Milton Bradley Designated for Assignment
Hmmmmmm......
OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland Athletics announced today the club has designated outfielder Milton Bradley for assignment and has selected infielder Kevin Melillo from Triple-A Sacramento.
Bradley is batting .292 with two home runs and seven RBI in 19 games this season. He had three stints on the disabled list due to various injuries. He was most recently placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 3 with a strained right calf and was activated for Wednesday’s game against Cincinnati. Bradley had five stints on the DL in his two seasons with the A’s. He missed 51 games due to injury this season, 59 last year, 85 in 2005 and 61 in 2003.
Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, the 25-year old Melillo was batting .267 with 21 doubles, six triples, seven home runs and 40 RBI in 67 games for Sacramento this season, seeing all of his action at second base. He also had a .465 slugging percentage and a .368 on-base percentage.

OaklandA23
works for the A's I think.
Yeah
I would assume this is a joke coming from anyone else, but OaklandA23 has consistently posted press releases just before they showed up on the official site.
So I have to echo ArakSOT's WTF?
I heard this on MLB radio
6 minutes before he posted it... check my posting in the other thread on the main page, but I don't think it appeared online anywhere so he definitely has immediate access to press releases.

Thank you, OaklandA23
and the whole organization for having respect for this site and the fans for posting team press releases on AN as well as the mainstream sites.

That explains...
...why he threw two chairs down the stairs on his way out of the clubhouse yesterday.
wow, must have gotten hurt again
I can see it from Billy's eyes - why keep this guy on the 40-man when he'll be gone at the end of the year and we need the room to protect our young players.
Bravo for having the balls to do it.
either that
or he did something to wear out his welcome

If you can't DFA a player who's on the DL
then the A's probably felt they had to cut bait.

Here's something from todays CC Times...
Bradley back
Milton Bradley was activated from the 15-day disabled list and started in right field after being sidelined since June 2 with a strained right calf. The A's optioned infielder J.J. Furmaniak to Triple-A Sacramento to make room for Bradley on the 25-man roster.
Bradley went 0-for-3 with a walk. He took a called third strike in his final at-bat and appeared to have some heated words for home plate umpire Tim Timmons until Geren came out to pick up the discussion.
Bradley was still upset about something as he left the clubhouse after the game. As he climbed the stairs just outside the clubhouse, Bradley threw a couple of plastic chairs down the stairs and shouted expletives. Asked about the incident, general manager Billy Beane said he and Bradley had a discussion but described it as a "private thing."
"He wasn't that upset when he left (the meeting)," Beane said. "You just never know. We'll check on him (today)."
Bradley wasn't available for comment.
Looks like from that article in the other thread
he flipped out for some reason, and the A's did a Jose Guillen on him.
over a few plastic chairs?
you'd think beane of all people wouldn't mind.
maybe if he also got hurt once again, but if he is finally healthy and able to contribute, i don't get this at all.
only wooden chairs can be thrown...
apparently
Man, this pisses me off

who else would you put on waivers
since Chavy got hurt? Needed to call up someone to play 3B and Murphy and Furm aren't eligible. Chavez basically cost Milton his job.
i thought we (or rather, sal) established
that's not the way it works, and that if chavez goes on the DL, we could call up murphy or jjf?
Chavez won't go on the DL
That's the problem - need a 3B for a few days
scutaro?
Doesn't have the arm.
Scoot will play 3rd, Melillo will cover the middle if needed.
i'm sure he'll be the new scutaro
with scutaro at 3b if chavy is hurt.
With Crosby's history
I guess Beane wants extra infield insurance.
ok
but it still didn't need to be at the expense of Bradley

Free agency looms...
..and he can't stay on the field for longer than two days.
Though I'd like to see them DL him and let him heal for a change, rather than throw him out there as soon as he can hobble.
best outfielder?
have you seen him play much this year or last? wasn't going to be here next year whereas all the other young outfielders have a much better chance to stick.
this isn't next year
Stewart's not going to be here in 2008, either.
And no I haven't seen him play all that much, no one has.
by Cutthemullet on Jun 21, 2007 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions
How much say-so does the player have?
It's well known that Chavez doesn't want to go on the DL, but can he block it in a similar way that a player with a no-trade clause can block a trade? Not that I'm aware of.
Why can't the team say "Dude, You need to get healthy so we can win, and you're a huge part of that. You're on the DL to get healty. Deal with it.".
No player's can't block
a DL move. The team can ask their opinion, but ultimately the decision resides with the club.
by IndianaAsfan on Jun 21, 2007 10:32 AM PDT up reply actions
That's what I thought.
Sure, you don't want to give a player a bad attitude, but it's the team's ultimate decision, as it should be.
The A's had other options
Right now the A's have 13 pitchers on the staff. They could easily have swapped Mellilo for Lewis or Flores, and sent the other one down for Harden. That would have bought an extra few days before Piazza is activated to make some kind of move.
This decision was made about Bradley, not about numbers.

at least he can play
whereas if Bradley tweaked that hammy again and was going to need to sit for a few days, I can see Beane going ballistic on him.
yeah, but
it's not like we're down to our last man, health-wise. May seem like we are, granted, but...Bradley/Stewart, Kotsay, Swish, Buck, DJ, Cust for OF/DH/1B. Even Scutaro/Kendall in a pinch...plus, they could call up Piazza at any time.

right.
i'm really hoping that's the case, that Beane felt prospective deals for Bradley were taking too long and, to speed up the process, designated him.
the meeting between he and Bradley might have been informing him that he was being shopped and could be designated in the process. couldn't have been an easy discussion.
think about the trade to oakland
we traded a AA outfielder who most saw as a potential #4/AAAA guy for Bradley AND Perez, back when Perez was a serious prospect. How much does that say about how he's viewed in the league? He's worn out his welcome in a few places.

Call me a dummy, but...
What does "Designate for assignment" mean anyways? That basically he's been released???
from the wikiworld:
Designated for assignment is a contractual term used in Major League Baseball. When a player is designated for assignment, he is immediately removed from the club's 40-man roster. This gives the club 10 days to decide what to do with the player while freeing up a roster spot for another transaction, if needed. After designating a player for assignment, the club must make one of the following contractual moves.
those 3 moves: place him on waivers, trade him, or release him.
they're going to turn him into a woman
No, wait -- my bad. I'm thinking of "Designated for reassignment."
They're going to set him up with Flava Flav.
No, wait, that'd be Flava of DFA.
Will you miss him?
He had a great playoff series for us last year, but other than that, he's been pretty worthless. Would you rather have Ethier back now?
Ha!
Haven't you seen the outfield wall in Arizona since he joined them?

LOL!
He was a kick when he was here in Sac. We get a little more access to the players here, and was absolutely a great guy to talk to. I wish him well where ever he destroys walls.

i agree he's exciting
I like watching Milton, but I don't get the shock of DFA'ing a player who hasn't stayed healthy his entire career and was probably headed for his 4th DL trip this year. I'd like to have a healthy Milton on my team as a solid CF, but not what Milton has become. Would he be DFA'd if we didn't have a serious roster crunch looming? No. Would he play 50 games the rest of the season? No.
there are lots of fringe roster guys...
to choose from. Milton's a core player when healthy.
I'd rather see Chavez DFA'ed frankly.

I agree that DFA'ing Milton is WTF-y, but Chavez would have significant trade value.
yes, he would
and we could work out a trade once we DFA'ed him
by Cutthemullet on Jun 21, 2007 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions
You're off your rocker
Once you DFA a player you can surely work out a trade, but you have 0 leverage. The other team can just say "We don't want to give up what you're asking for and if you don't like it then you can just lose him to the waiver wire."
by Helloooo 1st on Jun 21, 2007 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, but...
...I'm not convinced Chavez is doing the team any great favors by doing that. Sure, they still get his defense, and that's no small thing, but maybe it would be better to bite the bullet now and get him healthy so he can be all that much more effective on both defense AND offense later when it's "crunch time".
Type of injury?
Just thinking out loud, but for Chavez it's his wrists, for Bradley it's his hamstrings. I would think that would make a difference between sitting and playing through.
by FormerHuntsvilleStar on Jun 21, 2007 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions
not really
It doesn't matter if Stewart is healthy or not, because if he's hurt, there is no dropoff...he's the prototypical replacement player. Bradley is an actual upgrade over who would otherwise be playing

Makes sense now. Damn, I liked Milt. Swish is probably pissed too. Who's gonna "Get on the train" with him now? I guess Scutaro was practicing all this time for a reason, huh?
Et Tu Scutaro?
Could it be Scutaro manipulated the entire situation so that he could replace Milton in the Swisher/Bradley homerun celebration?
Can DFA-ing be used
simply to clear a roster space for 10 days, at the end of which the DFA-ed player is put back on the roster ?

It's not as if fighting hasn't been part of the game. I recall reading a story in Baseball Digest, where a catcher was grumbling about the plate umpire's calls of balls and strikes all game long. A close play at the plate, and the ump called the runner out. The catcher got back in his crouch, and muttered,
"Figures. That guy was safe. You couldn't even get that call right."
At which, the ump threw the catcher out of the game. At which, the catcher wound up and clocked the ump, knocking him out...COLD!!

Rotoworld Take
Athletics designated outfielder Milton Bradley for assignment.
Bradley had to have done something to really upset management and/or his teammates. Sure, the club was at least a little frustrated about his frequent injuries, but he was playing pretty well when he was able to take the field, batting .292/.373/.446 in 65 at-bats. Maybe the A's will be able to trade him for some relief help, though he'll have little value left now that the team has to move him.
I was going to say, doesn't this seriously
decrease his value? I wonder if we can get anything meaningful for him?
not necessarily.
if BB has a couple of deals to choose from, it may just speed up the rate at which things happen.
Karma's a bitch, eh?
Melillo
I stated in another thread that i felt like Suzuki has the next couple of weeks to be showcased for a trade. For some reason i think Melillo is too. If he's nto being showcased, then why not just bring Piazza back now as DH, since the glut in the outfield has been reduced by one. Cust can play left. Please trade Dan Johnson!!!
Is there a deal to be had with

i'm going to say a little prayer for him
and pat him on the bobblehead when I get home.
I hearted Milton, but this situation reeks of self-destruction; why would Milton be unhappy in Oakland? He's probably just frustrated he can't play, but it must be bothering him to a point where Beane and Co. are seeing major red flags.
I was wondering if it maybe had something to do
with his rehab work? Maybe he wasn't following doctor's orders to come back and stay healthy and Billy called him on it?
Build Up
I'm sure it was a couple things:
- Always being hurt - Not helping team
- Not wanting to go to Sacramento to rehab
- Delaying his activation until yesterday
- Re-Injuring himself?
- Losing it yesterday.
I'd be interested to hear what Brad Ziegler had to say about Milton Bradley's presence in Sacramento. I'm sure he wasn't happy about doing time there, and took it as a slap in the face... and the downward spiral started from that point.
by Colorado Fan on Jun 21, 2007 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions
I'm in your boat.
I think he was feeling sensitive about all the outfielders, rushed his rehab (even if Beane was delaying his return on purpose), didn't want to be in Sacto, felt "disrespected" in comparison to guys like Kotsay, Kielty, and especially Buck - Buck was the reason Beane felt he could trade Ethier in the first place, and now that he's on the team, contributing regularly, and proving himself constantly that he's ready for the big leagues, I think Milton felt he had to force the situation, and nobody forces any situation on Billy Beane! He's too savvy to let players push him around.
I see DJ and Bradley getting traded, a la T-Long and Ramon Hernandez not too long ago; a liability plus a sacrifice, let's see who we get.

Brad is way too discreet
to tell us anything juicy about Milton Bradley.
He's real open with friendly chatty stuff and what life is like as a baseball player -- and that's great to read -- but when has he ever dished dirt on anyone? Never that I remember. Whenever he's invited to, he politely dodges the question. He's just not that kind of guy.

I grew to like Bradley...
...I really did, but I don't mind this move at all. For all the talk of how well he plays and how well he was hitting... when does he really do this? It's not often enough to justify his presence on the roster, IMHO. If you're truly concerned with winning, at some point you have to put the best team on the field, and Bradley wasn't there often enough, and his entire history indicates that he probably never will be.
Well there's obviously something we don't know.
Which has taken it from a trade situation to a DFA situation. They're not really comparable.
Probably wise to follow the Brad Lidge rule:
No matter what, never trade away stuff that nasty.
Great

by A s Eh on Jun 21, 2007 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions
Since when are these things linear?
They're not. Individual circumstances.
But, in answer to what I believe is the intent of your question... should the A's get rid of Harden?... I wouldn't DFA him, but I'd seriously entertain trade offers, yes.
Harden still has serious potential trade value, partly just because he's a pitcher. Bradley I would think has some, but not as much as Harden would.
Well said.
A pitcher with Harden's skill set is a lot harder to find than a hitter with Bradley's skill set. Comparing the two is apples to oranges.
by IndianaAsfan on Jun 21, 2007 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions
Exactly my thinking
it's not a linear thing.
What applies to Bradley does not apply to Harden.
Either you do everything for the team, or you're out. So far, I see Harden saying he'd do anything, carry the ball buckets, etc. to help. Bradley, he must have been told to do something, struck out on purpose at Sacto, then bragged about it, whatever. Anyway, as Beane said when Jose Guillen made noise:
" I traded Mark McGwire. If Jose Guillen thinks he can (paraphrasing here>) posture and leverage his position by comments and action, he is very mistaken about who he is..."

good points
...but it was a rhetorical question
by Cutthemullet on Jun 21, 2007 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions
It's not about the roster spot
If the A's just wanted to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for their backup backup infielder Melillo, they could have moved Piazza or Street to the 60-day DL (neither will be back before 60 days are up), or traded/DFA's one of several fungible relievers (Marshall, Lewis, Lugo, even Calero at this point). Any one of those moves would make more sense than dumping an above-average starting position player - even one who is injury prone.
So clearly there's something else going on here, and sadly, the most likely scenario is some kind of clubhouse fight or meltdown.
Regardless, this is very disappointing, as Bradley has been one of my favorite players for the last two years.

We don't know that about Bradley
He may be hiding a serious injury.
Maybe his discussion was about what was intimated on the radio broadcast, that Bradley still did not look 100%. Perhaps Beane told him he had to get healthy and stay at Sacto until he did??
We just don't know.

Agree completely with andeux
This has nothing to do with a temporary roster crunch or Chavez' owies.
I don't really think it has too much to do with frustration over his injuries, either. Remember, last year was very much like this year: the first half of the season saw multiple trips to the DL, and Bradley didn't play that well when he did play. But after the all-star break he stayed healthy for months and was a damn big part of the A's second-half run and was pretty much our whole offense against Detroit in the ALCS. It's hard to be patient when a guy is repeatedly hurt week in and week out, but the A's are rational enough to know that there's a whooooole lotta season left, and no real reason to think Bradley couldn't have a long stretch of high production.
So I agree. Something must have happened... I wondered why he was on the A's bench the past few days rather than continuing to get at-bats in Sacto, when he so clearly hadn't got his timing back yet. I wonder if that plays into the story somehow.
I liked Milton as a player, and rooted hard for him to overcome his problems and succeed as a person, and it seemed from a number of interviews that he was clearly more capable of thoughtful reflection and self-criticism than most guys. So this situation makes me sad. Damn it.
it came down to resource management
Larry Davis had run out of Milton's blood type.

From the wiki
Once a player is designated for assignment, he may be traded. Some teams have been known to designate players for assignment to increase interest in the player, especially among teams that are not at the top of the list for waivers. For example, in May 2006, Rangers reliever Brian Shouse was designated for assignment, and was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers 4 days later. The Brewers could have waited until Shouse was placed on waivers so they would not have had to give up a player in a trade, but according to the waiver rules, the other 13 AL teams would have preference in claiming him.
I don't understand this. If you wanted to trade for a player, couldn't you do it directly without them having to pass waivers (pre July 31st obviously) ?
by green star oakland on Jun 21, 2007 10:33 AM PDT reply actions
Shouse
would have been available to all AL teams first, then NL teams in reverse order of the standings.
Understood,
if he had been put on waivers. But why couldn't the Brewers just have traded for him directly before he hit the waiver wire ? How did DFA-ing help ?
by green star oakland on Jun 21, 2007 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions
by effectively advertising a public sale
you increase competition. it may decrease value, but it's an educated guess on expected returns.
The DFA-ing might have
just been the Rangers need to open a spot on the 40-man roster. As others have said, it also means that if you have interest in the player, you better speak up now, or forever hold your peace.
Similar to what the Jays did with Hillenbrand last year, and ended up getting a good reliever from the Giants for him.
Which all basically means that if we want to get a good return for Bradley now that he has been DFA'd, we better hope Sabean is interested.
yeah
but not once a player has been designated for assignment and thus exposed to waiver claims made by intraleague teams with worse records than the team making the DFA decision

I understand that Melillo's up to be the new Scutaro of the middle infield only -- but if his arm's not good enough to play 3B, is it really adequate to back up at SS?
I'm thinking Ellis is on his way out via trade, perhaps packaged with Bradley.
I just semi-answered a ? about DFA rules...
now I ask one...can you add another player to a trade along with the one that has already been designated for assignment?
by Cutthemullet on Jun 21, 2007 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions
Ellis ?
Traded this season? I don't see that happening. I would be very surprised. The Bradley thing makes sense. We have a lot of outfield options. But Ellis saves many runs with his great glove. They would be foolish to trade him this season. We need every game to get that wildcard and to be johnny on the spot if the Halos falter.
No Way Ellis get Traded.
Ellis is the anti-Milton. Plus, he's one of the only guys who has never let Beane down.

by One won lost won on Jun 21, 2007 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions
really? seems like a rash decision.
it would have to be a f'n A trade for this season and the long term... and I can't even imagine what the deal would be or what hole it would fill.
Good luck to Milton
He furnished us with a lot of good memories..but let's face it ..his injury status and salary make him a liability. He will get picked up by another team I am sure. Thanks Gameboy.
so basically bradley's done in oakland?
from what the rules seem to say, he's either going to be traded, placed thru waivers, or released. if he somehow clears waivers (which seems very unlikely), we still can't take him back, right? dammit...something better be seriously screwed up (clubhouse issue, injury issue) or we have a pretty reasonable trade in place for us to dump milton like this.
If he clears waivers, he will be sent to the
minors.
by theblackpearl on Jun 21, 2007 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions
so there's a chance he stays an A?
maybe (i hope) billy somehow knows milton will clear waivers, needs more rehab time, and knows we need the roster spot with chavez possibly being injured? if reports had him limping during the game, he's clearly not 100% - which begs the question, why in god's name do we keep bringing him back up before he's healthy???
by guy incognito on Jun 21, 2007 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions
Reports on TV and radio
detected him limping. Said he didn't look 100%. Also said he was upset at having to go to Sacto instead of instant re-activation.
by One won lost won on Jun 21, 2007 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions
The being upset at
having to rehab points to the A's wanting to ensure he was 100%. It also says Milton felt he was 100%, and the A's were NOT rushing him back.
The fact that he was limping doesn't mean he wasn't 100% either. The guy is fragile.

Yes, with 5+ years in the bigs
but if he did refuse the assignment the team can still choose to keep him on the roster instead, I believe.

something tells me
that, even if he did clear waivers, Bradley isn't the type of guy to accept a minor league assignment, even grudgingly like Kielty.

sigh. no idea wtf just happened, but i don't like it. i had really come to like bradley. though, i wouldn't mind a trade (a real trade not a "i HAVE to trade this guy" trade). i just don't get it. i'm worried this is a pissing contest between player and GM and the GM has to win that one, so there it is. i don't like it, but i'm also being emotional about it.

no, can't deny it was short notice

giants, braves
who else??
there are some teams who could use an outfielder with some pop - problem is, they probably don't trust him to stay on the field either. just trade him to a team we won't play this year - i have a feeling he'd go wild and hit about 4 bombs and take out both crosby and ellis if we play against him this year.
i must say i am not that surprised here. milton had great talent but there was obviously some things brewing with his comments the last couple days and he must have gone over the edge of billy just said f it and pulled the trigger anyway.
STICK WITH YOUR PLAYERS
I don't know exactly what everyone has said about this move, sorry but I'm not going to read all 319 of everyone's entries, but I must say this does coem as a surprise, being that Bradley seemed very happy with the A's. Last year he got along great with former coach Gerald Perry and did not seem to cause havoc in the clubhouse either, unlike his last two stints with the Indians and Dodgers. It doesn't make much sense that the only player who hit well during the 2006 ALCS is no longer with the team. Bradley even had two homers in one of those games. What grinds my gears the most was the situation that they got him in. At the begining of the 2006 season the A's traded young prospect Andre Ethier to Los Angeles for Bradley. At first I was very upset with Billy for trading a jewel in the farm system for a player with lots of baggage. But I turned out to be wrong, as Bradley was able to put the baggage aside and have a decent 2006 season and even better postseason. Ethier has since become a stable force in the Dodger lineup, but hey a trades a trade and you have to give up a little to get a little.
But this was not the case, now Bradley's been designated for assignment and the player the A's got for promising Andre Ethier will soon be gone. I know of his injuries, but since when do you designate someone away because of injuries? If that were the case, Rich Harden, Mark Prior, and Kerry Wood would no longer be with their teams. Bradley was just coming off the DL to and had not chance to prove himself. This was a very foolish thing for the A's to do. When you trade a young promising player like Andre Ethier you could at least STICK WITH YOUR PLAYERS, especially when they are performing like Bradley had for the A's.

i REALLY liked having bradley on this team
and i'm sad to see him go but i highly doubt the A's released him just because of injuries. there HAS to be more to this story but we may never know everything.
