Canseco says he injected McGwire with steroids

Jose Canseco has apparently decided to name as many juicy names in his new book as he possibly can.

This New York Daily News article says that Canseco, in his new tell-all book, will say that he injected Mark McGwire with steroids "in the rear end numerous times in clubhouse bathroom stalls."

According to the Daily News article, Canseco also says he watched Giambi and McGwire inject each other with 'roids, and that after being traded to the Texas Rangers, he taught Pudge Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, and Juan Gonzalez how to use 'roids.

Star-divide

From the Daily News article:

The longtime Oakland star, who made a brief appearance with the Yankees in 2000, claims he introduced steroids to the game and injected fellow Bash Brother Mark McGwire in the rear end numerous times in clubhouse bathroom stalls.

He also describes watching disgraced Yankee slugger Jason Giambi and McGwire injecting each other when they both played with the Oakland A's, and says he personally taught All-Star and potential Hall of Famers Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro and Juan Gonzalez to use 'roids after he was traded to the Texas Rangers in 1992.

Canseco claims the team's general managing partner at the time - an aspiring politician named George W. Bush - had to have been aware that his players were using performance-enhancing drugs but did nothing about it.

The NYDN article says that Jose thinks that 'roids are great for baseball, and everyone should use 'em:

The book is an homage to steroids, and Canseco says that he not only used them, but that all players should. He concedes that kids shouldn't use them and no one should abuse the muscle-building drugs, but Canseco practically offers a how-to guide to steroids and human growth hormone.

He also says he never would have made it to the major leagues - much less become the 1988 American League MVP - without their help.

I'll say this for ol' Jose -- he's always been entertaining.  I still chuckle when I remember him leaving a loaded handgun on the seat of his unlocked Ferrari when he went to a doctor's appointment.  Or the time when he was pulled over for speeding in the middle of the night and the cop wrote him up for going 95, and Jose signed the ticket, crossed off "95" and wrote in "135" and told the cop, "That's how fast I was really going."

no reason to not believe him
sure he's a shady character, but only a delusional person would believe that mac wasn't on steroids when canseco and giambi definitely were.

i personally think all power hitters from the mid-80s until 04 should be kept out of the hall of fame...

Eddie Vedder? Really?
Not familiar with the song, but can I assume it was released after 1988?  That was the year that former Texas Gov. Ann Richards used that line to describe Bush I during her speech at the Democratic National Convention.

I agree with Jose
These guys are all adults.  Performance-enhancing drugs have been a part of the game long before steroids came along and they will only get more sophisticated (and, perhaps, undetectable).  As the illicit drug trade has shown (and, for that matter, any form of prohibition) the black market always figures out a way around the rules.  Wringing your hands over it is naive.

I wonder what will happen when the first genetically engineered player breaks the home run record?

Am I the only one who thinks that, with all that's happened and will hopefully happen re: steroids, it's kind of comforting that we didnt sign any "big bats" this offseason?

no big bats
I don't think it's a coincidence at all.  I've noted on other threads how one of the patterns of BB's recent acquisitions is to get hitters who look good in every category except power (Kotsay, Kendall, Ginter, Thomas).  It looks to me like he thinks power is overpriced, but all other aspects of hitting aren't.

It may well be that part of the reason that power is overpriced is that a lot of guys who had power for years aren't going to have so much of it from now on....

Jose is an asshole
Consider the source.  It isn't that any of this would surprise me, if true.  It's just that he has been threatening to "tell all" because he was pissed a few years ago that no one would sign him to a MLB contract.  Basically, he is claiming that every big slugger he's played with used it.  Is he trying to boost sales of his book or is he telling the truth?

I tend to think along these lines as well
Conseco has absolutely no credibility and it seems much more likely that the names in his book have more to do with increasing sales than the truth.  Which is not to say that he isn't right, only that you can't base a decision about a player using steroids solely on the appearance of his name in this book.

By the way, did anyone happen to listen to the Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio about 3 years back when Conseco came on and first announced he was going to write this book?  At the time he sounded like someone who was angry at not having a contract and who wanted to bring everybody down with him.

Unless if somebody steps forward and...
...independantly confirms this, then I'm not believing it.  Jose Canseco's a blowhard and he's probably making stuff up to make himself look good.  Kinda like Pete Rose releasing his book and his "apology" right before the HOF inductions to steal Eck and Molitor's thunder.  Jose Canseco is out for only one person, himself, and that makes him untrustworthy.  Now if anybody else of the Bash Brother-era A's says something about McGuire and steroids, then it's probably true.  But Canseco?  I have my doubts.

If you're not old enough to have watched Canseco
play in Oakland,(without staying up past your bedtime, that is,)then your opinion doesn't mean much. Whatever your personal opinion is, you're certainly entitled to it --  but it's laughable to hear teenagers and those of you in your early 20's talk like you know what was up in the 80's and early 90's.  You have absolutely no clue. I'm not a big fan of what Canseco let himself become -- but if you think for a second Mac wasn't juicing, you're as naive as they come.  Canseco busted his ass for the A's -- I've never heard a teammate say a bad thing about him. That counts -- not what you think you know.

Oh SNAP!
Busted!

You caught me, yes I did witness Canseco and the Bash Brothers era in the flesh at the pre-Mt. Davis Coliseum, but I wan't allowed to stay up past my bedtime back in those days.  Yes I'm one of those fans in the early 20's.

However, I'm not going to dis-regard Canseco's contributions to the A's.  However, I'm questioning his current credibility.

Yes, it's plausible that Mac juiced.  But  always thought that thanks to his doctor brother he'd always helpd Mac skirt the boundaries of steroids like the Andro thing.  I would have thought that Mac would be too smart yo do 'roids outright.

All I'm saying is that I'm believing Canseco until somebody backs up his claim.

I'm inclined to think it's true
Regardless of the fact that Canseco has zero credibility at this point, I don't think he's lying about this. He's probably embellishing things here and there, but I think it's naive to think McGwire didn't take steroids.

This from a guy who will never forget where he was when Kirk Gibson ruined my life, and a guy who wore #25 and played first base in high school and college because Mark McGwire was his hero. (In little league I wore #4 and played Third Base because Carney is my favorite player of all-time, and he didn't do drugs, dammit)

I wish there was a way to prove it one way or another.

Answer me this question:  Would you let Jose Canseco anywhere near you with a needle?

What next, Canseco is going to claim that he performed 17-hour surgery to separate Siamese twins?

by floyd on Feb 6, 2005 11:17 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

The most laughable thing...
...is the image of Canseco and McGwire standing together in a bathroom stall, injecting steroids into each other's bums.  How the hell did you guys fit in their Jose?

I love Big Mac, and I would not be surprised if he did use steroids.  But I won't believe it just because Canseco says it.  He has everything to gain and nothing to lose by implicating all these big names in his book.

And for those of you who said this, it is NOT naive to think Big Mac got big through legal means.  There are plenty of substances on the market which will pump you up without you having to break the law (andro being one of them at the time).  Assuming that McGwire was juicing just because he got huge is irresponsible and stupid.

by nickolai on Feb 7, 2005 1:40 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Stupid?
Sure, if you think the only evidence that he did anything is the fact he got big...that may be stupid. But what of the fact his "best buddy/little brother" and protege Giambi has admitted to doing it? And his bash brother, too?

After reading the quotes from Dave Mckay, Tony LaRussa, and Terry Steinbach in the paper today I accept the possibility that maybe Mac achieved everything thru a crazy-disciplined workout regimen. But you can't deny that there's a lot of circumstantial evidence that he did something illegal.

All we've got to go on is his word, and McGwire says he didn't do anything illegal. Canseco says he did. Who's telling the truth? We'll probably never know.

by Dog Days on Feb 7, 2005 9:16 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

guilty until proven innocent?
The fact that Giambi and Canseco used steroids does not cement McGwire's guilt.  The only circumstancial evidence is Canseco's testimony, and I don't think he carries much credibility.

If it comes down to Canseco's word vs. Big Mac's, why am I naive in choosing to believe McGwire?

Again, I wouldn't be surprised if Mac juiced, but it will take a little more than Jose's tell-all book to convince me.

Could the three fit in one stall?
Could these three guys really fit into one bathroom stall?  Or even two of them?  Something about Jose, Mark & Jason slinking into a bathroom stall to inject each other's rear ends just steps a little bit lower than I care to dwell on.  I hope Canseco is simply chasing the dollar by creating the sleazist scandal he can come up with.

Code of Silence
What I don't get is why players and coaches, including Tony LaRussa, continue to cover-up for Mark McGwire.  Whatever he was on, the guy looked like he was gonna pop like a baloon back in 1998.  Sure, Canseco has less brains than the average household pet, but his accusations do make some sense.  Just because the guy's an idiot doesn't mean he's lying (this time).

Code of silence, dude. Code of silence.

You can be 'roided up, be inviting your bookie into the clubhouse, be showing DVDs of yourself beating your wife, be selling crack to third graders in the stands behind the dugout -- but so long as you don't tell on the sleazy stuff everyone else is doing, you're ok, jack.

Until he started opening his mouth and saying unpleasant things about the real inside baseball, Canseco was merely a "character." He didn't become a bad person until he broke the code of silence.

LaRussa, for as smart and admirable a guy as he is, is still one of the boys.

Motive?
Here's what I don't like.  Canseco revealed some big skeletons in people's closets.  Why?  To help his teammates get help?  To make a stand against steroid use?  No, it was for money, publicity, and probably spite.  I'm for MLB cracking down on steroid use, and I like steroid users to be "outed", but Canseco is a self-centered, vindictive prick for doing this.  I doubt (hope?) most of us here would reveal secrets of teammates or friends for selfish-gain.

"Born on third base..."
is actually a line from a speech by then Texas Gov. Ann Richards, describing W.'s father. I don't know the Pearl Jam song that uses it, but I'm sure Vedder, who is active in lefty politics, got it from that.

Expect McGwire not to sue. Truth is an absolute defense in libel and slander cases.

Dave Stewart
this is probably as close as he can come to corroborating canseco's allegations without breaking "the code"
from today's sf chronicle article:

However, ex-A's pitcher Dave Stewart wouldn't say Canseco's accusations weren't true.

"I could never say 'Josie' is a liar," Stewart said. "I don't like his work ethic, and I don't like him as a teammate. But one thing I can't say about him is he's a liar.

"As far as what Josie's saying, I can't deny it or verify it. I'm not going to pretend it didn't happen because I don't know. We weren't in the same circles, but I'd have to say he definitely knows what's going on in his circle. Nobody I associated with on the team was a steroid user (among the players Stewart mentioned: Lansford, Rickey Henderson, Dave Henderson and Dennis Eckersley).

"If this is all made up, he'll suffer some serious damages. But if you're an admitted steroid user, believe me, you'd know who uses them."

by xbhaskarx on Feb 7, 2005 9:30 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

That Stew quote...
...really got my attention, too.

I accept that McGwire worked really hard, but that's one of the things steroids are supposed to be for: they allow your body to do more work than would be possible if you were steroid-free. At this point, it's almost impossible for me to believe that McGwire didn't cheat.

The "Chronicle" also had what we who remember the Nixon days remember as a "non-denial denial" from McGwire. That is, a phrase that sounds like it's a denial, but, if you parse it, actually isn't.

those who don't believe
those who don't think mcgwire used roids must fall into one of two categories, people who are delusional / stupid, and those who were big fans of his and won't be convinced without videotape and dna evidence, and maybe not even then.  i'm reminded of a certain chapelle show episode on oj simpson, michael jackson, and r kelly.

the one thing i don't believe is canseco's claim that he didn't have sex with madonna, but who can blame him for lying about that...

Yikes
Calling anyone who doesn't believe Canseco an idiot is a bit hasty eh?  Sorry but just because Jose says so doesn't mean I'm buying.  I wouldn't be suprised that he used but again, sorry, I need more than just Canseco saying so to go "oh yea it must be true".  Lets not jump to conclusions right away.
