Nightmare on 66th Avenue

Ken Macha is Glenn Close waiting to jump out of the bathtub.  You thought the concept of Macha as the A's manager was dead.  You'd already moved on.

And then like JR being shot on Dallas, it was all a dream.

I was never a huge Macha hater like many around here, but I'd also gotten in the mindset of accepting a change.  I'd even started to look forward to seeing another person making the decisions.  Perhaps Ron Washington was finally going to get his chance.  Maybe lifelong friend Bob Geren was going to get a shot.  Maybe even A's killer Orel Hershiser was about to join.

But Macha?  I'd put that memory to rest like moving on from an ex-wife.  Guess what?  The ex-wife is back and we're married to her for another three years.

They were discussing it on KNBR and many think that it was Billy Beane who relented and realized he made a mistake letting Macha go.  I personally think that Macha suddenly realized that his only option was the A's or unemployment.  So, I imagine the conversation went something like this:

Macha:  "Hi Betty, is Billy in?"

Betty:  "Who is this?"

Macha:  "It's Ken.  Ken Macha."

Betty:  "Geren, stop playing around."

Macha:  "No, really, it's Ken.  Can I just talk to him please?"

Betty:  "OK, please hold."

Hold music plays New Edition's Home Again.
Billy picks up.

Beane:  "Is this really Macha?"
Macha:  "Yeah, Billy it's me."

Beane:  "Ken, I've got interviews with DeFrancesco and Hershiser coming up.  I don't really have time to chat."

Macha:  "Billy, you remember the time when I brought Rincon in to face Todd Walker in the Boston series the second time and he hit another home run?"

Beane:  "Ken, the whole world remembers that."

Macha:  "Well, I think I made a big mistake again.  I really never wanted to leave Oakland, except that Pittsburgh job was so appealing.  I interviewed and they realized they wanted Jim Tracy instead."

Beane:  "Hoofah, how bad is it when Pittsburgh doesn't want you?  What's your point, Ken?"

Macha:  "I want a chance to finish what I started and I'll accept your original offer."

Beane:  "Ken, this is going to look bad for everyone involved.  We publicly claimed it was over.  We're going to start to look like Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee."

Macha:  "I'm OK with that.  I just want my job back."

Beane:  "All right, I guess.  Man, Washington and Geren are going to be pissed."

Macha:  "Don't worry, my calm demeanor will help rub off on them."

Beane:  "That's what I'm afraid of."

Yes, folks, Mild-Mannered Macha and his gum chewing are officially back.  We had all moved on to new possibilities.  New opportunities.

But the dream is over and we've got Macha back. Dream on.

I, personally, find it hard to believe ...
... that Macha was solely responsible for the iron-clad set lineup and the under-utilization of the extras and the lack of days off for regular players. I think the spectrum of decisions resulting in all those were at least partially Beane's.

Why does it all of a sudden feel
like Major League? You know, the ownership comming up with a devious plot to dwindle attendance even more by signing rejects (IE: Macha) so the team sucks and gives them an excuse to move?

Macha is that excuse?

... and it was at that point that I realized that by thinking outside the box, I had simply walked inside a cube...

would have nowhere near the impact on the team that losing Billy would have had, imho. I'm really not all that confused. I think Ken just wised up. Who wouldn't want to spend all summer hanging out with the boys? I'd do it for a minimum wage.

I'm happy...
I think there is always the feeling like well we could have had X, and he would have been better than Ken.  How do we know that especially with no track record.  I like Ken, sometimes he drives me nuts, like pinch hitting for Dye in the ALDS, but in the end I know what we have and I'm happy I don't have to see him in a different uniform next season. Besides, the players like him and bringing in someone like Orel to me would have been like having the guy that stole your wife move in to the basement of your house.  He might be your friend now, but you never forget what he did.

Diplomacy = 0 in Beane's book
It will be really interesting to see what the money was- wonder who blinked- probably not Beane.

I guess Billy really doesn't care what it looks like to reverse yourself:

  1. Takes the Boston GM job then returns
  2. Gives the Mets a short window at Howe, then gives them another one when the first one fails.
  3. Rehires Macha after first effectively firing him.

It was Bobby's death that was a dream....
...and we didn't find that out until the end of the following season.  At least we won't go through a whole year of Ron Washington only to have him rip off his mask during the presentation of the World Series trophy.

...or maybe it'll be Bud Selig that takes off HIS mask.  We'll find out he's really Suzanne Pleshette(if you remember the last "Newhart" episode....another dream sequence)

Bobby dies,
they do a whole season without him, then in the final episode of the season, Victoria Principal wakes up, goes to the bathroom, and sees Bobby spring from the bathtub wielding a butcher knife ... no, actually, that was "Fatal Attraction,"... she sees Bobby in the shower, turns out he was never dead, and the whole season was a dream. Lame-o-rama.

The main thing that bothers me about Macha
is his seeming indifference on the bench and his stubborn refusal to change up the batting order after a month of struggles.

I usually think he handles the pitching staff fairly well and the bullpen.  Remember, he coaxed 88 wins out of a team that had been ravaged by injuries and inconsistent offense.

Cognitive dissonance
Those who think that Billy Beane can do no wrong and Ken Macha can do no right will finally have to get over it and accept that Beane's public support of Macha's management was more than just hot air. The fact is that Beane believes that Macha, though not perfect and not worth a huge contract, has strengths as a manager that outweigh his weaknesses, and is as good a choice as anyone available to manage this team. And I think he's right.
The revolution starts now.

I'll say it again
Something just doesn't seem right here. I'll bet this new "Macha" is just a clone who was hatched in an incubator in a lab deep down in the dark dungeons of the Coliseum by Beane's whiz kid assistants. They also probably brainwashed this clone into unconditionally adhering to Beane's teachings. I wouldn't be surprised if they equipped him with a remote-controlled mind control device as well. I'll bet the real Macha is locked up in a tiny little cell up on Mt. Davis, where he is to remain in chains for eternity.

Well, now at least everyone knows one thing
for sure (if they didn't already): This is Billy's freaking team. He can do what he wants, when he wants, with whoever the hell he wants. I doubt that Billy went begging Macha to come back. Macha probably had to apologize and ASK to be taken back. Now, he KNOWS this is not his team. This is Billy's team.

If there was ANY confusion in anyone's mind - players, coaches, media, fans - we all know that the front office is firmly in charge, and hell, I can live with that.

Real quick
I'm on my way out of town but I wanted to say this real quick. Sorry if I'm reiterating what others have said, but I've not had time to read all the comments.

This move is so much worse than just giving Macha an extension right off the bat  (which I wouldn't have minded). The manager is supposed to be respected, and in this situation it appears that kenny is crawling back with his tail between his legs. I think that might hurt his reputation among the players. They should have taken the deal off the table once negotiations with other potential managers began.

Diplomatic middle-ground?
The fans love Ron Washington and the guy deserves a promotion (even though that would take him away from being the best IF coach in the game).  If BB passed over him to replace Macha, not only would the fans be pissed, but it could be a slap in the face to Wash.  An easy way to avoid this - and possibly keep Wash for next year - rehire the old guy.

The promotion of Geren would almost be seen as nepotism because of his close relationship to BB.  No one would be viewed as more of a pawn than Geren.  An easy way to avoid this and not completely piss off your friend - rehire the old guy.

Macha tested the waters and when no one bit, he came back home.  BB saw that he could rehire a productive manager for what he was offering and possibly keep the peace amongst his staff and clubhouse.  Seems like an odd situation, but the decision is not completely stupid.

Question: will Lacheman return as bench coach? If not, will Geren or Washington be offered the job?

How's this for a theory:
Billy hired who he thought was the best guy for the job.

Is it possible that Billy has more information to make a decision than we do? Not to mention baseball smarts?

Yes, that is the real question!!
My guess is that both will be offered the Bench Coach postion: first Wash, then, if (or rather when) he refuses, on to Geren, who will probably get the job.

I am equally amazed as all others at AN by this sudden turn of events, and even though I was one of Macha's largest distractors, I was also in the minority on AN who voted to accept Ken's return.  Just shows how my head is still spinning, trying to see the situation and future with some sort of clarity...but so far little clarity.

What I think may have been behind Billy's thinking is how close (as in really CLOSE) Billy thinks the A's will be in 2006 to making a run at the Whole Enchilada.

And that Billy is trying to insure some sort of stablility with the team....stability in spring training and during April and May, especially.....but I, like all others here, would love to know what really took place before and during the conversation.  Somehow the Geren and Wash interviews also had to play some part in Billy's thinking.

Well in the yahoo article Swisher proclaimed his happiness over Macha returning.  I think he has the players' respect.  If Rincon is jettisoned then Macha won't even be able to put him in games to blow it so that alone should make things better.

Why shouldn't Swisher be happy?
He hit .190 for a month and was in the lineup every day. Of course he is happy.  A good manager would have sat him down on the bench.
Ask Melhuse if he is happy, or Ginter, or Yabu, or Bynum, Watson and the other guys who sat for 6 months.  It was revealing last night when watching the Cardinals how they talked about how the bench players had helped the team win so many games, but in Oakland that is just a fantasy.

I've been critical
of plenty of Macha's decisions but I've always concluded that, since I respect Billy so much, I have to respect his choice of manager. I've never understood why the Macha bashers wear t-shirts that say, "In Billy We Trust," yet don't trust his choice of manager. Does it make sense to praise what Billy has done for this franchise while at the same time having so much contempt for the man that Billy picked as manager in 2003, retained in 2004 AND 2005, and re-signed in 2006? When we see Macha make a blockheaded bullpen or lineup move, do we have enough information to form a proper opinion of Macha's abilities? Doesn't Billy see a lot more than we do?

I can see why this did happen, why Billy did resign Macha. Losing Macha,Hudgenson, and Wash all in the same offseason would affect the overall chemistry of the team in some way no doubt, and depending who filled those vacant positions, it might have really thrown the team into a tail spin, Who Knows? Strange Case of Billy and Ken
  1. Let's not forget that Beane moved Howe to New York to ensure that he wouldn't lose Macha after the 2002 season;
  2. Please read the Nightengale column in USA Sports Weekly yesterday where Macha basically goes negative on Beane, saying that this past offseason (after resisting for nearly a year and a half) he finally read Moneyball, after friends imploring him not to. Macha "seethed" about Beane's disposable philosophy toward managers. It went on to say that he had a tough year, having to get lineup approaval from Beane and assorted other indiginities;
  3. Macha's options were few and far between;
  4. Like I predicted, beane was underwhelmed with the Geren-Wash options;
  5. Don't you think Curt Young might have offered an opinion regarding either Hershiser or Bud Black, the two most prominent names to emerge in the past several days? "After all i did this year, you'd bring in another pitching coach to be my boss?"
  6. Both sides got off of their high horses and realized that, for the money, each couldn't do any better.
And that my friends is that.

About Wash...
This is for everyone who has said this same basic thing about Wash, not just you Oaktoon.

I don't think it is fair to say that Billy was "underwhelmed" by Wash and Geren. We don't know what he thinks of them. We don't know how the interviews went. For all we know, this may have been the plan all along.

Billy may have just called Macha's bluff right back. When Macha tried to call him out and say $4Mil, Billy just said, ok, we will see about that... and then he just sat back and waited for Macha to come crawling back. Who knows!

So to say that Wash was not cut out for the job as Manager is not giving Wash his much deserved respect. The reality is, we DON'T know what was going on in Billy's head. This whole thing may not have a single thing to do with his reaction to Wash or Geren. So I really think that we should stop playing that card.

(Ok, not totally, I will be totally at peace when Rincon and Dotel are shipped off to Timbucktoo!) I really think this is going to be ok. Billy wouldn't have hired him back if he didn't think there was still something good there. The players are happy, Billy is happy, so we should try and be happy too. So lets just all take a few deep breaths and try to focus on the wonderful things to come in 2006.

I'm no big fan of Macha ...
but I do believe the manager is not so important most of the time.  I hope Billy stuck to his guns and Macha came back asking for Beane to honor the initial offer.  What that would suggest to me is that Beane really does negotiate in good faith, something that I have long questioned about him.   I always thought his offer to Giambi was an offer that was made to be rejected, but if this is an indication of the way Beane works, maybe I had him pegged incorrectly.  Maybe he is just a tough negotiator, which is a good thing, and his offers are genuine.  He offers his best offer, and if you don't want it, then good luck somewhere else.  If that is his MO, I have infinitely more respect than if he makes lowball offers that he knows will get rejected for the purpose of PR.  It legitimizes the way we lost Tejada (didn't want to lowball or offend him), Foulke (competitive), and so many others.

I'm pissed.
Can I say "pissed" on AN?  Well, if anything warrants it, this does.  I have one problem with Macha, but it's a big one.  He does not know how to balance playing time, so that by September his big hitters are not as tired, and his bench players are still in practice.  He had MANY opportunities to do this this year.  He had MANY opportunities to do this last year.  Both years, he didn't, and the team folded down the stretch in September.  That is one thing that in my memory Howe did much better.  Look at how Scioscia handles his backups.  He manages to get playing time for his THIRD string catcher!  He's got players playing a couple of different positions, which makes them more interested, and more versatile down the stretch when the unexpected happens.  Of course there are other things to dislike about Mickey, but this is one area where he does really well, and I feel this has helped the Angels stay in contention through September while Macha's A's wore down and collapsed.

I'm sick of September melt downs.  I thought maybe Wash or Geren or Black or Hershiser might understand this, and figure out how to do it (and it's not easy -- I sure as heck couldn't do it).  But no.

Please, Mach, prove me wrong!!

PT and the tail-end of the roster
It's becoming more and more clear (to me, anyway) that the problems with playing time and the use (non-use) of the last fifth of the active roster are due at least as much to Beane as they are to Macha.

A good RH power DH will make this disappear.
as a concern except for those who are emotionally wrapped around the axle and feel their egos have been exploded by this event. Their irrational hatred of Macha was groundless - who knows what the orders are and the constraints in play. The A's haven't underperformed - they have always been beaten by better teams.
Do you think the A's could have beaten the Yanks - they sure didn't during the season----oh and without two starters in games 4 and 5 --and the one for game 5 is this years probable Cy Young winner. Fact is the A's finished 7 games back cuz we couldnt beat KC and the Twins without Harden.
2003 - Boston had a fearsome lineup and Pedro---we had our usual post season pitching injuries we couldn't overcome.
Position by position not many A's will displace players on the LCS teams in a comparison - and all have equivilent or better pitching.
Macha may not be great but he isn't the difference. Torre left Wang in too long and didn't even have someone warming up.Scoicsia had his thrid string catcher in the game - he could have used Benji. All Managers error.
A healthy Harden and a good RH stick fixes the A's not having a third base coach learn how to manage at the MLB level.

But it was SO MUCH FUN thinking about the future. Something new and fresh and that we weren't ready to strangle with hatred for the way he goes cracktastic on the bullpen and hates Adam Melhuse.

THINK OF THE MELHUSE, PEOPLE.

This makes me sad. I think Blez's assessment of the phone call was right on. Can't wait to see the next interview with Blez and Billy, 'cuz... dude. I mean. DUDE.

No doubt in my mind that Macha realized he wouldn't have teams pounding on his door to pour cash on him, that he had a damn good thing in Oakland, so he came crawling back to Billy on his KNEES. BEGGING. Those KNBR guys are absolute idiots to think otherwise. I wish I was listening at the time, so I could have called them.

I'm so bummed. I was excited. Hell, I was even starting to believe that Wash might have a chance for the job.

I heart Melhuse too....Now I'm sad to know that if he stays his situation won't be much different from this year.  :(

Blez, your comments are priceless.  I love it!  I laughed so hard I almost choked when I read this:

how about a LRP ...
... making league minimum with an ERA/WHIP/BAA of 1.04, 0.92, and .235, respectively?

OK, OK, small sample size (due to Macha's under-utilization of him) ... but why can't Flores simply replace Rincon?

He said the ball hit the ground
Oh sorry, that was soooooo day before yesterday.

His comments were brief. He said that Macha was acting a bit "sheepish" and didn't really want to talk about the deal. Can't remember what else he said, and unfortunately the conversation switched to the stupid pitch that was caught/not caught for AssJack's 3rd strike.

I could care less who is the A's manager. It could be Rene Latchman for all I care, but I would rather Wash teach Johnson to be a better 1B and bring Chavez to a GG form. Let's face it Beane had little choice as to who to pick, 3 choices and that's it in the end when the A's show up at home hopefully I want to see another 'why did Macha have the same lineup as last year', it's always fun to discuss these things with you people.

According to Jason Kendall
"I think everyone had the same reaction," Kendall said. "It's pretty amazing. ... But I'm happy for 'Mach.' He's a good dude, and I think we're gonna have a good team next year."  I think I speak for some people here when I really want to say:

FIRE KENDALL NOW!!

Kidding aside (sort of), I don't think we would have been better off with Geren or Washington or anyone else out there.  The manager pool doesn't exactly scream success except for Tracy, and he doesn't fit our system.  Geren was a very average AAA manager and Wash has never had legitimate success managing (not coaching, managing).

Worst manager in Oaakland A's history?
I've been reading and mostly enjoying the comments both positive and negative on the Macha rehire.  I'm happy with it and glad the guy is coming back but not enough so that I felt like I had to say something until I read the above comment to which I had to say you got to be kidding...
You are either new to the team or the Bay Area or both but anyone who was here during the Steve Boros era witnessed much, MUCH worse.  The guy was clueless as wwas the redoubtable Jackie Moore, Jim Marshall and Bobby WInkles.  Macha has his flaws but worst manager in A's history?  Not even close...

Hahahahaha...oh, man...
My honest initial reaction was to laugh, and then laugh, and then laugh some more. It might be nervous laughter or insanity via trauma, but mainly it's the thought of how many fans are going to be appalled by the decision.

Yes, I was kinda looking forward to a new manager and what he might bring, but the bottom line is that we have a capable team next year. Some astute moves by Billy and we could potentially have a really good team. If the players love Macha and the coaches love Macha, maybe it will inspire enough in this potentially great team to rise above the odd late hook or strange line-up. Maybe.

Point is, I'm willing to put my trust in the guy again. I think pretty much everyone who contributed to this 2005 success (and yes, it was a success despite not making the play-offs) can only go better next year. There's no reason to disbelieve that. Geez..."In Billy We Trust", you say? Doesn't seem like it sometimes.

Macha is not the spanner in the works of a Championship winning machine people think he is. If our team is good enough, he's not bad enough to wreck it.

Please breathe a little easier, folks.

What are you guys, made of stone?
Macha and Beane didn't talk after the A's announced negotiations had broken down Oct. 5. Macha admits now that the two sides probably should have waited a week after an emotional season to begin the discussions.

"It all started with that call," Beane said. "I think it took a lot for him to pick up that phone. It was probably not an easy call for him to make."

Tell me you're not sobbing.

Macha being back doesn't really
surprise me. BB is dealing with a known with Macha. Wash, Geren and Orel are all unknowns as far as their abilities as managers.

I don't think the A's job is very appealing to the majority of baseball. I think the perception is that there is too much micro-managing from the GM's office. I don't know whether this is true or not, but my gut feeling is that there is a great deal of shall we say "help" from the GM's office.

NO FUCKING WAY...
are u serious? wow. I'll have to admit, at first i was one of those who wanted Macha out. But once i started thinking about the A's without their skip who says HATEEberg and karate kicks bathroom doors, and it just wouldn't have been the same. We know the players respect Macha, and we know he cares about all our players. The clubhouse atmosphere was great with him and a change in manager might have brought a change in the vibe and atmosphere. It's so easy to say "what if" with Wash or Geren...but they have no track record and we have no idea how BAD the situation with them could possible get, with all do respect. Bowa and Hersh haven't been here the past 5 years, and they don't know how Moneyball works, and how the A's clubhouse is unique. Common AN, Macha truly cares about his players and this team, and we should welcome him back with open arms next season. He worked with what he had last year and leading our team to 88 wins in a "re-building" year is remarkable. Welcome back MACH!

Macha should get a chance
To finish the job he started. This could be the most talented version of the A's since the bash brothers, and he deserves a chance to have a healthy version to march into battle with. 88 wins out of the rookie injured is very good. Let's see how he does next year with hopefully a less injured squad. He deserved to come back. Go A's!

It seems like...
Macha wont be getting much more money than was first offered. At least, that's what I took out of the article. Billy gave an original offer that, if accepted, would be extremely cost effective.

If he didn't, even better; they could get Wash (though maybe not if Billy was quick to pick Mach back up), or one of the other guys from within.

I've never actually hated him, though I would've preferred Wash or something homegrown. Macha's been with these guys for a while now, and coupled with his growing experience (good or ill) as a manager, should help the A's contend.

the article did mention that the fourth year
extension at $1.2 million in the original offer was eliminated.

Point of order.
Funny dialogue, Blez, but we all know the call to Billy wasn't anything like that.

I say let's show Macha a little respect. I, for one, am so tired of in-fighting.

I like the way Billy runs the team and like the way Macha handles the players.

Why search for a figure-head manager when what we need to find is a big bat to bat DH behind Chavvy.

Billy didn't do anything to dis Macha.

And Macha did not do any crawling.

I thought both Beane and Macha handled the situation with great dignity and candor.

Now let's move on.
