Catcher Bruce Maxwell named PCL Player of the Week

+

Catcher Bruce Maxwell was a 2nd-round pick back in 2012, but the A's have taken their time developing him. It's starting to look like he was worth the wait, as he is now crushing the Triple-A Pacific Coast League and has earned Player of the Week honors. It was a short week due to the league's All-Star break, but in four games Maxwell went 11-for-17 with 4 HR, 2 BB, and no strikeouts. His wRC+ now stands at 140, which is top-20 in the 16-team league. It's looking more and more like we'll see Maxwell in Oakland later this summer.

Oakland A's acquire LHP Ross Detwiler for cash

3

Detwiler is a 30-year-old left-hander who made his name as a starter with the Nationals a few years ago. However, he has fallen off the last couple seasons and currently looks like filler -- he's not even going on the 40-man roster. Presumably, he is a replacement for Nick Tepesch, who was DFA'd on Friday. Triple-A Nashville's rotation could use the help.

Ryon Healy's first MLB hit is a 3-run homer

+

Healy went 0-for-4 in his debut Friday. He's already doing better on Saturday. Congrats on your first hit, Ryon! I hope that whoever caught it in the stands finds a way to get the ball back to you.

Krazy George is koming for you!

1

Krazy George Henderson is a professional cheerleader, and he is generally credited with inventing The Wave at an Oakland A's game in 1981. That might make you really like him or really despise him, but either way he's just one more example of the A's leaving their indelible mark on baseball history. Also, he is krazy.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred supports new stadium in Oakland for A's

54

Unlike his predecessor, Commissioner Manfred is at least saying the things we want to hear as the quest for a new stadium drags on and on and on. He has previously stated a desire to keep the A's in Oakland, but is this the first time he's pointed to it as a specifically desirable place for MLB to be? He's echoing what I think a lot of us are saying, which is that this would be a terrible time to leave a city that appears to be on a rapid ascent. stAy

Scott Ostler writes a bad article

"I'm not suggesting that you actually attend an A's game." (paywalled, unfortunately)

Oakland A's walk off against Angels on Billy Burns single

+

The A's took a 2-1 lead into the 9th inning, but Ryan Madson blew the save on a sac fly by the pesky Johnny Giavotella. No matter, though, because Oakland pieced together a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame to seal the deal. My favorite part is that Burns' hit squeaked past Andrelton Simmons, the elite defensive shortstop the Angels gave all their trade chips for last winter. LOLangels.

Josh Reddick catching fly balls during BP today!

+

Reddick has apparently been out for BP for the last few days. Today he was in center, caught whatever came his way and even scaled the wall a few times. Great to see.
