Open Thread: Game 146 - A's vs. White Sox (cont.)

3-1 A's after 4 innings, thanks to, well, "smart ball"--tagging up on a short fly ball when Dye failed to get himself into proper throwing position. That's something you will never see from Kotsay; hence my "man-crush" (the triple didn't hurt either)...

A's question
I have a question.
Why does it seem that when one member from our beloved flock strays to another team, their batting average shoots up like a geyser?
Hatteberg
Byrnes
Dye
Tejada...
Could anyone explain this phenomenon?

by Alejandro on Sep 15, 2006 9:57 PM PDT reply actions

possibly because
other teams allow these players to swing more freely? What you should really evaluate is the OBP's  of these players as they leave oakland.

Nice game...
too bad I have to listen to the Chisox announcing team, which closed the 9th with "the A's are a very opportunistic team, taking advantage of the two gift runs we gave them in the fourth."

The "gift runs" they mentioned about six times during the broadcast, the "opportunistic" two or three. Because, you know, scoring 4 runs on 10 hits and leaving God knows how many runner stranded at third counts as "opportunistic".

I know, they're known homers. Still, no competence whatsoever. Jackasses.

Just remember
they're not engaged in "announcing ballgames."  They're doing a very sophisticated form of performance art.  Once you free yourself of the shackles of accuracy, intelligence, coherent analysis, objectivity, and articulateness, what Hawk et al. do is easier to appreciate.

Can the Rangers take at least one from the
Angels.  Or is Showalter playing games again.

Funny how they scored 11 runs Weds and then two runs in two nights...

Beware the Reverend's rancid carne asada!

by BruceBochte on Sep 15, 2006 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

well
if you disregard unearned runs as should be done when evaluating team pitching rankings you will see the Angels have an ERA of 4.05 which is third best in all of baseball. They have the pitching potential to dominate teams just like we did in august and the past two games. Hopefully we can continue our old ways.

by SoCalAsFan on Sep 15, 2006 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

i figured this year they'd play
hard against the angels rather than throw game away down the stretch. I mean they're more angry at them than us because of beanball wars their past series.

by SoCalAsFan on Sep 15, 2006 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Why should "you disregard
unearned runs"?
On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

by rfloh on Sep 15, 2006 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions

because
they are a product of bad defense and not pitching. To me ERA is the most important factor, and espn.com ranks team pitching based on total runs allowed and not total ER allowed. That seems absurd.

by SoCalAsFan on Sep 15, 2006 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I think they pay no attention to Buckie-boy
and, knowing they are out of it, are just laying down.  Many of their good guys won't be back next year and maybe they just do not care enough to really try anymore.  I personally cannot stand Showalter's managing style and it must get old for his players as well.  Too bad. . .cause we would all appreciate a little help  :-)
