Open Thread: Game 117 - A's vs. Devil Rays

Fine. I'll admit it. I'm jealous that the Dodgers are hotter than the A's right now. I'm used to the A's being the hottest team of August, and although we're certainly doing our part this year, we're being upstaged. That being said, as long as we remain ahead of the other team that claims Los Angeles, I think I'll live.

The 2006 Oakland Athletics have played some maddening, frustrating, want-to-kick-a-baby-seal type of baseball this year, but how in the heck do you get mad at a team that is winning nearly every game it plays? The answer is simple: You don't. Just sit back, and enjoy the ride, because it's a good one.

A's go for the sweep today, with their best pitcher on the mound vs. the Devil Rays.

Wait...what's that? How do you spell that? L-O-A-I-Z-A? Oh.

I kid, I kid.

E-Lo has looked infinitely better lately, and the way the A's have been playing, if he can pitch six strong innings and allow three runs or less, the A's bullpen and offense should take it the rest of the way. Of course, the runs will be scored via the base on balls, possibly with an error thrown in the mix; there could be a balk, and almost certainly a double-play-run-scoring opportunity, but five runs should be scored anyway. That's my plan. Let's see how it plays.

Lineups

TB

Upton
Hollins
Crawford
Norton
Gomes
Branyan
Paul
Perez
Zobrist

They've decided to scramble the alphabet a bit.

OAK

Kendall
Swisher
Bradley
Thomas
Chavez
Payton
Kielty
Scutaro
Ellis

I still think Payton and Chavez should be switched, but what do I know?

Wow, I like waking up just before the game begins. It makes an exciting 'morning'.

I haven't been able to watch an A's game in...forever, and I can't watch the game today, either, because I have somewhere to be...grrr.

I've been relying on chavinator for all my baseball news this week, but even she can't remember every diary posted on AN... ;)

If it were the A's
Yes 3-0 in the second inning is being crushed with our offence how it is, but this is the Yankee offence we are talking about. They score their RISP. Now excuse me while I go take a shower, I feel so dirty defending and rooting for the Yankees to win toady.

Perception is not reality alert:
I don't know the Yankees' stats with RISP, but I know they have had a couple truly atrocious stretches--like 5/50 bad--that were worse than the A's. One of those stretches coincided with our sweep at Yankee Stadium, in which NYY left exactly a truckload of RISP.

First off
I was being snarky about the A's leaving there RISP. I think the nature of high run scoring teams is to have a high LOB because so many people get on base to begin with. So it goes they should also leave many RISP. Unfortunately when there is a game on here in London it is usually the Yankees and yes my perception is they score more runs when they need them than the A's. The reality is also that the Yankees are third in runs scored by 100 more runs than the A's this season. So in conculsion who cares how many runners are left in scoring position, the Yankees probably do leave many more that the A's because they hit and walk more than the A's but the Yankees score more runs in the end and hopefully will score more the the Angels today.

by Athletics Fan In London on Aug 13, 2006 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions

But isn't RISP best measured
through average? Indeed, it is more productive to go 10/100 than it is to go 2/2, but the team that goes 2/2 doesn't have RISP problems, it has GRISP problems (Getting Runners Into Scoring Position).

The A's average with RISP is indeed dead last (give or take a dead rat) in the AL. But I don't think the Yankees are at the top (maybe they are, I don't know), though their offensive prowess--their runs scored and the hitters they present--suggest they should be.

Bases loaded, one out, three already in, a 3-0 count on the hitter, and he gets out of it with a double play. Let's hope the Angels really regret that.

OK wait a second.  Let's see something.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

First 14 games post ASB:  1-13
Next 14 games:  13-1

So since the ASB they are 14-14, or in other words, .500.  That about right?  I guess that is hot for the West, AL or NL ;).

A pitcher with a line I feel I could possibly achieve in a major league game.

Luke Hudson (Royals):

0.1 IP, 8 hits, 11 runs, 10 ER, 3 BB, 1 K.

Not sure about the strikeout, but I figure after 6-7 hits and a couple walks, either the hitters would be laughing too hard to make contact, or the umpire might feel sorry for me.

Weaver's got great.....
command, and his fast ball has a lot of run/tail on it.

Lots of swings and misses on the fastball, but it doesn't look that dominating.  That delivery must be tough on the hitters.  Great Yankee stadium debut for both the Angel rookie hurlers.

Between Santana, Weaver, and Saunders the next few years aren't looking so swell....

by sprtsnwyn on Aug 13, 2006 12:53 PM PDT reply actions

Big start today for Loaiza
And here's why:

The Angels, by just about any measure beyond won-lost, are better than us. Look at Weaver today. Consider our rotation vs. theirs. Theirs is clearly better. I think the lineups favor them a bit. Relief favors us a bit. And we have better defense. But I honestly think, objectively, that they are the better team.

If we are to hold onto our lead without Harden, then I think one of two things needs to happen.

Either,

1) The lineup will need a stretch where it just takes off.

or

2) Loaiza needs to get good.

Of course, there's a real chance that I'm wrong, that we'll continue to sort of stumble our way to a division title, run differential be damned, fourth and fifth starter quality be damned. I'd be fine with that.

But I think the A's need either Loaiza or the lineup to step up if we're going to close this thing out.

That's why I think today matters a lot. Loaiza needs to show us something. He needs to become an above average starter.

by RLangford on Aug 13, 2006 12:56 PM PDT reply actions

based on what?
their starting pitching and offense are clearly better than ours.  we have better defense and relief pitching, but if we didn't have a 4.5 game lead, i'd be really worried right now.

payton ahead of chavez?
I have to say, I'd rather Payton behind Chavez, rather than behind Thomas.  The Big Hurt is such a bottleneck on the bases, I hate to see Payton have to hold up station-to-station once he's on.  Chavez isn't as fast as Payton of course, but can certainly score from second on a single and force the throw to the plate, letting Payton get to third, conceivably.

fun corcoran facts:
The prison's best known inmates include Charles Manson, Juan Vellejo Corona, who murdered twenty-five people in 1971, and Sirhan Sirhan.

In March 1997, the CBS News newsmagazine 60 Minutes broke the story of a scandal at Corcoran where the guards were accused of playing "gladiator" games with the prisoners. They would put two rival gang members known to hate each other in the same exercise yard at the same time, and supposedly bet on who would win the fight.
