Open Thread: Some Playoff Games That the A’s Weren’t Invited To
Semi-bitter note before piles of playoff happiness and excitement: You will notice that not one of the games starts at 9:30 AM, Pacific Coast Time. I like to think it’s the 400,000 calls we made to the MLB offices last year to complain.
Rockies vs. Phillies
National League baseball or not, I’m hard-pressed to remember a more thrilling game than Monday night’s improbable, wildly fantastic, playoff-berth-clinching game that saw the Rockies best Trevor Hoffman in the bottom of the 13th inning to send the champagne-soaked team from Colorado to Philadelphia for today’s game. The smart money is on the red-hot Wild Card team to mow through the series and continue on, but the Phillies are no slouch in the streaking department. Overcoming a near-impossible deficit to catch, pass, and knock out the Mets for the right to represent the East, the Phillies have their own thrills to motivate them in this series.
If I may make a suggestion to the Rockies? Please leave Jorge Julio back in Denver.
That being said, both of these teams and their fans are incredibly deserving of this chance, and should soak up every hard-earned moment of this playoff series. It’s a shame only one team can go through, but after Monday night, it’s pretty easy for me to root for the Rockies. Go Colorado!
Hamels vs. Francis kick off the playoffs at noon on TBS.
Angels vs. Red Sox
This is a tough series for me, considering it features the team I like the least pitted against the team I like the second-least. I think Boston fans, by and large, contain all the annoyance of entitled Yankees fans, without the number of championships to back it up. I have nothing to say to Yankees fans when they talk about the long and storied history of their winning franchise; they’ve certainly earned it, but when Boston fans try the same tactic, it falls flat. I have no love for the Red Sox, and have no desire to see them make another appearance in the World Series.
However, I have a deep-seated hatred for all things Angels (Vlad, I’m so sorry; can you just play for another team?!) and there are specific players (and manager) on the pretend Los Angeles team that I dislike enough to hope that they are bounced out in short order of this first round. I also believe that Boston is the only team that can stop the Angels from advancing, so I was delighted to see the match-up so soon. The Angels seem to have the Yankees' number; which is probably a combination of the Angels’ great pitching shutting down the Yankees’ great offense, and the Angels being able to hit the Yankees pitching. And, despite what the records will indicate, I also think Cleveland plays somewhat of an underdog role in these playoffs.
Neither of these teams has spent much time out of first place this season, and despite a couple of mild scares for the division lead, neither team has ever been in danger of missing the playoffs. But only one of them will advance to the next round, so the regular season counts for nothing starting right now.
Hated teams or not, this should be an interesting series; great pitching will challenge each team’s super-star(s) in a battle of red for the right to move on. (I should write copy.)
Beckett/Lackey square off at 3:30 on TBS.
Cubs vs. Diamondbacks
Look for a great pitching duel in this one, as the late, late game gets underway, but you’d be kidding yourself if you think any baseball fans, especially in Chicago, are going to be sleeping. This game features a popular ex-A (hi Byrnsie!), and the Cursed Team. Can they just win already? Hasn’t the footage of the old people crying and wishing they could have seen their Cubbies win just once in their lifetime gotten to anyone? My goodness; put them out of their misery. Yes, I will be rooting for the Cubs...at least until they face the Rockies in the NLCS.
Webb/Zambrano square off at 7:00 on TBS.
More threads will be open, if needed. Happy Blogging!

at Sundays game
a couple of Angel fans gloated over Morales' homerun off Street, to which an A's fan nearby responded with "Let's go Red Sox!" And I said "yeah!" while my niece looked at me as if I was crazy. It was a knee jerk response, but told me once and for all who I hated most.
Yep...that's exactly it.
I hate the Red Sox. Yet pitted against the Angels, I want them to hit everything out of the yard and I root for every pitcher (even Schill) to throw a no-hitter.
And oh...can you imagine Big Papi hitting a walk-off against F-Rod? I can only dream...
I actually don't hate the Red Sox as much
as I hate the Yankees. Or as much as I'm growing to hate the Angels. So... Go Red Sox and Go Indians! And then Go Indians again!
I just realized
that all 4 NL teams in the playoffs are different from last year's entrants
ESPN last night
Some ass-clown mentioned how we had "new blood" in the post-season this year, since 7 of 8 teams were non-repeats (Yankees being the only one). That is very true for the NL. For the AL, Boston and California Anaheim LA Orange County can hardly be considered newcomers to the post-season.
And I just realized that...
even though it seems like the Yankees and Red Sox are playing in the ALCS every year, they have both missed the Final Four the last two seasons.
Having that happen this year means the Angles advance, so it looks like I'm rooting for a semi-return to norm.
"Angles" is definitely a more appropriate
nickname. Why? They (and their fans) are obtuse.
and, being from Orange County ...
... they also tend to the right.
The all-hate series
If the Angels lose, I'll be happy, if for no other reason so Rev Halofan can shove his panther where it will do the most good.
If the Red Sox lose, at least we will avoid the Yankees/Red Sox circle-jerk, plus there is nothing better than seeing Red Sox fans watch their team lose.
If any AL team not from Cleveland advances to the World Series, I will become the world's biggest NL fan, even if the NL team is the Cubs with their annoying fans. I will praise the NL style of play while stressing the necessity of "manufacturing runs", and how the DH has ruined the game, and how players that walk a lot are selfish and just clog up the bases.
Heh heh heh.
Go Cubs Go
Win a few for Steve Goodman. Hey, Chicago, whaddya say? The Cubs are gonna win today.
And I read an interesting interview with Theo Epstein in the Boston Globe today. He would not discuss any non-baseball items with the reporter, including what's on his iPod. What has he got to hide? But, go Sox, for this round anyhow.
Hmmm...
P.S. Sorry, that's the best I could come up with on short notice!
P.P.S. Or probably on long notice, for that matter...

Its gotta be possible for the Angels and Red
Sox to both lose in the first round somehow....I just haven't figured it out yet
Winning team loses all their best players
in last game of the series. For example, lets say in Game 5, Lackey blows out his rotator cuff while beaning Manny in the head. Vlad then tears his already injured tricep while hitting a pitch ankle-high and two feet outside for a home run. In the 6th inning, Garret Anderson leaves the game with narcolepsy. The Halos go into the bottom of the ninth leading by one run. With two outs and the bases loaded with K-fraud pitching, JD Drew lines a bullet off of K-fraud's forehead, which is then caught in the air by Maicer Izturis for the third out. Red Sux lose, but Angels have to face the ALCS without Lackey, Vlad, GA, and K-fraud.
Obviously, the ideal version of this series would resemble Rollerball.
My Hope
Phillies over Rockies
D-Backs over Cubs
Indians over Skanks
Red Sux over Angels
D-Backs over Phillies
Indians over Red Sux
Indians over D-Backs
The worst case scenario for this fan would be a Cubs-Red Sux World Series. There would be almost as much posing and angst as an episode of the Real World. UGH.
Byrnes, no matter who's playing
i'm rooting for:
rockies over phillies
d-backs over cubs
indians over yanks
red sox over angels
rockies over d-backs
indians over red sox
indians over rockies
actual predictions:
phillies
cubs
yanks
red sox
phillies
red sox
red sox
I like your picks!
I would also love to see a Rockies/Indians world series. The Indians are the only AL post season team I can stand.
Top two titlelessness streaks on the line
Cubs with 99 years of futility, and the Indians with 59 years. The Phillies' 27 years only seems like forever, what with all the resounding boos.
Go Phillies!

Futility meter
Yes, Cubs fans have 99 years of futility, but at least the city of Chicago has in recent memory seen championships from the Bulls, Bears, White Sox, and maybe hockey, too, but I don't follow that.
Cleveland has had ..... nothing.
BTW -- have I mentioned that I'm moving to Cleveland at the end of this month? For real.

Are you still going to root for the A's from
Cleveland? If I remember, didn't you say you were originally from Ohio?
I know what you mean about Cleveland and futility. My boyfriend grew up near Akron. He definitely laments about the Cavs and Browns.
Have you ever been to Cleveland and, if so,
why are you intentionally going again? Just kidding. Goooo Indians!

Cleveland native
I've had it with this pretty tourist mecca and need a real city where it snows on opening day, and the day after, and the day after. (I'm moving back to be closer to family, and to be some place where I can afford a home.)
I really like the Indians, but I LOVE the A's and will stay committed. Those 10 p.m. game starts will likely kill me, since I usually go to bed at about 9:45. I'm already planning road trips to Detroit and Toronto to see the boys play.
Of all the gorgeous spots in the Bay Area, I will miss that hunk of concrete in Oakland the most. On Friday, I left early to be able to get over the BART bridge before the fireworks were set up, and I was scurrying around the upper deck walkway. I glanced through one of the stairway entrance, and saw the field glowing. Even though the A's were losing 2-0 to the Angels, it still looked like the best and happiest place to be.
by SportySpice @ Athletics Nation on Oct 3, 2007 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, good luck to you
Glad we're not losing an A's fan in spirit, but it's nice to be around family. I visited Cleveland once and it was nice... in September. I can't imagine a Cleveland winter living on the West Coast my whole life. How could one not have an open mind about Cleveland, if you cheer for a team in Oakland?
the winters are fine
Midwest summers suck.
Cleveland actually is a pretty nice place, the various eastside Heights especially.
I was in college outside of Cleveland right at the tail end of the old mistake-on-the-lake stadium and the opening of the Jake.
I heard about the locusts in the summer
Luckily we seemed to miss the sweltering summer weather when I was there. I was braced for terrible humidity and discovered it wasn't as bad as I anticipated. Funny thing was when I was there, it was in the middle of the A's 20 game win streak. I missed most of the drama from wins #11 thru #19, but got back just in time to see win #20 in person. I did get to see an Akron Aeros baseball game though.
I like all the brick buildings in Cleveland and the large grassy front yards. Everyone had really nice lawns. The Coventry area was great, also liked Kent, Cuyahoga Falls... Pretty much everywhere we went.
best of luck to you
I enjoyed sporadically sharing A's fandom with you, especially during last year's ALDS and ALCS
Thanks!
Hope to see you again soon, maybe on a BART platform again. Or better yet, at a playoff game.

Visit KC!
don't do it
I have the same opinions
Baseballgirl in regards to the BoSox & Angels. I'm rooting for Cleveland in the AL and Chicago in the NL. BoSox don't have the long history of championships compared to the Yankees. I may dislike Steinbrenner but I do like a lot of their players. I can never boo Jeter.... the guy is very good player and just seems to raise his game when it counts.
Yep...
and I'm VERY curious to see how A-rod will do.

Indians vs Phillies in the Series
I don't particularly care who wins that World Series or who the Phillies or Indians face in the CS, though if the Red Sox would beat the snot out of the Angels, that would be okay.
Oh does it matter?
In the past few days, I have realized that this season was like a really bad hook-up. Oh, the first of the season was looking good. Real Good....you start to think "Oh, this could be going somewhere that's really fun". You go on a few more dates, not real sure if you're into this or not, but decided "Well, why not? What's the worst that could happen?" Next thing you know you can't find your underwear, you have a weird rash and the Halos and Sux are in the ALDS......and Frank Thomas is doing pre-game commentary?

I don't think the Rockies announcers are unbiased ;-)
Who needs objectivity?
Bay Area "sports radio" 680/1050 am
doesn't appear to be broadcasting this game...and mlb.com is not offering it for free (not that I really expected it, but getting the game on Monday for free gave me some hope...)
well, that means I'll get more work done...
great, thanks for letting me know
because of work I can't listen to anything between 2:30-5 pm today, but will definitely tune in to the game after 5.
At least for today and tomorrow
1050 is not carrying the noon games but is carrying the 3:30 and 7:00 games. (According to the Chronicle.)
Also...HD telecast! I don't recall ever having received TBS HD before, and it's not listed in my Comcast channel guide, but I found it by channel surfing. Comcast Oakland has hidden it at Channel 735, up in the HBO HD and Showtime HD neighborhood.

Just a slight time delay

Damn
I have a TV in our work area, and it's perfectly okay for me to have the game on as long as the sound is not up, but I can't see the screen from my desk. Would it be a breach of etiquette for me to get the building guys to rewire our space so I could move the TV -- given that I'm only here for another week?
Flash Gordon...
A young phenom, hard-throwing righthander, slightly built, had a number of injury problems early in his career...finally gave up the notion of being a starting pitcher and has had quite a long, successful career out of the bullpen. Wow, he's almost 40. Anybody see a parallel to a certain Athletic here?
dunno
what the hEck are you talking about
If the Rockies can close out this game
I can see beating Cole Hamels on the road in Game 1 having a similar effect as the A's beating Santana in the Metrodome last year.
Agreed
Makes me feel like I need to wash my hands or something.
I feel dirty all over
but I am rooting for Boston.
I will need a shower after this game
If the Sux win, I'll feel incredibly dirty for wanting them to win.
If the Orange County Rodentia win, I'll puke all over myself.
Woot! 1-0
I actually have no trouble whatsoever routing for the BoSox. My grandpa was from Salem and was a huge, lifelong Red Sox fan. So it's kind of in the blood.
I hope they sweep the damn Halos.

You know, "refined" is probably the last adjectie I'd imagine using in connection with Lackey.

No joke.
'arrogantly boorish' is more accurate, IMO.
Lowell Deja Vu
Anyone notice that with Figgins stealing 3rd and Vlad chopping it to Lowell in the 1st how eerily similar it was to a play earlier in the year? Only difference was that he only stepped toward Figgins instead of diving at him and busting up his shoulder.
That's it Lackey...
...keep giving up hits...
I gotta turn in.
It's 1 am here and I've got to catch an 8:15 train tomorrow morning.
Have fun routing the LAAAAAAs to defeat!

That's not German.
I'm different from you guys
I'd prefer neither win, but I actually hate the RedSox more than the Angels.
Just watch Lackey or F-Rod when the Angels win
that should cure ya ;-)
well of course I've seen them
where the hell do you think I've been??!! Add in the big rat manager and that's enough to hate 'em... but I hate the RedSox even more. It's about the way their fans think the RedSox are the chosen team and that the are the chosen fans. Even if they've really no clue as to the history of their team. Also the way the media deal with that whole East Coast West Coast thing. I'm from Pennsylvania, so I know what this really means: only teams from the East are any good. You're obviously a California kid and see the rivalry between the A's and the Angels as a bigger deal than the East Coast West Coast thing. I don't.
Right before Ortiz hit that
I started typing a message that basically said "it feels like Boston is going to rip this open right now"
Yep, defintely rooting for the Red Sox

Now I really want the Sux to win.
disgusting
some those HHers are the most abominable humans (I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt).
makes me sick
I will not feel dirty if the Red Sox win, if only so that bc56274 will have to suck it long and hard.
I feel compelled to point out that ...
... combating anti-Semitism with homophobia (or is that misogyny?) isn't exactly a winning strategy.
not homophobia
The 'it' in this case would be the fact of the Angels losing. However, thanks for pointing out my possible hypocrisy.
You know, this is a good point
I tend to think of "sucks" and "blows" as being so completely divorced from their original insulting meaning that they no longer reference it, but I shouldn't. Mea culpa.
But "eat sh*t" is still okay, right?
Well that was a nice thing
to wake up from my nap to.
(Go...Boston? REALLY!?!)
Some meathead on HH is whining that the Boston
manager complains too much. Apparently he was serious. Typical crack smoking Angel fan.
why do you waste your time
reading those clowns' comments? Your life will be happier if you merely ignore them with disdain (I cured myself of looking at that site by remembering that the Rev makes money every time you go there).
Whoever compared that site
to right-wing talk radio was on the money IMO. I know that Michael Savage exists but nothing he says bothers me because I never hear it. Same with HH (and really, I'd rather not read here about what is being said on HH).
Typically I don't go there,
These announcers are so boring...
Yeah, I guess terrible is too strong a word...
Both with some connection to the A's
Ted Robinson did some TV work with the A's back in the '80's. An early adopter of extensive discussion of statistics, but never developed a very warm personality, so his radio jobs with the Giants and Mets didn't last.
Steve Stone was part of an ownership group which tried to put together a deal to buy the club from Schott and Hofmann.
Steve Stone
He won the 1980 Cy Young over a more-deserving Mike Norris. More East Coast bias for you.
I'm just waiting for this nightmare to end
So I can root against the winner in the next round without feeling like I have to go to confession for choosing a team in this round.
Unless the Yankees make it, of course, then we get a full seven game series of deciding who we can't stand more.
Looking forward to it already.
Please Cleveland spare us all, and I swear I won't mention "The Drive" or Michael Jordan ever again. (But I can't promise to keep Mike Davis in '81 from escaping my lips every now and then).
you can mention MJ ...
... just don't ever bring up Jose Mesa.
My colleagues are wondering
why I was yelling HA HA SUCK IT LACKEY YOU BITCH while they were watching something on C-SPAN in their cubicles.
Hi everyone. I'm probably in the minority,
but I'd like to see the Angels take the lead so F-Rod can come in and blow it. 3 frigging games straight. That would be fun.
Go Indians!
I want to see
a stray foul hit F-Rod's stupid goggles off of his ugly face.
Go Cubbies!!
That was a sickening stat for A's fans
Angels in 1st place since April 25
If Satan has his way
Dane Cook will spend eternity watching episodes of Frank TV over and over and over again.
Boy this is hard to watch. I despise the Red Sox

I'm not having any problem
rooting for the Red Sox to destroy the Angels.
Have to admit that I found myself rooting for the Angels in 2002...first against the Yankees and then particularly against the Giants. The Francisco Rodriguez story seemed pretty compelling that year. Of course, 2002 followed years of Angels suckage; the A's primary rivals in the AL West over the previous few years had been the Mariners, and the Rangers dominated the division in the late '90's.
My problem with both teams is that I question
their true devotion. Have you ever noticed how many people want to be with a winner? Yankee fans probably remain loyal to their team even when most of them aren't necessarily very familiar with the team itself. Angels fans have become annoying and Red Sox fans have began to appear out of nowhere.
Oh well... I love my A's even if they are sitting at home right now.

let's pitch Gil Heredia in game 5
Oops 6-0 in the first.
Thanks Gil. You too Terrence.
<manager> Okay Tim, big
playoff game tomorrow, hey why don't you out to the bar tonight and have some fun, let it all out, Boston has some great establishments.
all these things drive my point further
to Boston fans and their stupid Curse.
The Sox won their first five WS appearances (ok, it was a LONG time ago). Then they lost their next 4 (to some of the best teams in history), before ending 86 years of pain.
But the A's found new ways to lose in the playoffs year after year, shit Stephen King couldn't make up...and so it didn't make our great-great-grandfather cry, but it hurt us.
Most Sox fans could not remember the past failures. But we can.
Be sure to take Barry with you so he can play
his "music" for the opponents.

Okay, we're all distracted now.
Next up: Teddy Ruxpin reading A's playoff "highlights" while vacuuming.
Eh, I'm glad we have a sense of humor about it
But looking back on it all at once, wow, we sure do have a lot of memorably crappy playoff moments since 2000. (Which is a lot better than having no playoff moments at all since 2000; see Rangers, Royals, Pirates, etc.)
That's a low-blow, Poppy. Totally bush.

You would think that
if ever there was a pitcher who would benefit from KME, it would be Carlos Zambrano.
Me either. I was shocked not to see a pop-out
to the 2nd baseman with a RISP.

I saw him a few times on TV
this past summer...guy has matured in his play. He was handling right handed pitchers and off speed pitches better than I remember, also didn't seem to make many mistakes running the bases or in the field.
He's all growns up. He's all growns up.
He's all growns up. Sorry but I love that part from Swingers.

Interesting how it's not so annoying when
someone just types it...
(BTW, I appreciate it when relative newbies recognize that my capitalization scheme in my user name was intentional. Kudos.)
Dane Cook actually becomes dumber each time
they play the same commercial. I'm not sure how that happens but it does.

I remember standing up
for what seemed like an hour in the Boston series, derisively chanting MAN-NY, MAN-NY.
that series featured the most electric crowds
partly because of the Sux fans, but man, the buzz around the park that series was something else.
we had running arguments in the stands
except for one moment, when they showed the Yankees in their playoff game on the big screen -- everyone shouted in unison "Yankees Suck!"
Are you referring to those tiresome "running"
arguments?

Looks like most folks have worn out
I've been here on and off for nine hours now so I understand that. I guess the theme of the day has been solid pitching, with only 14 runs among the six teams through 26 innings. Could be a little different tomorrow, with inexperienced pitchers in the Colorado-Philadelphia game, plus the Yankees getting involved.
After 22 snowouts
that series will be completed during a freak warm spell in Cleveland on Thanksgiving Day, with John Madden in the broadcast booth serving up Terducken.
Angels, Red Sox....what's the difference?
All I know is that I will sleep well tonight knowing that Lackey got his ass handed to him.
Honestly, for me it's a no brainer. Have to take the Sox over the Angels. Anything positive for the Angels inevitably means something negative for the A's. I want the Indians to beat the Yanks, but I don't really care all that much. I'll root for the teams in inverse order of hatred. The Angels must exit early and painfully. Next to go is the Sux, followed closely by the Yanks.
So GO GO Indians, yes?

Guess that's it for me. Will check in tomorrow.
as good a first day of the playoffs...
as could be hoped for without the A's in 'em.
Angels are shutout and Lackey takes the loss.
Rockies win.
Diamondbacks win!!!
reasonably enjoyable day
got to hear part of the first, part of the second and all of the third game.
My favorite parts: getting an audio feed from a fellow ANer so I could hear the Phillies-Rockies game, and reminiscing about great moments (even the not so great ones) in the postseasons of 2003 and 2005
I was rooting for the Cubs
But at least it ended in time for Top Chef! Go Hung!
I just want to thank Dick Stockton
for telling me that "Julio Jorge" is on the Rockies.
