Moneybutt overflow/wrapup

Since Apricot said Monday would be the last day, I figured I could host kind of a wrap-up because both Moneybutt diaries are getting kinda hefty.

So...

Cirquegirl's diary

Apricot's orignal diary

Feel free to rave/whine/wince about hardest choices, easiest choices... etc.

BTW 'Cotty, what time tonight will Moneybutt be cut off?

The one where you can't tell fingers from grubs. That one.

Even though... jellied rams testicles are disgusting.

And I suppose we're killing Apricot's (personal, or buisness) site's bandwidth.

I wish it could be up through Thanksgiving.
But then, I guess, you'd have to shut down submissions or something.

But my gross-out pictures seem to have been SPOT ON. Grubs, maggots, Bay Boy, rams' testicles, those are all my children. I feel like a proud papa, having unleashed them to punish those Huston Street-stalking, Monica Bellucci-bashing barbarians.

Most disturbing
Well, as a guy who's looking forward to trying rams' testicles, rotten shark meat, and burned sheep head on his trip to Iceland this month, I can't say there is much that disturbs me in this world. But there are plenty of things that irritate me. For instance:
  • Felicity Huffmann
  • Bill Plaschke
  • Marcia Cross
  • Adam Sandler
  • Dave Matthews
  • Red Sox/Yankees/Angels
  • Penelope Cruz
  • Emily Watson
  • Ohad's dog Toby
Though at one point I started voting for Plaschke repeatedly since he was threatening my (rams') testicles' lock on last place.

  1. Thanks for everyone who came and to those who brought dishes. Mmm grubs hot dish.
  2. I think my server is actually melted. You killed my server!  YOU BASTARDS! I'm expecting some kind of pissed off e-mail from the administrator. But I really don't think it's my fault.
  3. Bandwidth-wise, we were pretty spartan considering there were 80,000 votes in 4 days. That was about 5 GB total for hinderlord and hinderpotluck. At that rate, I can host two or three a month without going over.
  4. Ahhh, server came back to life. It just died for about ten minutes for no apparent reason.
  5. Painful Decisions. Moo ha ha ha.

by Nimvee on Nov 14, 2005 7:58 PM PST up reply actions

various responses
  1. OakT and others, keep the female hotties rolling in.
  2. The free-flowing ranting in moneybutt threads is very helpful for me for figuring out which aspects should be enhanced in future (or even current) versions. Thanks all.
  3. I like the creativity that free-for-all allowed. People did things with it that I NEVER would have thought of. I was really impressed with the number of pictures people added for existing entities.
  4. I have various design questions.
  • Should it always be free-for-all, or should there be theme-days at Moneybutt Central? If so, what themes?
  • Should there be limits on the number of entities? Maybe the older ones could roll off, or maybe there could be a limited number of votes per entry?
  • Other design changes to make a priority?
  1. Painful. Choices. Moo. Ha. Ha.
  2. I could probably survive bandwidth-wise leaving it up for a few more days but... well, as Margaret Cho's mom once said, "You must have ass in moderation. Otherwise it's not special."  I think I'll wrap it at midnight PST. I have some cool (to me) ideas for the next Moneybutt. I'll probably roll it out on a Friday morning sometime (though two Fridays hence is Thanksgiving... I can't tell whether that's a very bad or a very good time to roll it out)... I like that rhythm of Friday work people procrastinating, the weekend rolls in, and then take the edge off Monday.
  3. Thanks again for everyone's contributions. This one was way more fun for me than any previous ones.

by Apricot on Nov 14, 2005 8:14 PM PST reply actions

Design...
I think you should occasionally have a theme. There should also be a limit on entities - too many makes it go kind of crazy. I love the painful choices, btw. :D

Moneybutt has been awesome! My only regret is that I have to go to school all day and cannot keep up with the vote leaders. :D

Themes...
  • Favorite hottie (male/female)
  • Most hated baseball player/athlete <cough>TERRELLOWENSCURTSCHILLING</cough>
  • STRICTLY non-A's (A's always tend to win MB)
  • Inanimate objects

by JLaff on Nov 14, 2005 8:26 PM PST up reply actions

Changes
Themes are cool.

Enforce a strict rule that no entities from previous competitions can return. Huston Street deserves to have his jersey hung on the wall and barred from entering future Moneybutts.

I'd suggest tweaking the painful choices algorithm. It was too easy to vote for some of my long-standing favorites over newcomers who were up at the top of my list simply because of small sample size. Maybe make it so that an entity needs a specific number of total votes to become eligible for the painful choices.

Also, perhaps you should limit the number of entity submissions per person. Perhaps even tie the number of entity submissions to votes. Like say to begin voting you need to submit 5 entities, no more no less, but every 500 votes cracked you get to submit an additional entity. That way we have something to look forward to as we murder our wrists.

by OaktownTribesman on Nov 14, 2005 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

Themes would be awesome
I disagree with the idea that previous entities be phased out. I think so many things got covered in this last one that it would be unfortunate to loose them. I do think that Huston has had too much praise. I think he is starting to get a big head. Wait, it's Huston, he is too modest for that. I think he can stick around for future Player Moneybutts, but after a few more of him winning, maybe retiring him would be appropriate. But not for a while.

I think that themes will eliminate the issue of over using the great ones.

Another thing that would be important is limiting the number of different entities. When you have 2000 different ones, you could sit here all day and never see one. I seriously think I was up to about 800 votes before I finally saw Swisher. I think Themes will help with this also.

I do have to say, I think this is awesome! It is totally helping the off-season pass with a little less pain than normal! Thanks Apricot!!

by BobbyCrosbysGirl on Nov 14, 2005 9:02 PM PST up reply actions

Another suggestion
Maybe you should do a "Moneybutt: Tag Team Edition" where two entities are united and pitted against two others. That way you'd be faced with some truly interesting matchups:

Rams' testicles & Huston Street vs. Rich Harden & Bill Plaschke

Maggots & Grubs vs. Kobe Bryant & Red Sox

And then this formula could be adapted to a "Moneybutt: Hot Stove Edition" where you would vote whether you would trade one package of entities for another or not.

by OaktownTribesman on Nov 14, 2005 9:14 PM PST up reply actions

ooooh
Tag Team. I like.  Maybe not every time, but maybe every N votes, sort of like Painful Choices. Maybe every 50 votes.

And best of all... pretty easy to program.  <writes in his book>

by Apricot on Nov 14, 2005 9:36 PM PST up reply actions

feedback
  1. LOVE the Painful Choice.
  2. I really enjoyed this round. I think it was because everyone contributed different ideas.
  3. NO A'S PLAYERS! I'm sick of them. <throws turducken>
  4. I don't think there should be a limit on the number of entries. I think there should be a cutoff to when pictures can be submitted, though. I still haven't voted on every entity.
  5. <thumbs up> on the "Tag Team" edition idea
  6. I like how the refresh button doesn't work
  7. I enjoy the "Your Effect" thing. It brightens my day knowing just how much my voting has caused people like Zito, Depp, Orlando Bloom, Hermione, and Draco Malfoy to lose on his or her score. <evil laugh>

by Jennifer on Nov 15, 2005 7:18 AM PST up reply actions

also
still not sure how to deal with the too-many-entities issue. I thought about giving entities different categories and letting voters restrict to categories. I also thought about restricting the number of submissions per person, but I don't want to dampen the creativity.

Maybe Entities with, say, 1000 votes and over 85% votes or under 15% end up out of the pool in the Hall of Fame / Hall of Shame...

Anyway, I welcome all input. It's really helpful.

I also have a vague idea for a far future situation where other people could host a Moneybutt besides me. The Admin Tools are almost there.
