Open Thread: Game 10 - A's vs. White Sox (cont)
As we head to the bottom of the fourth inning, the A's (whose offense actually scored for the first time in the first inning) lead the Sox 3-1.
Kennedy is hanging in there, but it's safe to say we could use some more runs.

final
the final score will be 3-1.. i can feel it...
i say
it will be 3-2. we don't know how to win by more than a point.
well
just like last night, we have one good offensive inning and the rest are wasted. At least today it came first so the suspense is lessened.

Longing for the days
when everyone in the lineup (?2001? (2000?) could hit one out? Giambi, Tejada, definitely, but even Velarde. And, a catcher like Hernandez got over ten a year.
.....not fun. Interesting, but not fun

Now the suspense will be...
Can we prevent the Sox from scoring any more runs? I'm just nervous no matter how good our pitching has been.
kendall should bunt every time
his swing is just horrible
i don't have the game on, only gameday
so how deep was that kendall fly out?
by Dave V on Apr 11, 2007 1:41 PM PDT reply actions
double play
very nicely done
Sandy Kofax has possessed him?
Well, let's not get greedy
Ok, how about Brandon Webb?
kennedy
does a great job
5 inning 1 run and 3 hits
who would have thought after the spring he had.
he keeps his pitches down now, that helps.
Esteban Loaiza
You know, if Chad Gaudin and Joe Kennedy keep turning out quality starts till Loaiza comes back, Loaiza might find himself with out a rotation spot!
How about trading Loaiza when he comes back from the DL?
you need 6-7 starters
so you don't trade loaiza or anyone else.
no, don't trade loiza
you're crazy if you think those 2 guys will continue to pitch the way they are now.
Don't be too optimistic
For a while, he was nearly even on balls and strikes...
and not costing us $126 million
or date hillary duff
he actually has similar piteches to zito
his curve-ball is as big as zitos
let's go
give me an other run right now... 2 runs is not enough
Where is the POWER?
The A's need to hit some homers every now and again.

They have 2 on the year...right?
Bradley and Piazza?

damn
diving catch from anderson in cf
that was a tough play
you can't make this stuff up...
"As a pitcher, I'll take that play ten times out of ten," talking about the Dye play where he turned a single into a double.
Better than a single into a Inside the Parker.
If only a double, with two outs... not the worst.
sure
But if he's willing to accept his fielders screwing up and giving free bases away, then won't that pitcher not be as good as another pitcher who doesn't tolerate it in his fielders?
It's not like a pitcher can control that stuff too much, but if you have outfielders who consistently play singles into doubles, then that's a net negative effect on the performance of the team.
nice play by scooot
and walker can't pick it at first
LOVE the quick hook!
Seriously!
Why a pitching change now?
Is his pitch count high? He's only gone 5! I don't get it.
Also, it's great that I feel like I actually want Joe Kennedy to pitch LONGER in a game.
i love it
take him out befor he gets in trouble.
I just hope that Geren doesn't leave...
the relievers in too long like last time...

I don't know about letting him pitch to Konerko
if u're just about to pull him after the 1st batter. wouldn't u rather have Kiko pitch to Konerko too?
boom, boom!!!
Nasty sliders
great sliders
he only threw him sliders, very nice
they were good ones too
sacto pain in ass

mac laptop, not downloaded
media player yet for it...doing the yahoo gamechannel
who is going to pitch the
7th, 8th and 9th?
hopefully we can avoid using Witasick today
I just don't like the idea
of using our bullpen for 4 innings when our starter has given up 1 run through 5 innings. AND we're up by 2 runs. If we were to do that all season we would burn out our bullpen arms a la Felipe Alou. It's risky.
Off day tomorrow?
That should help somewhat.
Nice job, Kiko!
Hopefully he's back to form after the season-opening shellings. That would be very good... ;)

Back to back homerun challenge
Who can keep a straight face when the announcers offered that?
we'd double our season total in one inning
Sure is nice to hear the A's in FM
and my tuner can actually receive the channel.
Not so nice hearing 5A Rent A Space ads in FM tho

Wow. Walker's 1st inning GIDP
really signaled the end of our offense today.
At least our hits have been bunched today instead of scattered.
Aparently unlike Benji and Jose
Gustavo Molina has heard of South Beach.

so this is what having a good manager is like
if only geren had art howe's chin
then he'd really be a useful manager.
I really like Marshall
Normally we have a rule 5 guy on the squad and he is lucky to get into a game for mop up duty. Geren has pretty much used Marshall as regular part of the pen from day one. He has proven to be more then just a LOOGY as well. Nice pick up by Mr. Beane, even though the guy he really wanted didn't pan out as well.
i can't wait till suzuki is ready
to catch in the majors
to watch kendall hit is just painfull
No offense
It's a good strategy to follow...that once you get the lead, go out in order as many times as possible to keep your pitchers from getting tired. Of course, it works for the other team too.
Let's get some insurance in the 8th!

I don't think we need another injured player
on the team
for the whole year?
i think the odds are about 50/50 for that
don't we have the most
hits in the al? i know we did a couple days ago. problem is not getting hits, its getting hits that plate runners.
he is INJURED
but not much chance to score there
with two outs already. i'm not sure what the lefty-righty situation is with the remaining chicago pitchers, but maybe that played a part in the decision?
Sure, but you also get better D for tight game
in the late innings.

I leave to go eat, write a paper
And I come back just in time to see a 2 run homer for the White Sox. The sporting gods hate me with vigor.
The entire team should be arrested...
if we somehow steal this game today.

Can someone
anyone, tell me why Kielty is left in to hit right there? His superior defense? his power swinging left handed?
by mikedaviswhereareyou on Apr 11, 2007 2:42 PM PDT reply actions
i'd have gone to buck also
but i think oz fest was warming a lefty to counter if we tried that move.
When was the least A's hit?
Was it Swisher's back in the 4th?
i think ken just said
yes, that is correct.
I understand that he is injured, just wish
we still had him. Solid defense, as well.

OOOOGHA BOOOGHA!!
Yes, "Steal."
If you have one hit after the first inning, have your 6th starter give up only one, then it can count as a steal.
by nfadil4 on Apr 11, 2007 2:45 PM PDT reply actions
Huh?
Up 3-1 with 2 out in the 8th with your All Star setup man in there? Anything but a steal...if the ChiSox win..that's a steal

Other than Swish's hit
in the 5th...we've gone 1-2-3 in every inning since the second. impressively horrendus.
were definitely getting no-hit this year. my money's on sling blade or the other santana. but it might be paul byrd. or kyle lhoshe in interleague.
damn
did aj even have 2 walks all of last year???
walk??
podsednik homers, pierzynski walks, this is a bizarre series.
Because we complain about them all the time
Duh.
houston, we have a problem
its called the strikezone.

Well - didn;t deserve last night's win... oh well - I hate April/May
ouch
that stings.
guess you can't be perfect every time out.
maybe if we could score enough runs so we don't have to use the same guys so often, this thing won't happen that much all year.
Sigh
If it's not one thing, it's the other. Nice showing from the offense after that first inning, by the way.
thank christ! i was running out of excuses
for drinking.
One of my favorite quotes
from Charles Bukowski:
"That's the problem with drinking, I thought, as I poured myself a drink. If something bad happens you drink in an attempt to forget; if something good happens you drink in order to celebrate; and if nothing happens you drink to make something happen."
"I look up to the heavens
For a ray of hope to shine.
And there it is in neon:
"Liquor, Beer, and Wine."

All righty then!
So who wants to hear about intellectual property rights and the US complaint to the WTO against China?
Well
Alan Embree > Huston Street.
Two days in a row
With HS, right?
That's been bad before.
thought it was usually
2 innings in a row... or coming in the 8th with any outs, guys on, and having to stay in for the 9th.
Either way, I think some rest would do him good. And Duke. And Calero.
It's hard to be perfect every time out. I wish our offense would pick the pitchers up so they have SOME room for error. (though technically they did today... but yeah)
You just wait...
We just need to get our heavy hitters kendall and scutaro to the plate. Then we got this.

Big Scoring
I'm glad the offense decided to score in at least one inning each game. 3 of the 27 innings not a bad start. At least it was more than 2 runs today. What is that twice this year.
Bleh. Recap up.
Time To End It All
Just kidding. Tough loss, but there are still 152 games left. I think we will all make it.
just get Stewart out of LF
I know today it was by necessity, and I guess vs lefties he's fine there, but let's not have this guy play left field every damn day. Please.

Almost worst offense in 3 years
In the 10 game span so far, they scored 28 runs total. In the last 3 years, 04-06, the worst 10 game span is 24 runs during 8/12-23 in 2005, when they scored 24 runs, and went 2-8. Moving a couple games back around the same period in 2005, 8/11-21 or 8/10-20, they scored 28 runs in a 10 game span, and resulted in 3-7 and 4-6 record respectively. I think we are lucky to be 4-6 so far.
