So the Dominoes Fall

Peter Gammons just said on ESPNEWS that A.J. Burnett is signing with the Toronto Blue Jays for 5 years and $55 million.  He said it would be announced in the next hour or so.

That's the domino the A's have been waiting for.  Now that Burnett's market has been set, the teams that missed out on him can start chasing after Barry Zito.

I expect things will heat up very shortly.

By the way, for those of you who were wondering why AN was down for close to 12 hours from Friday night/Saturday morning I have an interesting story to share.

Apparently, our server host bought a new building, and had to physically move all the servers over to the new place. It was supposed to take about two hours, Friday night/Saturday morning. It was going to be a small disruption which most people wouldn't notice.

But the NYPD got a bomb threat against the NYSE, and the van with our servers got trapped in the police net. A bomb-sniffing dog checked out the van and apparently some sort of cologne set the dog off. So the police locked down the van all morning until they could ensure that everything was legit.

Now you know.  No word on whether or not there was another bomb threat today that caused the servers to go down again for an hour or so.

Headline: BEANE TRADES ZITO FOR GIANT SPACE BABY
THIRD MONOLITH, Jupiter, Dec. 6 -- A's General Manager Billy Beane announced today that, following endless speculation and a variety of plot twists, he has traded ace pitcher Barry Zito for a giant, floating space baby.

The conclusion to this saga has left fans confused and annoyed.

"A giant space baby?," one dusgruntled A's fan was heard to mutter.  "Even with Loaiza filling Zito's slot in the lineup, what does that get us?  The giant space baby has no major league experience.  I seriously doubt he'll give us the right-handed pop our lineup needs.  Heck, I don't even know what a giant space baby means?  What was this whole Zito plot line about, anyway?"

Defenders of the move note the giant space baby's plate discipline as the factor that moved Beane to pull the trigger on this trade.  More sceptical analysts cite rumors that the computer on which Beane relies for his statistical analyses has been badly malfunctioning of late.

Barry Zito could not be reached for comment. He will apparently be spending eternity -- or at least the remaining year on his current contract -- in a strange but opulent bedroom, decorated in Louis XIV style furniture, but lit from the floor.

Quick thought here
What about signing Juan Encarnacion?  At first glance his stats don't jump out at you.  But he has played most of his career in pitcher's parks.  His career AL numbers (for parks still in use) are .283/.324/.459 for a 780 OPS but if you take out the nearly two seasons worth of AB's he had in Comerica Park, his line is .300/.337/.501 for a 838 OPS.

He also can play CF, enabling us to move Payton while keeping our solid OF defense.  I think I'd rather see a Encarnacion/Kotsay/Bradley OF than Payton/Kotsay/Bradley.  While it might take $6 million to add Juan, we'd still be money ahead if Zito is dealt for Billingsley, Bradley, Broxton, and Choi (especially if Ginter is included).  A younger, more athletic OF, with two RH hitters added.

Any thoughts on this?

I'm hoping they'll post it...
Urban thinks it will have to a super deal for Billy to trade Zito. Billy got taken by the Braves on the Hudson deal and will not allow that to happen again.  Talk about Zito to Mets because of Rick Peterson, Urban thinks Zito to Yankees more likely, bright lights/big city/big stage.
Someone wrote in about Barry in Redsocks...Urban says Redsox fans might like that, doesn't know about A's fans...and Redsox don't really have anybody to trade.
Billy thinks (so do we) that if Harden and Crosby are healthy we win the west last season
More possible to package Saarloos/Kennedy/Ginter maybe in a deal for Bradley..
Did Dan Johnson push Hatteberg out of 1st base..yeah, but Scott really fell off last season, and AL Managers voted Johnson for a Topps award (???)
Urban raved about Huston STreet, not only his pitching (and he thinks he could be even better next season - not as much throwing over winter. And Huston gets stronger as season progresses)but, his attitude (Urban wants to sit down with Huston's parents and ask them how they raised a kid like that)
New ownership may mean more $$ and the fact that Wolff offered BB ownership, is smart..
"All good news when it comes to Oakland" whether or not Billy moves Zito
And as Blez said earlier...Billy is the belle of the ball at winter meeting and he is loving it.

Good interview, although nothing really new if you are on AN, hope they post it and we can hear it again.

My thoughts
Gaudin: Seems like he is nothing special, I saw him get rocked in Oakland this year, but the trade seems decent considering The A's probabbly wont give up any one good for him.  Also because of his Era every year besides this past one.

In terms of the Zito situation,  Obviously, Zito for Bradley flat is not good enough, but as I said before I love Bradley and think he would be great in Oakland.

My guess is that the A's wont do a big trade until perhaps the last day or later. Just like last year. Im not sure if people remember but a lot of people including myself were despressed lack their of a better word, that the A's had not done a trade and the meetings were closing down.

Hopefully Billy pulls some magic.

Lets go Oakland!

by bballfanr33 on Dec 5, 2005 6:03 PM PST reply actions

Less than Zito
Bradley is persona non grata in L.A.  I'd have to think he could be acquired without including Zito in the deal.

I'll leave it to others to present data to the point, but I'd have to imagine Payton, Kotsay and Bradley to be one of the best defensive outfields in the game -- perhaps it wouldn't be the "A" lineup, but it's an alignment we'd see frequently.

And -- if it turned out that Swish was destined to see most of the innings at first -- is Bradley a good enough center fielder that moving Kotsay to right (which he has described as his favorite outfield position) would be considered?

Pretty much exactly the kind of deal I was hoping the A's would make. Decent right-handed hitter for two okay starters from our deep pool. Right now though it has that "too good (read: too nail-on-the-head) to be true" feel. The cut never seems to be this clean.

it is tough to embrace this guy.  Saarloos was such an overachiever too.

The nature of the A' budget requires them to take chances in order to find value.  Maybe they can keep him in line for one year.  I want them to win so badly that I may be able to tolerate this one.

Beane should be attacking Coletti, Omar, Daniels and the Red Sox consortium.  He should stay away from Shuerholtz.

Beane
doesn't have to stay away from everyone... He's the best in the business, bar none. Schuerholtz included.

But just for the record, Daniels and the Red Sox office aren't bad. They're actually above average. The jury is still out on Coletti, though I think DePo was a better GM. Omar is throwing money left and right, and who knows? it might buy him a WS just like it bought the Yankees a WS or two.

Saarloos and Mario Ramos for Bradley
says rotoworld!!

http://www.rotoworld.com/

Milton Bradley could be on his way to the A's for right-hander Kirk Saarloos and left-hander Mario Ramos.

Rumors are floating that it's a done deal. The A's official site says only that the team has offered Saarloos and another player to the Dodgers for Bradley. If the A's get Bradley, they could play Nick Swisher at first base and use Dan Johnson as a DH. Another option would be to trade Jay Payton or Mark Kotsay and continue to pursue a designated hitter.

Payton and Bradley
That would mean both Payton and Bradley could become free agents at the end of next year, which I guess only matters if both are still on the team at that point.

It'd be unfortunate if Dan Johnson got crowded out of a position entirely, which in theory could happen if the A's have Payton, Bradley, and Kotsay in the outfield, move Swisher to first, and pick up a DH (instead of Johnson DHing).

Saarloos is a cool guy and a tough competitor, but let's face it, he doesn't miss any bats.  As for Ramos, whatever...  Bradley's a good OBP guy with potentially good power, will probably help the A's score a few more runs this year.  Payton projects to have an OBP around .310 whereas Bradley could be somewhere north of .350.

Barry Zito should stay unless...
Billy gets a deal he just can't decline, ie. a power bat, a ML ready pitcher and a prospect. Zito offers more to the club than his on field performance. Besides his leadership for the young players and durability, he is also a marketable commodity. He brings a flavor to the game as a leader that is lost in Chavez, and his loss will effect the team more than once every fifth day. Now will they be able to resign him...not sure? But unless the right deal is provided, I believe that even one more year with him would pay large dividends to the rest of the club. Out of the big three, Zito is the one that always pitched his turn, and his ability to bounce back from a bad outing is something that needs to rub off on the rest of the staff. I'm of the mindset that the A's should keep Zito, and try to sign Thomas or Piazza that would provide some pop for the DH, while the A's wait for Ethier and Barton to be ready. If they could acquire Bradley in the deal that was mentioned above - then they should do that as well, for then it increases depth, and provides better matchup possibilities late in games - with Bradley, Payton, Swisher or Johnson available off the bench on any given night.
