A Hollow Victory, But A Victory Nonetheless
Don't get me wrong. I'll take a win, and a 4.5 game lead in the division, any day of the week--even if it takes more walks and balks than you'll find in a Dr. Seuss story. It was not a pretty victory for the A's, who needed six consecutive scoreless innings, and 10 consecutive stranded runners, before they could finally add on to the 5-spot they were gift-wrapped by that wild and Casey guy, Mr. Fossum.
One more run and Chad Gaudin would have come in to finish up, but as the A's were not able to shake the Devil Rays as they climbed back into the game, and instead of Gaudin, Macha went to Duchscherer and Street, each for the second day in a row. That probably renders Duke unavailable on Sunday, and leaves Street's effectiveness questionable for a Sunday save the A's hope he has the chance to try to get. Perhaps tomorrow takes care of itself, hopefully in a good way. But this was not a win for the scrapbook.
What is was, however, was a win for the scrappy. Fossum was wild, but the A's also had a lot of good at-bats--notably Mark Ellis, who saw 7, 8, and 9 pitches in three of his ABs, Milton Bradley, who reached base each of his first four plate appearances, and Marco Scutaro, who stands out from Crosby in his relaxed, non-anxious approach with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, Blanton continued to do what he has done consistently since June 1st, 2005, and that is win baseball games. Don't look now, but Cupcakes is now a 13-game winner, which puts him on pace to win 18 games this season.
So the A's continue to do a lot right and while they're still leaving a lot of runners on base, it is partly because they are actually getting a lot of guys on base. You could do worse that to be the A's right now. A lot worse.

you are not the only dreading Crosby coming back
That being said, however, when he comes to the plate there is a confidence that something good will be made to happen. Not just happen, but made to happen by someone who is actually thinking while they are up there, whereas Crosby just flails away. So no, I think we're all dreading the automatic "out" that is Bobby Crosby circa 2006.
Scutaro is looking good at the plate.
Maybe the real reason behind using Street/Duke -- Mach knows that Loaiza's pitching tomorrow, and is accepting the inevitable.

what still bugs me about Crosby is
Same with Harden. Was it just extra incentive to play better? What am I not understanding?
All that money going to waste with the injuries.

wolffpackdavid, the reason
Beane had to trade Ted Lilly because his arby years were going to bump his salary from $300,000K to $3,000,000. Haren, Harden, Crosby, et al are locked in at a salary the A's can afford throughout the 6 years.
I am for Crosby

by wolffpackdavid on Aug 12, 2006 9:59 PM PDT reply actions
Crosby's defense is CLEARLY superior
Scutaro has good at-bats. He will move the runner when needed, put up a fight with the bases loaded, come up with the occasional huge hit with men on base, draw a walk once in a while, and never make you feel he is an automatic out.
Crosby is a black hole in the offense and will be equivalent to the pitcher's spot in the lineup for opposing teams, which is unacceptable at this point in the season. If Crosby already struggles with 'pressure at-bats', how much more will he struggle down the stretch playing Anaheim for what, quite possibly, could be the last playoff spot?
Scutaro is who he is, and that is a sub-par baseball player, with flashes of competence, both in the field, and at the plate.
Crosby, v. 2006, has inspired NO confidence in the lineup, and will be a liability that his defense can't save.
P.S. Nice win, bitches!
Better plan...

I said it before
We have played our best ball of the season since he's been gone, why mess with success? Guy kills a rally like Raid kills bugs, dead. Less he succeeds, the harder he tries to hit every pitch to the Fruitvale BART station. Marco isn't Bert Campaneris or Derek Jeter but he doesn't try to be anyone but himself and he doesn't insist on batting 3rd. I feel the lower Chavez hits in the order, the better Marco does at #8 because he sees better pitches, more fastballs, whatever.
It's not entirely Crosby's fault. He's the golden boy becuase the management anointed him as such before they knew what they really had, or didn't have, or what might take years for them to have. Biiiiiig poster of him, several stories tall, hanging in the stadium, Mr. Rookie of the Year. He needs a few years to sort it out and fail so he can succeed eventually and develop into the player he could be, but this team exists on a tightrope and can't afford an offensive black hole at shortstop, particularly if it falls back to this pattern where Macha's under pressure to let the guy drift back up the order to the third spot.
We have a three-hitter now, he draws tons of walks, he takes the outside pitches with two strikes the other way, he hits for power, he sees pitches, he hits doubles. He has become the sparkplug of our team, responsible than perhaps any other guy for the recent upsurge in offense and the idea that we have the biggest division lead this evening than we have since Sept. of 2004. To move him out of that spot would be pure suicide, and with Crosby coming back it's inevitable he will want that spot, which he has not earned. Another part of Crosby's act I dislike is the sense of entitlement, the unsubstantiated swagger, the hubris... like I said it's not all his fault but he bears the brunt of the responsibility.
You've all heard me say all this a thousand times but we are playing so well now, so crisply in a lot of areas, and it's a delicate balance a long time in the making which I don't want to see upset for the sake of a single player, no matter how good he is, might someday be, or just plain isn't.
The answer is that Crosby is the utility player for the rest of this year, let it be a part of his humbling and an object lesson in team concept for him.

Unfortunately, with Crosby
Does Crosby
precisely Nico
He could be a decent, maybe even an excellent, player. But it's got all twisted here (again, not his fault entirely, just mostly) and it isn't going to work out in Oakland. It's never easy to follow a team's best player. I know a lot of hearts will be broken by it but he needs a fresh start.
I'm sorry but this is how I see it.

Well-said. I agree with this.
by baseballgirl on Aug 12, 2006 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions
I asked
here's how I see it
It's the haughtiness and the swagger on the field. When other teams see that, they focus that much more on making sure they get him out by any means necessary, they study tape of him and exploit the ample holes in his stroke until the cock crows. He is on their radar, he puts himself in that position perhaps a little too readily. I think also on some level he knows chicks dig him (which they should, because he is a beautiful young guy) and he plays to that a bit. Maybe this is as much a function of being a young insecure man as it is of being a rich young ballplayer with a possibly amazing career that lays ahead of him, I dunno.
Seeing the big poster crystallized a lot of stuff in my head about him that I didn't quite get before. But more than anything it made me feel badly for him because I can see that he has to go.

Notice the change in Macha,
I think Macha is managing like it's a pennant race (I wish he'd do that a bit more in May)--meaning he may not jump to insert Crosby, or bat him higher than 8th, upon his return. We'll see...

Regarding hollow victories...
Hollow victories can be classified as such if (and only if):
- A player is injured during the game
- If your main rival clinches a playoff spot or you are eliminated
- Something on the world stage overshadows sports (Never!)
But, the A's did gain a full game on the Angels (and Mariners).
They won their 8th of 9, and have already clinched the series.
I'll take this hollow victory anytime!

I hope someone sees this....
"Eric Chavez singled and Jay Payton walked in the second. With one out, Marco Scutaro singled home a run and Jason Kendall hit a two-run homer. Walks to Mark Ellis and Bobby Kielty loaded the bases and Milton Bradley drew a full-count walk to force in a run. After Frank Thomas popped up, Chavez walked to force in the final run and end Fossum's night after 56 pitches."
Now, it's really late here on the East Coast but I am pretty sure that Jason Kendall did not hit a homer last night. Hopefully they are just predicting the future......
