Around SBN: LeBron James Laughs In Kevin Garnett's Face

DLD 9/22/2006

According to Jon Heyman friends say aspiring actor Zito prefers SoCal, N.Y.

Boras as usual talks his client up:

The Oswalt contract is certainly relevant to what a premium player is worth when he's a year away from free agency. It's not a free agent value.

Ok.

Boras wants >$90 million.

reminds me of Kevin Brown's in 1998.

And responds the an anonymous Mets executive's assertion that Zito is no Oswalt

One had a big arm, and the other is a dominant control pitcher,'' Boras said. "I guess it's like a Nolan Ryan vs. Greg Maddux debate.

So, Zito "leadoff walk" is Ryan? Or Maddux?

Zito as an actor

There are seven TV appearances listed on a Web site I found. In six of them, he plays himself, while in the seventh, an episode of JAG, he plays a Navy pitcher. Apparently, he's a victim of typecasting.

Donovan rates the contenders' bullpens.

frank thomas article in the NY Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/22/sports/baseball/22thomas.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&oref=login

funny moment:
Listening to the television report about the recent Sports Illustrated article on Rodriguez, Thomas sat slack-jawed in the middle of a leather couch. He turned around and opened his mouth, but no words came out. In a different place, in a different year, this might have been awkward.

But in his new clubhouse, it was comical. Nick Swisher, the A's first baseman, stared down a couple of pitchers and yelled in his most sarcastic tone: "You call those hits?" Everybody laughed, including Thomas.

---

wtf moment:
"Oakland has a way of bringing out the joy in the game, even for those who might have lost it. Thomas and Swisher keep a running tally of their home runs. Thomas and Bobby Kielty play football in the outfield before batting practice. As Thomas absorbs a pass rush from his younger teammates, he looks like a 6-foot-5, 275-pound jungle gym."

To those of you who have the Times in front of you, I ask this: Look at the picture of Frank taking his curtain call. Most of the fans pictured are standing and cheering. BUT who are those UNGRATEFUL STIFFS sitting in the first row behind the A's dugout who are sitting down with their mouths closed as if they're in church. If you can't get your butt out of your seat to give Frank a curtain call, go home and watch the game on TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!

first hand account
that's me on the left edge of the photo blowing the two horns.  the four in the row in front of me are all sitting b/c they were white sox fans.  they booed Big Frank each time he came up to bat, and believe it or not - their favorite player was JackAss pierzinski (excuse me, i mean AssJack).  those people were in the 2nd row.  and in the front row, it was mixed w/white sox fans along with some A's fans that weren't very in to baseball.
that would explain the sitting from those folks.  and i have to say it sure felt good to beat the sox with Big Frank having a big day, and watching the sox fans, who hated Frank, sit dejected, despondent, disconsolate, and disheartened.

Zito 2006 = Kevin Brown 1998??!
Man, that's a real stretch, even for Boras.  Here's Brown's 1998:

IP: 257
Hits: 225
BB: 49
Ks: 257
HR: 8(!!)
18-9 record, 2.38 e.r.a. (160 ERA+)

Brown finished 2nd in the NL in innings pitched, WHIP, e.r.a., and K's.  He was 3rd in K/BB ratio (5.24/1) and 5th in BB/9 innings (1.74/9).

The advantage Zito has in this comparison is age:  Brown was 33 when he put together this season.  But you have to stand, way way back, and squint your eyes up an awful lot to make Zito's 2006 look anything like Brown's 1998.  Try again, Scott.

because baseball reference's top age-comp for Zito each of the last two seasons -- with comps of 971 and 976 -- has been Mike Hampton.

So you can see why Boras might want to throw GMs off the "which free-agent lefty does Zito resemble?" trail...

You know what that story is?
A plant, from start to finish. I'm a journalist, and I have to tell you, if I were writing a story about a pitcher, I wouldn't even KNOW where to find 'three friends' of the guy. What's he doing, going through high school yearbooks?

No, this is a story written by a tame journalist, who is giving Boras exactly what he wants - talk of Zito being interested in NY/LA (putting pressure on execs in those towns by increasing fan and media talk), and the framing of Zito as being 'like Maddux and Brown'.

The last few paragraphs are the big giveaway - it's as if Boras wrote them and faxed them in for inclusion.

So what's the writer get in return? Access. Watch for the big "Barry Zito, in his own words" story as soon as the deal is announced.

Not saying that he should be fired
but this may provide more insight.
The last straw for Girardi, 41, apparently was his ill-fated decision to bring back prized right-hander Josh Johnson after an 82-minute rain delay at Dolphin Stadium on Sept. 12.

"Not one of the smarter moves of the year," said the source, adding the Marlins' decision makers were "shocked" Johnson returned to the mound that night.

With the Marlins still clinging to wild-card hopes, Johnson tried to stay loose by playing catch with Dontrelle Willis in an indoor batting cage. That Johnson left four innings later with cramping in his forearm and was subsequently shut down for the year with a strained ligament did not help Girardi's case.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

It was he who raped Theo The Boy Wonder , and obtained Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez.

And while the Marlins are a $15 million team, they traded good players, in some cases superstars for good prospects.

Yes, the GM and scouting staff deserve credit for bringing in the prospects. But Girardi is the guy that took that young talent and turned them into contenders a lot faster than anyone expected. That demands recognition, possibly even an award and most certainly should prevent a pink slip.

were they really expected to lose over 100?
"a young team that was expected to finsh with over 100 losses"

who predicted they would have fewer than 62 wins?  john kruk and the espn gang?

even the betting line was 64.5 to 65.5 wins.

i believe that simulating 8 billion seasons or whatever had them in the mid-70s based on PECOTA and ZIPS, although i can't find a link.  i had them at 72 in my predictions at the start of the season.  it looks like they'll get to 80.

the difference is due to certain guys (uggla, olsen, etc.) performing much better than expected.  should girardi get the credit for that?  is that girardi pulling a young team together?  was it when olsen got in about three separate fistfights throughout the season?

he can go to the cubs or giants or wherever else is hiring next year, and he'll probably miss the playoffs.  meanwhile, the marlins will have a pretty decent team for the next five years.

Stuff I read
was comparing them to the Tigers of a few years ago, which I thought was harsh but I wasn't in a position to argue against. And Kruk is an idiot, why would I listen to his opinions on anything?

So the betting line was (essentially) 65 wins. 65 wins vs. 62 wins still means LOUSY team.

They had no starting rotation aside from Willis, no bullpen, and a line-up of Cabrera and....

They had amazing success with their young players. Kudos to the GM and the scouts, but Girardi was the only one in the dugout with any major league experience. I don't think it's a stretch to say that he helped his young prospects become big league players. Does he deserve all the credit? Nope. But he certainly doesn't deserve to be fired based on the performance of his team.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

by grover on Sep 22, 2006 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions

the betting line is not based on
actual analysis of what a teams W-L will be, it's based on how people will bet.

the best would be the ZIPS and PECOTA projections, but unless somebody posts those, why not instead use the 72 wins i predicted in my diary?

okay, so that's like 8 extra wins assuming they get to 80.

at least a third of that isn't due to anything on the part of either girardi or the front office, but instead due to the marlins starting 2b, pokey reese, mysteriously disappearing at the beginning of the season and having to be replaced by uggla.  so... luck.

I don't bet a ton
but I know one thing, Vegas doesn't do a lot of freebies. The line was 65 wins for a reason.

Moving on.

The Marlins are 76-77, 4 games out of the WC with 10 to play. No one expected them to compete for the postseason after what they did to their roster. Look, Girardi got dealt some good cards but you can't deny that he's played them well. Does he deserve to win the NL Manager of the Year award? Couldn't tell ya, I haven't been paying attention to the other teams in the NL but I can say that his team has been the most surprising to be in the WC race.

More importantly, he doesn't deserve to be fired for his performance on the field. You can't gut a team, fill it with 20+ rookies, hire a 1st year manager and then be upset when he has the team at or near .500 with 10 games to play. If Girardi gets fired after the seas its because his owner, Jeff Loria, doesn't like him. Which would be a stupid reason to fire an effective manager.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

by grover on Sep 22, 2006 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

fired...
i don't know if he should be fired or not, but i don't see any reason to give him credit for the marlins success.

as far as manager of the year is concerned, it just goes to whichever manager's team had significantly more wins than expected.  how can anyone say that overachievement is due to the manager?

ozzie won it last year, right?  chicago's starting pitchers did much better than expected.  if that's under ozzie's control, how come the starting pitching isn't as good this year even though they added vazquez?

what's the main reason the marlins are winning this year?  starters willis, johnson, olsen, nolasco, and sanchez.  maybe the pitching coach should win manager of the year.
same thing applies to the tigers.  it's all about the pitching, so why does leyland get the credit?

Because that's exactly what you're saying. Girardi has led that team because there was no else in the dugout who could do so. He created an atmosphere that allowed his players to play to their full potential, maybe even beyond their potential. I couldn't tell you about his in-game strategies because I haven't watched a single Marlins game all year. OK, I saw a couple innings when they played the Braves back at the beginning of the year but I don't think that's enough to go on. About all I could tell you from that experience was he had everyone dressed in the same colored jersey.

The A's probably have the least independent manager in the game, and even Ken Macha (love him or hate him) has a profound impact on the whether the A's win or lose. Why should we assume less of a manager with more latitude?

But let's cut to the chase and make this simple. Who do you think should win the NL Manager of the Year award?

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

how about bobby cox?
isn't he considered a great manager?  so then why shouldn't he win?  just because his team sucks this year?  but how can they suck, isn't he a great manager?

the answer to that question is that i don't care because i don't think it matters.  it's only slightly more important than who wins mascot of the year.

perhaps it's that you shouldn't be an a's fan at all, if you agreed with john kruk that chone figgins is the most valuable player in the AL, if you thought the a's were doomed if they didn't add players at the deadline, if you think of harden as fool's gold, etc.

OK, let's play
I never agreed with what Kruk said about Figgins, so you can just shut up about that bit o' business. It never happened.

I did think the A's were doomed if they didn't get outside help because. 1) I didn't think Stoneman would be stupid enough to stand pat. 2) I knew Crosby wasn't going to mount much of a second half and the A's needed an offensive boost and the most logical place for the boost was the middle infield. I did not expect Crosby to go down and for Scoot to be an offensive improvement. My bad. But the only person who was making that call was oaktoon. 3) I didn't expect Kendall to have the bestmonth of his career in August.

Now, let me call bullshit on you right now if you were predicting either #2 or #3 to happen.

As for Harden, he's made all of 26 starts in the last two seasons. That is unacceptable. He is having the same oblique problems that have side tracked Tim Hudson for years. That's a problem. I won't have any problem if the A's trade a player they cannot count on for equal or better value talent wise.

If you're going to came after me you better wait until you get healthy, because this isn't even making me work up a sweat.

well...
figgins:
i don't remember what it was exactly and i probably couldn't find it.  so you didn't say he was the MVP (exaggeration on my part), but it was a level of praise for chone figgins that i found quite disturbing.  and of course you did draft him in the first round of the AN fantasy baseball league.

06 a's
angels:
you made it pretty clear that you thought the a's would finish well out of first place.  we'll say that means 3 games even though that's not very much.
what brilliant move would stoneman make that would mean the angels gaining around 10 games on the a's over the last 45 days?
the angels are already 28-19 (.600) in august and september after being stupid enough to stand pat.

scutaro:
scutaro has hit well over the last 1 1/2 months, but his defense is clearly inferior to crosby's, and that has been costly in a few games.

kendall in august/september:
august 01: .337 .396 .525
september 02: .320 .400 .400
august 03: .368 .456 .500
september 03: .364 .373 .424
september 04: .400 .454 .482
september 05: .324 .389 .392
august 06, aka the best month of his career: .358     .402 .425

maybe there's a pattern here...

At least your trying
I drafted Figgins in the 1st round? That's your best shot? I said it 2 minutes after I did it that taking Street in the 6th was my worst mistake. But please, tell me you had something more tangible to go on to brand me in league with John Kruk. Otherwise, this was a pathetic attempt.

And if you'll recall, the standings were much closer at the end of July then they are now. Hell, Colon was still pitching back then but his absence may have been a blessing in disguise for the Angels. The A's and Angels were seperated by, what, 2 games max? You don't think the Angels would be closer than 7 games back if they had added a bat like Lee or Soriano to their line-up? C'mon, you used to be better than that.

I stand corrected on Kendall. August 03 was the best month of his career. How silly of me not to have suspected that 36 months later he'd have the 3rd best month of his career. (Sorry, I'm not going to consider August 01. He hit 5 HR that month, he's hit 4 HR in the last 3 years. The power isn't there for a repeat performance.) But then again, his 358/402/425 of August was a far cry from the 265/350-ish he was posting at the end of July.

Speaking of which, did you happen to notice that one of Kendall's worst months, if not the worst of his entire career, was August 05? 202/268/228. Ouch.

As for Scutaro. The A's have pitching and defense to spare. As July came to a close they were desperate for offense. What, you thought the A's could get something for nothing? Other players picked up their game, which I called but then again most people were expecting it to happen, but Scoot filled the hole that had been Crosby's place in the line-up.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

what?
so are you saying you've never said anything positive about figgins on this site?  just because i can't remember the details doesn't mean it didn't happen.

yes, the standings were close in july.  but the angels are now 7 back despite playing .600 ball since then.  yet you blame stoneman for not making a move.  and then you say i used to be better than that?
if the angels added either lee or soriano (at a very high cost in terms of prospects), how many games closer would they be to the a's?  four or five games behind instead of seven?

the bottom line, as you very well know based on my previous post, is that every year kendall has either a great august, a great september, or both.

And yes, I still think the Angels would be a lot closer in the standings if they had added Soriano or Lee. Worse case scenario they'd be 3-4 games out with 7 head-to-head match-ups. Zito pitching lousy, Blanton pitching lousy and Haren not exactly qualifying for stud status?

And if it wasn't for Loaiza's startling turn around the deficit might have been in the Angels' favor!

what does leyland actually control?  todd jones with an ERA that is bigger than his k/9 as their closer, over zumaya and rodney.

We don't need another oaktoon around here. Leyland's a popular choice because he took a team that was predicted to finish fourth behind Chicago, Minnesota and Cleveland and has them in 1st place on the 22nd of September. Personally, I think whomever wins the Central gets the MOY crown.

But what do you care? You think the award is bogus, which is perfectly fine with me, yet you've spent so much time complaining about it. Makes no sense to me.

But what bothers me is this idea you seem to have that the manager is unimportant. That's just wrong. I think the manager does have an impact on how well a team does. You want to give all the credit elsewhere. Sorry, but I remember one time when everyone's favorite automaton Art Howe made a managerial decision that helped the A's win a road game. So managers do have an impact on the the W-L column in spite of what you may think.

if the 06 tigers were the same as the 05 tigers in terms of personnel and how each player performed, and if every other team was the same as well, we could attribute the improved outcome of the 06 tigers to leyland.

Quit typing, start reading.
All I've said is that the Marlins have played better than anyone expected, they are contending for a playoff spot at least a year before anyone expected, and that the manager has an influence over the performance of his team.

Girardi has helped his young team play well. Yes, his players have talent. But the our very own Bobby Crosby has proven that having talent does not mean being able to play up to that talent. Girardi and his coaching staff deserve credit for that and you refuse to acknowledge their contribution. Excuse me, you'll admit that a pitching coach can help the pitchers, but his boss has no influence on how the pitchers perform.

And by the way, you shouldn't be so quick to heap all the success on their pitching. They've given up 717 runs (understandable considering their youth) while scoring 724. That's 6 more runs than the A's have scored despite Oakland's natural advantage of having a DH.

But I suppose the hitting coach gets all the credit for that.

you said girardi pullled a young team together.  olsen has been involved in two or three fistfights with teammates this year.

one of the marlin's main improvement was pokey reese disappearing so uggla got the second base job.
if girardi kidnapped pokey reese, i'll admit he deserves to be manager of the year.

That wasn't the first time I'd heard positive things about Girardi's handling of the club.

As for Macha
I turned against Macha on June 24th, 2006. And I only remember the date because it's my sister's birthday. He screwed up when he sent Haren back out to face the Giants and the A's ultimately lost the game. His strategic blunder didn't turn me against him, even though the A's lost. His throwing Haren under the bus in a post game interview (partially coupled with an easily avoidable loss IMO) finished him in my book.

Furthermore, Girardi is a popular manager and he has been effective. The Marlins' sudden bounce back after the fire sale proves that to anyone who believes that the manager has an influence on the outcome of his team's play.

This is a phenomenon that has been proven time and again, like when Eric Wedge left Cliff Lee in to face Bobby Kielty with the bases loaded just the other day. Or when Art Howe had T-Long steal 2B against Mike Williams of the Pirates, putting him in position to score the winning run when the batter hit a single.

So there are two examples of a manager having an effect on the outcome of a game, one win and one loss. And since you have already acknowleged that the Marlins have played well, based on both personal performances and team record, than I assume we can put this farce to bed.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

the wedge and howe examples
are actual examples of decisions made by a manager that have had an impact on the game.
and i don't even think one can say that just because a particular managerial decison worked out or not, that it was the correct or incorrect decision, meaning based only on the outcome.

but as far as girardi or leyland are concerned, you have provided no evidence that the teams wouldn't do just as well (or better) with dusty baker or nico's goat as manager.

Evidence?
you've disallowed decision outcome, W-L records and player performance to be introduced as evidence to the contrary. The only thing you've offered up as a means of settling this matter is an impossible situation involving league stasis. Therefore, one can only conclude that the way to change your mind is through bribery, and neither Leyland or Girardi are going to concern themselves with that method.

So sit there in your unassailable belief. But know this. Any arguement or position that cannot be tested for accuracy is considered inherently false. The burden of proof is on you from here on out. You are in the minority here. It is your position that flies in the face on Conventional Wisdom. Funny thing about CW, it's not always wrong. But if you want to challenge the system be my guest. Baker had a rep as being a killer of pitchers when he was in SF. Having the best player on the planet (Mr. Barry Bonds) helped to cover for his mistakes. When Dusty went to a team that was built around its starting rotation and not its line-up the destruction of Wood and Prior was easily foretold.

But that's not what is happening in Florida, is it? You're own link says otherwise. They're trying to build a case to fire him because of his on field decisions. Kinda like...
folks were wrong who disagreed with you that the A's season was done and the team needed to be blown up at the trade deadline?  You have a lot of insightful things to say, but don't think you have any basis to tell someone else flatly that they're wrong.

A baseball manager so no influence on the outcome of a baseball game?

No, I don't agree with that.
I think a manager does have influence, just pointing out that you, yourself, can be wrong from time to time despite your assertions to the contrary.

Point is, today, on this topic, I'm not wrong. You said so yourself! Tomorrow, on another topic... that might not be the case.

Professionalism, maybe?
Beane wanted to can Art Howe until Matt Stairs and Jason Giambi walked into his office and talked him out of it. I'd say the relationship between Beane and Howe must not have been that great if the GM wanted to let his manager walk away.

Didn't affect the team's performance much, did it?

I'll say it again. If the Marlins want to can Girardi for personal reasons so be it. But this bullshit about trying to justify their action based on Girardi's performance as manager is just that... bullshit.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

by grover on Sep 22, 2006 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure it's bullshit,
but the Marlins are also hinting at least, that Girardi's firing IS for personal reasons.

Again, if you believe the articles, Girardi barely speaks to Beinfest. This goes beyond "not great".

I just disagree with the portrayal by some people of Girardi as a saint who walks on water.

Look, the situation the Marlins are in is lousy; whatever they do, they're <censored>.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

by rfloh on Sep 22, 2006 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, if I suggested sainthood
I apologize.

All I'm saying, and your article describes what is happening, is that the Marlins trying to defend this impending firing by pointing to Girardi's performance on the field is ridiculous. It is not based on any sort of logic that I or most people would recognize. Taking a $15 million dollar roster with 20+ rookies and having them compete for the playoffs is the stuff movies are made about.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

by grover on Sep 22, 2006 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I don't follow the Marlins
But I have to agree with you.  Just looking at the end result (which I know, doesn't paint the whole picture), I'd be ecstatic seeing my team breaking even and giving the Wild Card race a go on a paltry 15 mill payroll and a roster consisting mostly of rookies.  I mean geez, what more could you expect?

Some team is going to be sorry
after they sign Zito to a very large contract.  They are going to pay for a top line pitcher and find they got a 3rd starter instead.  A guy who walks almost as many as he strikes out, and gives up a lot of HR's is not a front line pitcher.  It is true that during the course of a season he will pitch a lights out game, his curve befuddling the opposition, but there are just as many games where he is struggling to get through 6 innings.  If he is smart and goes to SD he has a chance to be successful with a spacious park, NL hitters and a pitcher hitting every 3 innings but if he goes back to the AL, some team is going to get stung real bad.
He has also logged many games, never missing a start, that may not last, that is an unknown at this point.

Carroll on Harden:
The A's limp in to the playoffs a bit, though Rich Harden had to make A's fans feel better about their chances. I watched a half-inning of the game over Brian Kenny's shoulder, discussing how Harden had hurt Kenny's fantasy team after he'd made him a high pick. I saw one pitch and instantly reacted with "he's fine." His mechanics looked solid, if a bit off balance, but he certainly had all his velocity, living in the mid-90s and showing a couple pitches that touched 98 on the TV gun. It was tough to see movement, but sources tell me that he looked "perfect ... same old Harden." Whatever the A's did with him has worked, at least in the short term.

The news isn't so good for Bobby Crosby. The shortstop hasn't made much progress and is likely out for the season. The A's are also watching Eric Chavez closely. He's having more problems with the hamstring that has plagued him all season long. He's out for the weekend, at least, and will be re-evaluated next week.

I heard that too
I was at the game yesterday sitting in sect 123, row 1 just behind the Field Boxes.  Overheard a guy talking to the Field Box servers say that a friend of his daughter who was a camera person had a date with Swisher.

Harden on BBTN
Since (it seems) nobody else posted it, here is what Rich said on BBTN last night (text is not verbatim):

Ravitch: What were your biggest concerns going into the game?

Rich: My biggest concern was how my off-speed pitches feel. My fast ball has been feeling great lately. I didn't know how my arm would feel throwing my change and my split, because that's the pitch I hurt myself on. I felt good throwing that pitch, and that's why it's definitely positive today.

Ravitch: How's your head? Are you confident now that you can go forward?

Rich: Yeah it definitely helped today. I threw my change and my split and I was pain-free. I threw my FB and had some good velocity. A lot of it is in the head getting over that mental hump, having that confidence in your arm again and letting it go. It's too easy to change your mechanics, do things like that ... it felt great.

A lot of people asked if I was nervous, and it wasn't about how I was going to pitch again, it was how my elbow is going to feel. My elbow felt the best it has in a year, year and a half.

*******

Rich also said that he threw a splitter yesterday, in the bullpen before the game, for the first time since before he hurt his elbow. That must have been a nerve-racking moment.

On the radio, somebody (I think it was Vince Cotroneo) said that Curt Young holds his breath every time Rich throws a slider. If that's the case, how's about we not have Rich throw a slider until further notice?

by Checkswing HR on Sep 22, 2006 1:12 PM PDT reply actions

I really really don't understand that
Hey, we're going to rehab you for months and then throw you into a high stress enviroment where you will throw off-speed and splitters, only the exact motions that shredded your seven figure arm recently, and we have NO IDEA IF YOU WILL DIE because we didn't try those pitches during rehab.

WTF?!!

by Apricot on Sep 22, 2006 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Neither do I
You would think that the A's trainers / coaches would want to raise the intensity of Harden's work slowly, just as they want to raise the volume (# of pitches) slowly.
On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

by CyZito on Sep 22, 2006 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

There is HOPE!!!
OK, I found this to be very comforting!
Harden, who says he has spent "a lot of time sitting around thinking about everything," including his body's apparent frailty, adds he has been mulling a dramatic change in his conditioning routine. More stretching and less weight work. More emphasis on getting through the season and less stress on assorted body parts. More or less, an approach he hopes would radically alter the course of his past two seasons.

PLEASE RICH, DO IT!!!

My sentiments exactly.
I'm shocked and impressed that he's even thinking about it, given his previous reactions to Urban's (and others') suggestions that he do so.

What's next, Crosby re-evaluating his fanatical devotion to his swing?

Big Hurt 's big comeback
is #10 of John Donovan's Top 10 stories of the season:

"10. The Big Hurt: After an acrimonious departure from Chicago, and three years removed from his last healthy season, the A's took a chance on Frank Thomas. The big DH has responded with 38 homers, 107 RBIs in what will probably earn him the AL's Comeback Player of the Year."
