4/24/07 DLD: Macha Update!
Happy Tuesday, AN!
The A's win a nail-biting, pepto-bismol-drinking, throw-up-a-little-from-all-the-stress game last night!
"That was a fun inning," said Street, who called the decision to pitch to Tejada, a right-handed hitter, over lefty Markakis "a no-brainer."
Thank you, Miggy, for swinging at that first pitch and grounding out to end that gave-me-an-ulcer inning!

If you didn't notice, we had two new faces, Dallas Braden and Danny Putnam, in the dugout last night because Harden and Bradley are back on the DL! Putnam had his major league debut last night and got his first major league hit and Braden will get his major league debut in a few hours! Let's hope he can continue this string of excellent starting pitching by the A's!
Here's some info on Braden (link):
Braden was a 24th-round pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, out of Stagg High in Stockton, Calif., and was named the A's Organization Pitcher of the Year in 2005 after going a combined 15-5 with a 3.52 ERA in 23 starts at Class A Stockton and Double-A Midland. He was limited by shoulder issues to 10 appearances in 2006. Fully recovered, he was a non-roster invitee to Spring Training this year. After starting this season at Midland, where he went 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two starts (12 innings, three runs, five hits, three walks, 13 strikeouts), Braden was promoted to Triple-A Sacramento and made one start there before getting the call to fly to Baltimore.
Since Harden is back on the disabled list AGAIN, there are talks about whether it would be better for Rich to be a closer.
The A's haven't reached that point yet, according to general manager Billy Beane."First, we want to make sure he's healthy and ready to go," Beane said. "We'd be disappointed (to convert Harden to relief) because he's such a great talent and he has the ability to be one of the best starters in the game.
And Rich's thoughts?
Harden had heard such talk, but, he said, "I don't think about that. I'm a starter."
And has anybody been wondering what the Athletics' ex-manager is up to??
Ken Macha has joined the pre- and postgame crew on NESN's coverage of Red Sox games.
Macha will be one of four rotating analysts on what Oakland A's radio host Marty Lurie calls the hardest-hitting studio show in all of baseball. The others are all former Red Sox: Jim Rice, Dennis Eckersley and Dave McCarty.

Haha. Seriously?!
Anyway, GO A's and GO BRADEN!!

Note to McFood/Sal: always check, it's easy
Everyone on the team is injured, true, but the bright side is that none of them have been comically murdered by their wives:
At exactly 5:45:34 on April 18, 2004 a computer taken from the office of the attorney of Melanie McGuire, did a search on the words "How To Commit Murder."
That same day searches on Google and MSN search engines, were conducted on such topics as `instant poisons,` `undetectable poisons,' 'fatal digoxin doses,' and gun laws in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Ten days later, according to allegations by the state of New Jersey, McGuire murdered her husband, William T. McGuire, at their Woodbridge apartment, using a gun obtained in Pennsylvania, one day after obtaining a prescription for a sedative known as the "date rape" drug.
The A's took an early 5-0 lead over the Orioles behind Dan Haren and cruised the rest of the way for a refreshingly easy victory. Or so I remember. Congratulations to Danny Putnam and his family (who apparently are unclear on the rules of baseball) on "DP's" first hit. All of the unsightly crimson residue appears to have been washed off, which bodes well.
Injuries:
Harden: To the DL, not clear what his status is.
Bradley: DL
Buck: A pair of bum wrists kept him out of the lineup.
Putnam, 24, started in right field because Buck has a sore right wrist to go with the sore left wrist that has bothered him since the beginning of the season.
Buck is unsure how he hurt his right wrist, but he believes it's either the result of overcompensating for the left side or it's from diving for a ball in the eighth inning of Saturday night's game at Texas.
"I've got two of 'em," Buck said. "The right side is a lot worse than the left. ... I definitely felt it the whole game (Sunday)."
Buck was hopeful that taking Monday off would resolve the problem but he's prepared to play through it if necessary.
While I was watching the game last night, it was actually refreshing to not worry about players getting injured, since most of the team is already injured.
Kielty: calf strain
Members of the presumptive starting lineup opening spring training who have shown full health:
Jason Kendall
Shannon Stewart

Hardest hitting studio show
Maybe because Macha has a black belt. Because he sure as heck never said anything interesting as A's coach and rarely argued with the fat men in blue.

I took hard hitting to mean offensively bad.

I think it was a typo.
There's an 's' in there somewhere.

hearing Eck on NESN is weird
when he says "we" now, he means the Sox

Yeah
I find it mildly disturbing.
Ken Macha, on the other hand, well he can go right on ahead with that.

Rehabs and other minor league news
Dan Johnson had a single and two walks in 4 plate appearances in his first rehab start at Sacramento. Kurt Suzuki homered, and is currently hitting .327/.409/.455.
Not as good news for Dan Meyer, making a rehab start at Midland. Meyer gave up 3 runs in his first two innings, then settled down to pitch two more innings without giving up another run. The 'Hounds pulled out the win on a Jeff Baisley homer in the ninth. Baisley is also off to a great start, with a line of .352/.400/.630 after 14 games.
And at Kane County, Craig Italiano, making his second start of the year after having surgery last year, was lit up for 4 runs in 2/3 of an inning.

want to meet travis buck?
On Saturday, April 28th, after the A's host the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at 1:05pm, A's fans can meet A's outfielder Travis Buck at The Oakland Airport Hilton. Travis will sign autographs and take photos with fans one hour following the game at The Oakland Airport Hilton, located at One Hegenberger Road in Oakland. Don't miss this exciting opportunity with the A's!

That Hilton always has good stuff.
When I stayed there last year for opening day, they were holding the open tryouts for the Oakland Raiders cheerleaders.
I have to say, some girls have a WAY higher opinion of their talents than they should.

Haha
Speaking of Baek, I've never seen a pitcher who looks so absolutely terrified in my entire life. It's not so much the body language as it is the facial expression; Baek legitimately looks like a man who's in the early stages of being delivered the worst news in the history of the world. Observe:
>
Contrast this with Kevin Millwood, who appears to display nothing but bitter contempt for everyone around him when he pitches. I wonder if it might not be part of why Baek succeeds - when the batter goes up to the plate, he sees Baek looking like spooked cattle and assumes that something horrible is about to happen. Fearing for both his own safety and for the welfare of his family back home, the batter is no longer able to concentrate on the pitch, and he pops it up quickly so he can return to the dugout and call his wife.

Baek to the Future
It may be an effective look from the same playbook as Troy Percival (when he was good). With his awful vision, and without glasses or contacts, Percival would squint in for the sign as though he couldn't even tell the catcher from the umpire, much less find the strikezone. Couple that with serious heat, and I'd sure be trembling in my stance if I were a hitter.

No Buck again today....Ugh
by OaktownPower on Apr 24, 2007 11:34 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'd rather have a healthy Buck right now
rather than a Buck who is playing injured ala last year's Chavy.
Last thing we need is to send Buck out there, have him jam his wrist into a wall, and be out for an even longer time.

Just got back from the Sac game
I suppose he was playing 3B b/c DJ was on first. He didn't get a lot of action; missed one pop up in the sun.

He's at third
in part because they wanted to give him some experience there. At the beginning of spring training they were saying they'd do that.

Losing can be phun!
deadspin links this web countdown of the Philadelphia Phillies' inexorable march toward a mark once thought unattainable...becoming the first major league franchise to lose 10,000 games.
They're 33 losses away (and losing to the Nationals as I write). I just hope they get the milestone first and steal some of Bonds' thunder.
