DLD 10-4-7: Know what's difficult?
Making a DLD when the A's aren't playing any games, that's what. A's-related links are hard to come by. I did find this piece by Carl Steward on Eric Chavez, Rich Harden and Bobby Crosby:
Chances are, though, the A's will be forced into staying the risky course with all three players. Their health issues would make them difficult to move if the club were so inclined, but their contracts would make it doubly tough. In the final analysis, it's just something they'd rather not do considering how much they have invested in these three men.
And I checked up on the team MVP voting on the A's Official Site, and am pleased to report that with 5413 votes in, Ellis maintains a comfortable lead with 2126 votes, representing 39% of the votes.
Go Ellie! I'm really reaching, here.
Know what's easy? Watching the Angels get shut out. Lackluster Game 1 for LA. "Lackluster". Ha ha. Over at SBN site HH (sorry, no linking to that) the fans are turning on themselves like sharks in a feeding frenzy. To me, this series is not unlike watching Godzilla fight Rodan; they're both monsters, and you can't root for a monster, but how can you miss the fight?
Also, the Rockies and Diamondbacks won. You knew that already, but they're links, OK?
Because everybody was talking about it yesterday, and because it makes me smile, here's a treat:
Finally, I found this story about an Ohio state legislator flashing high school students.
"I have no idea where these came from"
Suuuuure you don't.
Jeez Louise, I hope somebody can find some worthwhile links. If not, perhaps we can pass the time suggesting names for Sal Jr.

Ahem.

PLAYOFFS! WOO!
<dir>I missed every game yesterday. As I was coming out of my medical coma this AM, Mike and Mike were bitching about the start times of the Playoffs. I laughed. Mike (hehe) was complaining about staying up late to watch West Coast games. He could handle missing the first few inning of a 3:00 start, but not the end of a 10:00 start. Deal with it, pansy.

I had to click on the link to find out who

Kiko Calero just called

Pushing Daisies--I liked it, but I can't figure out how he went through 20+ years of life without touching his dog. It's an excitable golden retriever, how's it not going to go bonkers and jump up on him at least once a day? (in the premise, he brought the dog back to life by touching it, but if he touches it a 2nd time, it dies again for good. How could the dog live 20 years without touching him?)
There's promise there,
but it could also go awfully badly. Agreed about the dog. The years-days-minutes-seconds countdown for everyone is already old after the 1st episode. And it may be trying too hard to be quirky. But it is an interesting premise and I like some of the characters, so its worth giving it a shot.

Rookie hazing?
Were there ever pictures this season of the rookie hazing? I know Zito was a big instigator of this, so I wondered whether it died when he left. Besides, who doesn't want to see Jack Hannahan is a slinky little number?
"slinky little number"
Is that a really subtle way of saying he should be wearing #3 on his uniform next year?
they DID haze the rooks
but i haven't found any pictures yet! :(
from what i've read ..
barton wore diapers (since he's the baby).
braden wore a white trash can costume (since he's "white trash", he said).
meyer wore some flowery bell bottom hippie outfit.
furmaniak wore a spartan costume.
suzuki wore an asian supergirl costume.
casey chavez (eric's brother/ bullpen catcher) wore a nacho libre costume.
swisher said in the last post game show of the season that he has pictures and he will see if he can post them on the A's site!
Actually...
I think Swisher said he would post them on his own website (nickswisher.net) if the guys were okay with it.
jocketty and larussa to seattle? (from LL)
uh oh:
http://ussmariner.com/2007/09/19/joc...
In an article that was co-published in a St. Louis newspaper this morning, Larry Stone gives words to the rumor that Buster Olney has been repeating on sports radio in recent days, suggesting that the Cardinals GM/Manager tandem of Walt Jocketty and Tony LaRussa could end up in Seattle this winter, replacing Bill Bavasi and John McLaren. As with all of Stone’s articles, it’s worth reading, even though the only connection to the story right now is Olney’s public assertions and some long running rumors about the future of the Cardinals franchise.
...
Walt Jocketty got his start in baseball under the Sandy Alderson regime with the Athletics, coming out of the same tree that would later produce Billy Beane, Paul DePodesta, J.P. Ricciardi, and the popularity of the Moneyball theories, but Jocketty is, at heart, a scout. He was hired to run the Cardinals in 1995, and a year later, brought in Tony LaRussa, whom he knew well from his days in Oakland, and the two have held their current positions ever since, achieving significant success.

Harden for Ichiro, Jones and Putz? How 'bout it, Walt?

jocketty
sure beane kicked his ass in the mulder trade, but in 13 years under jocketty the cards have made the playoffs 7 times, and to the world series twice. i'd prefer he stay in the NL, hopefully they go to cincinatti:
"With LaRussa’s contract expiring, however, and the close ties between GM and manager, it has fueled plenty of speculation that the two will make themselves something of a package deal this winter, and if LaRussa leaves St. Louis, Jocketty will attempt to follow him out the door. Popular reports have tied the two to division rival Cincinatti, where a major investor in the Reds is a former part-owner of the Cardinals, and has ties to both Jocketty and LaRussa."
when? was that before or after
the early-september collapse?

But Thursday, the Mariners' CEO, Howard Lincoln, announced that both Bavasi and Seattle manager John McLaren will be back for the 2008 season, ending rampant speculation about the job security of both men.
Almost one year to the day that Lincoln declared that Bavasi and then-manager Mike Hargrove were "on my hot seat," he gave a strong vote of confidence to the team's current manager and GM.
The Mariners, at 84-74 when the announcement was made, are assured of their first winning season since Bavasi was hired before the 2004 season. But a late-season collapse that saw them lose 15 of 17 games knocked them out of contention for the team's first playoff berth since 2001.
Off season plans...
With BB et al beginning to make plans on the future of the team, here is how I see the As viewing the importance of individual roster players for next season. (Ranked from 1 to 15)
Untouchables:
1. Nick Swisher- one of the faces of the As
2. Travis Buck - lock to be in the OF, hopefully can remain injury free
3. Danny Haren- young, cheap ace and staff leader... needed to teach the other youngsters. Should be able to maintain this year's results and the only true untouchable on the pitching staff
4. Kurt Suzuki- Proved to be a solid replacement to Kendall. Needs to continue to build trust with our staff.
Very, very, very unlikely to be moved
5. Daric Barton- Quite near untouchable status. However, in the strictest of terms we could put Swisher at 1B.
6. Mark Ellis- Moved only if BB decides to take advantage of the weak 2B FA market.
7. Jack Cust- Only gets moved in the very unlikely event that we acquire Bonds.
8. Eric Chavez- BB seems to think he can get back to his old self.
9. Rich Harden- BB sees him as having "rare stuff"
10. Jack Hannahan- Needed as insurance incase Chavez goes down again.
Could be moved, but trade value not there
11. Bobby Crosby- A disappointment but contract plus injury history will make him difficult to move. Only goes if we acquire a SS replacement.
Most likely to be in talks to be moved this winter
(Even though as stated above I believe that no big trades will be made above a Lenny/DJ/BP surplus type).
12. Chad Gaudin- Could as easily been placed in the category above as he lacks consistency. However, moving him would be selling high and some teams think he has the best stuff on the staff. The Rockies have shown past interest.
13. Huston Street- BB is not fond on spending a significant pile of change on RPs and we do have a bunch of potential closers. Is more likely to move if Harden becomes the closer.
14. Joe Blanton- The most difficult call on the roster. In remaining competitive, we take a significant hit in losing Blanton. However, with Harden's injuries and Gaudin's inconsistency, he really is our only option in the SP staff to trade above a #5. And a case could be made, that if Harden was healthy, if Gaudin improves, if we received a ML ready SP via trade, and if we were able to add another arm.. that rotation of Haren, Harden, (trade SP), Gaudin, and (acquired SP) could be competitive. However, that IMO is way too many ifs to place a bet on. If Blanton is moved, I think the most likely destination would be the Braves. I think with the departure of E-Lo we don't have a position of strength in our SP to afford to move Blanton this off season.
15. Dan Johnson- Two words, Daric Barton.
(and obviously 15+ is vulnerable to be moved).

if beane can get something for DJ or street
like a decent CF, SS, or SP, i'm sure they will be gone.
I think its possible that Street...
could be moved to a team such as Yankees (if Mariano leaves) or Milwaukee (if Cordero leaves). I'd personally love to see a trade centering around Street for Hardy, which would solve our SS needs and make Crosby expendable. However, I think prying Hardy would be difficult to do and probably right now is more in the fantasy trade realm. Milwaukee also has some nice, young pitching aswell.

Ellis's comment: puh-leeze
When in the long history of baseball journalism have you ever read a player saying that the team he was on sucked and needed an infusion of better players than were on the current and projected roster?
Kazmir
just last week:"You see what we have here and you think we're really almost there but we've got to get some help. We're all young guys. In this division you've got to have a little help. ... We've got to step it up a little bit."
He is saying, we are pretty good, but to compete
with the Yankees, we have to get better. He never said they sucked.

exactly
What's more, the D-Rays are a special case: they are extremely young with a core of good, exciting players -- but none of them have peaked yet and they certainly could use some stabilizing presence (in their rotation, especially).
Santana
when the Twins traded Luis Castillo.
And wasn't someone on the Giants griping about the Matt Morris trade?
Just goes to show that players typically make dismally bad armchair GMs.
Exactly..

roster *losses*, not current players
"...just something they'd rather not do ...
... considering how much they have invested in these three men."
Sorry, but Billy's certainly savvy enough to know that you can't consider "sunk" costs when planning future strategy. Failure to ignore those costs is a big reason why so many mergers don't work -- people pay too much because they look for reasons to justify paying more (or dare I say "staying the course"?) instead of cutting their losses. You just have to chalk it up to experience and move ahead -- if you let past costs paralyze you, you lose.
Lackey vs. Ortiz
from King Kaufman on Salon:
The wonderfully deadpan and to-the-point stylings of Steve Stone, after David Ortiz of the Red Sox hit a home run off John Lackey of the Angels on a slow curve:
"When you throw an off-speed pitch and the hitter doesn't move his hands, you've got some big problems."
Can't you just picture yourself as Lackey, or Stone, or any other pitcher, having flipped that change up there? While it's still on the way, you note with interest that the hulking slugger at the bat has not flinched. It must seem like it takes an hour for the ball to get to the plate, and for that entire hour, you know it's going to get crushed.
um... also from Steve Stone too.

Pushing Daisies rocks
Bryan Fuller has an uncanny ability to make rather morbid subjects (death, talking to God like a crazy person) rather cute. "Pushing Daisies" is no exception. It's a keeper, though I fear that it's doomed like many other shows to which I've hitched my wagon in the past.
"Reaper" is also excellent. Not sure why my two favorite new shows are about death and hell. Many TV critics feel the same.
Pushing Daisies was only so-so for me, I don't
really like shows with that much narration, through the whole episode.

But I have a hard time describing the code to people because when you type it out, the computer interprets it as a photo. It looks like Jennifer knows another code to prevent the computer from reading the code, if that makes any sense whatsoever..probably not

Marion Jones Admits to Steroid Use
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...
Track star Marion Jones has acknowledged using steroids as she prepared for the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney and plans to plead guilty tomorrow in New York to two counts of lying to federal agents about her drug use and an unrelated financial matter, according to a letter Jones sent to close family and friends.
Jones, who won five medals at the Sydney Olympics, said she took the steroid known as "the clear" for two years beginning in 1999, according to the letter, which was read to The Washington Post by a person who had been given a copy. A person familiar with Jones's legal situation who requested anonymity confirmed the relevant facts that were described in the letter.
Jones said her former coach, Trevor Graham, gave her the substance, telling her it was the nutritional supplement flaxseed oil and saying she should take it by putting two drops under her tongue. Graham, contacted by telephone today, said he had no comment.
