Open Thread: Playoffs Day 4
The Diamondbacks and Rockies attempt to close out the NL series in sweeps this afternoon/evening.
Arizona at Chicago 3:07 PT
Philadelphia at Colorado 6:37 PT
And no matter who you're rooting for (or against) today, it's nice to bask in the afterglow of sulK-Rod's 9th-inning implosion and the Yankees' bug-out.

It's nice to contemplate a post season
scenario where the Angels and Yankees are swept out of the first round. In a perfect world the Red Sox are swept out of the ALCS.
I'd like to see the Rockies go all the way from that other league.
<sigh>
It's just like I dreamed.
A 'L' for Lackey, a 'L' for F-rod...it's like Christmas!
Better than Christmas.
I'll spend all winter and spring gloating that the Angels season lasted exactly one week longer than ours.
yep
I am hoping I can tell one of my So Cal clients, "Hey my team won as many playoff games as yours did! Cool!"
According to TBS
Jason Kendall is a "big game" catcher. I'm wondering which big game they're talking about. But then, I suppose you have to take anything they say with a grain of salt. Especially when they continue to tout "Frank TV" as "Very Funny".
I don't know about
"Frank TV", but "Frank Commercials" have become "Frankly Annoying".
Since when does Byrnes hit third?
Does Frank do Dane Cook? n/t
That's weird
as far as I know, he's never caught Mike Mussina..or Dennis Elkersley..
Since I have no one to hate in the NL
Is it wrong of me just to root for both series to extend at least one more game?
(Especially since I am rooting for the opposite in the AL...for more reasons than one. The sooner the Angels are out the sooner I can hate Boston again... I couldn't sleep this morning and HBO had their Reverse of the Curse documentary on. Puke-dom.
You can always hate the Giants.
I do. For no particularly good reason. It's not like they're a good team or likely to be one any time soon. But I still hate them. A lot.
No, not really.
I don't like Bonds the Giant. Bonds the baseball player I can respect talent wise. Bonds the man, I don't know, so I don't really have a personal opinion of him.
The Giants just rub me the wrong way. I wish I could articulate why I hate them as much as I do. Perhaps it's the city they play in, or I'm envious of the gem of a park they play in. All I'm sure of is that I really can't stand them.
for me it's the pompous look
on their fans' faces, no matter how well the team is doing.
After winning the first two in Oakland, a Giants fan, woman, mid-20's, decided to walk up and down the aisles and defiantly "apologize" to A's fans for not getting the sweep. Boy, did I want to trip her.
A jury of <i>your</i> peers
would never have convicted you.
let me rephrase
What I meant alox was anyone in the NL that is still playing...whew.
Yes, we agree on that. When the A's play the Giants and there's Giants fans around me, I turn into a whole different person. No one is safe, men, women, very young or very old...if you are going to cheer your team, fine. Taunt? Not so good for you.
I wouldn't mind the Indians winning the whole
thing. As long as the Giants aren't playing I have no problem with the NL winning the series.
it's funny.
I've read a story of a manager (Pete Rose?) doing something like that in a real game. He had to make a show of protecting a young player less he loose confidence in his manager.
So him and the ump screamed pleasantries at each other for a while. I think the player may have been Paul O'Neil.
woo hoo jason got a single and didnt hit into a
double play

useless info to snore on
Least amount of total Divisional Series games in one post-season: 14 (three times, 1996, 1998, 2006)
Only twice have there been two first round sweeps in the same league (both in the NL): 1996, 1997
now back to Frank TV commercials
seems like the Diamondbacks
are giving the Cubs some opportunities to score...and they still haven't taken advantage
Mark Derosa
Let's trade for him - he's obviously a True Athletic at heart.
Apparently Kendall taught him a few things
eric byrnes comes through
foolshgame22 will post here in 3...2...1..
ha ha...
I had just shut down the computer to go to my parents' house for dinner. Otherwise, you would have been correct. ;-)
good post season for me so far
I wanted the LLLAAAAA Anti-Angels to lose, I wanted Lackey to get lit up, Annoying-as-hell-rod to blow a game, the Yankees to be embarassed, the Rockies to NOT be embarassed, and for the D-backs to help the Cubs continue their "woe is us" mantra. So far, so good.
well shoot 0R0H0E
Where was that good karma during the regular season when we needed it? ;)
dead, buried, non-existant?
Pick one. I guess I should say that I said when they DFA'd MB that we would end up 20 games back. I fortunately missed that call but sadly not by much.
thanks for playing cubbies
99 years and counting
1 playoff series win during that time.
Like the saying goes in Chi-town:
"Anyone can have a bad century"
so if they lose tonight
does that make it 100? or does that make it 99?
by Amnesiac727 on Oct 6, 2007 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions
this makes 99
straight years that will end without a World Series title for the Cubs. (technically 98 since there was no Series in '94)
Die Dane Cook Die!
by Amnesiac727 on Oct 6, 2007 5:36 PM PDT reply actions
I'll be damned, Cook was right
I flipped through my calendar and there really IS only ONE October!
dane cook is wrong
i have one of those two-year calendars.
you got me!
My new Raiderette calendar covers two Octobers!
I hung tough for three days
but finally surrendered today to the dual attack from Dane Cook and Frank TV. It's now the mute button plus the ESPN Radio broadcast on KNBR.
Jon Miller
Jon Miller had a pretty good call of the bug situation in Cleveland yesterday. It was quite entertaining. Anybody else catch that?
Too bad for Miller
He was imprisoned with Dusty Baker, who kept saying stuff like "They need to get more baserunners on base".
wait, wouldn't that just clog up the bases??
how do you spell torture?
if this were the A's, I'd have thrown up on the person in front of me.
As the person in front of you
I'd appreciate it if you'd bring a bucket next year.
I really can't get into this game. I guess I'd
like to see the Cubbies win one and it's apparently not in their Statement of Work, so I'll sit here and await the beginning of the Rockies game so I can get all teary-eyed when the Coolbaugh boys throw out the first pitch. At least I HOPE TBS shows that!
nah... they won't show it
they'll start to, but then cut in with Big Frank... and unfortunately I don't mean Thomas.
Oh, kapers
You didn't get a chance to get all misty-eyed on us! I am bummed they didn't show it as well.
Kerry Wood is still alive?
Wow. That's news to me.
"Alive" and "pitching" are two
separate issues.
Agreed
Man, if I said that hasn't gone through my head tonight I'd be lying.
Cubs =

Considering that they were 66-96 last year
I don't see it quite that way, although I'm sure their fans and the Chicago media will.
the scans through the crowd
don't seem to be all gloom and doom...weird
(good point, Soaker)
I meant *in this series*.
yes Jennifer...and done by the numbers...
How's this since 1908?
In 13 playoff series: 1-12
(World Series 0-7, LCS 0-3, LDS 1-2)
In 65 post-season games sine '08: 18-47
(World Series 9-28, LCS 6-11, LDS 3-8)
Only four series have gone the distance (one of hich they won), belying the theory that the Cubs lose in heartbreaking fashion.
No they don't, they just...LOSE
Jason Kendall
Possibly playing the final inning of his career? He's such an "old 33"; I can't imagine anybody signing him as a primary catcher but he certainly could catch on with somebody as a backup (at much much less money than he's making now). But if he's interested in managing, this could be a great time to get started; maybe after managing in the minors plus doing some coaching in the big leagues for the next few years, he could have a big league manager's job before age 40. And I think he would be a fine manager...if that's a career path he'd like to take.
With that goatee
if he put on a beret he could get a job on MythBusters.
why do you think this may be the end
of his career? I would think a number of teams with young pitching would take him. I am amazed he is playing at all after destroying his ankle. That was one on the worst injuries I have ever seen. And with that, he strikes out.
He has caught 1625 games in his career
which, unless your name is Pudge Rodriguez or Gary Carter or Carlton Fisk, is a **LOT** of games to catch, and makes him an "old 33" (considering also his rapid offensive decline).
Jason Kendall: Clutch Hitter
That's who I would want up in the 9th with the franchise on the line. (or not)
Pretty soon, he won't be either.
Poor Cubs. Go Byrnsie!
Valverde is DEALING!
those were pretty strikes!
second Cub K's looking
this is your 2007 season....glub, glub...coming to an end.
At least Soriano is more likely to go down swinging...huh, awfully quickly too
Unfortunately...
...he already won one -- it reads "1990." I won't go anymore into that.

to quote the Cubs . . .
Just wait until next year!
well at least pinella and the cubs
have carlos zambrano ready to pitch in game four, aka opening day 2008.
I was glad when Beane got rid of him
(for Witasick and Kennedy, cough cough) and I was wrong. It's good to see him and the team doing so well.
he's matured as a player
I saw him play quie a few times this past summer. The difference in his play is noticeable.
one more stat and I'll stop (collective AN cheer)
Arizona is only the fourth NL West team since the "new" playoff format (1995) to advance to the NLCS.
(Never has the NLCS been represented by two NL West teams in the same season...could happen this year)
The other three teams- 1998 Padres, '01 Diamondbacks, and '02 (team we hate the most)- went to the World Series.
I guess that's more than one stat.
Leaving for dinner soon, Go Rockies.
(even though my ex-gf will gloat on Monday...)
call me crazy
but the 'Backs seem to have what it takes to win it all.
...unless you're a network selling ad time n/t
ENOUGH OF FRANKTV!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!
And take DANE COOK with him!
Was that Orvil Redenbacher
in the first photo with Dr. Jarvik?
Does anyone else
think Moyer's perma-grin makes him look like the Joker?
and the lights go out at coors field!
bug swarms, no lights, this is an entertaining postseason so far.
just means another chance to see Frank TV ad
I was wrong!!! It was everyone's fav Dane Cook
Angel Hernandez:
"What? Play ball, c'mon!"
Holy carp
Stanford is only 6 points down to USC in the 4th quarter. In LA, no less.
AUGH!!!! So much for 30 point favorites
and they can say goodbye to 2nd place, even if they win
what the heck has happened to USC being
so dominating this season? I don't know why they were supposedly better than when they had Leinhart and Bush
Go Trojans!!
I. Hate. Dane. Cook.
Doest TBS have CGVs?
oh my god
is stanford going to win?
Is it on TV?
FOund it about 15 seconds to late.
Good for the Cardinal
I having no connection with Stanford (I like to remind Stanford folk that I went the UC DAVIS), but that is a truly impressive win over the U of Spoiled Children.
Crap, yes it is. Booty sucks.
4 frigging interceptions.
crap?
are you actually rooting for the yankees of college football, lebron kapers?
I have loved USC forever, but especially when
they got smart and hired Pete Carroll
usc moving in the wrong direction
39 seconds left now...
Drive Summary: 2 plays, -7 yards
1st-10, USC41 J. Booty sacked by P. Egboh
2nd-17, USC34 J. Booty incomplete pass down the middle
booty's game winning 4th quarter drive
a sack, two incomplete passes (both down the middle? with less than a minute left?), and an interception against the impenetrable stanford D.
I'll be watching Florida-LSU for awhile now
It should be over in time to come back to Denver for the end of the baseball game.
Could be good for Cal, but bad for Pac-10.
Yeah, but . . .
some might argue that Stanford is a pretty shitty team.
that's what I meant
Shitty non-conference teams beating Pac 10 teams is worse than shitty Pac 10 teams beating good Pac 10 teams.
Like....
Notre Dame beating UCLA. That will hurt the Pac 10.
ucla-notre dame?
UCLA going down
This is very bad for the Pac-10. Also specifically for Cal...the Cal-UCLA game in two weeks was going to be an extremely attractive game for national interest, now not nearly so much.
Just as you posted that
LSU cuts the lead to 17-14.
Baseball? There's a baseball game going on?
it was the lou holtz pep talk
Back to baseball...
...anyone who would vote for Holliday as MVP over Rollins needs to have their head examined.
okay, but
rollins doesn't even lead his own team in avg, obp, slg, hr, or rbi.
rollins has a lower OPS than howard, utley, burrell and rowand. he's third in doubles, fifth in avg, and tenth in OBP. ON HIS OWN TEAM.
prince fielder is the NL MVP.
defense
http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/inde...
i'm sure rollins is above average, but it's not like he's top 3 at his position (again, unlike THREE of his teammates: utley, rowand, and victorino).
and since nick was comparing rollins and holliday, i'll mention that holliday is the #2 LF defensively.
But Rollins plays the most valuable
defensive position, where you don't expect that kind of offensive production, whereas you do in LF. I'd take Utley or Holliday for MVP, but I don't think it's a ridiculous argument.
(And in listing his stats, you didn't mention his 20(!) triples.)
if you want to vote for MVP
based on defense, triples, runs, and stolen bases (the four things rollins does well)....
i assume curtis granderson (better defense at his position than rollins) and his 23 (!!!) triples is your AL MVP?
He also hit 30 HRs
how many fewer than PRINCE FIELDER
the rollins-holliday MVP thing is just media hype
i'm not sure why you people are falling for it. they're both in the playoffs (hey, like morneau last year!).
prince fielder isn't in the playoffs because his manager sucks, dave bush had a 5.12 era, chris capuano had a 5.10 era, and ben sheets hurt his hamstring in mid-september.
do you really want to punish fielder for that?
Unfortunately
There are too many voters who think like Jon Heyman or Joe Morgan for the Prince to win.
Granderson would be an
MVP candidate if he was in the NL. (He's also good at HRs and doubles (and singles)). Triples are undervalued by OPS relative to HRs.
The defensive difference
Utley and Howard are hurt by their stints on the DL. More WS's for Rollins.
The real issue here is the Coors Field effect: Holliday's OPA is 60 points higher at home, and his SLG is 240 points higher. He's a LF who slugged .485 on the road (Rollins SLG'd over .500 home and away). Rollins actually had a higher OBA on the road, and slugged only 50 points better at the Bank.
I don't follow the NL closely, so I haven't looked closely at the whole MVP picture. But a Holliday win would be like the Morneau win last year (or George Bell 20 years ago over Trammell), and maybe worse.
i have no problem with rollins over holliday
but prince fielder is the NL MVP. any other first place vote is a wrong vote.
I would have no problem with a Fielder vote
Again, I haven't looked at the whole league, just taken a quick glance at the NL 2007 Leaderboard. Rollins is just as obviously a far more valuable defender than Fielder, but I doubt that that advantage makes up for the OPS difference between them.
So again, I have no problem with putting Fielder at the top of a ballot. If Chipper Jones hadn't missed nearly 30 games, he'd be a damn good pick, too. But all the "MVP" talk about Holliday is pretty silly, and he just didn't have a better year than Rollins did.
home-away
OPS: fielder away > rollins home
HR: fielder away > rollins home
I don't have a strong opinion on this, but...
Fielder in the field=big minus to his overall value
Rollins in the field=big plus to overall value
So I would guess they meet somewhere in the middle of their respective OPSs. It's not clear at all that Fielder is more valuable.
i think you're overvaluing defense
but of course i'd also take ryan braun over troy tulowitzki for NL RoY...
defense is important
and as current A's fans we should know that offense at the key defensive positions is very important.
Various diaries have suggested like 40 guys to help the A's offense, but they're all corner OFers or 1Bsman. Great hitters at C/SS/CF are extremely valuable.
sure defense is important
but you seem to not even care that NINE HITTERS ON THE PHILLIES HAD A HIGHER OBP THAN ROLLINS.
not in the league, ON THE PHILLIES.
up the middle
again, just on his own team, utley was the best defensive 2b in the NL, and rowand was the best defensive CF in the NL.
great hitters up the middle:
utley .976 OPS
rowand .889 OPS
rolins .875 OPS
at SS, rollins isn't even in the top 3 in the NL. where does he even rank among NL shortstops? you have provided no data here.
david wright, NL MVP?
What are the odds
Or note the A's team BABIP
difference between most of the year and afterwards when Crosby/Chavez/Kotsay weren't manning their positions, and Cust was playing in the OF with a bad CFer every night.
That was not strike 3 to Howard n/t
SOMEBODY SCORE PLEASE.
Sorry.
WHOA!
woooooooo
Crimeny
Matsui the masher, who would've thought.
burrell
maybe his LF defense really is worse than manny...
LF defense
What is really sad is no one in the AL broke 0.
Burrell with...
...A "Custian" effort.
In his wildest dreams, Jack Cust did not
expect to be an adjective by the end of the season.
Wow, was Ichiro
well, it was his first year at the position
so the best defensive RF would be the worst defensive CF? maybe it's not such a great idea to move buck to CF...
Didn't he play CF in Japan? n/t
well yeah but 2000 was a long time ago
and ichiro was 33 this year, so after six years away from the position i doubt he can play CF as well as he could at 26.
It's really fun to watch Moyer pitch
Wow, drama..
Dane Cook is truly an imbecile
Someone needs to explain to him what the word "pivotal" means, preferably by hitting him over the head with something that pivots.
I know I'm an idiot
but I've been trying to figure this out...who is Dane Cook? Meaning, both what is the his role in this broadcast, and what is the pop culture context in which he apparently exists? I've only seen his name in AN threads, which I've only been reading sporadically..
You've heard about
That amoeba found its way into a puddle on the men's room floor in the Laff Factory, and a few days later Dane Cook showed up at their open mic night.
The rest is history.
obviously you don't watch enough "frank TV"...
Just watching those ads
No, I'm vegetarian.
OK, back to baseball
LSU is a well-deserved #1. I assume Cal is #2 and tOSU is #3, though some of those votes could be reversed.
Interesting; Gordon's wearing earplugs
todd helton was backup QB behind manning?
still not as gritty as college punter darin erstad.
Man that was impressive.
Coming off that monster shot.
Phillies home field advantage
Seems like someone in the LF Bleachers is trying to help the Phillies feel more at home.
Supposedly,
Veteran stadium had a subterranean courthouse/jail for those fans that were deemed to have gone to far by even Philly standards.
That was more for football crowds, I think
Though I know someone who used to work at the Vet (running the diamondvision board), and showed me the tapes the Phillies' tv camera crews made of the "loving couples" in the upper reaches of the 3rd deck. You'd be surprised how many people suddenly seemed to get the urge out there in a section by themselves...
Looks as though
this may be National league sweeps week. Have four teams ever been swept out of the playoffs before?
Yeah baby! Let's crack this thing open now.
Or let's just hold on to win it.
That's good too.
I'm the only one rooting for the Phils, huh? n/t
FSU is, but he's from philly
the rest of us are on the rockies bandwagon.
Then I guess FSU and I will go cry in a Yuengling
That was Dane Cook, wasn't it?
It's just a visceral reaction, huh.
Dane Cook again...
...brain eroding...
Could be worse
We could be suffering from ESPN announcers and those insufferable Sports Center spots.
No, even Tommy Lasorda
yelling at people in their kitchens is better than Dane Cook.

Nasty curve ball to strike out Howard
Howard was the NL Three True Outcomes champ this year, so it not to surprising he struck out.
another custian performance
as strange as that sounds
it should be a kick-ass NLCS.
All-west NLCS
That scream of agony you just heard was from Fox Sports headquarters now that they know that either Colorado or Arizona will be in the World Series. Good night.
Just wait 'til Cleveland wins the AL!
Imagine if Trevor Hoffman

Funny game.
baseball's nightmare
