Mulder Traded - Press Release

It's true.  Here's the A's Media Release.  And as Ray Ratto just said on ESPNEWS..."THIS IS CRAZY"

A's Trade Mark Mulder to St. Louis

Acquire RHP Dan Haren, RHP Kiko Calero and Minor League Catcher Daric Barton

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's today traded left-handed pitcher Mark Mulder to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Dan Haren, right-handed pitcher Kiko Calero and minor league catcher Daric Barton.

Mulder went 17-8 with a 4.43 ERA in 33 starts for the Athletics last season, marking his fourth consecutive season of at least 10 wins. He went 9-2 with a 2.76 ERA in 15 starts from April 1 to June 24 and made his second All-Star Game appearance, where he was the starting and winning pitcher for the American League. However, he finished the year by going 0-4 with an 8.31 ERA (32er in 34.2ip) and a .365 opponent batting average over his final seven starts. Mulder ended the season tied for the American League lead in complete games (5), third in winning percentage (.680), fourth in innings pitched (225.2), tied for fourth shutouts (1), fifth in wins and eighth in games started.

Mulder is 81-42 with a 3.92 ERA in 150 career appearances (all starts). His 81 wins rank sixth on Oakland's all-time career list and he also ranks second all-time in career winning percentage (.659), tied for eighth in shutouts (8) and ninth in strikeouts. His 72 wins from 2001-2004 are the second most in the Major Leagues next to Curt Schilling (74). He also ranks second in the Majors with 22 complete games over the last four seasons (Livan Hernandez 24) and tied for second with eight shutouts (Randy Johnson 9). The 27-year old just completed his third year of a four-year contract through 2005 that had a club option for 2006.

Haren was 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 14 games, including five starts, in three stints for the National League champion Cardinals last season. The 6-5, 220-pound 24-year old right-hander allowed 45 hits and 23 runs (earned), walked 17 batters and fanned 32 in his 46.0 innings of work last season. In five post-season appearances, Haren was 1-0 with a 2.17 ERA, earning the win in Game Two of the Divisional Series vs. Los Angeles.  In 28 Major League appearances, including 19 starts, Haren is 6-10 with a 4.85 ERA (64er in 118.2ip). In 21 starts at Triple A-Memphis, Haren was 11-4 with a 4.15 ERA. He led the Pacific Coast League in strikeouts (150) and ranked 10th in ERA. He named the PCL's All-Star Player of the Game after retiring six of the seven batters he faced in a starting assignment.

Calero, a native of Santurce, Puerto Rico, was 3-1 with two saves and a 2.78 ERA in 41 relief appearances for St. Louis last season. He allowed just a .176 opponent batting average (27-153) and fanned 47 in 45.1 innings of work. Calero was 0-0 with a 4.37 ERA (5er in 10.1ip) in nine post-season appearances for the Cards. In 67 career appearances (one start), the 29-year old Calero is 4-2 with three saves and a 2.80 ERA and has yielded just a .193 opponent batting average (56-290).

Barton, a first round pick (28th overall) of the Cardinals in 2003, spent all of last season at Single-A Peoria where he batted .313 with 13 home runs and 77 RBI. The 19-year old also posted a .445 on-base percentage to go along with a .511 slugging percentage.

The trade between the A's and Cardinals is the first major league trade between the two teams since the A's acquired T.J. Mathews and minor league pitchers Blake Stein and Eric Ludwick in exchange for Mark McGwire on July 31, 1997.

Kinda Funny
Going into the off season, people though Zito would be the one traded. Although he still might be it is funny.

As oaktoon said "But Zito must feel more than a bit strange-- on one hand, he's the last guy standing; on the other, he's the last guy standing."

HOLY SHIT!!!!
Never saw that coming.  Damn, well I guess the girls are all pissed that Mulder's not going to be back.

In Billy I trust, but this is getting really wierd.

I expect that the deals aren't done, hes' going to get a veteran starter, he has to.

Message to Barry Zito: "You better eat alot of breakfast next season."

Wow, this is truly the end of an era.

At least they were traded to the NL.

Athletics trade LHP Mulder to Cardinals

December 18, 2004
ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The Oakland Athletics' vaunted trio is down to one.

The St. Louis Cardinals landed the ace they have been looking for, acquiring lefthander Mark Mulder from the Athletics for pitchers Danny Haren and Kiko Calero and catching prospect Daric Barton.

The deal comes just two days after the Athletics sent righthander Tim Hudson to the Atlanta Braves for pitchers Juan Cruz and Dan Meyer and outfielder Charles Thomas.

Prior to the trades, the Athletics had one baseball's best rotations with the "Big Three" of Hudson, Mulder and lefthander Barry Zito.

The Cardinals failed in their bid to acquire Hudson but made sure they landed one of the game's better southpaws in Mulder, whose 72 wins the last four seasons are the second most in baseball behind Curt Schilling's 74.

In Mulder, 27, the defending National League champions get a pitcher entering the prime of his career and the ace their pitching staff had been lacking.

"We are extremely excited to have obtained a pitcher of Mark's caliber," Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty said. "He is the top-of-the-rotation type pitcher that we've been working hard to obtain this offseason. It was difficult to part with the three players that we traded, but to acquire someone like Mulder, we felt that this deal made sense for us in several ways."

The acquisition of Mulder may help ease the loss of shortstop Edgar Renteria, who signed a four-year, $40 million deal with the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

Mulder, who made $4.45 million last season, can become a free agent after next season. An All-Star in each of the last two seasons, Mulder won 13 of his first 15 decisions in 2004 before slumping. He lost his last four starts and finished 17-8 with a 4.43 ERA in 33 starts.

Mulder has won at least 15 games in each of the last four seasons and owns an 81-42 mark with a 3.92 ERA in 150 career games. He won a career-high 21 games in 2001, when he finished second in voting for the American League Cy Young Award.

Continuing to tear apart a cost-conscious team that never won a playoff series with their heralded rotation, Athletics general manager Billy Beane acquired a pair of hurlers who both worked primarily out of the bullpen last season in Haren and Calero, both of whom pitched in the World Series.

Just 24 and with a live arm, Haren went 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 14 games, including five starts, last season. The righthander made 14 starts as a rookie in 2003 and could be moved into the rotation in Oakland, joining Zito and Rich Harden.

Haren owns an overall record of 6-10 with a 4.85 in 28 games, including 19 starts in two seasons.

Calero, who turns 30 on January 9, was a valuable member of the bullpen last season, going 3-1 with two saves and a 2.78 ERA in 41 games.

As a rookie in 2003, Calero went 1-1 with one save and a 2.82 ERA in 26 appearances.

A 2003 first-round pick, Barton spent last season with Class A Peoria of the Midwest League, batting .313 with 13 homers and 77 RBI in 90 games.

You Guys are Missing the Point
Billy Beane has given up on next season.

He just traded away our 2 best players and got ... two relievers, a fourth outfielder, another catching prospect and a couple of starting pitching prospects.

If the A's were going to compete this year he needed to bring in some more MLB-ready pitching and an outfielder.

Sadly, it's time to face reality.

Shit Eck
Beane is redefining what reality is in Oakland.

by grover on Dec 18, 2004 5:27 PM PST up reply actions

That Doesn't Make Any Sense
Hudson and Mulder were a lot more marketable than a bunch of prospects. If Billy thought we could compete this year, he would have gotten the secondbaseman and outfielder we needed thatway.

Billy faced reality and saw we couldn't beat the Red Sox, Yankees and Angels this year.

He did a good job re-stocking for 2007.

It makes some sense
Flipping these guys for a bat and/or starter instead of just trading Huddy and Mulder directly for those guys makes sense if you are dealing with teams in similar financial situations to us.  For instance, Cincy was interested in Huddy, but couldn't get involved because he made too much money and they couldn't resign him (sound familiar?).  Maybe they would want Meyer, or Cruz, or Haren, etc. and could deliver us the bat(s) we so desperately still need.

blind-sided....
that's all i can say. the rat's comments on ESPNews reflect my feelings perfectly...the A's will be lucky to win 65 games next season.

Anticipate all yo uwant
The A's are not going to get a big OF bat OR a veteran starting pitcher.  They're cutting payroll and for whatever reason, re-tooling.

Remember 93-97...because if you don't, next year will definitely bring back those glorious days.
