Open Thread: Game 53 - A's vs. Twins
The Minnesota Twins probably don't believe that Mark Kotsay was ever gone. Kotsay was racing around the bases hitting inside-the-park HRs the last time these two teams met, and he's in the lineup tonight.
The A's send Joe Kennedy to the mound, hoping Kennedy can bounce back from his first poor outing of the season when he was knocked around by the Orioles. His opponent is a guy named after Bengie Molina: Kevin Slowey, who will making his major league debut.
The lineups (featuring "The Killer C's" for Minnesota):
Castillo
Cerillo
Cuddyer
Morneau
Hunter
Redmond
Ford
Punto
Bartlett
Buck
Swisher
Bradley
Johnson
Chavez
Crosby
Kotsay
Scutaro
Kendall

Ellis again not in there
the new baby or the knee? or both?
Geren hasn't gotten around yet to switching Chavez and Crosby in the lineup.
Cust
Bummed if Kotsay coming back means Cust becomes a bench warmer. Cust has had a tough few weeks but still is near or at the top in a number of team offensive categories. While Kotsay may be a defensive plus, if it means Cust doesn't play anymore then in the long run it's a big offensive minus. Look at this way, what pitcher wouldn't rather face Kotsay than Cust?
He will be back.
Besides, it was Swish who displaced DJ who displaced Cust.

My first A's game in Honduras
I'm a huge A's fan serving in the Peace Corps in Honduras. One of the things I've missed most since coming down here four months ago is watching A's game. But I was channel-surfing today (I have cable TV, but no running water, go figure) and found this game being broadcast live on Fox Sports! I am a very happy camper right now.
That's awesome!
Welcome!
oh wow!
I hope to join the Peace Corps someday. how is everything going for you so far? that's great about the game!
I recommend it
I'm really happy with the experience so far. The Peace Corps is a big bureaucratic government organization with all the inherent drawbacks, but the bottom line is that they provide the volunteers with the opportunity to help a community and have a unique and life-changing experience. If you're curious you can check out my blog at http://raph-in-honduras.blogspot.com or email me at raphael.crawfordmarks at gmail dot com.
Kendall...UGH!!!
Can someone please explain to me how Kendall makes 13 million dollars a year. If you haven't seen it you should check out Yahoo sports today where jason Kendall got rated at the most overpaid player in baseball.....you don't have to tell us we live it!!!
You cannot place a price tag on...
GRIT.
Blame Pittsburgh
Back in 2001, the Pirates gave Kendall a stupidly over-generous seven-year contract.
We were willing to take on the last three years of the contract only because Pittsburgh agreed to pay some of it and we also unloaded a couple of overpaid players on our own roster.
In retrospect, it looks like even that was not worth it, but the bigger mistake was on Pittsburgh for giving him the contract in the first place.
Thats wonderful...
two botched pickoff throws. That's a record. Meanwhile, Kennedy has been 2-0 to nearly every batter...
I'll bet THEY can score from third. :(
Sadly you are correct.
Chavy, you taking notes?!
Oh no...
Swish has been injured...
Oh dear god NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
NOT LARRY DAVIS

Is there a cap on the number of Larry Davis' visits in one half inning?
Against the rules....Twins..Cheaters...
I thought it was against the rules to score a run with runners in scoring position....I guess that rule only aplies if you are wearing green and gold...
In case you don't have TV today
replays looked like Swish kinda jammed his ankle on the pickoff throw that Kennedy threw in the dirt. Didn't look too awful.

Good decision to let Kendall bat. Why waste a pinch hitter and take Kendall out of the game at catcher when there's a 75% chance the inning will end with the pinch hitter? Kendall's play blocking balls in the dirt is a big reason we're still playing, btw.
I agree with you....
I think Kendall is one of the worst players in the whole entire league, but I would let him hit there. THey weren't going to win it that inning.
HOWEVER... we maybe should've taken our chances to win because Calero is no good.

If scutaro gets on, there's only one out and someone pinch-hits.
With two out, you're likely going into extras, and the A's still get a chance in the bottom of the 10th with the top of the lineup, the defense isn'c compromised at home plate.

Game calling
I'm getting kind of skeptical about this "Kendall calls a good game," which the Twins announcer just said as what appears to now be the only rationale for playing Kendall. It's not the like A's pitchers have 17 pitches to choose from. Most of them have 3 pitches, maybe 4, and generally only 2 of them do they throw very well. I just think anyone who studies the hitters a little from video/scouting reports and is of average intelligence can call a game reasonably well. Besides, the pitcher always has the option of changing the call to the one he's most comfortable with and it's hardly traumatic if that happens once in a while.
Sigh.
if we get out this, the next time

Here is the story of this game...
The A's and Twins lineups suck ass. The A's should be hitting a rookie softball pitcher and the Twins sure as heck should be hitting a softball bullpen pitcher. The Twins have actually left more runners on base.
Being that neither team can hit... it all comes down to a bullpen and lord knows we don't have it. Not sure we'd even have it with Duke and Street back.

Who didn't see that coming.
Stupid, stupid Calero
The 1st inning just killed us tonight....again we
get no hits with runners on base....UGH....There is an A in Frustrated!!!!!!
Calero sucks, the offense sucks
i cant believe we just got beat by Jeff Cirillo. yuck.

It's been A's baseball once again
Teasing us with offense at the end of a close game. That last strikeout was just on BBTN. Probably the only highlight from this game.
Well at least we can't blame the loss on
Joe Kennedy............he pitched great tonite despite the 4 walks. But I'm still fuc*#@g frustrated as all hell.
How about a trade for a guy that can get a base hit with guys in scoring position???????????
Crosby has been a huge disappointment.
He came up to the plate and I knew that he was going to strike out on some outside slider. Why oh why Billy did you let Tejada go? The tiny silver lining of this loss is Nathan threw a lot of pitches and maybe we won't see him tomorrow.
Kennedy is becoming a sick joke...
it is ridiculous that he hasn't been given any run support. Its as if he pitches just bad enough to lose. They should take him out of the rotation just because he is cursed!
LMAO!!! Maybe we should put Rich Gannon in to PH
In a critical situation....

Ha Ha...Okay maybe we should have Gruden as a
Bench coach...LOL!!

another good start wasted
we gave away a run to the twins, failed to score several times with runners in scoring position, failed to leverage any momentum from Kotsay coming back.

again, it's back to the injuries
No Duke, no Street. If they are around one of them pitches that 10th and we win in the bottom half.
When is Street due back, 2009? I swear this team is so defensive and secretive about injuries you need a security clearance above the Cigarette Smoking Man to get the scoop on what's going on. Larry Davis is the Soviet Union of sports trainers.
an injured Duke
is much better than what we're throwing out there right now from the bullpen. Calero really sucks and should not be trusted in a pressure situation again until he shows more consistency with his pitches.

no doubt
our bullpen is a shambles at the moment...
but we still have to take advantage of opportunities to score when thay are presented. leaving the bases loaded has become like fucking groundhog day with this team and it is very tired.......sorry for my foul language but the A's hitting with RISP is most offensive.....just sick to my stomach again..........g'nite all-mrod
You said it all, man...

I concur
Isn't it june yet? Can we get clearance from a Tennessee Titan doctor yet?
by oaklandSMASH on Jun 1, 2007 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions
So we now have 2 guys in the bullpen who are just
wasting a roster spot...Witasik and Calero...I have no answers but Id sure like to hear some....
