Clutch And Clutcher

For at least one night, two RISP whipping boys restored their good names. Eric Chavez must be automatic, because no one seems to associate him with the clutch, but his single to left-center brought the A's even in the 7th. In the 9th it was Nick Swisher, owner of a career .205 average with RISP (just .190 a year ago) who came through. Swisher's 3-run HR put the A's over the hump, as Oakland finished the night just 2/14 with RISP--just good enough to win.

Meanwhile, Chris Snelling made a fine debut with a line drive single, a walk, and two long fly outs. He didn't have a bad at bat. And Jack Cust did what he does best--see a lot of pitches. Presumably, Cust will actually play tomorrow.

Also, props to Bob Geren for two excellent decisions. One was letting Duchscherer pitch the 8th "as if the A's had the lead," gambling that the A's could score in the 9th and make it retroactively so. With the Devil Rays' bullpen, it's a good gamble. The other was having Duchscherer pitch to Dukes and Wiggington, but walk Crawford intentionally. Dukes and Wiggington have holes and Duchscherer exploited them; Crawford is a guy you can make the "out pitch" to and he can still beat you.

How about just props to the A's in general? Half your team on the DL? The better half? No problem. All I hoped for from this team right now was a .500 record, and so far so good.

Swisher's Shot was Awesome

He was swinging for the fences the whole at bat. Where a single would have put the A's in the lead, he wanted nothing but to make up for Chavy's near-home run and just flat-out nailed it. I'm glad we have the real Swish back. It doesn't matter if your team puts up 20 hits a game... all you have to do is outscore your opponent, and the A's did it tonight.

But when it came to doing the home run trot, he looked fine to me. I also don't believe there was a post-HR celebration. His cuts didn't look to be half-ass either. He was using his whole ass.

True that is the best infield defense

However, at the risk of getting roasted, I want to note that DJ has been hitting better since he came up, especially in the Boston series - so, I'll take him - usually he doesn't make so many defensive gaffes .. and Crosby's bad throw wasn't his fault ..

So maybe he should be DH?

Once Swish can do the splits, maybe DJ goes to DH, Swish goes to 1B, and the OF looks like Stewart/Snelling/Buck or some variety thereof...

errors in today's game

Crosby continues to make routine throws to first
look terribly difficult bouncing them in the
dirt or just pulling the first baseman off the
bag. Is he ever going to play reliable defense?

DJ had a more difficult play; the ball had a lot
of spin on it but I agree -- Swish is probably the

options are limited

we're clearly stuck with Crosby for this year
at the very least. The A's made the decision
to stick with Crosby long-term (and consequently there is a lack of depth in the organisation at SS).
What's frustrating is that the organisation sees
potential in Crosby and he provides a glimpse of
it once in a while but doesnt adapt quickly enough
and continues to make rookie mistakes. Hopefully
for the A's he'll come around and at the very
least be a league average SS.

I think Scoot should be playing a lot more though.

Are you saying this is a lock,

no trade for the duration of his contract?  Don't recall til when he is signed.

by LilAnnieOaktown on May 4, 2007 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions

no...

but the a's handcuffed themselves with investing
long-term in Crosby. There's little depth in the
organisation and i'm not sure even Billy can
pull off a trade to get someone better at SS.

We're just going to have to keep our fingers
crossed that Crosby comes around sooner rather
than later.

by oak1 on May 4, 2007 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Until they have a better option

Unfortunately, the answer is not in our organization.  The closest thing we have to a legitimate SS prospect is in A ball, and Pennington is far from a sure thing.  Petit can play defense, but it is hard to see him hitting enough to be an everyday player.

I'd like to eat my lunch, but Billy just kicked me out of my office.

risp, here's the problem
with your "rusty" theory. These are Crosby's batting averages and on base percentages for each month he has played, going backwards by month:

April 2007: .     215/.244
August 2006: .231/.333
July 2006:       .160/.261
June 2006:     .241/.337 (slugged .277)
May 2006:       .276/.312
April 2006:      .215/.261
Sept 2005       .160/.222
August 2005:  .268/.333
July 2005:        .252/.333

And that gets us back to June, 2005--the one month Bobby Crosby really hit well so far this career.

Problem is, Croz hasn't even
hit as high as .251 in 6 of his last 7 months (and the one where he did was hardly a spectular month). Nor is Crosby hitting for any meaningful power. Or walking. Or making productive outs. Or really looking any better than he looked two years ago.

I do recall that his first two seasons, Tejada exasperated me more than a few times. But honestly, what odds would you give Crosby to become as good as Tejada? I'm guessing even you (defending Crosby) don't believe there's any real chance that despite the "first two seasons" similiarities the two will have comparable careers. Do you, honestly?

by Nico on May 4, 2007 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Everybody knew Tejada was rushed

The A's started 1998 with Kurt Abbott as their starting shortstop and that was a total disaster.  Between using a utility-infielder type and going with the young prospect, they chose the young guy, knowing that he wasn't going to be successful immediately but also realizing that they weren't contending that year, so they could afford to give a young player some experience.  That decision paid off well in the long run.  Very similar to what the Mariners have done in late 2005 and 2006 with Betancourt; he's now a significant contributor in their lineup.

I'm with Nico on this; I don't see the upside with Crosby that I saw with Tejada, or that I see with Yuni.

Have a lot to do with a players confidence. Do you remember at fan fest this year when the asshole of a fan stood up and told Bro Crow it was time to step up. You could tell Bobby was insulted, but he took it like a man. I know honesty when I see it. Bobby has been hurting the last 2 seasons, and has caught some bad breaks here and there. Rookie of the year followed by really bad luck. I hate to say I told you so  in a couple months, but look for lady luck to swing his way again real soon.

What bullshit

First off, Tejada played 159 games in 1999 and has been one of the most durable players in the majors. It took two seasons for Crosby to play that many games.

But more importantly, Tejada was 23 when he put up his '99 numbers for Oakland. Crosby was in AAA when he was 23.

If you look at their age related performances you see that Tejada has dominated at every comparison. If you look at the total body of their work the only way you could possibly compare Crosby to Tejada would be to say they both played SS for the Oakland Athletics.

Let me get this straight.

Because Tejada swung badly at outside pitches, Crosby will put up similar numbers as he did?  What's that got to do with anything?  Tejada put up solid numbers, while durable, while younger than Crosby ever did at similar points in their careers.  Crosby continues to suck because he's injured often and extremely pigheaded.  Tejada had issues only because he was a little overzealous and played with a lot of emotion.  There's nothing comparable about them at all.  What knowledge of the DR and Miggy starting young has anything whatsoever about Crosby's suckatude, I don't think anyone but you knows.

If you've actually seen Tejada play

than you'd realize that Miguel Tejada had/has better physical tools than Bobby Crosby. Scouts thought that Tejada had the natural talent to become a superstar in the pros and if you think he didn't reach those heights than he came awfully close. Crosby was never projected to be a star, a good player (maybe even a very good player) but a notch below Tejada's class. But that's scouting, let's focus on actual performance.

Here's the irony.

You're predicting Crosby at age 27 to have a season as good as Tejada did when he was 27. When Tejada hit .278 with 27 HR in 2003 it was considered something of a down year for him. If Crosby should manage your prediction it would be head and shoulders better than anything he's ever done in the big leagues.

If that reality alone isn't enough to show the level of seperation between these two players, then I don't know what will.

If you wish to continue, kick up your game a couple notches. Then Reply.

Yep. Warm and fuzzy... that's me.

Captain Clutch

In a game where the Yankees scored 11, Captain Jeter with his 20-game winning streak went 0-6, the sixth one being a walk-off ground-out in the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded and Jeter representing the tying run.

Sweet.

I just continue to be amazed
at the lack of quality in most of Crosby's ABs. Big swing, poor pitch selection no matter what the situation. I honestly believe that if I had AAA stuff that I could get him out consistently because he's so easy to set up. This approach has been working since high school? That doesn't even work in high school.

Considering that you are
3rd on the A's SS depth chart and I'm 4th, I'd prefer Crosby to be good and make me wrong. But when people say "hope he comes around sooner rather than later," I can't help but think, "How about never?" Because I just don't see a very good major league baseball player. A talented one, but David Eckstein is twice the player with half the talent.

Not only is it a frequent occurrence but it is becoming a habit. There has got to be a point at which the trainers have to take Rich's regiment into their own hands for the sake of the business. I just think its unacceptable to have the team's greatest asset mishandled as many times as he has. And they still don't know what the f*** is wrong with him.

small ball

props to geren? can't do it.

too many times when we've got someone on with no out and the sacrifice is not put on. what happens next? double play or strike out. it's time to play small ball. especially with no runs being scored. tonights 3 run homer is not gonna work all the time. with all the injuries, the percentages are not gonna work.

by rickmonday on May 4, 2007 10:54 PM PDT reply actions

Geren has played small ball at almost all the

right times in my estimation. If you are talking about Buck's double play, you have to think about who is batting behind Buck.  If it was anyone else but Kendall, I say bunt, but with Jason up, I prefer to let Travis attempt to drive in the run.

by theblackpearl on May 4, 2007 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions

small ball?

not talking about that time. but... when your best pitcher has allowed only 2 runs and your hitters are horribly absent, why not make something happen. and with someone on second and nobody out, you gotta sac. even if you don't sac, just act like you want to get the run in. the walk and home run thing doesn't work in the playoffs. haven't we figured that out yet?

by rickmonday on May 5, 2007 12:04 AM PDT up reply actions

So if I'm understanding correctly,
it's not that Geren should have bunted any particular time he didn't, it's that he failed to get the team to act like they wanted to score runs. FIRE THE DRAMA COACH NOW!!!

I actually think letting Buck swing away was the right move in the 8th (I think hitting the first pitch right to the 2Bman wasn't). Remember an inning earlier, Ellis tried to bunt for a hit to load the bases for Chavy with one out--that's as small ball as it gets considering you're going for a single that can't even drive in the run. But it was smart, and happened also to be foul.

Personally, I think Geren's decisions on when to bunt and when not to have been nearly perfect. I'd characterize it as one of his strengths as an in-game tactician.

Amazing that this team stays afloat

This has got to be Billy Beane's best year yet.  To have the amount of depth to go .500 with your best players either struggling or hurt has been astounding to say the least.  Not to mention we don't exactly have the payroll to afford high priced bench talent and numerous ratings systems rate our farm talent as below average.  It seems like the trades he's made over the last two years have really made a difference to at least improve our ability to compete, even despite the freakish amounts of injuries we've had the last few years.  We've also had a few under-the-radar free agent signings (most notable, Todd Walker) that have proved useful in this crazy April/May.

Also, the Yanks fired their strength coach

Why can't we do the same?  Something is seriously wrong with the offseason training regimen if we can't even get guys through April without getting hurt.  Not to mention voodoo doctor Larry Davis is about as clueless as any athletic trainer I've seen.
