Around SBN: Keith Hernandez Reacts To Gary Carter's Passing

Open Game Thread: Game 126 - A's at Toronto

The A's and Joe Blanton with his 10-8 record and 3.94 ERA take on the Toronto Blue Jays and Frank Thomas.  Well, Thomas isn't pitching, but he's probably the most interesting thing about this matchup.  The Jays send Shaun "Halladay" Marcum to the mound with his 10-4 record and 3.31 ERA.  Marcum is proving to be a stud when the Jays have needed one.  Not only that, but he shares a birthday with both myself and Scott Hatteberg (December 14) so he can't be all bad.

Seriously though, Marcum started the season 4-3 with a 3.62 ERA and has a 6-1 record with a 2.76 ERA since the All Star break.  Even worse for the A's offense, Marcum is actually 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA over his last three starts.  He's getting better and better.  Hopefully the A's get to him early or it could be a long night of no support for Big Joe.

The A's lineup looks like this:

Stewart
Swisher
Cust
Piazza
Ellis
DaVanon
Scutaro
Hannahan
Suzuki

It's funny how much I used to dislike DaVanon when he wore Angel red.  He always seemed to somehow hurt the A's.  But frankly, the past is the past and I'm willing to let it all go as long as DaVanon comes through for the A's and helps the most injured A's team of all time reach .500.

The Jays lineup looks like this:

Johnson
Overbay
Rios
Wells
Thomas
Glaus
Adams
Thigpen
McDonald

If Blanton has anything going for him tonight it's that he seems to be better against righties (although not by a huge margin) and many of the Jays biggest hitters are righties.  Blanton also has a complete game four-hitter, one run game against the Jays on July 3 earlier this year.  And Big Joe did seem to get his confidence back for the first time out in a long time his last time out.  Of course it was against the White Sox inept offense.

By the way, in case you haven't heard, Buck went on the DL today.  The A's are on the cusp of tying the Oakland record for number of times the DL has been used.  If you're going to come this close, you might as well break it.  So maybe we can get Calero to get a hangnail or something?

LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

It was a typo.

It was "Murphy" not "Marco".  The typist is on the DL and her replacement just doesn't have the VORT level the team needs right now.

Yeah, seriously...

what happened to Murphy, did he get hurt or something?  I mean, he was just starting to get comfortable at the plate.  But, I guess we can't have anyone hitting "too" well.

Two comments from that inning:
  1. Bad baserunning, IMO, by Scutaro not forcing a difficult turn and throw to the plate by Marcum (on Suzuki's ball)
  1. The 3-1 pitch to Swisher was VERY close, but I thought it was ball 4.

Swisher, Piazza, and Ellis were the only projected starters in this lineup at the beginning of the year (if you subscribe to the Shannon Stewart, lifetime 4th outfielder theory).

True story.

The receptionist at work is... odd. One day, she calls over to my office, which at the time was in the lobby, and asks if I have anyone in the lobby.

"Yeah, three people just walked in."

"Well, is one of them wearing a black shirt?"

"No."

"Did you see anyone wearing a black shirt come in."

"No, why?"

"Well, keep you eyes out for a guy wearing a black shirt."

"Okay, why?" I'm having to drag this out of her.

"Because there's a truck on fire across the street and I saw a guy wearing a black shirt running from it."

WHAT? This is the information you have to tell me? At least she is calm under pressure.

So, this guy in the black shirt cannot be found. Flames are shooting out from his truck. We finally call the fire department. As soon as we did, here comes the guy in the black shirt. He had walked to the gas station across the street and brought back a bottled water. I don't know what he was planning on doing with it.

Anyway, this guy throws open the hood of the truck... and, I swear, pulls out TWO cast iron skillets. TWO skillets from under the hood of his truck. He throws them in the bed of the truck and the trash in there starts smoking. The fire department arrives, puts out the blaze, all is well. Ten minutes later the guy strolls in to the lobby wanting to use the restroom.

Me: "Sure, help yourself. Rough morning?" :P

The guy comes out of the bathroom and walks back up to my desk.

"Hi, I have a ten o'clock interview. Sorry I'm late."

I DIED.

Some of my favorite seasons are when the Yanks

lose in the WS.  The 2001 series against Arizona was an unbelievable high even if the A's weren't playing.

I know I'm going to sound like

a loser, but that WS got me hooked on baseball.

You don't "sound" like a loser, Jennifer.

You ARE a LOSER.  There is a difference.

It hooked my daughters too.

Well, that and Derek Jeter.  I took them to see an A's Yankee's game the next year.  They couldn't believe that people they saw on TV were so close to them.  Oddly, the A's are starting to steal their affections.  Guess Jete just ain't what he used to be.

BTW. That was a very painful playoff loss

to NY and I thought that I had swore off baseball in 2001.  For some odd reason I forced myself to turn the WS on anyway and I'm sure glad that I did.  When Luis Gonzalez got that hit to win the game it was if I was truly a Diamondbacks' fan.

It was a magical year...
9/11 not withstanding.  That was truly the year you felt that the sun was finally setting on the Yankee empire.

My dad died on 8/24/01 and 9/11 was almost
too tough to handle because they both happened so closely to each other.  The A's truly made my life tolerable and I'll never forget what an important role baseball always seems to play in my life.  Why did Jorge Posada have to ruin my Saturday night?  WHY?  Zito was unbelievable with the exception of that one pitch.

That's sort of my story.

I was watching 9/11 coverage around the clock. Literally. I was down in the dumps. I continued my obsession with the media coverage of 9/11 by watching the Yankees in the playoffs. I cried. Eventually, I wanted AZ to win but I started to following the Yankees the following season. Later that season it moved to the A's and I've been hooked ever since.

It's odd the effect that one
World Series had on so many people.  To tell the truth, I'm very pleased the Yankee's made a run of it....all the way to the seventh game.  I was happy that they won all three of their home games.  The city needed the lift, and the Yankee's gave it to them.  It's fitting that they lost.  Who could have ever been happy cheering a victory under such a cloud?  Hearing ohtobe's story as well as your own makes it such a personal game.  Innoncence lost, but redemption won.

Baseball is such a glorious game.  When you think you've had enough, it sucks you back in as only it can.

I'm throwing all of my support behind

Seattle for the rest of the season.  I hope they can either keep the Angels or Yanks out of the postseason.  That would be nice to see.

However, Seattle's payroll (7th overall at 107K) is getting pretty ridiculous so it's hard to see why they wouldn't be competing at this level.
