Link Dump 2/13: Worst Dump Ever

Around the Majors...

Mo Rivera on his upcoming free agency: "I definitely want to finish my career here, but if they don't give me the respect I deserve, I have to move on."

Zambrano is putting the Cubs in a tight spot by demanding a contract extension: "Whatever happens, I don't want to know [anything] about a contract during the season. I want to sign with the Cubs before the season starts. If they don't sign me, sorry, but I must go. That's what Carlos Zambrano thinks."

Rivera and Zambrano have used two of the great neogiating tactics of modern times: "respect" as a proxy for "money" and the third person as a proxy for accepting responsibility.  Excellent work, you two.

THT looks at the best young second baseman in baseball while BPro does the same using PECOTA.  Neither predict big things for Kevin Melillo.

Ugh.  When does baseball start?

Dogs banned from Capitol
Buildig in Juneau:
No one wants to point a finger and no one will name names, but a certain large dog at the Alaska Capitol recently abused the privilege and spoiled things for the other four-legged visitors.

Security cameras captured the dog on its first -- and last -- visit to the Capitol, leaving a sizable deposit in front of the fourth-floor elevators.
...
"We'd had several incidents through the interim and that was probably the icing on the cake," said building manager Don Johnston, who viewed the videotapes to identify the culprit.

I'm not so sure "icing on the cake" is best terminology here...

Red light, Green Light
The one aspect of Ron Washington's leaving, may be more important than his fielding, and that was his judgement as 3rd base coach.  He was very aggresive, and seemed to have a pretty good average of runners safe at home. The A's are probably a little slower team wise this year, as I don't know if Piazza's speed difference from Frank, will make up for the difference in Stewart, and Payton, unless Shannon is truly healed, and regains a lot of his speed.  We will see if Lach takes as many chances.

Manager doesn't plan on tampering with a winning system

Pitching coach Curt Young returns for his fourth season, but Rene Lachemann moves from first base to third, replacing Ron Washington, who was hired as the Rangers' new manager over the winter.

Navy to 'call up' dolphins and sea lions to...
to protect a harbor.

My favorite part:"Sea lions can carry in their mouths special cuffs attached to long ropes. If the animal finds a rogue swimmer, it can clamp the cuff around the person's leg. The individual can then be reeled in for questioning."

Can you imagine being cuffed by a sea lion? I won't have to just imagine it if my Valentines Day wish comes true.

Jeff at LL is a Genius
Here are some choice nuggets from a discussion thread of visits to the Coliseum.
Went to five A's games in McAfee last year.  Those drums never stop.  I'm dead serious here.  THEY DO IT THE WHOLE FREAKING GAME.  I just don't get it.  I love going to baseball games, but I will never, ever go back to Oakland.  Hands down, worst place to watch a pro sporting event in the US.
I dont mind McAfee. the people there were really nice to me, and I had a big Mariner sign with me.  Of course it was easy for them to be nice when the A's were winning 100-0.
The Coliseum's okay ..

and strangely safe.  You have to go the Telco Conglomerate Stadium parking lots in China Basin to find your last (only?) baseball parking lot murder.

Second base
While no one is really projecting good things for Melillo, there is a second basemen in the BP write up I find interesting.  Brooks Conrad of Houston seems to be a bit blocked, but PECOTA seems to like him pretty well, and he does have decent pop.  Switch hitter, projected to average a total warp of 16.7 from 2008-2011 with an upside of 105.3 and a projected line of .269/.340/.487/.827 with average or better defense.  With Houston looking for a lefthander for the pen, maybe Halsey or Halsey+ ? gets us Conrad to replace Ellis.  It's a gamble I think is worth taking.
