Link Dump 8/16: DLDTBNL
After last night's victory, we have some reading to catch up on.
Some think that Swish might be recovered from his illness...
Swisher is beginning to resemble the player he was in the first half -- 20 homers, 52 RBI -- and not the man who hit .188 in July during a bout with mononucleosis in which he dropped 14 pounds. It was evident his appetite has returned when he polished off some postgame lobster and then gnawed on a hunk of red meat before addressing the media.
"Swisher gnawing on a hunk of red meat" is one of the better visual images from A's press this year.
THT takes a look at the A's streak against the M's:
With a run of games like that enjoyed by the A's against the Mariners, it'd be easy to keep piling on. But the fact of the matter is that the A's dominance of Seattle, including five wins in the past two weeks, has basically been the difference in the A's season so far. Thanks to the Mariners, the Oakland A's have quietly been the hottest team in the American League. On the morning of July 31, the A's were a slim half game ahead of the Angels, with the Rangers and the Mariners well within striking distance at three and 3.5 games back, respectively. The A's were set to play 12 of their next 15 games against the AL West, including six games against Seattle.
This bothers me.
The difference in the A's season isn't that they have beaten the M's a lot. The difference is that the A's have beaten the M's while the Rangers and Angels haven't. It's ludicrous to reconstruct seasonal records if the M's had only won 4 or 5 games from us. One can say that about any team. Baseball may be about individual matchups, but I have a hard time believing that Oakland matches up so specifically well against Seattle that it explains the 14-1 record. Seattle is any other .470 team, and the difference in Oakland's season is that they are beating the .470 teams while their opponents aren't.
Lew Wolff, like me, is expecting the A's to lose Barry Zito. But he is saying, at least to the press, that Frank Thomas will be an offseason priority.
"Barry needs a big-market team to justify the kind of contract he deserves," Lewis Wolff said. "It's really up to Billy (Beane) and not to me, but he is a terrific young man -- I can make him a real-estate deal."Wolff laughed and added, "That's counted (as a contract), by the way. If he stays with us or wherever he goes, I wish him so well."
Regarding Frank Thomas returning next year, Wolff said, "It would be very sad if we didn't bring him back. He's been a great presence for us on and off the field."
Barry Zito is going to give some a team bad case of buyer's remorse; I hope it's not us. Zito will soon be a good player with a great player's contract. Would that the A's spend those resources elsewhere, and spend wisely. Frank Thomas, I hope, will likely be a good player with an old player's contract. I think there's a good chance that we'll bring him back if we don't trade for Gary Sheffield.
As expected, Bobby Crosby will probably return friday and, according to Billy Beane, he will be the starting shortstop.
That's fine. Beane has constructed a team that is 51/2 games to the positive in the American League West, and this is eight straight seasons the A's have headed into the stretch with the playoffs in sight. So even the devil would have a tough time advocating against him.
But one man's return means another man's removal, and so far, all signs indicate Marco Scutaro will be the removee.
That would be the smart move. Scoot can sub in to give Crosby or Ellis or Chavez some rest, but his hot hitting is no reason to Wally Pipp Crosby out of the lineup. Crosby is a superior defensive shortstop and Oakland must be willing to show faith in its young players, especially in the heat of a pennant race. The lifeblood of this team is that it allows young players to succeed by running them onto the field even when they struggle. If we let a pennant race change that, it's only a few steps downhill until we are saddled with mediocre players on free agent contracts because we were too scared to let young guys learn on the job. Crosby will be, barring a big trade, our shortstop for the forseeable future, and he will probably be an above-average player. Scutaro will be traded or released as soon as he starts to get expensive, which, by my count, will be after next season.
I'm looking forward to Crosby coming back. You should be, too.

It will take longer to put them back up with less time, too. On Aug.27, the Raiders host their Raiders Nation celebration, and they want to showcase the whole stadium to potential season-ticket buyers.

one quote from the story
by ohtobe21likehuston on Aug 16, 2006 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions
Dog day was a blast!
As it turns out, our seats were right next to Mrs. MaEl (and Brutus) and Mrs. Big Hurt (and Barbie and several Little Hurts.) You know how people look like their dogs? Barbie is the biggest bulldog I've ever seen! The funny thing was, they had a staging area in one of the parking lots where you'd pick up your tickets and show your dogs ID tags and vaccine certificate and all of the dogs were really well behaved. Except for this one dog that kept wigging out and barking rather aggressively at other dogs. Who did it turn out to be? Barbie. We went to our seats and soon, they all came and sat next to us.
I can tell you what's hot with the A's families: bedazzling! Mrs. MaEl had bedazzled a tiny tank top for Brutus that said "BRUTUS 14" on the back in green and gold sequins. She had also bedazzled her flip flops to match and Brutus' collar. (I know she did them herself, because I was sure to ask her.) He looked adorable. Mrs. Big Hurt had a big bedazzled "35" on the right back pocket of her pants, and one of the little hurts had "BIG HURT" bedazzled on her t'shirt. She held Brutus for most of the time. The Saarloos dog, Abby was there, too, but I didn't see Mrs. Loos.
Anyhoo, it was a really fun night. And I appreciate that the team obliged with a blowout, because it was hard to focus on the game with all the activity in the plaza seats. It was also funny how when something big would happen, a lot of the dogs would start barking! It really added to the drumming.
That sounds like fun!

BABIP for batters
BABIP is not a good indication of luck for batters, only for pitchers. Batters have a signifiant amount of control over the rate at which their batted balls in play fall for hits. A very very good hitter, say one whose true ability is a .350 hitter, should have a much higher BABIP than a .270 hitter.
Think about the counter example. I could go out there and flail away at major league pitching, making weak contact most of the time in the form of slow rollers on the infield. My BABIP would be .040 or something equivalently horrific. Does that mean that I've just been unlucky? No, it just means I'm not a major league hitter.
It's true...
If Ethier had a more reasonable but still impressive .340 BABIP, he'd be hitting 304/349/513. Still very very good (better than most of what we've got here), but not the insane Vernon Wells numbers he's got now. And that's assuming the isolated slugging is for real (it may be, but he's never had a 200+ ISO before, so color me skeptical).
Ethier will be a good, above average player. But the hagiography has got to stop before it even begins.
ethier's BABIP
which includes besides his BABIP, also his hit distribution, that is line drive % etc.
Sure batters have significant amount of control over the rate at which their batted balls fall for hits; but generally, statheads consider that a hitter with average luck should have a BABIP of line drive percentage + .120. Ethier's LD% is 23.1.
what that disregards ...

That said, the horns are irritating, but its my team and I like it. I love the drums. ESPN is scarmabled on my signal, but I turn it on when the A's are playing on naitonal TV so I can hear the drums way out here in Boston. I like that opposing players find it distracting. It reminds me of home.
The Coli is ugly thanks to Al Davis. Yick. But it is an endearing post modern ugliness that has architectural merit like Yves Klien has conceptual merit, but in execution, neither approximates true aethetic beuaty. As an A's fan, I try to transcend moribund traditional concepts of attractiveness, such as symmetry, airiness, balance, or workmanship, and instead I focus on the brooding industrial commentary that the coliseum makes as if to say "life is hopeless, but not serious". Also, it makes the angles pitchin staff less ugly by comparison.

Regarding Crosby...
To say he's been terrible doesn't even cover it; it really doesn't. And now he's coming back off an injury rest; that can't help his batting.
Yes, he's missed in the field, but if you glance at his numbers without looking at his name, you'd think a pitcher was up at the plate.
He's batting .229. Yes, batting average is a terrible way to evalutate players.
His OBP is .297. .297. That's awful. That's beyond awful. He's been walked only 34 times out of 345, and his strikeouts are more than double his walks.
His slugging percentage? .339. .339. For comparison, Jason Kendall's is .324. Yes, this year.
Yes, Bobby Crosby is who the A's have lined up for the future at shortstop, for better or for worse. But we are winning right now, with a very real chance for the playoffs of 2006, and Crosby has not shown in a very long time that he can have one good pressure at-bat, much less six weeks of them.
Yes, I'm scared to let him learn on the job, because so far, he has refused to make adjustments in his swing that would give him any kind of sucess at the major league level. He has frustrated us all year with his inability to hit to the opposite field, with his swing-for-the-fences stroke when a simple single would do the trick, and his over-eagerness at the plate with any combination of runners on base.
The hardest I cheered for him this year was at AN Day, when after having two awful at-bats, he bunted for a base hit. It was awesome.
I want this year for the A's. I will very much welcome Crosby back on the field, where his defense will be a major upgrade over our current SS. However, unless something has DRASTICALLY changed in the weeks that he's been away, Crosby will hurt this team at the plate.
so, uh ...
Ellis...
And holy hell, are his numbers really almost exactly the same as Crosby's?! Wow. I guess I really didn't realize that he, too, has been AWFUL. Why are we winning, again?
Look, our shortstop, second base, and backup SS/2B all suck. I can't help that. But I'd rather see Ellis or Scutaro at the plate than I would Crosby.
But yes, Crosby and Ellis belong in the field for defense. But I reserve the right to throw things, including chairs, when Crosby pops up with the winning run on third.

Baseball Prospectus in denial
Neyer, as you all likely know, ludicrously said in his chat yesterday that you can "book" Texas in the playoffs.
And now today, apparently the HAL 9000 has taken over the controls at Baseball Prospectus. Their daily "Playoff Odds Report" that simiulates the rest of the season and posts current odds for teams to make the post-season now has Texas with a record of 64-55, 3 games back of the A's, and thus predicts that the Rangers, due to superior run differential, are more likely to win the division.
That's hilarious. Now they're just changing the Rangers record to make it all work out the way it's supposed to.
Link (I hope):
www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/ps_odds.php
Damn, they just updated it
Somewhere the BP computer is no doubt singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" as its circuits are one by one removed and it fades into AI oblivian.
By the way, the Updated--and accurate--projections have the A's at 63% to win the division. Angels 20%; Rangers 16%.
Were you also not wearing Jennifer's glasses?
But KC won!
Here's the problem...
In English, if a team is playing like a .600 team (based on run differential, not actual record), the odds report figures (actually, regresses) that the team will play somewhere between .600 and .500 (say, .540). Then, for each season, it randomly guesses the winning percentage for the rest of the year as .540, or something distributed normally around .540. Obviously, that's not accurate, so it runs the sim a million times, each time guessing a winning percentage around .540 -- sometimes higher, sometimes lower.
The problem, as I see it, is in the regression step. It shouldn't be regressing teams to .500, but to some reasonable projection of a teams performance versus their run differenthttp://www.athleticsnation.com/comments/2006/8/16/104314/957/127/post#hereial based performance. For that reason, BP has the PECOTA-adjusted report, which gives the A's a better shot at making the playoffs. The PECOTA-adjusted report instead regresses the A's actual performance based on run differential (.500) to their PECOTA projection (something around .560). This is, IMO, a more accurate way to run the simulation.
Check out the ELO projection, too
I'm wondering if they've ever led the division by 5.5 in August before. Definitely not in 2000. Of course not in 2001 when the Mariners won 116. Maybe in 2002 and 2003. Anybody know?
But this does feel to me like the biggest lead they've had in August.

A great and very tender story - tissue warning
The elephant seemed distressed so the man approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot. There was a large thorn deeply embedded in the bottom of the foot.
As carefully and as gently as he could he removed the thorn and the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man and with a rather stern look on its face, stared at him. For a good ten minutes the man stood frozen -- thinking of nothing else but being trampled.
Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned and walked away.
For years after, the man remembered the elephant and the events of that day. One day the man was walking through the zoo with his son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to where they are standing at the rail. It stared at him and the man couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant.
After a while it trumpeted loudly; then it continued to stare at him.
The man summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder.
Suddenly the elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of the man's legs and swung him wildly back and forth along the railing, killing him.
Probably wasn't the same elephant.
Or maybe it was the same

Simmons hates the A's
I can't take the A's seriously -- no home-field advantage, not a single dangerous bat, no Rich Harden, a 1-2 punch of starters (Zito and Haren) who seem to get shelled every three weeks (only their statistics don't reflect this for some reason), and a good bullpen that's helmed by the exceedingly hittable Huston Street (trust me, he's on my AL-only team; even when he's shaking hands after the save, you're still waiting for something bad to happen). And did I mention the legacy of playoff losses? They're like the Memphis Grizzlies of the American League. Whatever.

I think the Yankees would need to think hard about playing either team in October. For a "stat" guy, he seems to revert to historical analogy pretty quickly.
The plain fact of the matter is that he thinks the A's have an ALDS curse. We all know about curses. Just ask the folks in Boston and Chicago.
since when is simmons a "stat" guy?
Ok...Mea Culpa
As far as the Yankees are concerned (since I am NOT a stat guy) I was thinking that with 9 games left against the BoSOX, the BoSOX could (and would) write their own fate here.
However, looking at their remaining schedules, the Yanks have a much easier schedule. So I suppose I should reverse their order.
I think I will stand by my original call though, for a different reason.
I think the Yankees schedule is TOO easy. I predict that the Yankees are going to go through a weird slump, and lose a bunch of games that they should win.
<puts away dusty cracked crystal ball>
Wow...really?
The only AL team I would put ahead of the Yanks rigt now if I had to pick a team to beat them playoff time would be the White Sox.

Kane County / Sulentic update
With his team leading 4-2, Perdomo came on in the ninth hoping to earn his 29th save. He walked first baseman Steve Kleen to open the inning, and shortstop Justin Sellers followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs.
Left fielder Matt Sulentic, the Athletics' third-rounder pick this June from Hillcrest High in suburban Dallas, then delivered a single to right to tie the game at four.
"It was at a time when we really needed it, so I just had to bear down and fortunately I got the job done," Sulentic told the Beacon News. "You have to go up there with confidence or you have no chance."
Center fielder Chad Boyd promptly drove home Sulentic with a double to left field to send the Cougar fans home happy.
"I was looking for a fastball in that situation because they had been challenging me the entire game," Boyd told the paper. "I love those situations."
The hit was Boyd's second of the night, and the 21-year-old is now hitting .362/.421/.514 in 185 at-bats since his promotion from the short-season Northwest League. He was a ninth-round pick in 2004 out of El Camino Real High in West Hills, Calif.
The win was the seventh in a row at home for the Cougars and moved them within a half game of Quad Cities for first place in the MWL Western Division.
Very impressive

don't be jealous just because
the new standards are totally silly. pretty soon we're going to have over 50 planets in the solar system, 8 regular planets and a bunch of "plutons" that are pretty much glorified asteroids...
and the biggest news is that our moon will soon be a planet, which means we're in a dual planet system!
"soon"
But what I really want to know is what Darren Daulton has to say about all of this. Or Bill Lee.
soon, meaning
Prospectus Hit List is always highly comic
"Let's see, why don't I just order these by run differential, that way I won't have to think about anything and it will be completely meaningless."
What a joke. I bet, though, that Cleveland fans are sleeping well knowing they're high on the BP Hit List.

WHEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
passan on rookies
It sounds like "bulletin board material"
The only thing I can figure is that it is defense, notoriously hard to measure statistically, which is enabling the A's to win games. Could there be a correlation between excellent team defense and 1 and 2 run victories? If this is indeed the case, than I wonder how long the A's can ride that horse and whether it is good for one or more playoff round victories?

Rookie catcher Eliezer Alfonzo said Wednesday that when closer Armando Benitez is on the hill, he has no idea what pitch is coming his way. Got to be kidding, right? Nope.
"He tells me, 'Just stay there, I'll throw what I want to throw,'" said Alfonzo. "I don't even put anything [signs] down. I don't know what he's throwing."
