diaries are going to be really cool to read.  this summer should be fun for AN with a lot of player/coach involvement, its a neat perspective that a lot of people dont get access to, thanks again blez for all your hard work!

All the way from the mitten... Go GVSU, GO A's!!!

I am truely envious of you Blez
Wow, What a great experience already.  And, I've only read part one of your trip.  I envy you Blez, getting to cover the A's and be around it 24/7 the way you do.  You do a great job for all of us.  I've said it before but, Thank You!!!!!!

For this site and all the hard work you do.  My life is better because of it.   Someday, maybe AN day, I will get the oportunity to thank you in person.

You Rock
Wish I could have been there with you instead of being here in Nashville.

Yippee!
We're going to get diaries from Swish and Huston Street? Three cheers for Blez!

Goodness.
Insert slow applause here.

Seriously, good job extending the credibility of the blogosphere an' all that.  Before we know it the players themselves will actually have blogs, and then the world will end.

Fantastic work
Perhaps I have been going about this all wrong.

From here on out, or until I change my mind again, the A's will win 162 games, ROY, MVP, CY Young and everything else.

BTW Blez
Remember when you got laid off (well, you probably don't want to but thats not the point) and we all told you a lot of times this is for the best? Look at you now!

If you still need a job though, try and get a computer programming job where you can stay home :)

Standing O and all that applause
Is all for you, Blez and the wonderful labor of love that AN is..and for sharing it with all us A's fans...(new and old).
I laughed so hard reading this..imagine,you had to work to get baseball questions into the mix - what a hoot!
Looking forward to lots more AN as the season starts...I can't wait to be back at the ballpark.

And, they say Polish guys aren't pushy...
If the rest of your spring training stuff is as enjoyable as what I just read... I am impressed.  I haven't seen the pictures yet...are they coming.  So, Street reads AN, shut up!!!!!!

Kudos, for your hard work and I know that you had a great time because it comes out in your writing.

Have you ever thought about writing a book about AN and the people that are in it?

Great job, Blez...and way to give it to the TV guys... I can't wait for more...

Christ.........Blez...
Well done, Blez.
I'm really lovin' this blog and the access you have created for us all.  You deserve a "Bash Borthers" forearm smash and a raise.

I'm bringing up the topic of AN party before the opening game 4/11, what do you think?

Wow
I mean, really, that's all that's left to say at this point.  It was great enough just to find a site like this devoted to my favorite team. And it was good.

Then there were great interviews with people indirectly connected to the team. And it was great.

Then there were great interviews with people connected to the actual running of the team. And it couldn't get better.

Now there are going to be interviews and diaries with/by the people who are actually the team?! I have run out of superlatives (sp?) to adequately express just how wonderful this site is and how awesome you are Blez.

Kudos
Thank you Blez.  It's like having your best friend in the clubhouse and on the field.  Giving you the low down everyday.  Thank you for sharing everything with us.  Keep up the GREAT work!

Congrats and Thanks
AN is a daily read for me.  I feel like I'm in some sort of secret club.  Reading about how you chatted with players, tv personalities and our fabulous GM makes me feel like I was there too.  I am so proud and happy for you, Blez.  Keep up the great "work" - chilling with players is work? - and chalk me up for an XL and a L hoodie.
