Canseco says he injected McGwire with steroids
Jose Canseco has apparently decided to name as many juicy names in his new book as he possibly can.
This New York Daily News article says that Canseco, in his new tell-all book, will say that he injected Mark McGwire with steroids "in the rear end numerous times in clubhouse bathroom stalls."
According to the Daily News article, Canseco also says he watched Giambi and McGwire inject each other with 'roids, and that after being traded to the Texas Rangers, he taught Pudge Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, and Juan Gonzalez how to use 'roids.
From the Daily News article:
The longtime Oakland star, who made a brief appearance with the Yankees in 2000, claims he introduced steroids to the game and injected fellow Bash Brother Mark McGwire in the rear end numerous times in clubhouse bathroom stalls. He also describes watching disgraced Yankee slugger Jason Giambi and McGwire injecting each other when they both played with the Oakland A's, and says he personally taught All-Star and potential Hall of Famers Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro and Juan Gonzalez to use 'roids after he was traded to the Texas Rangers in 1992.
Canseco claims the team's general managing partner at the time - an aspiring politician named George W. Bush - had to have been aware that his players were using performance-enhancing drugs but did nothing about it.
The NYDN article says that Jose thinks that 'roids are great for baseball, and everyone should use 'em:
The book is an homage to steroids, and Canseco says that he not only used them, but that all players should. He concedes that kids shouldn't use them and no one should abuse the muscle-building drugs, but Canseco practically offers a how-to guide to steroids and human growth hormone. He also says he never would have made it to the major leagues - much less become the 1988 American League MVP - without their help.
I'll say this for ol' Jose -- he's always been entertaining. I still chuckle when I remember him leaving a loaded handgun on the seat of his unlocked Ferrari when he went to a doctor's appointment. Or the time when he was pulled over for speeding in the middle of the night and the cop wrote him up for going 95, and Jose signed the ticket, crossed off "95" and wrote in "135" and told the cop, "That's how fast I was really going."

Eddie Vedder? Really?
Another Richards gem, on Bush's tendency to mangle the English language (apparently, it's genetic):
"He can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth."

It may well be that part of the reason that power is overpriced is that a lot of guys who had power for years aren't going to have so much of it from now on....

I tend to think along these lines as well
By the way, did anyone happen to listen to the Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio about 3 years back when Conseco came on and first announced he was going to write this book? At the time he sounded like someone who was angry at not having a contract and who wanted to bring everybody down with him.

If you're not old enough to have watched Canseco

Oh SNAP!
You caught me, yes I did witness Canseco and the Bash Brothers era in the flesh at the pre-Mt. Davis Coliseum, but I wan't allowed to stay up past my bedtime back in those days. Yes I'm one of those fans in the early 20's.
However, I'm not going to dis-regard Canseco's contributions to the A's. However, I'm questioning his current credibility.
Yes, it's plausible that Mac juiced. But always thought that thanks to his doctor brother he'd always helpd Mac skirt the boundaries of steroids like the Andro thing. I would have thought that Mac would be too smart yo do 'roids outright.
All I'm saying is that I'm believing Canseco until somebody backs up his claim.

I'm inclined to think it's true
This from a guy who will never forget where he was when Kirk Gibson ruined my life, and a guy who wore #25 and played first base in high school and college because Mark McGwire was his hero. (In little league I wore #4 and played Third Base because Carney is my favorite player of all-time, and he didn't do drugs, dammit)
I wish there was a way to prove it one way or another.

The most laughable thing...
I love Big Mac, and I would not be surprised if he did use steroids. But I won't believe it just because Canseco says it. He has everything to gain and nothing to lose by implicating all these big names in his book.
And for those of you who said this, it is NOT naive to think Big Mac got big through legal means. There are plenty of substances on the market which will pump you up without you having to break the law (andro being one of them at the time). Assuming that McGwire was juicing just because he got huge is irresponsible and stupid.
by nickolai on Feb 7, 2005 1:40 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Stupid?
After reading the quotes from Dave Mckay, Tony LaRussa, and Terry Steinbach in the paper today I accept the possibility that maybe Mac achieved everything thru a crazy-disciplined workout regimen. But you can't deny that there's a lot of circumstantial evidence that he did something illegal.
All we've got to go on is his word, and McGwire says he didn't do anything illegal. Canseco says he did. Who's telling the truth? We'll probably never know.

guilty until proven innocent?
If it comes down to Canseco's word vs. Big Mac's, why am I naive in choosing to believe McGwire?
Again, I wouldn't be surprised if Mac juiced, but it will take a little more than Jose's tell-all book to convince me.

Code of Silence

Omerta
You can be 'roided up, be inviting your bookie into the clubhouse, be showing DVDs of yourself beating your wife, be selling crack to third graders in the stands behind the dugout -- but so long as you don't tell on the sleazy stuff everyone else is doing, you're ok, jack.
Until he started opening his mouth and saying unpleasant things about the real inside baseball, Canseco was merely a "character." He didn't become a bad person until he broke the code of silence.
LaRussa, for as smart and admirable a guy as he is, is still one of the boys.

Dave Stewart
from today's sf chronicle article:
However, ex-A's pitcher Dave Stewart wouldn't say Canseco's accusations weren't true.
"I could never say 'Josie' is a liar," Stewart said. "I don't like his work ethic, and I don't like him as a teammate. But one thing I can't say about him is he's a liar.
"As far as what Josie's saying, I can't deny it or verify it. I'm not going to pretend it didn't happen because I don't know. We weren't in the same circles, but I'd have to say he definitely knows what's going on in his circle. Nobody I associated with on the team was a steroid user (among the players Stewart mentioned: Lansford, Rickey Henderson, Dave Henderson and Dennis Eckersley).
"If this is all made up, he'll suffer some serious damages. But if you're an admitted steroid user, believe me, you'd know who uses them."

That Stew quote...
I accept that McGwire worked really hard, but that's one of the things steroids are supposed to be for: they allow your body to do more work than would be possible if you were steroid-free. At this point, it's almost impossible for me to believe that McGwire didn't cheat.
The "Chronicle" also had what we who remember the Nixon days remember as a "non-denial denial" from McGwire. That is, a phrase that sounds like it's a denial, but, if you parse it, actually isn't.
