A's trade Ethier to Dodgers for Bradley and Antonio Perez

This deal will be announced in the next hour. The A's get Milton Bradley and Antonio Perez for prospect Andre Ethier. Looks like a great deal for the A's. Billy has done it again. But it raises a few questions. One, what does this mean for Frank Thomas possibly signing? What does Bradley coming to the A's mean for Jay Payton. What does Perez mean for Marco Scutaro? Great deal if you ask me.

Perez

Is this our backup 2B/3B Ginter type (but with less power) now?

So much for Bynum or Watson for the bench.

Wait? Wasn't this guy a Mariner? DAMNIT, that guy sucks...

I love the deal
I think Barton is the superior talent in the long run

Bradley is a very good player right now.

We're up to 102 wins.. and counting !!

damn, losing ethier hurts...
but i still think it's worth it.

if zito is staying, if the a's are signing thomas, getting bradley is worth it.  beane is trying to win in 2006 while doing minimal damage to the a's chances through 2010.

i just wish we also got choi, since i can't see how that would take much at all since the dodgers hate him.

a choi/kielty combo would be great for backup OF/1B and at DH in case frank thomas gets injured.

Ethier
I was kind of thinking: We have a lot of Outfield prospects, where do we put them all?

Barton will be LF/1B/DH in 2007, but who will be the other LF/1B/DH?

hmm ...
This is interesting ...

As it stands right now, Swish moves to 1b, DJ to DH and Payton and Bradley in RF/LF, both backing up CF more than capably with Kielty backing up the corners.

If we signed Thomas, though, Payton is headed to the bench. Does BB project Thomas playing few enough games to get Payton the PT that would keep him happy or is Payton on the way out?

by devo on Dec 13, 2005 2:09 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Look at it this way
  1. kotsay has back issues-- 20 games right there;
  2. Swisher can't hit lefties-- possibly 25-30 games right there;
  3. bradley will blow up at some point and get a couple of weeks off-- another 15 games or so;
  4. Thomas will play 100--
payton's practically a full-time jack of all trades contributor.

Ronald McDonald's the guy on his way out..

but what a bench we're developing all of a sudden.

good points, but ...
... I disagree with the conclusion. Kielty, like Ginter, has about zero trade value right now. Plus, he's still cheap.

Payton's got perceived value and is expensive. My guess (and that's all it is -- yours is as good as mine) is that this means bye-bye Jay-Pay.

Kielty
might not be that cheap. This was his first arb-eligible year, and even coming off a horrible 2004 he got a raise to around $900K. This year, I'd expect him to get somewhere around what Byrnes made last year ($2+ million).

Payton is super cheap in this market
Every team thinking of signing Johnny Damon for Boras money will be sure to take note.  $4.5M is pretty cheap for a reliable CF.

what about the DH though
Wouldnt DJ be the odd man out.  Thomas at DH, Bradley, Kotsay, Payton in the OF.  Swish at 1B.

Maybe Thomas is signing elsewhere.

If Hurt is signed
Swish moves back to RF, DJ stays at 1st, Payton is the odd man out, essentially backing up everybody. There's plenty of PT to be had, it just may not be consistent enough to keep him happy.

Yes
I think thats more logical than sitting DJ.  I agree about Payton.  He wont be pleased.

by pickinmachine on Dec 13, 2005 2:20 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

there is no way
BB wouldnt have a talented rookie like DJ sit. I'd think that Payton would get a few more games in CF to rest Kotsay. I'd imagine DJ would play 120 games at 1B and 40 at DH. Thomas would play 80-100 games at DH, and Swisher would play 100 in RF, and 40 at 1B. That means Payton would get at least 80-100 games in the outfield, which might be enough to keep him happy. He did just sign an extension, so I don't think he'd be relegated to a bench role completely. I don't see him being traded, though, either.

Makes him very tradeable
No long-term commitment for a 31 year old (pure guess) OF, and $4.5M is cheap for a starting CF.

See the "DJ to be traded diary"

i see the breakout of the 810 starts in the OF, 1B and DH as follows:

DJ-- 150
Kotsay-- 140
Swish-- 140
Jay Pay-- 130
Bradley-- 120 (he's never played more than 141 games, and only 100+ one other time)
Hurt-- 100

kielty-- 30

The problem is
Too much of his PT is based on Kotsay/Hurt's health. While likely true, those won't be that big of factors in April and discontent could get brewing before his PT increases as they need rest - making him less productive and hurting his PT going forward ...

Unless Thomas is only going to play on Mon, Weds, Fri, Saturday all season, I worry about Payton's acceptance.

Ethier is not a great prospect..
I've said this before, but he failed to slug .500 or post a .400 obp in a year in which he hit .319, meaning his offense at this point is mostly dependant on batting average.  The power he showed was only mediocre for the Texas League, and before this years stellar AFL, he didn't even show much plate discipline (48 BB/93 K's in Double A).  He's nearing 24, is not athletic enough to play center, and It doesn't seem like he'll develop enough power to be a good corner outfielder.  I like him, but he's probably never going to be anything more than a slightly above average corner outfielder.  Needless to say I like this deal, though I would've preffered an arm over Perez, given we have nowhere to play him.

by Little Rickey on Dec 13, 2005 2:10 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

for the record
Ethier had a .385 OBP and .497 SLG.  To say "he failed to slug .500," while factually correct, is kind of misleading.  And .385 OBP isn't so bad either.  just putting it in context.

In my opinion, this trade is awesome, cuz we get Bradley (and Perez) for an unproven MLB-player, and previously, we were talking about giving up 2 MLB players (Saarloos and Kennedy) for Bradley, or there were even rumblings about a Zito for Bradley trade (though I know none of us put much stock in it).  So to get Bradley+ for Ethier, while sad to lose a top prospect, is a great deal for us.

NOOOOO!
Goddamnit, Billy. I thought you had another week before you started to wreck Christmas!

The Ethier/Barton combination seemed so wonderful and enticing and hopeful. :-( This is one thing I loved about the Billy Beane Era, we traded away good prospects but we kept guys who seemed like gems.

I really thought Ethier was destined for this organization and with all the excitement here about him... it really seemed like he was going to be one of our own, a guy we'd be rooting for long after now. Our higher level ain't exactly uberstocked now that we've brought up so many guys, it was nice to have Ethier, our future ROY, to look forward to.

I guess what really bothers me is that we traded a great prospect for a guy that I cannot, in good conscience, root for.

I mean, Milton Bradley? Goddamn. I was so happy that, with a Rinconless team, I could finally have a year where I didn't hate anyone on the team.

Milton Bradley is a jackass, and given Jose Guillen and his tendencies towards drama, I was hoping that Billy would be smarter than a signing like this. We can do better than Milton Freakin' Bradley.

I'm with you on this
This is one of the saddest A's days I can remember.  Milton Bradley is a big jerk.  Now I have to find a way to root for the A's and hope one of the players goes 0-4 every night.  I will never root for Bradley.

by homerozzieandthestraw on Dec 13, 2005 2:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

A little surprising
Seems like a decent trade. Bradley is phenomenally talented, but has never quite put it all together, partly because of his behavioral problems, and partly just because of injuries. I thought that the rumored trades for one of our extra starters (Saarloos or Kennedy) made more sense given our glut there and LA's needs, but with Ethier it could be that Beane feels that he's at his peak trade value, and is selling high. Ethier is a better prospect than Teahen, but is probably not the future star that some have been hoping for.

Perez has talent
The A's are my favorite team, but the Dodgers are my second so i watched them alot last year. Perez is a really good player...the problem is he is naturally a shortstop. They tried to put him at third last year but he couldn't handle it defensively, and he was never comfortable at second. I think that with Wash he will improve quickly defensivly. And hitting wise he is a pretty good hitter he was the dodgers best hitter for a while(mainly when he first came up, and i am kinda biased cause i saw him jack one against the giants) I am really excited about getting him....the only problem is he has nowhere to play, but he is a young and a great pickup

Another player you should be happy to have. Unfairly charged with having "bad defense" should provide about a .750 OPS from a guy who can play 2nd, short, and third. Look for about .275/.350/.415 numbers from him,

Great trade
Ethier profiled as a 4th OF, Bradley is a very good player who can play a corner OF and fill in capably in CF when Kotsay's back acts up.  He's a very good hitter who can help us for a couple of years.  Good trade.

Payton may be the odd man out, unless somebody wants to give up a lot for Kotsay.

I think this was a steal for the A's.  Looks like BB took advantage of a new GM who wanted to get rid of everything the man he replaced set up.

Do not worry about chemistry.  BB would not have done this without talking long and hard with Paul DePo.

Bradley is OK
I agree that the trading is not over.  Bradley made a big impact on the Dodgers the year before last.  I have to think having Kent around had a lot to do with Bradley's troubles.

This Perez can also help.  A great pickup of talent at a time Ethier's stock was at its highest.

Who else was after Bradley?  Perhaps this is just the beginning of a delayed three way deal.

The baseball world would have looked at Beane and Depo funny if they made the trade. But with McCourte handing the reigns to Colletti, Beane sliced and diced his way into another steal. Beane has too much respect for Depo and his buddy in Toronto to commit this type of larceny.

we should have a pool
where we guess which Athletic Bradley has his first public dispute with.  Or which Athletic Bradley will label as "racist."

We should also try to make sure that there's a big "Milton Bradley Fan Club" sign right in the corner of the stadium that corresponds to the place in Dodger Stadium where he had his tirade.

by rubin sierra on Dec 13, 2005 5:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You should hit him
how could it not be a good deal to trade an unproven kid, with a lot of talent, for two proven ball players.  each of these guys hit just in right neer 300 last year, and as we all know, in oakland it only takes two guys hitting 300 to cover the spread against our amazing pitching.

there is no way to know weather Ethier would be sucsesful in the majors.  the ods say no.  i hadden to believe that he would have beenbut most dont.  now we have a deep bench for the next two years, power, defence, and pitching.

even if Ethier ends up being great some day this is still a good trade for the moment.  they are going for it this year and these guys are going to help them get it done.

More on Perez
He did slug .511 in Las vegas in 04, but it was the PCL after all.  Looks like he can play short as well, and he's got some speed.  So he can spell Ellis, provide Crosby insurance and not embarass himself.  Really nice pickup.  If anyone knows anything about his defense i'd love to know...

Defense
Again, Jim Tracy refused to play him because of bad defense, but most defensive metrics put him at about average, and he had the highest range factor at third base in baseball (by far).

Defense
I watched the Dodgers last year and he was groomed to be a shortstop. They tried to put him at third last year so he could play more but he couldn't handle it defensively, and he was never comfortable at second when they put hime there and Kent at first(those were some hilarious time with kent at first). I think that with Wash he will undoubtedly improve defensivly. He is young and a great talent.

if this is all for 2006
than no one will be traded.

you keep saarloos as #6 starter because he will keep you in every game unlike glynn/etherton.

you keep kennedy because he can be the yabu (blowouts), the loogy, and the saarloos replacement if saarloos ends up in the rotation b/c of injury.

you keep payton because enough games will be missed between kotsay, bradley, and frank thomas that you still need him.

you keep keilty because he's cheap and has no trade value whereas he has some worth.

and finally the a's have depth.  there will be injuries, there always are.
that's the lesson from last year, if the a's had one more major league caliber starting pitcher and hitter last year, they would have made the playoffs.

MLB.com
MLB.com press release
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers resolved the Milton Bradley situation on Tuesday, trading the outfielder and infielder Antonio Perez to the Oakland A's for top outfield prospect Andre Ethier, according to a Los Angeles source.

Bradley is recovering from knee surgery and he goes to Oakland hoping to turn the page after a turbulent two seasons in Los Angeles. Perez, a utility infielder with a live bat, was recently sidelined in the Dominican Winter League when he was hit in the face with a page and suffered a small fracture of his left cheekbone.

Bradley posted modest numbers in an injury-marred 2005, with a .290 average, a .350 on-base percentage, 13 homers and 38 RBIs. Perez batted a career-high .297 with 11 steals and 13 doubles.

Ethier, the A's top outfield prospect, was named the Texas League Player of the Year last season, and had a strong Arizona Fall League, hitting .366 with 21 RBIs and a .495 on-base percentage over 23 games.

The trade is the first for new Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, who appears intent on reshaping the Los Angeles outfield and the roster as a whole.

my point is that
Swisher is moved to 1b only if Thomas isn't signed. Therefore, Rosenthal is moving the guys around the diamond under that scenario.

I guess there's been so much talk of the Big Hurt signing with Oakland, that I'm still thinking he's going to be here.

several possibilities
among them, Payton as 4th outfielder (will get plenty of playing time to rest Kotsay's back, also in case Bradley has any other injury or other issues) Swisher part-time OF and part-time 1B (DJ 1B/DH, even with a Thomas signing since Thomas is also an injury and perhaps aging risk).

And of course, there may be more trades...

He looks like either a great 4th of or an average at best starting left fielder.  He just doesn't have the pop to make an impact as a corner outfielder.  I've been excited about him, but when you can get a proven on base buy who shows flashes of good power (last year when healthy his isolated slugging was around .200, playing in dodger stadium no less) for a guy with ethier's profile you gotta jump on it.

Another trade in the works
What does this mean for Kielty/Payton/Scutaro/Ginter with Bradley and Perez coming over? ,

somebody has to go. If we sign Thomas maybe two of them have to go. Payton has  the most value and is the most expensive plus possibly we could spin perez as part of a bigger deal.

there has to be another one
i've been trying to figure out how the roster would work after this, and there just has to be something else coming. it looks like it will be out of the blue, since there are no other trade rumors being bandied about. i'm guessing ginter/scutaro/kielty/payton are all candidates for leaving now.

or another seanz bench like player who is real good at pinch hits, but I agree someone has gotta be on his way out of Oakland, so much talent not enough roster space

I keep seeing Ginter's name mentioned ...
I think the psychology behind that goes:  Our roster is much better now, could get even better if we get Thomas, we've got all these guys who could play a useful role, Kielty, Payton, Scutaro, Ginter ... Ginter!?  Crap, he can't play a useful role!  He was horrible last year, and he has a contract to receive like a million dollars to be horrible some more this year!  And he's taking up space in our roster ... Did somebody say, "trade package?"

Payton is now either benched, or gone..
Thank god we didn't have to endure 500 at bats from him.  Bradley is a sure upgrade.  That said, I love Payton as a fourth outfielder/lefty basher.  He really is the perfect right handed bench player.  If we can get good value for him, I'd still trade him.

could it be ...
... with Bradley in the fold, we'll have a maximally flexible/redundant OF (especially if Payton isn't traded).

With Perez, we'll have a substantially more flexible/redundant IF (especially if Ellis or Scutaro aren't traded).

Could Billy have finally realized the importance of having roster flexibility/redundancy for his position players?

He hasn't been given much of a chance...
Watson has minor league numbers that say he'd be a solid 4th outfielder.  He has all of 40 at bats or so with the a's.  He deserves a chance, I'm hoping he lands on a big league bench next year and gets an extended shot to show what he can do.  Having said that, Payton or Kielty are both better options.

by Little Rickey on Dec 13, 2005 3:13 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

But,
if your options for a 4th OF are Payton or Watson, there is no real decision to make.  Watson stays in AAA.

Doubting Thomas
I bet that the A's don't sign Thomas now.  His stock is rising and he's too big a risk.  I like Bradley a lot better, because of the combined age/durability factory.

Great move Billy.  Amazing, he gives up unproven AA talent for two PROVEN major leaguers, one of whom has star potential!

Move Bradley
To the Pirates for Mike Gonzales. Just an idea.

Payton and Bradley don't fit on the same roster in my opinion. Even though the OF Defense would be amazing, and the IF too w/ Swish at first.

Keep Bradley AND Payton
Think about it you basically have a rotation of 5 players for 4 spots: Payton, Bradley, Johnson, Kotsay, Swisher.  One of them sits about every four days.  No big deal.

Obviously BK broiler is the odd man out, but he has had a grand total of what, one good month in the G & G?

Said Kielty has no trade value (correct), but I was more talking about PAYTON being traded to a team needing a CF, rather then Kielty as a CF.

Frank Thomas
I would not automatically assume Frank Thomas is going to be signed. We haven't heard much in a while, and last we heard, multiple baseball execs were impressed by Thomas' shape and attitude. I'm still optimistic that we'll sign him, but right now we can't go filling lineup cards and assigning positions thinking Thomas is in the bag.

If in fact we do end up signing Thomas, we can trade Payton to the Yanks who are still looking for a CF. As of now, DJ is our DH, and we have arguably the best defense in baseball.

I still remember..
Back when Stewart was pitching against the Cleveland Indians in the late 80's, he beaned their catcher.

Although the catcher charged the mound, Stewart picked him up and threw him against the ground and just started pummeling him!

For a pitcher, Stewart was immensely intimidating with his death stare and his ability to pitch inside, then utilize his fork ball to get people out, not to mention his physical presence and attitude!

ST
I was at that game.  The catcher was Andy Allanson, who was not a small dude (6'5", 225).  And, if I remember correctly, I think Stew broke out some of his karate moves on Allanson.  Andy didn't stand a chance -- Stew didn't just have the most intimidating stare out there, he could back it up too (Lee Smith in starter's clothes).

Thanks for reviving the old baseball brawl memories.  I frequently re-hash that game with my friends...

Don't Worry About Milton's Temper
First of all, Oakland is the HOME of second chances.  The much hated Al Davis brings convicts, criminals, has-beens, crackheads and everyone else into Raider land and they somehow get along.  It's been a similar story with the A's throughout the years...  maybe it's the weather, but people get along in Oakland.

Second of all, all of these so-called Bradley blowups are blown WAAAAAAY out of proportion.  Milton's "history" of domestic abuse is tied to allegations and charges, he's never been convicted of anything.  His dugout "brawl" with Jeff Kent was... oh wait, did you say Jeff Kent?  That explains everything -- Jeff Kent is a fucking asshole.  And as for crawling into the stands... let's just say I fully support any player's right to come into the stands if some dickhead fan is hurling racial epithets or batteries at them.  Fans need to learn how to behave if they expect players to learn how to behave.

Lastly, our clubhouse is about as cohesive as it gets.  Milton will fit right in... don't you worry.  Let's get excited about the fact that we just robbed LA blind in this deal.  We add a #2-6 switch-hitter with good defense for an unproven prospect with one good year in AA and an outstanding AZ Fall League season.  Adam Piatt anyone?  Shane Spencer anyone?  Flash-in-the-pan you very much?  I may be wrong, but I'll take the guy with the longer track record...

by Uncle Charlie on Dec 13, 2005 8:01 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Exaggerations
I would say even you are exaggerating Bradley's incidents. For instance there were no charges of domestic abuse pressed, and his incident with Kent was definitely not a brawl, not even a heated argument. All he did was go to the press and state that Kent was was making him uncomfortable. He was very calm when he stated it.

I don't expect Bradley to be a problem. Now, we do have problems if Payton is sitting on the bench.

Has anybody heard about Perez's character?
I was reading an article that mentioned that Perez might have an attitude problem. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

"Perez, 25, also flashed potential but his attitude was consistently in question. He was less than popular in the clubhouse and it hardly appears coincidence he already has been traded four times in his young career."
