Around SBN: LeBron James Laughs In Kevin Garnett's Face

Open Thread: Game 53 - A's vs. Twins

The Minnesota Twins probably don't believe that Mark Kotsay was ever gone. Kotsay was racing around the bases hitting inside-the-park HRs the last time these two teams met, and he's in the lineup tonight.

The A's send Joe Kennedy to the mound, hoping Kennedy can bounce back from his first poor outing of the season when he was knocked around by the Orioles. His opponent is a guy named after Bengie Molina: Kevin Slowey, who will making his major league debut.

The lineups (featuring "The Killer C's" for Minnesota):

Castillo
Cerillo
Cuddyer
Morneau
Hunter
Redmond
Ford
Punto
Bartlett

Buck
Swisher
Bradley
Johnson
Chavez
Crosby
Kotsay
Scutaro
Kendall

the new baby or the knee? or both?

Geren hasn't gotten around yet to switching Chavez and Crosby in the lineup.

Cust

Bummed if Kotsay coming back means Cust becomes a  bench warmer. Cust has had a tough few weeks but still is near or at the top in a number of team offensive categories. While Kotsay may be a defensive plus, if it means Cust doesn't play anymore then in the long run it's a big offensive minus. Look at this way, what pitcher wouldn't rather face Kotsay than Cust?

by SA on Jun 1, 2007 7:04 PM PDT reply actions

He will be back.

Besides, it was Swish who displaced DJ who displaced Cust.

Watch out for Hunter

He's mashing lefties... Kennedy better keep the guys ahead of him off the bases.

I'm a huge A's fan serving in the Peace Corps in Honduras.  One of the things I've missed most since coming down here four months ago is watching A's game.  But I was channel-surfing today (I have cable TV, but no running water, go figure) and found this game being broadcast live on Fox Sports!  I am a very happy camper right now.

I'm really happy with the experience so far.  The Peace Corps is a big bureaucratic government organization with all the inherent drawbacks, but the bottom line is that they provide the volunteers with the opportunity to help a community and have a unique and life-changing experience.  If you're curious you can check out my blog at http://raph-in-honduras.blogspot.com or email me at raphael.crawfordmarks at gmail dot com.

Blame Pittsburgh

Back in 2001, the Pirates gave Kendall a stupidly over-generous seven-year contract.

We were willing to take on the last three years of the contract only because Pittsburgh agreed to pay some of it and we also unloaded a couple of overpaid players on our own roster.

In retrospect, it looks like even that was not worth it, but the bigger mistake was on Pittsburgh for giving him the contract in the first place.

Good decision to let Kendall bat. Why waste a pinch hitter and take Kendall out of the game at catcher when there's a 75% chance the inning will end with the pinch hitter? Kendall's play blocking balls in the dirt is a big reason we're still playing, btw.

With two out, you're likely going into extras, and the A's still get a chance in the bottom of the 10th with the top of the lineup, the defense isn'c compromised at home plate.

Game calling

I'm getting kind of skeptical about this "Kendall calls a good game," which the Twins announcer just said as what appears to now be the only rationale for playing Kendall. It's not the like A's pitchers have 17 pitches to choose from. Most of them have 3 pitches, maybe 4, and generally only 2 of them do they throw very well. I just think anyone who studies the hitters a little from video/scouting reports and is of average intelligence can call a game reasonably well. Besides, the pitcher always has the option of changing the call to the one he's most comfortable with and it's hardly traumatic if that happens once in a while.

I wonder if he could switch them

Have Calero hit and Kendall pitch, without much impact on the outcome.

looks like Calero's bite is back (unlike at the beginning of the season). It's just the location that he needs to locate now.

The A's have lost too many games like this

because of Calero.

he has one horrible outing then comes back with an ok outing. so the next time we trot him out there, he'll be ok.

what in the hell has happened to our boy Kiko Calero?

As much as I'm loathing Calero right now...

There's now reason for this game to be in the 10th inning.  Way too many missed opportunities with runners on earlier in the game....again.

When did Benitez become an Oakland A?

Calero has been horrendous this year! Though you can't blame it on him alone. The A's should have scored much more than 1 tonite. I've never seen a batter get soo many belt high fastballs and miss all of them! Damn you Chavvy!

Take my love, take my land/ Take me where I cannot stand/I don't care, I'm still free/You can't take the A's from me!

light bright

I know this isn't looking the way that we want it to, but there is a lot of positive.

This team just looks so much better tonight. Bradley BELONGS in right, Buck BELONGS in left, Swish BELONGS at 1st and Kots, of course, belongs in center.

Goes to show what the team could look like when healthy.

I like it.

Sure, we still stink at RISP, our bullpen is still on a crisis medivac flight to John Muir cause Oakland and Richmond can't field the hospitals it needs to go with its shootings, but hey, maybe we'll still get lucky and have the team we hoped for by July.

Excuse me

It was many years ago that I grew up a few blocks from the hospital and the helicopters and the shootings in the papers.

Didn't mean it to be a hateful thing I said. Just trying to make a joke about our bullpen and not thinking about the landscape and the stereotypes as they exist now.

Forgive me.

On the other hand, god gifted me a family that is very hateful and racist and prides itself on its ridiculous jokes and some of it, to my disdain, has to have rubbed off on me. I fight it as best I can. But tonight, I have been drinking, and I was in a mood.

Forgive me.

And, thanks. We all need to be called on our embarrassing racist statements from time to time and I sincerely appreciate it. I'll fight harder.

Sorry. Thank you.

Here is the story of this game...

The A's and Twins lineups suck ass.  The A's should be hitting a rookie softball pitcher and the Twins sure as heck should be hitting a softball bullpen pitcher.  The Twins have actually left more runners on base.

Being that neither team can hit... it all comes down to a bullpen and lord knows we don't have it.  Not sure we'd even have it with Duke and Street back.

Well at least we can't blame the loss on

Joe Kennedy............he pitched great tonite despite the 4 walks. But I'm still fuc*#@g frustrated as all hell.

How about a trade for a guy that can get a base hit with guys in scoring position???????????

by mrod on Jun 1, 2007 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Crosby has been a huge disappointment.

He came up to the plate and I knew that he was going to strike out on some outside slider.  Why oh why Billy did you let Tejada go? The tiny silver lining of this loss is Nathan threw a lot of pitches and maybe we won't see him tomorrow.

by pedoman on Jun 1, 2007 10:31 PM PDT reply actions

Kennedy is becoming a sick joke...

it is ridiculous that he hasn't been given any run support. Its as if he pitches just bad enough to lose. They should take him out of the rotation just because he is cursed!

another good start wasted

we gave away a run to the twins, failed to score several times with runners in scoring position, failed to leverage any momentum from Kotsay coming back.

by oak1 on Jun 1, 2007 10:33 PM PDT reply actions

again, it's back to the injuries

No Duke, no Street.  If they are around one of them pitches that 10th and we win in the bottom half.

When is Street due back, 2009?  I swear this team is so defensive and secretive about injuries you need a security clearance above the Cigarette Smoking Man to get the scoop on what's going on.  Larry Davis is the Soviet Union of sports trainers.

is much better than what we're throwing out there right now from the bullpen. Calero really sucks and should not be trusted in a pressure situation again until he shows more consistency with his pitches.

our bullpen is a shambles at the moment...

but we still have to take advantage of opportunities to score when thay are presented. leaving the bases loaded has become like fucking groundhog day with this team and it is very tired.......sorry for my foul language but the A's hitting with RISP is most offensive.....just sick to my stomach again..........g'nite all-mrod
