Oakland A's Minor League Depth Chart: 2B/SS

Oakland A's Minor League Depth Chart: 2B/SS
By Melissa Lockard Senior Editor
Date: Feb 17, 2005

This is the second in a series of articles examining the depth of the Oakland A's farm system at every position

The article has some nice info on our minor leaguers. It seems to me though we can use a lot more depth at 2nd base. Had we not of traded him, Mark Teahen could have been the man, but it seems we really want an All Star quality 2nd baseman, just like we already have at SS and 3rd.

Teahen
Teahen is a 3B.

We would've moved him.
2nd is an easier position anyway.

Mark Kiger?
I'm surprised there is no mention of Mark Kiger. He figures to be a utility player in the mold of Mike Rouse, and he'll probably start in AAA this year. He's definitely above Melillo (who has yet to play a full year professionally) on the depth chart.

Morrissey
Do people think it is too late for him?  Everything I've read up to now mentions his ridiculous ceiling, and he has had good stats at all levels. Will makeup keep him from the bigs?

Teahan was traded last year
Teahan was traded to K.C. last year in part of the Dotel deal.

Omar Quintania
I hit post to fast.  I think this is a guy to watch.  If he doesn;t get traded he looks like a guy who will get it done at the big league level.  If not for us then for somebody else if we trade him.

They are moving him to 2nd
If he transitions well and keeps hitting look for him to be up by 2006

Pulling for Omar
That's good news. I'm really into this guy and I hope he keeps hitting - he'll probably start at Sac this year, eh? Hitting-wise, he hasn't blown it yet...

I could even see a late `05 callup if he's doing well, especially if Ellis/Ginter/Scoot are injured or not cuttin' it.

Oh, and...
he bats left-handed, which would seem to make him easier to slot in next to any of Mark/Keith/Marco.

I'm hoping Mike Rouse makes it.
I played against him in HS (he went to Valley Christian in San Jose...I played at Santa Teresa).  You could tell he was headed for bigger things.  He is not the biggest guy in the world but you can tell he was made to play ball.  He alone beat us that game with his two HR's and 4 rbi's.  His swing was effortless.

Santa Teresa
I went to Santa Teresa too. I graduated 03. I'm surprised that there's another Saint on AN.

What has happened to...
Freddie Bynum? You don't usually see the A's miss so badly on 1st round picks. Anybody seen this guy play?

by applejack on Feb 17, 2005 11:18 AM PST reply actions

He was a second round pick
But he's pretty much a bust. He's underperformed. He's not bad. He's a speedy utility guy, who's now being used in the outfield.
Peace up, A-Town Down (A town being Albany California, not Atlanta)

Not sure bust is the right word.
He was 2nd round pick and was a high school or community college (1 year)kid I believe so it will take longer. I also think he had some blood problem, or at least some injury thing at the end of last season. He may someday be a nice sub that has speed and can play outfield and infield. The kid is only 25
