Open Thread: Game 88 - A's vs. Mariners

Well, here we are, at the part of the season that will decide the remaining games...will the A's be buyers or sellers?

One team is hard enough to catch; let alone two, and the A's are in danger every day of falling out of the race completely. They simply must put together some wins, starting with the game today--the last game before the All-Star Break.

They have a good shot on the mound, as Joe Blanton, who has been amazing for the last month, faces off against LHP Ryan Feierabend, someone the A's haven't seen before. Here's to good pitching from Blanton, and timely hitting from the offense.

One day at a time. That's all we still have left. The Angels are losing big right now, so with a win, we can knock a game off in the standings.

Sadly, the WC teams

are now on par with the Angels, meaning we can't catch either without catching both. Of course, when you're one game over .500 it's hardly worth worrying about...Need. Some. Wins. Like a lot in a row, preferably three or four in a row just today.

We could also use

Some of those hotspots, like in NBA Jam TE, where you can score multiple runs if you hit it to a certain spot.  We'd probably break 50 if they gave us five runs every time we grounded into a double play.  It would also further validate Beane's strategy of acquiring hitters who are strong enough to roll over and ground any pitch thrown with a man on first.

Need Offence?

Maybe we should DFA Swisher or Johnson Or Stewart?

Anyone think that would help produce more runs?

Billy?

I really hate to say it - but we are D O N E.

I will still watch and pull for the A's like I have since 1970 though.

Apparently, while Swisher may bring offense, he can't bring "offence". We're looking at it all wrong!

Scouts at the game

Sounds like Beane put out some bait and trying to reel in some trades.  Out there as bait are kenedy, keilty(activated today), and Piazza.  A few teams are interested in Piazza and how well keilty does he could be traded too.  If kkenedy pitches out of the starting rotation soon then its because the A's are show caseing him for a team.

Today is the day!

Big win coming today. I can feel it. We need to go into the ASB with a good taste in our mouths...maybe like Grolsch or Widmer...

Oh yeah, I think Daric should at least get a few ab's...just in case it is lightning in a bottle...

Start selling

Sadly, we are not going to catch the other teams in front of us.  Ship off Kennedy, DJ, and Piazza and bring up Barton.  Now, if we win 10 in a row, I'll change my tune, but since we can't win 3 in a row, I'm not going to hold my breath.

by sprtsnwyn on Jul 8, 2007 11:57 AM PDT reply actions

I hear ya, but...

I wouldn't give up right now. Piazza is on the way out anyway and probably to a national league team. That has to be the only reason the A's would have him work on his catching. Kennedy is no great loss, and what would you get for him? Let's see what the next couple of weeks bring the A's and then decide.

A's, baby!

by Coach Cleats on Jul 8, 2007 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

agree on Kennedy

he was solid in the bullpen last year and i think that's where his role is when Loaiza comes back. his value is probably as low as its ever been this year and we werent going to get a lot for him anyway.

by oak1 on Jul 8, 2007 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

i'd hold onto Piazza

and take the draft picks next year when he walks no matter where the a's are when the trade deadline comes up. there arent many teams out there that are going to give up top prospects for a DH or part time catcher whose catching skills are on the decline. plus having Piazza on the team is going to help the younger guys like Swish and Suzuki like Thomas did last year.

by oak1 on Jul 8, 2007 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

draft picks

Are you saying nobody wants Piazza?  If so, what makes you think we get draft picks for him?

We only get draft picks if another team signs him, and if they don't sign him before Dec 7 we only get the picks if we first offer him arbitration.

Last year San Diego declined to offer arbitration to Piazza, so they didn't get any picks when we signed him.  I think something similar will happen after this year.

selling Piazza now

isnt selling high. i'm hoping for a strong second half from him and i think he'll probably want to go back to a NL team next year anyway rather than come back as DH.

He was especially indignant about the condescending attitudes of many scientists towards alternative traditions. Luckily, he comes from the tradition of pitching that celebrates yielding runs in great abundance.

Buyers and sellers

The buyer-seller dichotomy is exaggerated in general and certainly doesn't apply to the A's.

I used to get frustrated reading all the posts here about how we should give up on this season and become "sellers".  But as I read the detailed proposals from these posters, I realize that most of them only want to "sell" the borderline junk players that we ought to try to trade anyway, and even as a "seller" they aren't willing to give up anyone any good.  If that's what it means to be a seller, then sure, sell away.

Cust in RF

we need to find out if he can play an acceptable level of defense anyways assuming the master plan still is to have both him and Piazza in the lineup in the second half.

Kielty's just coming off the DL and was sore after playing 9 innings in the OF for Sacramento on friday, so i guess this is just precautionary.

kendall and crosby

both competing for the cellar at this point.

an interesting study in contrasts: kendall has absolutely no power and gets robbed in shallow OF while crosby keeps hitting them hard without a plan, right at the fielders. kendall looks like he's lost his eye at the plate this season, his walks are way down. crosby looks like one of the dumbest hitters in the league right now. he's absolutely adamant about not making adjustments and sticking with his swing while the pitchers have him figured out.

by kapers on Jul 8, 2007 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Ichiro

had no idea the ball was there.

It bounced off Lopez running for home and rolled slowly off to the side.  Ichiro was just out to high-five the runner who came in, didn't even see the ball.

And Ellison didn't shove Blanton nearly as hard as Blanton shoved Ichiro.

It was a cheap shot in that

Blanton shoved Ichiro far harder than necessary (probably understandable, heat of battle, frustration, etc, but still, not good), then stared at Ichiro for 5 seconds before picking up the ball (not good at all).

Ellison responded with a shove, and all downhill from there.

Double fielded by Stewart, hit Crosby, who threw

home. His throw was deflected at the plate by whoever was sliding in (Ichiro?) and Kendall lost track of the ball. Blanton finds it, pushes a loitering Ichiro out of the way and then gets bumped by Ellison.

Followed by a bench clearing, lots of posturing and erm, handbags at 10 paces. Your typical baseball 'fight'.

I thought it was how Jason Ellison

took Blanton's shove of Ichiro.

In all fairness to Blanton

I'd be pretty PO'ed too if my team can't score runs for crap (especially off a guy with a 9 something ERA) and manages to not score a single run with the bases loaded and no outs.

"We were s--, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

Thats not why hes frustrated!

Hes frustrated cause he couldnt eat Ichiro

DiNardo: Hey Kurt, do you eat babies? Suzuki: Yes.

OH yes...

yes he could.  I had to laugh at the Mariner who attempted to puff up.  I actually did laugh when he raised his hands into a fighting posture and then slowly lowered them when Joe advanced.  I guess he thought maybe it wasn't such a good idea.

Lip reading

I think the Mariners were looking for a place to get dim sum, and Blanton emphatically recommended this place several times.

We will soon know if our

pathetic offense can be enraged.  The Mariners are pretty much mocking them as a potent force.  It damn well is Ichiro's job to know where the ball is, especially when it's in play, and most especially if he is on the field.  Blanton had every right to push him out of the way.  He' trying to field a live ball.

Casilla is pitching with an attitude.  Maybe this little dust up when waken the team from its lethargy.

Prewtty close to right...

...What bothers me is that the ball is in play. One man from the opposing team (Sexton) is the on-deck batter and deserves to be on/around that circle. The rest of Seattle is supposed to be in the dugout. Why was Ichiro even out there? For me the proper call would be the moment Ichiro didn't clear away from the ball, he interferred and all runners return to the base where they were. Whether Ichiro saw the ball is beside the point. If for some reason it was OK for him to be where he was, he still had the duty to move as far away from the ball as he could. If this is all wrong, them why not bring both dugouts out and let them lounge around. This way the catcher, third baseman, first baseman, etc., can't 'get through the crowd to catch any ball.

No one suspended?

Good call by umps.

Blanton was out of line, but it wasn't a suspension-worthy offense.

Ellison's retaliation is excusable given that Blanton started it.

I don't think he was out of line pushing Ichiro

but he definitely was when he grabbed his junk and threw F-bombs towards Seattle.  He made it worse by continuing to jar with them.

Pretty nice job of damage control by Casilla.

I have to concentrate on something positive.

Did Joe get tossed, or just pulled by Geren?

Casilla didn't seem to throw more than the standard warmup, where if Blanton was tossed he'd have as many tosses as he wanted.

Well, anyway...

I'm off to the bookstore to pick up something for my upcoming vacation.

It will be different not obsessively trying to catch A's scores this time.

As for the "fight," Blanton was more frustrated than anything else.  Ichiro didn't get out of the way.  But Blanton didn't bother to pick up the ball right away.  He was more interested in shoving Ichiro.  Ellison was sticking up for his star teammate.  I'm not surprised he wasn't tossed.

Hey, what a surprise!  More crappy offense.
