Today's Hudson Quote - Ouch!

From today's Chronicle:

In Kissimmee, Fla., Tim Hudson was getting used to his first full spring training with the Atlanta Braves. He had spent his entire major league career with Oakland, where he pitched alongside Mark Mulder and Barry Zito, before he was dealt to the Braves on Dec. 16.

"This clubhouse is a lot different," Hudson said. "Our clubhouse in Oakland was more of a frat house, and here it's all business. I guess that's why the Braves have been as successful as they've been."

This comes from a guy
Who got in a bar fight the night before he was starting a playoff gmae.

Wow...that's what it has come to.
Horrible thing to say about a guy who was nothign but great for the franchise.  Lets remember they dealt him, he didnt sign elsewhere or ask to be dealt.  I will be rooting hard for Huddy all year.

Huddy
Whoa there partner, that's not entirely correct. Huddy wanted to be traded. That's why he made the demand of a March 1st dealine to the A's.  He knew that the A's weren't going to be pressured into making a deal with him without seeing him pitch during the regular season.

In fact, the rumor was that Huddy never intended to resign with the A's.

I think the world of Tim Hudson.  He truly is "a gamer."  His competitive fire is something I wish more players had.  But he has dollar signs in his eyes knowing he has a huge contract coming to him from someone. And it may not be the Braves since he has given them the same March 1st deadline.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if Tim Hudson winds up in pinstripes or at Fenway Park.

Suddenly occurs to me
that Hudson has gone from the AL's biggest postseason underachievers to the NL's.

by Nick on Feb 19, 2005 1:43 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bingo
The Braves are the A's of the NL.

Which is why Hud's comment is dumb.  It would make sense only if the Braves were not the postseason choking dogs they are.

OOOOOOOUUUUUUUCCCCCCHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Sounds like Huddy is venting a little bit...  I'm sure he'd still love to be in the frat house than the office.  I think that he's done enough for Oakland that we can let this slide.  But just for the record...  (Oakland is on the fast track to becoming the Braves.  Built on the draft and built on pitching...  but the Braves spend twice as much.  I wonder if that has anything to do with it?? - note the sarcasm.)

by brenarlo on Feb 19, 2005 1:50 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ouch?
He didn't say anything bad about the A's. We've long known and celebrated the fact that we have a fun "frat house" atmosphere in the clubhouse. He's getting old and doesn't fit in the a frat anymore.
Relax alright don't try to strike everyone out. Strikeouts are boring besides that they're fascist. Throw some ground balls it's more democratic.

don't get me wrong...
I'm not all bent out of shape...  just look at what i wrote...  BUT, obviously he thinks that a business attitude is whats got the braves all their success.  Saying that implies that that's the difference between being a good team and being a championship team.  He probably didn't know it at the time, but now he does.

by brenarlo on Feb 19, 2005 3:20 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It implies nothing
except that he wants to make a good impression with his new team.

l agree devo
hey people, lets not get too bent about this comment. new team, new teammates, new season- huddy wanting to make a good impression.

no biggie here.

I'm not especially bent out of shape
I just think what he said was a bit hypocritical. As of right now, I'm over it.

by jmoney on Feb 19, 2005 2:48 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

how successful?
Let's see: in the last five years, the Braves have been to the postseason four times, to the World Series zero times. In the same period, the A's got to the postseason four times, to the World Series zero times.

I'm glad someone's finally explained the huge difference in success between the two teams. Without even mentioning that the Braves' payroll is 50% higher.

by matthias on Feb 19, 2005 2:27 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Um
I could be mistaken, but haven't the Braves won the division like 10 times in a row? Pretty sure they've been in the playoffs the last 5 years.

by RichardP on Feb 19, 2005 2:33 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Success
The Braves have been to the playoffs i think for 14 years in a row...  as much as i love the A's...  i think that the Braves have been more successful.  I think winning the division 14 years in a row is better and harder to do than winning 1 WS.  I know it's all about winning the ring...  but any team that makes it to the playoffs can win it...  it's getting there that's the hard part...  just ask BB.

by brenarlo on Feb 19, 2005 3:17 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

misunderstood
i agree with devo.. if anything, i would gleam from huddy's statement a bit of remorse. I think people are way too defensive and about some things. Where would you rather be if you were hudson, a loose clubhouse or yankees volume 2? saying "i guess..." seems to me to be justifying a situation that he is not that excited about on first arrival.
Maybe something i haven't even heard of before...

by slapnuts on Feb 19, 2005 2:40 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wasn't hudson one of the biggest pranksters
in the Oakland clubhouse which made it a "frat house" environment?

Hmm...
It seems to me that he misses the 'frat house environment'. I'd rather it be like that than all buisness. That can get boring. Then again, if it gets you to the World Series, then it must work, right? Too bad the Braves haven't won recently.

I don't take the "Ouch" offense to this. Maybe you guys are just reading between the lines in a different way.

Hey! ...How did the book report do?
Sorry, I missed those posts earlier.
I think another good grabber might have been

The book report?
What book report? Whoops.... JK

I haven't turned it in yet. It's not due for two (?) weeks I think. We had so many projects and essays (I think 8 in 2 1/2 weeks) that she pushed the due date forward a week.

That's a nice opening sentence... I like, I like. Thanks for asking about the report. It's fun relating to A's to my school work instead of blabbing nonstop about it in an unrelated class (like say, French). Still needs some tweaks here and there but overall, it's really good. At least I think so. My teacher is too picky when it comes to essays and reports. Are all teachers like that, Nico? I had to rewrited an entire essay twice because she didn't like it. Ugh. At least it's preparing me for the journalism world. :)

Huddy
I don't think Huddy has any ill-will towards the A's. I mean, the guy has to say something good about his new team, right? He can't just March into the Atlanta clubhouse and spout of quotes to the effect of:

"Our clubhouse in Oakland was more like a frat house, here it's all business. Damn, this place is boring."

The A's and Braves have been more or less equally successful in the past few seasons with their different clubhouses.

I think we're getting a little too defensive on this one.

Go Beach.

I'm not hurt by this either
We all know Huddy liked the frat house, but he's older now, and probably sees it differently.

by Hegenberger Road on Feb 19, 2005 4:50 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Huddy
I don't think Huddy's comment was meant to bring any harm to the A's. It's pretty much common knowledge that our clubhouse is like a frat house anyway.
I couldn't resist and i went to the Braves site today.  I thought i was over the Hudson trade, but the pictures of him in the Braves jersey were really hard to look at :( He still has the same number though.  Mulder's new number is 30! Whaaat?  He just doesn't seem like a "number thirty" kinda guy.

The way I see it
It's kinda like breaking up with a girlfriend, who gradually got fat as the relationship went on, and then having her tell all of your friends how much you sucked as a boyfriend.

And then seeing her at a bar on some rich guys arm, having lost all the weight, and a new boob job to go with her new body.

And original, too
Except that's what Bill Simmons has bee writing about Roger Clemens for years.

Simmons
Ok, let me be the first on the net to say...

F- Bill Simmons.

He is out of material. His patriots won the super bowl, and his red sux won the world series. He has NOTHING to bitch about anymore.

Oakland is at least over 10 years without a championship. I hate Boston and I hate people still pulling the "feel sorry for me" card.

If you really wanna go there...Brewers, Padres, D-Rays, Cubs, White Sox, Mets, Tigers, Rangers have an arguement. But SHUT THE F UP about boston.

the rest of the quote if anyone cares
"It's a lot different," Hudson said. "In Oakland it was kind of a frat house atmosphere. Here it's all business, which is great. I love it. I think it's a big reason why they've been as successful as they have been. It's pretty low key. I don't know if I have to worry about too many practical jokes being played on me. That's good. You always had to watch your back in Oakland."

by kat on Feb 19, 2005 6:25 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It makes a statement ...
I don't think Hudson was taking a shot at Oakland, however I DO think what he said makes a statement.  I think the "frat house" atmosphere has hurt the team at times ....especially come post-season time.  Don't get me wrong -- I like the fact that guys have fun playing the game.. they should -- but I feel like there has certainly been a lack of intensity at times when the team needs it most.  Going 0-9 in "win and advance" play-off games is beyond bad luck. It's just flat out embarassing.  That's really, really, really, difficult to do.  That should be up there with Joe D's hitting streak, and Cal Ripkens games-played streak.  And I'm sorry, but I feel as if the team had just a few guys who "cared" a bit more, things might have been different ... at least once, for cryin' out loud! Other than Tejada, (and Hudson, I'll give him that,) there hasn't been one other guy that I felt like it really hurt him when we dumped ...again!!!! I can't help but feel that a little less "frat house" and a little more "business" might have gotten us past the first round.  Just my two cents.

i would say
that the red sox have a very similar clubhouse to the A's, and they won the world series!  huddy's comments are being blown out of proportion and so is this whole laid back thing...the yankees are "professional" and they havent won in a couple years

the only thing that matters is that ONE team at the end of the year (not just making the playoffs) that ends their season with a win and then everyone will start arguing that is what you have to do to win, but in actuality every year there is a different model that wins and every team should stick to their agenda and ignore how other teams are doing their work ... atlanta may have 13 division titles in a row, but they have only one WS and that really is the only win that matters

All the way from the mitten... Go GVSU, GO A's!!!

The Red Sox .....
have a few guys that look like they clown around, but for the most part, their guys are all business. Schilling, Martinez, Varitek, Nixon, Mueller, and on and on. Those guys wanted to win, and it showed .... always. And please, because the Yankees "haven't won in a couple years," doesn't discount their work ethic, either.  C'mon you guys (and girls,) you need to stop looking at everything through your green and gold glasses.  The A's lack passion, they have for quite some time.

haha i dont have green and gold glasses
if anything they are blue and orange...you are going to say that the red sox are all business???  with nixon bashing the yankees, the facial hair escapades of everyone on the team especially three of the players you mentioned, pedro and hes lax schedule and special treatment??? i can see schilling, but he is always going to be a professional.  i said "professional" in the loosest interpretation of the word possible, only asserting that they have appearance codes and have to report to "the boss".  the red sox are ALWAYS goofing around, i mean LOOK AT damons hair!

equating "professionalism" and "wanting to win" as you said is not what i was trying to do, i was just simply pointing out that they have more of a frat house style clubhouse than the yankees -- i would say everyone in the league wants to win and they have different rules for how to go about it

maybe its not that the A's lack passion, but that they are so young they dont know what direction they are shooting or dont understand it.  i live in detroit, i know what futility looks like and it doesnt come in green and gold

All the way from the mitten... Go GVSU, GO A's!!!
