Open Game Thread: Game 126 - A's at Toronto
The A's and Joe Blanton with his 10-8 record and 3.94 ERA take on the Toronto Blue Jays and Frank Thomas. Well, Thomas isn't pitching, but he's probably the most interesting thing about this matchup. The Jays send Shaun "Halladay" Marcum to the mound with his 10-4 record and 3.31 ERA. Marcum is proving to be a stud when the Jays have needed one. Not only that, but he shares a birthday with both myself and Scott Hatteberg (December 14) so he can't be all bad.
Seriously though, Marcum started the season 4-3 with a 3.62 ERA and has a 6-1 record with a 2.76 ERA since the All Star break. Even worse for the A's offense, Marcum is actually 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA over his last three starts. He's getting better and better. Hopefully the A's get to him early or it could be a long night of no support for Big Joe.
The A's lineup looks like this:
Stewart
Swisher
Cust
Piazza
Ellis
DaVanon
Scutaro
Hannahan
Suzuki
It's funny how much I used to dislike DaVanon when he wore Angel red. He always seemed to somehow hurt the A's. But frankly, the past is the past and I'm willing to let it all go as long as DaVanon comes through for the A's and helps the most injured A's team of all time reach .500.
The Jays lineup looks like this:
Johnson
Overbay
Rios
Wells
Thomas
Glaus
Adams
Thigpen
McDonald
If Blanton has anything going for him tonight it's that he seems to be better against righties (although not by a huge margin) and many of the Jays biggest hitters are righties. Blanton also has a complete game four-hitter, one run game against the Jays on July 3 earlier this year. And Big Joe did seem to get his confidence back for the first time out in a long time his last time out. Of course it was against the White Sox inept offense.
By the way, in case you haven't heard, Buck went on the DL today. The A's are on the cusp of tying the Oakland record for number of times the DL has been used. If you're going to come this close, you might as well break it. So maybe we can get Calero to get a hangnail or something?
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

I thought Stewart was going to get a day off
supposedly his feet or legs are sore, and the A's are facing a week of artificial turf games.
DJ must be "numb", as he put it
Put him on the DL!
Just do it! Break that f-ing record!
Man
I would love to have a proper 3-6 like Rios, Wells, Thomas, and Glaus.
I've heard Marcum is seen by some
as "future closer material". Hopefully that means he'll run out of gas the second time through the order or something.
so, uh, what happened to ...
... "Marco, you're not going to be a starter from here on out"?
It was a typo.
It was "Murphy" not "Marco". The typist is on the DL and her replacement just doesn't have the VORT level the team needs right now.
Yeah, seriously...
what happened to Murphy, did he get hurt or something? I mean, he was just starting to get comfortable at the plate. But, I guess we can't have anyone hitting "too" well.
"on the cusp"
Yes, the verge is so last year... ;)
What is this?
We've scored 2 runs in the first inning???
Joe Blanton's splits:
Home: 2.62 ERA
Road: 5.49 ERA

Two comments from that inning:
- Bad baserunning, IMO, by Scutaro not forcing a difficult turn and throw to the plate by Marcum (on Suzuki's ball)
- The 3-1 pitch to Swisher was VERY close, but I thought it was ball 4.
i saw him start and then pitcher looked at him
first and then threw at first. it looked like marco didnt run out very far

What a lineup
Swisher, Piazza, and Ellis were the only projected starters in this lineup at the beginning of the year (if you subscribe to the Shannon Stewart, lifetime 4th outfielder theory).
It's starting to look like the Indians from Major League. Oh wait, they are trying to move the team...
Hey Pam, I'm sorry I wasn't on time, but I

Hey Billy, do ya still feel like benching Scutaro?
And Hannahan is looking better and better!
F*** the Heck!
Hannahanahan!
Scutaro is on fire...
along with Hanahan.
I think the A's are gunna ride Scutaro's hot streak until it goes away, then bench him. If they can get Scutaro's #'s up, it will make it easier to trade him in the off season.
Scutaro is scared

If we have to lose (and boy do we) I'd rather see the Royals beat us than the annoying Angels or, even worse, the thoroughly evil Yankees. Getting beat by the Royals is like dropping your ice cream cone, but a nice puppy gets to eat it.

I'm in Royals' country so it hurts a little

How far out of the wild card are we? cuz I heard

Just neglecting AN.
I've been looking at cheap-ass hotels with kitchenettes in Phoenix, because I figure I should book something (refundably) on the very very very very off chance that I'll actually be able to go to ST.
Motel 6 ain't the greatest but I stayed
there a few years ago in San Antonio (Final Four) because there were no other hotels. Surprisingly the one with the kitchenette also had Internet availibility and was clean. Make it happen, Poppy! Just do it!!

I meant the husband/wife combo killing. I don't

True story.
The receptionist at work is... odd. One day, she calls over to my office, which at the time was in the lobby, and asks if I have anyone in the lobby.
"Yeah, three people just walked in."
"Well, is one of them wearing a black shirt?"
"No."
"Did you see anyone wearing a black shirt come in."
"No, why?"
"Well, keep you eyes out for a guy wearing a black shirt."
"Okay, why?" I'm having to drag this out of her.
"Because there's a truck on fire across the street and I saw a guy wearing a black shirt running from it."
WHAT? This is the information you have to tell me? At least she is calm under pressure.
So, this guy in the black shirt cannot be found. Flames are shooting out from his truck. We finally call the fire department. As soon as we did, here comes the guy in the black shirt. He had walked to the gas station across the street and brought back a bottled water. I don't know what he was planning on doing with it.
Anyway, this guy throws open the hood of the truck... and, I swear, pulls out TWO cast iron skillets. TWO skillets from under the hood of his truck. He throws them in the bed of the truck and the trash in there starts smoking. The fire department arrives, puts out the blaze, all is well. Ten minutes later the guy strolls in to the lobby wanting to use the restroom.
Me: "Sure, help yourself. Rough morning?" :P
The guy comes out of the bathroom and walks back up to my desk.
"Hi, I have a ten o'clock interview. Sorry I'm late."
I DIED.
These are the days of your Missouri life.
Did anyone question him about the CAST IRON SKILLETS? He is Dexter! Holy shit. He is the modern-day Dexter!!

I'll root for the Yankee's over the Angels
any day. So what if NY wins another world series. That's like reading the paper and finding out that Bill Gates made another hundred million. Your first thought is "only a hundred?" The Angels owe us another 50 years of futility before they ever see the WS again.
Some of my favorite seasons are when the Yanks

BTW. That was a very painful playoff loss
to NY and I thought that I had swore off baseball in 2001. For some odd reason I forced myself to turn the WS on anyway and I'm sure glad that I did. When Luis Gonzalez got that hit to win the game it was if I was truly a Diamondbacks' fan.

That's sort of my story.
I was watching 9/11 coverage around the clock. Literally. I was down in the dumps. I continued my obsession with the media coverage of 9/11 by watching the Yankees in the playoffs. I cried. Eventually, I wanted AZ to win but I started to following the Yankees the following season. Later that season it moved to the A's and I've been hooked ever since.
It's odd the effect that one
Baseball is such a glorious game. When you think you've had enough, it sucks you back in as only it can.
I'm throwing all of my support behind
Seattle for the rest of the season. I hope they can either keep the Angels or Yanks out of the postseason. That would be nice to see.
However, Seattle's payroll (7th overall at 107K) is getting pretty ridiculous so it's hard to see why they wouldn't be competing at this level.
