Unpopular Opinions

We're A's fans. We cheer alike. We boo alike. We throw chairs alike. I'd be willing to bet, though, that there's an issue for each of us that strays from a popular AN opinion and that's what I am interested in.

I'm curious. In what areas are you a member of a minority (or even solo) opinion? Do you like Macha? Think we should bunt more often? Are you not heartbroken about Zito's upcoming departure?

Spill. I promise that tarring and feathering will be kept to a minimum.

Star-divide

Here are mine:

1.) I like Derek Jeter. In fact, I like most of the Yankees. And of the few Yankees I dislike, two of them are former A's.

2.) I would like to steal more bases, especially on catcher's with poor percentages. I had hoped to do more running on Victor Martinez.

3.) Zito's departure is going to affect me a whole lot less than that of Hudson or Mulder.

I think situations DO matter
to a player's performance.

 * With good coaching, players can learn and get better, and exceed their previous career means.

 * With a suitable environment, players can play at the top of their capabilities, rather than in the middle or at the bottom.  I think, for example, that if Jermaine Dye weren't getting the "you must be patient and walk" message drilled into his head, he'd have been a much better player his final year in Oakland.

 * I think that with more playing time, Antonio Perez would be a much better hitter.  Not true of Ginter.

 * A-Rod has not been as clutch as Jeter in his career.  I think there's a difference between a home run when your team's up 6-1 in the 8th vs. down 3-2 in the 9th.  The situation is different, the crowd is acting differently, the adrenaline is flowing -- can a player transcend all that and perform anyway?  Jeter has shown he can.  The Hurt has shown that he can.  A few players are naturals at this (I can't even think of any) but most have to learn how.  This is where the "veteran presence" matters.  Anyway....I do believe that most players freak out when a big hit is needed, and that reduces their ability to produce said big hit.  And I think A-Rod will learn how but hasn't yet.

As an aside, I think Street is going to be REALLY good next year.  He's a kid, he's willing to learn, he's got great stuff and a great attitude.

My unpopular/controversial opinions
  1. I like Dan Johnson, and I think he can still be a productive player.
  2. Where the A's play their home games means little to me.
  3. I like Darin Erstad, even if he is an Angel.
  4. I don't have a problem with Macha's laid back style.
  5. I'm not a big fan of Adam Melhuse.
  6. I don't believe there is such a thing as trolling.
  7. I don't have blind faith in Billy Beane.
  8. I'm not going to miss Zito that much. I still miss Hudson.
  9. I think Lew Wollf has been a good owner so far.
  10. I never liked Jose Canseco.
  11. I respect comprehensive statistics and metrics more than scouts.
  12. I think Joe Buck is a decent broadcaster.
  13. I rarely read Nico's game summaries. Sorry Nico, I don't mean you any harm, it's just that I'm not often interested in them. They're often too cutesy.
  14. No offense, but I was never that impressed with Bill King. He was good, but not fantastic.
  15. I'm hungry. Wait, no, that's not an unpopular opinion, I'm just hungry...

my opinion of Joe Buck
is largely based on my recollection of his call of Big Mac's #62 in 1998. I was really sick that day, and my dad brought a small black and white TV into my bedroom so I could watch the game. (Even though he was a Cardinal by then, McGwire was my favorite player growing up.)

I was 13 at the time, and the home run, combined with Buck's enthusiasm, really stuck with me.

So that's why I don't hate on Joe Buck, even though he probably deserves it.

Remember, this is unpopular opinions, not "unpopular theories backed up by solid evidence".

by BleacherDave on Sep 21, 2006 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh yeah,
Bill King was a Raider broadcaster, first and foremost.  He may have been the best football broadcaster there ever was - and I'm not even a football fan.  He was one of the best at basketball, too.  He was ok at baseball, but never in the same category as, say Dave Niehaus (who to me is the best of 'em all).  In his last few years, he wasn't as good as Korach and definitely on the downhill slide.  His stories and vocabulary were still great, but his game calling was deteriorating.  Regardless, he was gem for his breadth of knowledge, play-by-play, versatility and quirkiness.

by iceplant on Sep 22, 2006 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Dave Niehaus
is the sh!tt!est baseball broadcaster I've ever heard.  He's not that articulate, he can be a blatant homer, and his voice doesn't ring like song.  Ken Kourac's voice is musical (albeit a bit monotone).  Bill King's was like midwestern Shakespeare.  Dave Niehaus is like a boisterous stockbroker sitting at the barstool next to you that makes you want to leave the tavern.

Here goes,
  1. I'm not a Yankees fan, but they have some of the classiest coaches and players the game has ever seen. I root for them to beat the Red Sox, because everything you can say about NY's dignity and class goes out the window when you talk about Boston.
  2. I think Barry Zito is WAY over-rated.  Solid pitcher -- great career here -- played "every day,"-- too laid back for my taste, won't miss him when he's gone.
  3. I think T. Long gets a bad rap -- always played hard (wherever they moved him,) and made some great plays for us.  Yeah, he spoke his mind a couple times (just like Payton, Bradley, Byrnes, etc.) but all in all, I thought he played his ass off for Oakland and received very little credit for it.

With regards to T.Long
The reason he never got any credit was because he sucked ass. Big time. Like BIG time.

I seriously cannot illustrate how much ass Terrence Long sucked.

Like think if at the beginning of this year Chavez had gotten hurt and then Perez had started the whole year, performing like he has.

Then we'd be sorta talking about Terrence Long.

T. Long played every outfield position and only had trouble in CF.
He wasn't a true leadoff hitter.
He had the only hit that gave us a chance to score when Jeremy.... you know...

He should have been rookie of the year if it wasn't for a 36 year old guy in Seattle

He gave me a baseball at an Angel game.

Totally agree with #1
I can't stand the Yankees, but my revulsion for the Red Sox exceeds everything I've experienced in sports.  Beginning with Schilling, their players largely lack class and the worst 10-15% of their fans totally lack class.  I can usually barely enjoy a game when sitting near them because of their constant barrage of insults to A's fans and players.

The Yankees and Red Sox are the same.  They are 1 & 2 in terms of payroll.  The Red Sox are NO underdog, and the fact that everyone is supposed to feel sorry for them is bullshit.  The Yankees players and their fans at least have class, which is why I always root for the Yanks over the Sox unless the outcome would otherwise help the A's.

I won't cheer for Esteban Loaiza.  I don't applaud his introduction, or his departure after a good start, or any strike he throws unless the batter swung at it & missed/fouled.  He gets enough loud love from the rest of the crowd, I'm sure he doesn't miss having it from me.

he never rests guys enough or play the reserves enough.  I will not miss Zito, he is not a #1 starter despite the fact I once thought he would be, his walks and K's are almost equal which bodes poorly for him if he leaves the pitcher friendly Coliseum.  He might do all right in the NL if he goes to Petco which is where I expect him to go.

Not sure I understand, but
(i) Grady Little was showing 4 fingers as Dye approached the plate, presumably intending to load the bases for the DP.

(ii) Melhuse could then have batted for Singleton (although in reality Melhuse struck out and Singleton walked).

Either way, loading the bases with 1 out puts a lot more pressure on the pitcher that having first open, and if any team is going to win by walking home the tying run in the bottom of the 9th its the A's.

A little painful, and a little fun
  1. I think Macha is a good manager, and about 10 times smarter than most of the people who call him dumb.
  2. I don't care much about the batting order, because I know it hardly matters at all.
  3. I still don't like Jason Kendall, and previous point notwithstanding, think he should bat 8th or 9th.
  4. I think Ginter and Perez would both still suck no matter how much playing time they got.
  5. I think Tejada choked in the playoffs worse than Chavez, and, though he was a very good player, I don't miss his supposed leadership at all. (More brains and less "heart" and we get past the Red Sox. Ditto Byrnes.)
  6. I see no reason to believe that Larry Davis or the rest of the medical staff is incompetent.

I don't have a visceral dislike of the Angels. I almost always root against them because they are a division rival, but I dislike the Giants, Yankees and Red Sox much, much more than the Angels. I'm not saying I'd be a fan if they were in another division -- I'd probably not pay them any attention at all -- but I really don't hate the team overall.

  4. Bud Selig made a mistake tying the All-Star game to the WS.

  6. Swisher IS the next Giambi.
  7. The A's will be in Fremont by 2011.

I have one that's tied to that...
That All-Star Game tie was no big deal.  And it was just bad luck for Selig that he got blistered for it.  All-Star Games were all about getting everyone in the game more than winning it for over 20 years, and it was only a matter of time before an extra inning All-Star Game would become a tie because no pitchers were left.  It could've happened to Fay Vincent, A. Bartlett Giamatti, even Peter Uberroth -- but Selig was the unfortunate one to have to call it.

But yeah, tying the All-Star Game to home-field advantage in the World Series is stupid.

Well..
I don't really know how popular or unpopular most of these sentiments are, since when people really start going haywire on certain things I just phase out, but:
  1. I like players for very intangible reasons that * gasp * aren't numerically quantifiable
  2. Umm, they closed the upper deck. Buy a bleacher ticket and shut the hell up.
  3. I think the A's should stay in Oakland, because Oakland is where they belong.
  4. I don't totally trust Lew Wolff, but I like that he is visible and present at most of the games and gets all excited. However, I expect some terrible shoe to drop that will make me hate him.
  5. The thing I like most about the Coliseum is the parking lot. Tailgate! The rest is definitely ugly.
  6. I don't get Rev apologists AT ALL. He's crass and an asshole.
  7. I've met some (read SOME) of the left field bleacher people, and had some unfortunate conversations with them, which made it clear to me they suffer under the delusion that they own the Coliseum and are best friends with all the players. I want to shake them and say "is this what it takes to make you feel important?"
That is all.

  • I like Loaiza better after his DUI and "rebirth" than I ever did before.
  • I wish some of our guys were on roids still. We look like a little league team compared to some others. I just don't want to know.
  • I bet Wash would be a shitty manager.
  • People that don't know anything about baseball, and post things reflecting that....I think I'm a better person than they are.
  • I believe I've "earned" an A's championship more than people who became fans after 2000. we're talking a lot of painful seasons, here.
  • It makes me sick that we play in a 1/3 full stadium every night during a pennant race, and while the A's inevitable move one day will hurt me like I lost a loved one....it'll be tough to blame the owner that finally pulls the trigger.
  • I believe all my exes made the biggest mistake of their lives A) getting involved w/ me and B) ever wanting it to end.
  • There are a lot of people at A's games that I wouldn't want near my kids, if I had kids or knew the names of the ones I probably do have.
  • The most fun I've ever had at A's games are being nearly blacked out and mercilessly heckling fans wearing opposing teams' shirts. I save this for special occasions.
Whew...that felt really good. How much do I owe you?

Why not?
  1. It drives me crazy that people actually say they would stop attending A's games if they left Oakland but stayed in the East Bay.
  2. I'm not sure there's another manager I'd rather have than Ken Macha; he's perfect for this team and GM
  3. I really trust statistical analysis, but love the fact that it's still chastised.
  4. If everyone embraced statistical analysis, I'd probably love "Old-school scouts."
  5. I believe Barry Zito either purposefully set up Mychael Urban on the Milton Bradley thing, asked Urban to do the team a favor by calling Bradley out just to light a spark or Zito is just an ass and doesn't like Bradley. In any case, I GUARANTEE Zito was Urban's source and doesn't really care where he plays next year as long as he gets paid.
  6. My trust in Billy Beane goes well beyond anything rational. I used to be more worried about losing him than any free agent.
  7. Evil is actually a psycological disorder, not a trait of an entire people/country/team.
  8. I don't "get" fan sites like AN, yet find myself reading it almost everyday.
  9. I still feel kind of guilty about liking the A's because I started rooting for them in 1987, although I can't believe how much 1994-1998 put me in a permanent "I just want to finish about .500" state of mind.

Unpopular Opinions
  1. The Red Sox are far and away my favorite team in the AL East.
  2. I have no strong feelings -- positive or negative -- about the S.F. Giants.
  3. Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler are the finest broadcast team in baseball, nay, in all sport's broadcasting history.
  4. The green tops are teh suck, as are most colored tops in baseball. Give me white at home, grey on the road any day!
  5. Although I've gone back and forth on this one over the years, I sometimes think there's a good case to be made that baseball is better without the DH (though with Frank around this year, that case seems substantially weaker...)
  6. The wildcard stinks.  Teams should have to win a division to make the playoffs. Though I was perfectly happy with two divisions per league and one round of playoffs, I'd prefer four divisions per league and no wild card to the system we have now.
  7. While we're on the subject of playoffs, teams should not be eliminated on the basis of five-game series.  Give me seven games in each round (however many rounds there are....see #6).
  8. Interleague play is terrible for baseball.
  9. Okay, I don't really believe #3.  At all.

Great topic
but too bad so many people are wimping out and giving "unpopular" opinions that really aren't unpopular at all.  "I like Macha" or "Crosby is/isn't any good" ... ooh, that's so controversial.

Anyway, to get people fired up again, here's my two really unpopular opinions:

  1. I like Mike Scioscia, and I think he's a good manager, too.
  2. Nine times out of ten, I'd rather watch the game on TV than at the stadium.
And a few other semi-unpopular opinions:
  1. I like Joe Morgan. Yes, he's clueless on some analytical details, but I don't care. For a TV announcer, he's fun to listen to. (But his partner is even better.)
  2. I too prefer KenKo to Bill King (though I liked King, too).
  3. I always root for the AL West team in the playoffs, which means I was rooting for the Angels the past two years.
  4. I don't like Jason Kendall.  I think he's a good, smart player, but that whole old-school tough-guy thing is a big turn-off for me.
  5. I think the A's should have brought up Hiram Bocachica mid-season (as soon as he was healthy) and given him plenty of starts.

Sciosia... when you have to watch him daily living in Southern California, you will know how awful he is. Especially at the Ken-doll Brawl game in the stands. Kendall, who i cringe everytime he comes to bat with a runner on 1st and 1 out, still will always be better than Adam Melhuse at everything except hitting a HR and Staying out of inning ending DPs. Look at the ERA comparison with Melhuse and Kendall.

I disklike the 'unwritten rules' of baseball.
Why the heck SHOULDN'T you steal on a guy with a ten-run lead?

Why shouldn't you pad your stats if the other team can't get it's act together?

Why not bunt to beat out a no-hitter?

Why not bust a double into a triple in a blow-out ninth?

Don't talk to me about 'poor sportsmanship' - the game isn't over until it's over (as the Dodgers showed a few nights ago), so it should be played full bore until that 54th out is registered.

Oh, and I would have walked the Little League stud to get to the cancer kid too. It's baseball - play the game, or stay at home.

  • Mark Ellis is not starting calibur for a competitive team like ours UNLESS we have the power from the corner infielders to compensate, which we DO NOT.  Drop Ellis this offseason.
  • I think DUI Steve was worth the $21MM
  • When Macha was searching for a job this offseason, I wanted Larry Bowa to become the new manager SO BADLY
  • The A's will not stay in Oakland
  • I think Rickey Henderson would have been a better starting CF for us this year than Mr. Kotsay

My 2 cents:
  1.  I trust Lew.
  2.  LAAAAAAA will vastly improve their offense making them the team to beat for years to come.
  3.  Relocating to San Jose will make business sense in the long run - even if we have to pay through the nose for the rights.
  4.  We should lock up the Duke, and trade Street for a couple of stud prospects (ie starters!)
Note to joshers:  Zito is a free agent, and refer to today's game regarding Kendall.

Oh well....
  1.  Get Rev Halofan away from Nowhere Heaven and he's fairly well-mannered.  He can even have generous comments when he is not channeling his inner David Duke.
  2.  Zito's departure will hurt the A's more than Muldur or Hudson -- neither of whom was getting more reliable as they aged -- does anyone really think they would have been different if they'd stayed?  We need starters who start and start and start.
  3.  Billy's biggest challenge in the off-season is to revamp the A's fitness program so the players are fit, stay fit, and don't snap easily.
  4.  The only productive reason to bunt and/or steal is when a run will make all the difference, regardless of the cost.  The only other times players should do it is to stay in practice.  Never give away an out that could matter to the outcome of the game.
  5.  If Ellis and Crosby can't stay healthy, they have to go.  Key position players who are young have to be playing their positions most if not all of the time.  Days off are for old guys, like the BH.
  6.  I'd like to see the Duke be given a chance as starter, or as closer.
  7.  Using Street strictly in the 9th is a waste of a great talent.  How about turning him into a stopper, rather than a closer.  The most important guy in the BP is the guy you call on to come in in middle innings when the game is on the line, the tying, winning run is on base, and he has no leeway to make mistakes or take a few pitches to get into his rhythm.  Its time for the As to redefine what is key in relief pitching.
  8.  Be thankful you don't sit in the skyboxes -- its sterile, removed from the action, and the food is the absolute worst.
  9.  After we clinch this weekend, let's bring Rickey back for a one-week final fling.

This is the 2nd time today...
...I've seen Ellis being referred to as "not staying healthy" or "fragile."

He tore up a shoulder badly 2.5 years ago on a freak play, and the fact that he was able to get back to 100% says a hell of a lot about his strength, not fragility.  Last year he was completely healthy.  This year he broke a thumb while sliding into 2nd, and missed one month while it healed.

Where are the health concerns?

somewhat unpopular
  1. I prefer smallball and NL baseball. But I follow the A's too closely to watch NL baseball at all.
  2. I want the Giants to do well (but not at the A's expense).
  3.  I don't trust Zito.
  4. Part of me feels like baseball before Jackie Robinson doesn't count. All baseball before the split-finger should have an asterisk by it.
  5. I don't care what the A's did in Philadelphia or KC.
  6. TV is the best way to actually watch the baseball in a baseball game. Watching live is good for sheer energy and joy and bonding with other fans, but you miss 95% of the game without a closeup of the strike zone and instant replay.
  7. I would probably dislike a significant number of the A's if I knew them personally. I try to compartmentalize that away from affecting my fanhood.

I'd likely be a little upset that I couldn't get the same thing I did in the past, but I wouldn't treat it as if it was some kind of right I was being deprived of. No personal offense, but there seems to be some kind of entitlement complex among some A's fans.

I'd liken it to this: I liked getting gas for under $1.50 all the time. It was nice. When gas prices rose, I didn't like it, but I didn't act like I had some kind of right to pay what I wanted to for it. If a business decides to charge more for something, regardless of the reason, that's their perogative. I can choose to vote with my wallet and ride a bike or motorcycle, just as I could choose to watch more games on TV instead of going to the park.

And... that's enough pseudo-politics for now. And yes, I realize my analogy isn't perfect, and there are more factors than I acknowledge.

  3. When the A's are playing the O's, I'm torn as to who I want to win.
  4. I would rather have the A's get swept in the first round of the playoffs than lose in Game 5 again.
  5. I think our playoff teams of 2000-2001 were tainted because Giambi was on steroids.
  6. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that many of our current players (as well as most MLB players) are also on steroids.
  7. I moved to the Bay Area in 1998, and don't really identify at all with A's players from previous years.

My unpopular opinions...
  1. I think Billy Beane had a tendency to write bad contracts for people that he evaluated highly, many times at higher than the market value others would have paid (i.e: Jermaine after the injury, that made no sense. Scott Hatteberg.)
  2. I think the basic statistical analysis doesn't properly account for the difference and relative value of the same performance against different competition.
  3. I hate the way Macha doesn't keep his bench fresh, I think he should take a lesson from Dusty on this. (on the other hand, I usually like the way he uses pitchers.
  4. I wish Graham Koonce had gotten a decent shot.
  5. I didn't like the trade for Bobby Kielty, I would have rather kept Ted Lilly
  6. Why didn't we keep Aaron Harang?
  7. Steals are better than we think, especially in close games (against good pitching staffs)
  8. I resent the weak back of the roster for the last several years (its better this year)
  9. I hated the Eric Karros signing
  10. I thought Art Howe ruined TLong by honoring his consecutive games streak.
  11. The Mark Redman signing.

by connie mack on Sep 21, 2006 5:50 PM PDT reply actions

Unpopular Opinions, Mostly
  1.  I think Jon Miller sucks on the radio.  For example, on MOST pitches he describes not what happens but rather pitch selection.  "Here's the pitch ... CURVE BALL!"  And he is too critical of the Giants.  It's not as if he ever faced 95 mph pitching.  He always gets on the Giants for swinging at bad pitches.  Hey, John, it ain't that easy!  The Giants aren't a very good club, but they aren't really bad, either.  In fact, their starting pitching 1 through 5 is pretty damn good.
  2.  I don't like our new announcer either, and he isn't getting better.  I went to the bathroom at the game last night when it was tight and Vince said, with sad intonation, "A swiiiing and a ..."  So I concluded "strike out."  Damn!  The A's were really struggling last night and every out counted ... "... a fool tip" Vince then said, in a happy tone.  Oh, good, I thought, he's still alive.  Nope:  "Held onto by Martinez..."  For crying out loud.  There's no way to know on any real time basis what's happening.  When he does play by play you have to listen carefully to the crowd to know whether something good or bad is happening.
  3.  I love the Coliseum, but the new negative for me there is the incessant highlights of prior games at nightclub volume.  Shut up, already.  I didn't come to the game to stare at a blaring TV set.  Same with dot racing, same with the hidden ice cream under the hat.  Just shut up so I can enjoy the ambience and maybe even have a conversation with the person sitting next to me.
  4.  Zito is a good pitcher, but not by much.  He seldom pitches well against teams that can hit.  He'll go to San Diego to protect his ERA, but if he played half his games in Fenway his ERA would be over 5.  Also with Zito:  is he the only guy who doesn't realize that "wasting" a pitch with an 0-2 count means you're supposed to get within 6 inches of the plate so the batter at least things of swinging?  How many Zito 0-2 counts end up full?
  5.  Mark Ellis is the A's best everyday player.  Hands down.
  6.  Robert Buan (or however you spell it) is just awful.  You simply can't listen to the guy for more than 5 minutes without getting a headache.
7  The A's radio station is a joke.  Open source radio?  How about a broadcast signal I can hear clearly in Walnut Creek?  And they need more sponsors:  if I hear that Chevron/Shed Shop/Bay Alarm/Cold Beer combo one more time ... well, I can't finish the sentence, because I'll hear it 20 more times.
  1.  Duke right now ... With the A's up by 1 run in the 8th inning of a post-season game, how many want to see Street get the ball in the 8th versus having Duke try to get 6 outs?  Not me.  Duke just looks so much better out there.
  2.  I know his numbers are awful, but I still miss Huddy.  And I don't miss Miggy ... as bad as Chavvy is in the clutch, Miggy was no better.  Yeah, I know he won those big games in August ... but he sure as heck didn't win any in October.
  3.  Loved the grand slam, but Kielty's red hair doesn't excite me.  Does everybody have to go crazy every time he gets a big hit?  It's like he's never supposed to get a big hit with his skills, right?
  4.  Hardly an unpopular opinion, but ... Roy Steele is awesome, and that woman they've got in San Francisco is the worst public address announcer I've ever heard ... with the possible exception of the awful woman she replaced.

I think your #3 was the "popular" opinion on AN when Urban's Examiner column came out.

My unpopular opinion is that Urban's column, while I thought it was poorly written because he was so vague about the source(s) of his information, was based on an honest opinion that probably accurately reflected the thoughts of several individuals in the A's clubhouse at the time (just after the ASB, I believe).

Milton has an occasional bad moment (there's a whole diary about something that happened a couple nights ago), and I think the doubts about him in mid-July were legitimate, but I also think his relationship with his teammates and his deportment with umpires has been outstanding over the last couple of months.  I doubt that Urban would write the same column today.

"big market teams deserve more $"
okay, a general response to this opinion repeated several times.

The reason it's not fair is that the MLB controls entry into the market. Let's see the Yankees (and Mets!) earn their money against a third or fourth NY team. Let's see Boston earn their New England bucks against a local team.

If a market is that much bigger, we should allow more teams in that region. That alone would eventually even the playing field.  In fact, I personally would welcome a reorg of baseball into a Premier League (AL and NL) and relegation of two teams a year down to AAA.  The way things are now are just unfair.  But the MLB will never do it because it's all about the guaranteed bucks in a controlled market where the owners can split the proceeds. Americans are so used to this kind of imbalance that we just take it and the fan base slowly dwindles. Kind of the way we tolerate the pathetic choices at election day. </rant>

Completely valid point
I think that baseball should put a team in north jersey at the very least. However, that doesn't change the fact that some teams have fan bases dissproportionate to the size of their cities.  For example, St Louis has a population of only 350 000, but they have devoted fans and a large payroll.

Even if you look at revenue/(market size), I don't think the A's are doing that well.

St. Louis
...is like Atlanta, Detroit, well, Oakland...the list goes on...all of these cities are overall declining both economically and population-wise, within the actual city limits, but the metro areas are retaining or even gaining people...they're still thriving.  So all the professional sports teams' fanbases from these cities are like 99% suburban...most notably for the Cardinals and Red Wings.  Detroit, Hockeytown?  Heh, not quite.  Maybe Sterling Heights, Mich, Canton, Mich (a couple of the larger suburbs...the arena is located in Auburn Heights, so maybe that could technically be "Hockeytown") or Windsor, Ontario across the border, but definitely not a city that is about 80% black...I mean, that's the last sport the residents of Detroit care about.

Somewhat controversial to make some racial implications about fandom, I guess, but hey, it's the unpopular opinions thread...and I think this is more of a potentially unpopular fact.

I take your general point.

St. Louis is a weird case because historically it had a long stretch of time when it was THE team in the west, so they drew a lot of fans from a huge region. I don't think a new StL team could gain such devoted fans.

English / European soccer
In English and European soccer, teams for the most part go the Giants route when it comes to stadium. They build their own with private financing. Do you think a city that just built a new stadium with public money will be happy to see the local team relegated?

Furthermore, it is VERY difficult to move a team in European soccer, unlike in American sports, which means teams can't hold their cities hostage.

Things in baseball may well be "unfair"; but the European soccer system is even more "unfair". European soccer is run on a complete free market system. No drafts. No "service time". No arbitration. No luxury tax. No trades. If a team wants to acquire a player, it buys out his contract, then negotiates a new one with him. In the English Premier League, a team like the A's ultimate goal would be to finish 4th, qualifying for the European Champions League, which is a huge moneyspinner. Only the biggest, richest teams like Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal can realistically target the title.

As for introducing new teams into the big markets,  this is going to get me flamed, but what makes you think the new Boston team will not receive even less support than the A's relative to the Giants? If you introduce new teams at the same time as a promotion / relegation system, there is a very strong chance that the new  teams would be relegated.

What makes you think that another New York team would steal a significant / noticeable amount of fans from the Yankees? I'm also a Mets fan, besides being one of the A's; and I certainly have never liked the Yankees.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

by rfloh on Sep 22, 2006 12:24 AM PDT up reply actions

good points
Why would you get flamed for your arguments?  You responded very rationally to my off-the-cuff ramble.

You make a convincing case that European football is not an ideal to aspire to, particularly due to their lack of market controls.  I am not against the draft, free agency, etc, at all... you'll have to talk to LoeCountryJoe.  But the relegation system does not sound like a major contributing factor to the inequities.

You are right that expansion teams would certainly be relegated very quickly, so you would have to give them some window of time to be exempt from that.

A new New England team would surely NOT be a popular as the Red Sox, but I believe it WOULD drain their fan base in the medium term.  I haven't conducted market research, but I recall from the A's New Ballpark blog, they did a great study of market sizes, and basically, the market does get divided up as you'd expect when there are multiple teams compared to a single team (and the punchline was that the SF area was the smallest two-team market). Usually one team does better, but the other team can do well if there's enough pie to divide. I can't prove putting a third team will divide the market, but I think the experience in other markets is that it often does. (cf. Aussie Rules Football, where there are more teams in the city of Melbourne than in the whole rest of the country combined)

By the way, growing up in NY, I preferred the Mets to the Yanks (although it was bittersweet that it took a bunch of brilliant cokeheads to win the WS in the 80s) too.

by Apricot on Sep 22, 2006 11:29 AM PDT up reply actions

I was afraid of getting
flamed for comparing the A's to the Giants :)

I'm apologise in advance for the long post that follows.

The thing with the relegation system is that smaller / poorer teams are usually the ones that are perenenially involved in relegation dogfights. It isn't just that they will get relegated that is the problem; that they MIGHT get relegated is actually bigger. A "small" team in the English Premier League, like say Sheffield United, who were just promoted, who are last now, and who actually have a decent fanbase, cannot pull a "Marlins". The difference in revenue for a Premier League and Championship(the level below the Premier League) team is HUGE. Thus a small team has to spend some money on possibly mediocre ageing proven veterans. While this is slightly hyperbolic, for small teams, the goal at the start of the season is to finish 4th from bottom (last 3 are relegated); anything else is a bonus.

Furthermore, teams build their own stadiums with their own money. Arsenal, one the biggest, most succesful, most respected and most admired teams in the Premier League, have just taken on a huge amount of debt for their gorgeous new stadium. I don't believe any American city is going to like building a team a new stadium, and then seeing the team relegated.

Don't get me wrong there are actually very many things about the European football system that I like, I just believe that most American sports fans, owners, will not share my liking.

I agree that over the long term, more teams in the big markets would help, leaving aside that I like choice, I just believe that it's not a panacea.

Having had to deal with Kazmir for Zambrano, Mo Vaughn, Roberto Alomar changing from a 1st ballot HOFamer to a replacement player overnight, nothing that the Mets do can really dissappoint me anymore.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

opinions, mostly unpopular
  1. Bill King was overrated, but Lon Simmons was just plain awful. Monte Moore was a homer, but was more enjoyable to listen to.
  2. The A's were remiss in allowing a certain well-known employee to drink on the job. (If I say any more, this opinion will be TOO unpopular).
  3. Zito will be ineffective in two years time and never be an good starter again.
  4. Billy Beane's arrogance will become a problem for the A's, and isn't warranted because he basically just took over Sandy Alderson's system.
  5. The A's lack of fan base stems from perceptions  of Oakland more than the Giants' seniority, and the team can only catch up to the Giants in support if it moves to the San Jose area.

by vk on Sep 21, 2006 8:10 PM PDT reply actions

my unpopular take on #5
The A's small fan base has virtually nothing to do with Oakland per se, or even with baseball fans and/or East Bay residents themselves.

The A's small fan base is 99% due to years of neglect by Schott and Hoffman, and intentional undermarketing by Wolffisher.

  4. I had a lot of sympathy for oaktoon in his AN death throes. I heard a sadly honest and human desire to just be understood in some of those final posts.
  5. I wish A's fans were more like Raider fans when we play the Red Sox. I actively taunt, mock, and verbally assault them, but often feel alone doing it.
  6. I always want the Yankees to crush the Red Sox.
  7. Anybody who is anti-DH is a moron. National League baseball is awful because of the lack of any tension once you get to the bottom of the order. In AL baseball there is always a genuine fear that the other team might score.
  8. AN's front page writers are too tepid: Don't start Harden; don't jinx our chances by saying the division is won; don't rip the team. (That said, I'm a huge fan of AN's front page writers.)
  9. Bitter fans in game threads are okay, even welcome. Go ahead and get pissed. It's cathartic--for you and me.
  10. The East Bay doesn't deserve the A's. Move closer to me in San Jose. How do you people not buy more tickets for a team that is so good, so likeable, and so entertaining over the last eight years? I have never understood it.
Bonus non-unpopular opinion:

From the talk about his kid, to the shilling for Amici's, to the unnecessary pretentiousness of "myriad" and "cognizant," to the intellectual dishonesty about the A's and Raiders, to the faux-Buddhism, to the inane reality-show banter, to the sycophantic treatment of Bonds and all things Giants, to the mind-blowingly self-centered interview style--just a total dick.

Interesting -- I've never heard Lyons say that . . . but no, that's ridiculous -- if he was safe, he was safe, if he was out, he was out.
You know, I still don't think anyone can tell for sure -- every replay I've ever seen, you can't tell if Posada tags Giambi's calf before he hits the plate or not. People get all excited because it was a great play by Jeter, so they "assume" Giambi was out -- I just don't think you can say for sure.
As far as Jeter is concerned, no, you can't consider it part of "World Series lore" since it wasn't in the WS, obviously.  But a great example of being in the right place at the right time.  I guess if anyone was gonna do that, Jeter would. Figures. :-)

The all-time best AN thread ever
I can't help myself -- please forgive me, but I gotta do some more. I'm addicted . . .
I think if you're not old enough to remember baseball pre-DH, you're not entitled to an opinion of it -- it's been over 30 years, for cryin' out loud!
I think people who are "ok" with the A's leaving Oakland aren't as passionate about the team as the ones who want 'em to stay.
I think it's ok to boo when players don't do their jobs -- it's not ok to swear or get personal -- but booing is perfectly fine. Million dollar athletes shouldn't take it personally.
I think "true" A's fans should love Canseco, and be ambivalent towards McGwire.  One guy always has nice things to say about Oakland, the other wears red.
I think that ex-A's who "move on" and then talk trash about the A's -- even joking -- are jerks, and deserve to get booed.
Dave Stewart was the greatest A's pitcher of all time.
I'm with you guys (some of you) -- when the Red Sox Nation attempts to take over the Coliseum, they should get heckled mercilessly.  This is OUR YARD -- I guarantee you, they wouldn't let you get away with it in Boston -- been there!
I think we talk about "who's cute" and "who's hot" WAY too much on AN.
I think if you never sat in the bleachers at the Coliseum, you can't really call yourself a "true" fan.

Bill King
I was thinking about writing a separate diary about Bill King, because several posters have said "what was so special about him?"  He did A's games from 1981 through 2005.  I honestly felt that from about 2003 on his work was not as good as the work that had preceded it...the constant throat-clearing, occasional trouble following a rapidly-moving and complex play (possibly deteriorating eyesight, I don't know), so I can understand why some of you weren't very impressed.  Korach was a better play-by-play guy for the last few years.  But I believe Bill should be judged on the entirety of his 25 years of work with the A's.  I love reading the opinions of those of you born in the '80's and '90's but as a 45-year-old who came here for my freshman year at Cal in the fall of 1979, and has stayed ever since, I think I can form a fuller opinion of Bill than a younger person can.

But I have massive respect for his work, and the rare times I was able to hear him, I enjoyed it. Of course, I had nothing to compare it to because, since I lived in the far East Bay and not the Pacific Ocean, I couldn't hear Korach/Cotroneo this year.

I am older than you are and while I appreciate the lenght of Bill King's career with the A's...I just can't agree that he was ever as good as people on here say he was. I will admit he was better pre-2000 than he was at the end of his career.

Even if I am not a big fan of his talent I am a big fan of him as a well-loved loyalist to the A's. God Bless him.

"ok" with the A's leaving Oakland
If the options are "within Oakland city limits or out of the Bay Area entirely because Fremont isn't good enough," then some fans' supposed "greater passion" is going to cost us an amazing local team.

nonononono...
That really did sound that way, didn't it?  Sorry, not what I meant -- I'd never blame the FANS for the team's departure, we have no control over it (I don't even think better regular attendance would help them stay in Oakland, the situation just seems far too political and therefore outside our control).

I happen to be pro-Oakland, for reasons that are unknown even to me -- living in Redwood City, I'd have a shorter drive to Fremont, and better public transit options to San Jose, but I hope the A's can stay in Oakland.  Dunno why.  But I really really hope they'll at least stay in the Bay Area, and it bugs me when people seem to have an attitude of "Oakland ONLY."  I would be okay with the A's playing anywhere in the Bay Area, even though Oakland is my first choice -- and I just don't think that means my "passion for the team" should be questioned when I've been to half the home games this season, when I make a 70-mile roundtrip on most weeknights to see them, despite having a family to neglect and a job I have to report to at 6:00 a.m. every morning.

That's all I meant... not that we're going to drive the team away our own little selves!

I agree 100%
If the A's move to the near South I'll never forgive Lew Wolff for blowing off Oakland.  But I'll still be an A's fan and will still go to games...I suspect I couldn't react differently even if I wanted to.

And I'd never question the passion of an A's fan, be they 81 gamer, NRAF, 3rd deck cheapskate, or Diamond Level cell phoner.  We are all brothers and sisters under the green and gold sky.

Are you aging to the point where you forgot that...5-year-olds can imagine a time long ago when there was no DH...a time as far removed as yesterday.  In every single game played in the National League.

Granted, "no DH" is not the same as "pre-DH", in the strictest sense, but, um, everyone still can compare the two forms of the game and thus have an opinion on it.

Since everyone else is doing it
here's mine (without reading the above, so IDK if they're the same)
  1. I think Huston Street would be better as a starter than a closer.
  2. I have never thought once this season that Mark Kotsay was worthy of a gold glove over Gary Matthews, Jr. Ellis and Chavy yes, but not Kotsay.
  3. As long as a new stadium is built a: north of Milpitas, b: south of Vacaville, and c: west of Stockton, i'm happy.
  4. No relation to the above: I'd rather see Mount Davis imploded and the Coliseum-and-surrounding-area cleaned up, than have a new stadium built.
  5. Jon Miller is the only positive of the San Francisco Giants.
  6. The A's need to sign Marco Scutaro to a long, long contract.
  7. I think Rich Harden would be better as a closer than a starter.
  8. I will not be voting for Ahnold or Phil Angelides in November. Instead, I will be writing in Wash for governor. ;)
  9. I still think E.Lo's arrest is a big effing deal.
  10. Dan Johnson should stay, but he is a bench player and no more.
  11. "Extra Innings" needs a better call screener. MUCH better.
  12. Robert Buan, while a pretty good host, is the biggest A's apologist out there. When a player/coach/KYCY sucks, call 'em out man!
  13. I will miss Z, not just because of his pitching, but because he has been the face of this team (for me) since he came up.
  14. Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good" is on my iPod and has a 5 star rating.
  15. I do not like Vince Cotroneo.

Here we go:
  1.  We'll never be as cool as we were with Segui, Blue Moon Odom, and Vida Blue.
  2.  Green and Gold are the only Springtime colors in baseball, and i think it's swell that we flaunt them.
  3.  If Macha were really a bad manager, the team would be lousy and the clubhouse atmosphere would be too.  A manager does more than make up the line up card, and the fact that players genuinely seem to enjoy playing for the A's, despite our meager fanbase and penny-pinching owners, speaks to his success.
  4.  If Pierzinksi was an "A", we'd love him.  He gets clutch hits.  As is, he's a first class jerk, but don't think we wouldn't be loving him if he were our jerk.  Kendall with a far better arm, power, and very clutch.
  5.  Of the big 3, Mulder was far and away the best playoff pitcher.  Zito hasn't been consistent since 2003, and he wouldn't be my number one coming into the playoffs.
  6.  I think Ralph B. is far less of a loudmouth and more intelligent than his peers on talk show radio.  He and Tom T. are very good in this genre.  Come to Portland and listen to the guys we have here.  Oy....
  7. After Frank, Mark Ellis will be the best field player on the A's two years from now.
  8.  Chavy won't be everything I'd hoped, but he's gritty and part of the heart and soul of the team.
  9.  You need speed to win games against great pitching staffs, which you're likely to run into in the playoffs.
  10. Sciosia did a brilliant job of coaching when the Angels won the series.
  11.  There's no one I'd rather watch bat than Barry Bonds, except perhaps Pujols.
  12.  If Pujols played in NY, they'd already have a candy bar named after him.
  13.  I keep expecting Zito to say, "What the heck, I'll stay in Oakland for 1/2 price."  And Tejada will come back.
  14.  I'm thrilled for Jermaine Dye.
  15.  I like Jeter.  A lot.  Mariano Rivera is a God.
  16.  I get far more annoyed about other teams' fans than the teams themselves, except Roger Clemens.  And Curt Schilling.
  17.  I hate it when people boo their own players.
  18.  I like Rick Berry.
  19.  Joe Morgan was the best second baseman in the modern (post-Hornsby) era.

  2. I don't DJ is major league player, and I wish we would have traded him last year instead of bringing him up.
  3. I don't think Crosby will ever reach his potential here, but he will once he's traded.
  4. I'd move Street in a heartbeat if we could add another big time bat.
  5. I liked the signing of Loaiza when it happened, and I like even more now.
  6. I'd rather have JayPay in CF next year instead of Kotsay.

He gave an interview to the media that really soured me.  He talked about how all of this (the playoff race at the time) was out of our (the players) hands and they just had to live with what happened.  It pissed me off.  All I kept think was this guy has the biggest contract and is supposed to be the leader and it is out of his hands??

I didn't start listening to the radio till 2000, so I missed Bill King's heyday.  Even so, the drop-off 2002 to 2004 was dramatic.  He was definitely losing it at the end.  You tolerated it because you love the guy, but he really wasn't good in those final years.

What I liked about Bill King was his occasional use of obscure vocabulary or off-the-wall allusion.  His basic play-by-play was fine, but it was those little moments that set him apart.

I would not love Pierzynski even if he were an A. (Ditto for Clemens or Schilling.) Yes, you root for the guys on the team, but it doesn't mean you like them.  There are a few guys on the team currently whom I don't particularly like, and they are far less obnoxious than A.J. is.

Growing up in East Oakland..
and going to games since I was 7 years old in 1981 (my first real baseball memory is sitting behind home plate when the A's swept KC in the strike year playoffs...prior to getting wrecked by the Yanks - when my hatred of the Yanks started) It hink I have some type of credibility in my beliefs and thoughts.
  1. Bill King was the greatest. Period.  I won't read anything else that says otherwise. ( he and Lon Simmons were my favorite team of all time)
  2. I don't know if I'll still cheer for the franchise if they leave Oakland, unless they moved to San Leandro or Alameda...
  3. I have always liked Bay Area teams, which means that if the A's aren't playing I want SF to win.  I used to have the A's/Giants hat.
  4. I have nothing against Bonds...he isn't the most personable person, but damn he is a great ball player. Period.
  5. I like watching the Angels play, because it reminds me of Billy Ball (Martin) that is... I like hit and runs and stolen bases. Still want them to lose if it affects the A's playoff chances though.
  6. Yankees suck and the only way you should like the Yanks is if you're from there...your parents raised you on them, or your favorite all time player got traded there...even then when Rickey went to NY, I cheered for him, but still and always will hate the franchise.
  7. I won't miss Zito.  He was my least favorite out of the Big 3. but can we get Huddy back?
  8. I thought Hudson was kiddin' when he said the best pitcher on the staff was Harden, but apparently he was right on.
9)Because it's a tradition from when I was going to games in the early 80s, I love "Celebration" after the victory (or after a Dwayne Murphy homer)

10) Billy Martin is my favorite A's manager, with LaRussa a close 2nd.

I think "clutch hitting" is a viable...
...measurable stat.

I was a competitive bowler for many years, having bowled two 300 games, and won two junior state titles.

Nothing is more pressure-packed then needing that last strike for a perfect game, or needing a strike in the 10th frame to win a tournament.

I've literally seen people pee their pants from the pressure. I only remember the last strike from my second 300 game. The first one, I was so nervous and shaking so hard, that I almost tripped over my own feet on that last shot.

It's human nature that some people handle pressure better then others. When I bowled as a team at Fresno State, I always wanted to be the guy on the approach throwing the last shot when the team needed a strike to win.

Not everyone has that same attitude or approach.

Those who look to pressure-packed situations with trepidation and fear will never perform as well as someone who relishes the challenge.

It becomes a confidence thing, and we've all seen the effects of confidence (or lack thereof) on a major league hitter's production within the balance of a season.

Chavvy's overall makeup for example, shows a person who does not like being in the spotlight, and doesn't really want to be "the man" in a pressure-packed situation. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it needs to be understood when a player consistently struggles in the pressure-cooker of a postseason.

can't resist commenting
Actually, I am honestly open to the idea we can someday measure "clutch". However, it seems just as likely there is no difference at the major league level.

Look at it this way:  of course Jeter can handle game pressure better than ME or my mom. There are differences in how people deal with insane stress of different situations.  HOWEVER, once you brutally weed out the 700 best players out of tens of millions of baseball players, it's not surprising that BETWEEN players in the cream of the cream of the cream of the crop that they might be pretty even in how well they handle pressure.

by Apricot on Sep 22, 2006 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Not persuasive
because we witness so many typical human differences even at this level. One example: the struggles of young players.

A football example: Andrew Walter overthrowing a wide open in the end zone Randy Moss by 15 feet even though it's a pass Walter could throw 100 straight times and not miss. It involved nothing more than throwing the ball straight for 20 yards. So what happened? Walter, staring at his first touchdown pass, choked. And I'm not even criticizing him. It happens. And it's understandable. Even at the highest levels.

by RLangford on Sep 22, 2006 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

"witness" vs measure
like I said I'm not convinced one way or another about whether clutchness exists, but I'm also not convinced at all by "witness" testimony about clutch, which is totally biased by prejudice. I would welcome actual measurements.

Simple proof would be any testimony about A-Rod and clutch before this year. I am actually convinced (by winexp measurements) that he is NOT CLUTCH this year, but that is a complete fluke. A stopped clock is right twice a day and all those people who claimed he's unclutch in the past have no credibility.

I don't know anything about Walter, but I remember John Elway was marked as a loser choker most of his life until his last two semesters when a great running game got him some championships. Suddenly the guy is clutch?  The eye sees what it wants to.

Reminds me of the '98 Winter Olympics
When they were going to take away some Canadian snowboarder's medal because he tested positive for pot.  My philosophy teacher opined that they should have given him two medals for winning the race high.

They didn't take away the medal.

"The first night, we were right there," Bradley said. "All we needed was a couple of touchdowns, and we would have had them."

Someone that we sat next to briefly at the start of the game on AN Day (in the AN section, but I don't know who he was) seemed to have known one of the players in college... or knew people who knew him and his partying ways, or something... and he said, "All these boys are dirty."  Just the way he said it cracked me up.  Mr. Poppy still says it at times when I'm going "Aaaw!" over some cute thing a player just did with a fan or teammate...

I still think the three leading candidates are:

  1. AJ love
  2. Bill King non-love
  3. Krukow love

Unpopular opinions ...
  1.  The best player on the A's is Mark Kotsay.  When his back feels good, excels in all facets of the game.
  2.  I still think Jason Kendall is terrible.  (I'm starting to waiver on that, though.)
  3.  Dan Haren is very hittable.
  4.  Zito is no ace.
  5.  Bobby Crosby is a stud.  He may never become a great hitter, but he is a very good player.  If his body can't handle SS, the A's should consider making him a CF after Kotsay leaves.  Injury prone, no.  Terribly unlucky, yes.
  6.  Swisher, Johnson and Chavez all have the same long swing.  They're all overmatched against good pitching.
... and another thing.  Was anyone else surprised Wedge left Cliff Lee in to pitch to Kielty (batting right and after 100+ pitches) with the bases jammed?  Then Lee grooved a first pitch fastball.  Kielty is an excellent RH batter (if nothing else) and of course he was looking dead red.

Some other opinions ...
I think the Angels are the best team in baseball right (I'm glad the A's are up 7, and I do belive they'll win the division).  Matt Cain has the best stuff of any pitcher in baseball.  Halladay is the best pitcher.

I like the Giants, too, and they'll be good next year if they spend the money (wisely) that they'll free up if the offseason.

Miggy took steroids.  So did Mulder, Chavez Hudson and Harden.  Lots of others, too.  Look at pictures from two years ago (adult acne and swollen cheeks don't lie).  Andruw Jones, Kyle Farnsworth, Mark Prior, Kerry Wood ... the list goes on.

Jose Canseco is smart and never lied.  Say what you will about his motives, but the steroids "scandal" is not his fault and someone needed to blow the whistle.

The A's scouting's worst move in the last 8 years was not signing Dontrelle.  How'd they let him get out of Oakland/Alameda?

by iceplant on Sep 22, 2006 10:29 AM PDT reply actions

A couple more
There is zero chance the A's leave the Bay Area in the next 10 years, regardless of what happens with a new stadium. Las Vegas, Portland, etc. are bogeymen that Bud Selig uses to scare children, not real candidates for a major league team.

I couldn't stand Ted Lilly, but kind of liked Cory Lidle.

Some are sabermetricians.

by andeux on Sep 22, 2006 10:33 AM PDT reply actions

My List
  1. Always Hated Canseco (but loved Big Mac)
  2. Storm Davis, worst pitcher EVER (Even worse than Rincon)
  3. Don't care where the A's end up as long as it's in Northern Ca or Las Vegas.
  4. Chavy is OVER-RATED
  5. Crosby will always be the weakest (and most prone to injury) link, literally
Lastly, Nebraska, you are WAAAAY off-base.  Say what you want to about the players.  But don't ever, and I mean EVER, say anything about Bill King that isn't the highest praise possible.  :)

He was simply, the greatest baseball announcer ever, and I miss him every game.

Unpopular opinion? Not so much.

However, my reason might be.  I LOVE OAKLAND.  Being born and raised here gives me a great deal of civic pride.  The local sports teams, A's, Raiders and even Warriors, are a wonderful part of my city's identity and it would not be the same without them.

  2. I like Eric Byrnes.
  3. I have given up on Crosby.
  4. I like the tarps.
  5. I also like Robert Buan.
  6. I think the A's should move to Sacramento.  :-P
  7. I don't really care if the A's move, as long as they stay in NorCal.
  8. I don't like Mark Mulder anymore.  He used to be my second favorite Big 3, but I can't stand that guy anymore.
  9. Kruk and Kuip are amusing.
  10. I used to like Lou Seal more than Stomper.
  11. Vince Cotroneo bugs the heck out of me.
  12. I'm superstitious but I don't believe that saying the A's will win tomorrow will "jinx" them.
  13. AN's obsession with the Rev and HH is very annoying.  I have been to HH like 2 times.  Ever.  There's a reason I don't go that place and I it's extremely irritating that there are threads and comments on AN discussing that other blog.  Get over it!

by larrysgurl on Sep 22, 2006 12:15 PM PDT reply actions

True confessions...
I don't know how many of these are unpopular, but here goes...
  1. I don't think anyone can call him/herself a "real fan" at the expense of other people's fandom. Just because you've been a fan since before there were bases on the baseball diamond doesn't make you better than those of us who just discovered the amazingness of baseball a few years ago.
  2. Honestly, I don't really care about statistics beyond the basics. They're all well and good for GMs, wannabe GMs, and stat geeks (and I mean that in the nicest way possible), but they're not for me.
  3. I loved Bill King, although apparently, according to other comments in this thread, I didn't hear him in his prime.
  4. Ken Korach is amazing. Vince, not so much.
  5. Fosse has begun to annoy me more as every season passes, but I still like the guy.
  6. I haven't listened to one audio interview on AN. I generally don't have the time or attention span, and as much as I do appreciate the interviews, I don't generally get much from them that I don't already know.
  7. I think the Link Dumps are the best feature on AN. (Probably not unpopular, and no, Sal did not pay me to say that. Yet.)
  8. Although I find heckling in general slightly funny, I generally don't want to hear fans being abusive to visiting players or other fans. Not even the Yankees, Red Sox, or Angels.
  9. I'll miss Zito like I miss any other ex-A, but not extraordinarily. It feels like the majority of the time, he's just not worth the hype.
  10. I think I've gotten over Huddy, Mulder, and Tejada. But then I think about years gone by, and at that point I really do miss all three of them, even though Mulder's down a little on that list. They had good times here, and I appreciate that.
  11. I feel sad for Ted Lilly in Toronto.
  12. I like chocolate. A lot.
  13. Wait, this was supposed to be unpopular opinions?
  14. Forget #12, then.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 22, 2006 12:33 PM PDT reply actions

Oops, forgot some.
  1. I haven't given up on Bobby Crosby. I'd much rather have him back than have Scoot out there every day-- but I'm not a Scutaro h8r, either.
  2. And I haven't given up on Harden having a full healthy season. Call me an irrational optimist, whatever.
  3. I cannot stand Extra Innings. I haven't listened to it for a long time, but in the times I have, no callers say anything interesting, and neither does Buan. He spends his time fending off the stupid people who call in just to hear themselves talk.
  4. I don't like the wave, but honestly, I think it might be the evil "I'm-a-better-fan-than-you-because-I'm-sitting-here-patiently-watching-the-game-unfold" monster in me. Honestly, it doesn't really matter, in moderation anyway.
  5. HH is stupid and abusive, its blogmaster a jerk. So why are we still talking about it?
  6. I didn't realize I had this many opinions. Should probably stop here.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 22, 2006 12:41 PM PDT reply actions

I have one more...
I love being at home games, with the A's winning and all--but I often find cheering and clapping and even standing up to cheer for a homerun, inconvenient.  I'm jumping up and down on the inside, but what if I'm holding a drink or nachos? Too much work.

Oh, and I never wish for a foul ball to come my way, unless it has Rich Harden's phone number on it.

Nature's first green is gold...

What do you guys think about taking some of the 'hottest' topics of this thread and discussing them over the off-season on an open thread? I was thinking of the Bill King one as an example. People could write why they agree/disagree, we could have a vote to see how 'unpopular' these items really were, and maybe people could learn something during the discussion that might change their mind?

Horrible choice of words -- I was a passionate, true A's fan at 8 or whenever as well.

Best thread ever!
  1. The tarps are good. they look better than I could have imagined, and it is nice to have the 'crowd' less thinned-out.
  2. Jason Kendall is great for the A's and worth the money. Even if he hits .250.
  3. I'm secretly glad when the opposing team has injured players. I'm glad Liriano is out and I think it is fine to win "that way".
  4. I sneak booze into the games I attend.
  5. I really don't care if the A's move to Fremont as long as I can still take BART to the games.
  6. The baggy-pants look is aweful. Bring back the stirrups.
  7. I really wish the A's would go back to the bright green and yellow uniforms. I went to a "Turn-Back-the-Clock" game last year and they had the 70's uniforms and it just looked so good.
  8. I think interleague games are awesome.
  9. I forgive Loaiza's DUI now that he is pitching good and I probably wouldn't if he continued to suck. What he did was aweful, but it seems to have been a wake-up call for him to get his head right.
  10. I really don't think the city of Oakland deserves a MLB team as much as San Jose, Las Vegas, or Portland.
  11. I really wish the Pirates would have a winning season.
  12. I don't think the A's will have another Rookie-of-the-Year for a long, long time.
-these last two hurt but while I'm confessin'...
  1. I'm surprised the A's are beating the Angels in the division this year.
  2. I will be shocked if the A's win the World Series. I'd love it, but I just don't see it happening.

okay, here we go
  1. If Harden ever puts in a full season, he could win the Cy Young, and we should trade him immediately
  2. Billy Beane is much better than average, but makes a lot of obvious mistakes too. Kotsay, Kendall, Rhodes, Redman, Ramon Hernandez, etc.
  3. We should never ever guarentee Thomas a lot of money.
  4. The best team in the AL west for the next 4-5 years will be the Angels.
  5. Huston Street = trade bait
  6. Duke should move into the rotation
  7. We should move into full rebuilding mode next year. Trade players as soon as their value peaks. Hoard young talent. Cut payroll.

Should be, could be, but not in stone.

A's Front Office is a busy bunch; Soccer Teams, Stadiums in Fremont & San Jose. HDQRTRS in SJ.

Good marketing for stadium builders seeking team buyers is to field a winner and have butts in the seats.

Don't sell Beane & co. short. After they sell the A's is the time to worry.

not so controversial but my two cents
  1.  I like Ken Macha but I make fun of him and sometimes he exasperates me...but on the whole, good guy good manager in the context.
  2.  I'd give Crosby one more chance at 1. a healthy season and 2. vast improvement at the plate....that's it.
  3.  Milton is a time-bomb and I think he has a real busy head with a lot of noise in it.  Glad to see him do well, but there is always doubt in my mind about the other shoe dropping.
  4.  If I stay away or limit my peeks at HHeaven, I do much better with my anger issues.
  5.  I don't understand why one would be a Giants fan given the choice of the A's.
  6.  I don't think Wash is managerial material in fact.
  7.  We need a "normal" catcher.
  8.  DJ is a lost cause

by Reg on Sep 24, 2006 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions

mine are probably pretty unpopular...
OK I finally got around to thinking of some. Not sure if anyone is going to read any of these. I'm sure that most of the rason they are unpopular is because a) this is a blog for A's fans, and b) most people who are A's fans are from Northern CA, but anyway here it goes in no particular order:
  1. I always have and always will side with Gibson and the Dodgers. It was amazing. Sorry.
  2. I love Southern California, and specifically Orange County. It pisses me off when people talk trash on Southern California, or see one bad example and say everyone from OC is like that. Not everyone in Orange County is a spoiled brat or a moron. Only some of us are :)
  3. Along the same lines, not everyone who is an Angel fan is bad. My whole family is Angel fans and I was raised one (yeah... I know) and it sucks when I'm afraid to admit that to people because everyone hates them so much. I grew up and out of that and discovered the A's and I love them now more than anything, and the rivalry between the A's and Angels is super fun because I have people I love that I can debate with (my dad especially). I dislike the Angels now, and I don't like their fans who go to games because it's a social event (part of the reason I'm not a fan anymore), but I don't think I can ever say that I hate them. I mean, every team has to have fans or it wouldn't be any fun to beat them haha. (and while I'm at it, same goes for the Republican bashing around here recently, besides that it shouldn't be brought up on the site anyway. I just hate when people say that all individuals in a group must be the same. It's just not true, and it makes you look more ignorant making comments like that than it does the people you are trying to make fun of.)
  4. The only thing that would bother me about the A's leaving Oakland would be a possible name change. I know for a fact this is because I don't live up there, and driving 6 hours one direction, or 6 hours slightly another direction won't make much of a difference to me. And basically the reason I don't want them to change the name is because I fell in love with the team how it is... and besides, all of my merch says "Oakland" on it!
  5. Just thought I'd add this one since reading other people's lists: I don't like when people say they are better fans because they've liked a team longer. I know it's pointless to even bring anything up, because if the team wins we all get to celebrate regardless, but whatever. I know that I haven't been a fan that long (to put a number on it, I'd probably say I've only been a fan since 2004), so I would never consider myself the "biggest" A's fan. Even if I live to be 200 years old, and I'm still wearing my Swisher jersey shirt on random days and posting random comments on game threads here, I probably won't say I'm the biggest A's fan. I don't think there is really a way to judge people and how big of a fan they are. I dunno, it just bugs me when people think they have more of a right to enjoy something than someone else, simply because they've been a fan longer. Not that anyone here said that exactly, and don't get me wrong I give mad props to people who have stuck with a team their whole lives and are still obsessed with them (can't say I've done that). I do think that people who have suffered through more might find more joy deep down when things like victories happen, simply because they were hurt more by the loss since they actually experienced it, and that's way cool, but to say they "deserve" it more, or are bigger fans only puts people down who haven't been fans that long. I feel like it's like saying "you can't enjoy this victory because I'm a better fan than you", when really, someone next to you smiling and jumping up and down when Scoot gets the game winning hit off of FRod is enjoying it! Can't everyone celebrate good times when the A's win?
OK I think that's probably enough for now.

Late-Nite AM Radio Confessions...
Great thread.  Here are my unpopular opinions.
  1.  I do not despise the Yankees.  (In fact, I have rooted for two other teams early in my life:  the Yankees, which was the only baseball team a boy in Germany heard about, and the Braves, who were always on Channel 17 -- Ted Turner's first TV station -- in the South in the early 1970s.  Phil Niekro was a childhood hero.)
  2.  The A's do not have an ace and none of the Big Three was an ace.
  3.  The A's should not move anywhere out of the city limits.
  4.  The City of Oakland has been so badly mismanaged over decades that citizens no longer even comprehend a better way.  That's why city leaders get away with so much incompetence.  The stadium debate is just one example of how the city/county are unable to deal with modern policy/economic/mass transit/urban issues.
  5.  It's NOT OK to pay 650k for a 1940s fixer upper in Alameda.
  6.  Berkeley -- the city and its tumorous university -- has been overrated for two decades.
  7.  Today's public education system produces people who are unable to think critically, reason economically, or work efficiently.  It has failed for 30 years.
  8.  That system has produced government workers, appointees and elected who focus on entitlement, personal economic gain, networking and advancement, instead of focusing on serving the country.
  9.  I think HH should be removed from SB, and I think Kos is a coward.
  10.  I think Republicans should storm to victory in the upcoming elections, as a lesson to left-wing mouth-frothers who still don't understand that moderation is the key to political success.

Yes, that would certainly explain all of those Berkeley-educated Republican elected and appointed officials who are currently facing indictments.

My two cents ($37.50 with inflation)
Here goes, kiddies...
  1.  I hope that Sacramento loses the Kings and then uses the money they budgeted for a new arena to wow Lew Wolff and build his 10,000 occupancy transportation village/stadium project in Sacramento instead of Fremont.
  2.  Ken Macha is a reasonably smart guy; He'd be a great manager in the old days, but not so much today with the advent of stat geekery.  I'm glad he's gone.
  3.  I wish the A's would have the most alternative uniforms... more than the Mets. They should bring back the old sleeveless jerseys that say "A's" on them, as well as the black alt uni from the late 90's, as well as a revised button down version of the yellow "OAKLAND" jersey from the 80's.  The A's should have at least 10 different uniform options.
  4.  I think Bobby Crosby might just be the second coming of Ben Grieve, but I think Rich Harden is the real thing, albeit he might have to become a closer in the long run; but by that time, he'll be wearing another team's colors.
  5.  I'd like to see Milton Bradley get into either strict Zen Buddhist meditation or hardcore sadomasochism (as a bottom)... something to quiet the ego and give him a regular source of endorphins.  He'll be a better player and better person for it.
  6.  I think that Scott Hatteberg needs to be hired back by the A's front office as soon as his playing career is over.  I could see Hatty as an assistant GM, 'cause he's got a good head on his shoulders.
  7.  I never did like the Jeremy Giambi for John Mabry trade, because a laid back team needs a good consistent weed dealer.  And heck, if your weed dealer's OBP is over .360, stick him in left.  Maybe let him grow some plants in foul territory.
  8.  I think Billy Beane should start a punk band in the offseason, maybe with Zito and Scott Spiezio.  I'd go see them.
  9.  I once got kicked out of Comiskey Park for sneaking down into the good seats to give Frank Thomas some encouragement  (this was in 2002 when the boobirds were on his a$$.)  The last words I said before I had to go were "If they don't love you here, come to Oakland.  You'll be happy there."  I'm so glad I was right.

And two more...
I think that the A's should have signed Rickey Henderson to a contract after they were eliminated in 2005 and let him retire as an Athletic.

I also think that the A's should do the same thing for Brandon Buckley.  He beat Adam Piatt in a home run derby at Fenway once.  I'd love to see him get at least one major league AB, even if it's just an elegant strikeout.

I too
would prefer Sac-town to Fremont. Mostly because I grew up in Sac rooting for the A's, so to have them in my hometown would be okay.

mine.
  1. I think Eric Byrnes is on the juice. Also, he looks like a daytime TV star (I'm thinkin' Jasper Jax on "General Hospital").
  2. One of my best friends is a Rangers fan. I hate neither Texas nor my friend (the Dallas Cowboys are another story).
  3. I much prefer the 49ers to the Raiders; the 49ers suck almost as much but at least their fans don't smash the windows of Fruitvale McDonald's.
  4. Though I appreciate it in others, I myself do not aspire to stat geekery.
  5. I could give a crap which BART train wins the race or under which hat the damn hot dog is hidden.
  6. I think Buckley's Volvo station wagon is a WAY hotter ride than Street's Cadillac Escalade. To me, crappy station wagon says Oakland, whereas Escalade says BoSox.
