Noose Tightens on Barry

The Chronicle reports today that a woman named Kimberly Bell testified before the BALCO grand jury last week that she was involved with Bonds for 9 years and that he told her that he used steroids:

She apparently has tapes, receipts, and provided intimate details of Bonds's physical reaction to steroids: acne all over his back "and other symptoms consistent with steroid use." He also became quick-tempered and aggressive, she says.

She is planning to write a book, according to the Chronicle, and the article has other sleazy little details: for example, Bonds refused to spend any of his salary on a new home, but instead would lock himself in a room for hours signing baseballs that he would sell to finance the home. He made a point of saying that he took steroids orally, rather than by injection. He also demanded that the woman sign a confidentiality agreement after they broke up -- good thinking, Barry! -- and paid for her company before they broke up.

This caught my attention
JRBH nice find, I read this too this morning and what caught my eye was: "because whatever he was using made the muscles grow so fast that the tendon could not keep up." Sounds familar anyone? How many Tommy John surgeries are there now a days? How many torm ligaments, tendons etc. Makes you think.

Amazing insight to Lamar here. We will never know the truth, because he will use his money to slander and degrade her, and she is obviously out for profit. But as a Lamar hater, I will choose to believe most of it, cause he does not hide it well. Can we get another "State of the Lamar Union?" Oh please Lamar, tell me why I am so wrong in the way I lead my life...oh please.

Dude, this is quite speculative.  I used to be a hammer thrower, and in college, I doubled my weight by working out for 4 hours a day without ever taking anything (I mean, what would be the point for a division III athlete to take anything).  And I later tore my ACL and lateral meniscus due to long term wear and tear from the stress of working out while weighing a lot.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to do things like double you body mass in four years, and more than double your strength in that time, without taking drugs to do it.  It just takes consistent dedication, and good coaching so that you minimize injury.

Dude
No doubt Dude. College athletes do it all the time. Actually most people 20-25 can do that with some deidcation, I have known allot of people that worked really hard to get fit the way they wanted. I have also known allot of people that would rather shoot up or pop a pill or creatine to get what they want. My only point is there is allot that we do not know, for a fact, athletes are considered finely tuned, where anything can cause a tweak, and adding muscle mass too fast can cause serious problems with your body and land you on the DL, and there seems to be allot of people getting these tweaks, are they all on the juice? Of course not, I am not implying that. All I am saying is the numbers of people getting help is allot higher then we all think.

Congrats on doing it right dude, atleast you can honestly look in the mirror. Big Mac can't and Lamar fools himself into thinking he can. Who else is out there that we don't know about?

Noggin
Hamstrings, tendons, whatever. The real indication of Barry's using?

HIS HEAD IS THE SIZE OF A MEDICINE BALL!

Compare and contrast with photos of him when he was a young man with the Pirates. Now, I don't know any workout regimen that muscles up your noggin, so I've gotta think that there's something mighty unnatural going on with (and in?) that head of his.

Mr. Met has a smaller head than Bonds.

Lamar
I'm pretty sure that sets the record for the most times "Lamar" appears in a paragraph ever.

And how weird is it
that Bonds and our own Billy Beane share the same middle name?

I don't care much for the Giants
or Barry for that matter. But, he's one of the greatest hitters ever. That's the bottom line.

by kvn on Mar 20, 2005 4:27 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not really
Let's not get carried away, prior to 1998, in his core years,  Bonds was a very good baseball player, hit 25-30 HR's, sometimes he hit .300 sometimes not, a good, maybe even a very good hitter, but one of the greatest, hardly.

what??????
"prior to 1998, in his core years"

how were these his "core years" when he was better after those years???? I think you are speaking of core years in terms of a typical ball player's age. But, Bonds is anything but typical.

IMO he is one of the greatest gitters of all time PERIOD

your arguement does nothing to disuade me.

Now, i'm sick of defending Barry.

just as guilty as OJ
Because after '98 he was probably juicing, so in my mind (and i might take heat for this), everything barry did after 98 i could care less. Now i'm not saying he's not a good baseball player, or one of the best hitters in the game but come on he "should" be on the downside of his career after '98, then all the sudden he goes from Stud to Monster? I don't buy it one bit, he's just as guilty as OJ.(just as lucky as him too)

he may be just as guilty
but the crimes are hardly comparable.

Just as guilty as OJ?
High-larious comparing Barry to OJ...He might indeed have juiced as an assortment of others from his era have done. Meth/coke/greenies/red juice (what am I missing here?) and who knows what else have been part of the landscape of baseball since I've been a fan but I fail to recollect any white broncos or murders associated with Barry.  And while I'm an A's fan and have been since back in my Boston days, by some stroke of fortune have been at Pac Bell for a number of Barry's significant home runs and cheered as loud as anyone there. Am I the only one out here that doesn't really care about the steroids issue?

White Bronco
You don't remember the "clear" cream that barry says he didn't know was steriods(sure)? They all went to the same trainer. Barry put on a lot of muscule later in  his career.  His EX just came out and said he did them... the writing is on the wall, just read it. It sucks.

The issue really isn't that Bonds cheated
It's that MLB and its players have the audacity to believe that they are bigger than the US government.  Baseball is very international, and its behavior and practices flaunt the law.  The Feds and the Senate are conspiring to teach all professional sports and their stars a lesson, and I think it's much needed.  If the administrators continue to bury their collective heads in the sand about steroids, the government can and should remove baseball's antitrust status.  Baseball has made Bonds very rich, but it has not elevated him above the law.  Admitting steroid use would have subjected Bonds to public scorn (I have a lot of respect and empathy for Giambi), but lying to the Feds is considered a much more serious transgression than cheating at baseball.

btw, jrbh, can I say "I told you so?"

Bonds in the Times today
The New York Times reports today (Tuesday) that among other things, Bonds arranged ("conspired" is such an ugly word) with his girlfriend to make cash deposits -- the money from autographed balls -- to banks to avoid the $10,000 federal reporting requirement. That's a felony, and one the Feds take very seriously.
