Win The Series, Win The War
We got out-pitched today. We also got out-hit 11-2. That might not be the combination to a winning game. Tip your hat to Morris, leave the weekend with a series win, and start again tomorrow. The A's don't need to win every game; just series after series, and they certainly won this one. Eventually the Angels will lose, and we can begin to make up some ground. Our starting pitching is still getting the job done, we hope for our offense to be just good enough, and we hope someday to have someone to pitch the ninth. I don't ask for much.
In other news, what on earth did we do to the Dodgers? They were a big, fat help to our cause this weekend.
Tomorrow starts another series as we fly to Chicago to take on the White Sox. Game time tomorrow is at 5:11.

just returned from the game
Morris pitched quite a game. He also got all of the close calls on his curveball on both sides of the plate.
Kennedy didn't look sharp at all...the Giants probably should have gotten more runs.
Gametime 7:11 CST (Thanks Sponsors!)
Today's game was a drag. A's never got anything going, and the highlight was Buck's triple. The home tagout with DiNardo was alright as well, but not highlight material. We should have saved some of the runs from Friday for today, but it's hard to plan ahead like that. 2 of 3 I'll take any day.
I had the munchies really bad
so I cruised down to the 5-11 for a $71,429 Thousand Dollar Bar, washed down with a 5-Up. It was awesome.

You missed a few decimals...
Did you know that $71,428.57 dollar bar you bought keeps going?
71,428.571428571428571428571428571428571428571428571428571428571428571428571428571428571428571428571 4285714285714285714285714285.
Good stuff. That way if you're converting fractions to decimals on sevenths, you pick three numbers in a row and you're good to go.
From the "714285" game:
1/7: .142857
2/7: .285714
3/7: .428571
4/7: .571428
5/7: .714285
6/7: .857142

it happens
sometimes you are just going to face a pitcher that is on and has all of his stuff working. Not much you can do about that when it happens.

Except that
The A's seem to make an awful lot of Odalis Perezes look like Johan Santana. No disrespect to Mr. Morris.

Note to fans in left field
With the conclusion of this homestand, it seems like a good time to take that KENDALL banner that is tied to the railing above the out-of-town scoreboard, fold it up and bury it next to the FEAR MECIR banner. Frankly, its presence is getting embarrassing.
How about:
and a map of Sacramento.
Oh my
That is great!

Seriously
I am making a "Put Melhuse In" sign for next time. He looked liked he was pissed today too. He kept running to the clubhouse and sitting all by himself when he'd return.
I've also noticed that Kendall gets an out and Melhuse goes down to play catch until Kendall suits up, he hits him harder than when he actually gets on base. Maybe he has a little resuidual payback in mind. Just a thought.
by mlleaimee on May 20, 2007 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Day game after a night game and ..
.. Melhuse wasn't in there - I was surprised by that - Adam can't possibly do worse than Kendall offensively. Granted, maybe Adam doesn't make that play on the wild pitch from DiNardo, but today we needed all the offense we could get (which amounted to "not much") ..

Really!
I was shocked that they pinch hit for Boccachica but not for Kendall. He is literally killing us slowly.

I will venture to disagree
The folks with the KENDALL banner paid for it, (apparently) bought season tickets, and are willing to get to the park for every game early enough to claim that spot. In my book, that makes them perfectly entitled to retain their good opinion of and affections for a player, even if it is unfashionable and/or completely unsupported by current evidence.
But then, I like Jason Kendall....and the left field bleachers.
Feel free to make and hang your own banner, though, as long as it conforms to the banner rules.

Kendall
Is a suck. Everyone is of course entitled to their opinion however misguided they may be. My dad likes Kendall too but of course he likes the Yankees. No accounting for taste. "He has a lifetime .300". I don't care. If he took a day off every, heck, 5th day, he'd probably hit better and could, just possibly get a runner out at 2cd. Maybe I'm dreaming.
by mlleaimee on May 20, 2007 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions
It wouldn't be so glaring/embarrassing...
if it weren't the biggest, most legible (and, some nights, ONLY) sign out there. If I had a more puntastic imagination and didn't think the game view from bleacher seats bites, I'd make & bring a bunch of signs myself.
You can still bring a sign
I haven't brought my "Let the Wookie Win" for Haren yet this year.
by mlleaimee on May 20, 2007 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm not clever enough...
and I think signs with just a player's name are boring. I really like "Kotsay's Korner: Featuring Nick Swisher" (or Milton Bradley, earlier) that I've seen a couple of times this year. "Upper Cust" in RF is also cute.
I love
Kotsay's Korner featuring "whoever". The outfield seems so empty without it. It wasn't there today either but that damn Kendall sign was there.

glad you "got it"
Heck, at this point
Baseballgirl, you hit on exactly why I was irritated today. It wasn't the A's--the A's played one lousy game and won a series, and Morris really did pitch well. What irritated me was that the Dodgers couldn't win a game against the (granted hot) Angels. I thought you were a first place team, LAD. Sheesh.
I don't like being 4 games out, but as long as the A's stay at or above .500 I think they're doing everything they can right now.
Bradley ..
.. We need Mr. Glass back in the lineup .. hopefully in the Chicago series .. and let's keep our fingers crossed that the Angels don't bury us before we can get healthy - unfortunately if they keep winning 10 of 12, they will certainly do just that .. this last couple weeks has seemed like September of 2005 to me - when I kept hoping the Angels would slow down, and they kept scoring runs like crazy! What happened to the so-called, thought-to-be 'anemic' Angels offense? ...
by Randy Bell on May 20, 2007 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions
Angels and Connect Four
Angels will slow down. They're going to get tired. Seatlle might heat up though.
I was hoping that Bradley would come in and pinch hit for Kendall but alas, yet another out.
by mlleaimee on May 20, 2007 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions
I'd Rather Seattle get it than LAA ..
.. and for gosh sakes, right now Sea/Tex have a combined 2-11 record against LAA .. good grief! :( There has to be more competitive balance in the West before it's all over, or we won't have a chance .. I do hope you're right that LAA will cool off ..

Don't have the passion to win. They will slow down but I really think its going to be a race til the end.

Matt Morris
Morris played one hell of a game today. I was impressed.
The ump had an everchanging strike zone. It was a nightmare.
by mlleaimee on May 20, 2007 6:58 PM PDT reply actions
People seem to forget that Morris has a 22 win
season under his belt, and a couple of more over 15. He is to Giants, as Loaiza is to the A's, a very competent veteran pitcher, who can throw a great game from time to time.
I actually like Matt Morris
I kind of knew he was going to get the win today. Kennedy is too shaky right now but he will only improve. I wish Loaiza stayed as healthy as Morris!
by mlleaimee on May 20, 2007 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions
Actually, I was bummed when
Given how well ELo pitched last June-Oct and how poorly Morris pitched last season, it's kind of a wash at this point--but I think Morris is the far better pitcher and teammate, all things being equal.
Wow
I don't know much about Morris' backstory. I like him even more now.
I thought that when ELo came in last year, before even pitching, he said he was expecting to lose a couple games before getting on track. You go into a game thinking you're going to lose? (Maybe that's what happened to Zito on Friday.) But ELo has won me over a bit. I think that he's going to have a decent season when he actually gets to.

actually, in 2005 Loaiza
pitched well for the Nationals. He then became a free agent. As I recall the A's won a bidding war against the Giants.
You don't give a three-year contract to someone who is a problem.
Also, after his career year with the White Sox the Yankees were hot to get him. the White Sox took Jose Contreras and cash for Loaiza, which was a good deal.
Again, that doesn't reflect poorly on Loaiza.
I've seen nothing negative about Loaiza
in the A's clubhouse. The only real problem is that Loaiza hasn't been healthy during his time with the A's -- something not really predictable based on his career.
I wasn't particularly excited when Beane signed him. But neither do I think there's reason to think he's a negative factor in the clubhouse.
I think
He showed his colors when Bradley dropped a hot coffee on him and he didn't react. He just got up, went to the clubhouse and got a new shirt.

I think ELo, like Bradley, gets a bad rep, probably warrented, but they get to Oakland and they are able to chill out a bit and enjoy the game a bit and enjoy their teammates. Jack Cust is not verbacious, perhaps he too is aloof and his recent run of luck has made us blind to that.
