A Hollow Victory, But A Victory Nonetheless

Don't get me wrong. I'll take a win, and a 4.5 game lead in the division, any day of the week--even if it takes more walks and balks than you'll find in a Dr. Seuss story. It was not a pretty victory for the A's, who needed six consecutive scoreless innings, and 10 consecutive stranded runners, before they could finally add on to the 5-spot they were gift-wrapped by that wild and Casey guy, Mr. Fossum.

One more run and Chad Gaudin would have come in to finish up, but as the A's were not able to shake the Devil Rays as they climbed back into the game, and instead of Gaudin, Macha went to Duchscherer and Street, each for the second day in a row. That probably renders Duke unavailable on Sunday, and leaves Street's effectiveness questionable for a Sunday save the A's hope he has the chance to try to get. Perhaps tomorrow takes care of itself, hopefully in a good way. But this was not a win for the scrapbook.

What is was, however, was a win for the scrappy. Fossum was wild, but the A's also had a lot of good at-bats--notably Mark Ellis, who saw 7, 8, and 9 pitches in three of his ABs, Milton Bradley, who reached base each of his first four plate appearances, and Marco Scutaro, who stands out from Crosby in his relaxed, non-anxious approach with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, Blanton continued to do what he has done consistently since June 1st, 2005, and that is win baseball games. Don't look now, but Cupcakes is now a 13-game winner, which puts him on pace to win 18 games this season.

So the A's continue to do a lot right and while they're still leaving a lot of runners on base, it is partly because they are actually getting a lot of guys on base. You could do worse that to be the A's right now. A lot worse.

Crosby/Scutaro
will not even be a close call for Beane/Macha.  Scutaro will not continue hitting as well as he has, Crosby is not a .220 hitter, and Crosby is a MUCH better fielder.

I do dread more Crosby ABs.

by mikeA on Aug 12, 2006 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

It's Croz' overanxiousness,
which presents like stupidity, that is so hard to watch. Scutaro, at least, is relaxed no matter what the count or situation, and just looks to hit the ball hard. The sad thing is that if Crosby took that approach, he might accidentally hit .300 with 25 HR.

I agree
it is painful to watch, but the fact that he has so much more talent (just offensively speaking) is a reason to put him out there so he can try to work it out.  Crosby obviously has a much higher upside than  Scutaro.  Is there any reason to think that sitting him for awhile will better solve his mental issues than playing him?  It could be, but since it's hard to know either way, I'd rather have his superior defense in the meantime.

That's a good point
If his horrible offensive performance has been due to injury or if he is risking similar struggles in the future, I would probably rather see Scutaro.  But I think (sans evidence) that he will hit at least well enough the rest of the year to justify (along with his defense) the playing time that I guarantee you all he will receive.

by Erik being Erik on Aug 12, 2006 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

you are not the only dreading Crosby coming back
but Scutaro really is a fright out there at shortstop. He takes too long to transfer the ball from glove to throwing hand and there is no power toss to 1st, which has resulted in a number of safe runners that Crosby would have by a step or two.

That being said, however, when he comes to the plate there is a confidence that something good will be made to happen. Not just happen, but made to happen by someone who is actually thinking while they are up there, whereas Crosby just flails away. So no, I think we're all dreading the automatic "out" that is Bobby Crosby circa 2006.

by groversson on Aug 12, 2006 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

Scutaro is looking good at the plate.
It's certainly a nice change from watching Crosby struggle in the batter's box.

I know what you mean, with E-Lo's still-annoying ERA.  However, he kept the always good-hitting Rangers from kicking his ass out of control, has some more zip on his fastball, and probably has a confidence boost from going longer into the game Monday.

Where Is the Love?
We are winning with Scoot and Ellis, who are hitting a little and playing adequately in the field.  Why no respect for what they are doing?  Crosby may have potential, but don't forget he won the Rookie of the Year Award batting .239, if I remember correctly. He is overrated, reading what he should be, and pressing.  Scoot's the guy.  And while we're at it, why not give Saarloos some love.  He's way better than Looza and he's gracious about being pushed aside for, well, a loser.  Why is it that when we are winning, we have no respect or love for the players we are winning with?  Strange, but true.

I think there's lots of love
for Scutaro on AN. It's just balanced with a geeky realization that in fact, Crosby underperforming by a lot, can hit .240 and play excellent defense, while Scutaro, on average, will regress to hitting .240 with less range and a weaker arm.

You know the numbers....
when Scoot plays, he hits, and his average has gone up every year except last, when he still hit .247. He had fewer AB's last year than the year before, when he hit in the .270's. I don't think he is an all-star player, but I think, in contast to the mercurial Crosby, he is a solid shortstop, and I wouldn't be unhappy if he was a regular, even when Crosby comes back. The guy I want is Jack Wilson, but he has a 4 million dollar contract---but wait, don't some of our underperforming guys also have "big" contacts?  Jack Wilson, I'm sure, would love to play for the A's and finally, finally, have something to play for.  Never happen, of course.

what still bugs me about Crosby is
why the hell did ownership sign him for so much gawddamn money, for all those years, when he was still under salary control.
Same with Harden.  Was it just extra incentive to play better?  What am I not understanding?
All that money going to waste with the injuries.

by wolffpackdavid on Aug 12, 2006 9:51 PM PDT reply actions

wolffpackdavid, the reason
is sound, IMO. The "contract extension" years go through arbitration, meaning the A's will pay these guys more than they have to for a couple years but a lot less during their arby years--something the players are willing to do because it's guaranteed money and more earlier.

Beane had to trade Ted Lilly because his arby years were going to bump his salary from $300,000K to $3,000,000. Haren, Harden, Crosby, et al are locked in at a salary the A's can afford throughout the 6 years.

by wolffpackdavid on Aug 12, 2006 9:59 PM PDT reply actions

Crosby's defense is CLEARLY superior
And yes, Scutaro, based on past numbers, will not hit much higher than a .240 clip down the stretch, BUT...

Scutaro has good at-bats. He will move the runner when needed, put up a fight with the bases loaded, come up with the occasional huge hit with men on base, draw a walk once in a while, and never make you feel he is an automatic out.

Crosby is a black hole in the offense and will be equivalent to the pitcher's spot in the lineup for opposing teams, which is unacceptable at this point in the season. If Crosby already struggles with 'pressure at-bats', how much more will he struggle down the stretch playing Anaheim for what, quite possibly, could be the last playoff spot?

Scutaro is who he is, and that is a sub-par baseball player, with flashes of competence, both in the field, and at the plate.

Crosby, v. 2006, has inspired NO confidence in the lineup, and will be a liability that his defense can't save.

P.S. Nice win, bitches!

The let's go oakland chant didn't really do anything because once the chanting stopped, the wave started again. I'm sorry, but I was kinda glad the home run was hit to stop the whole thing. I said it before
I'll say it again: if Crosby were to never play another inning for this team, I would not lose any sleep.

We have played our best ball of the season since he's been gone, why mess with success?  Guy kills a rally like Raid kills bugs, dead.  Less he succeeds, the harder he tries to hit every pitch to the Fruitvale BART station.  Marco isn't Bert Campaneris or Derek Jeter but he doesn't try to be anyone but himself and he doesn't insist on batting 3rd.  I feel the lower Chavez hits in the order, the better Marco does at #8 because he sees better pitches, more fastballs, whatever.

It's not entirely Crosby's fault.  He's the golden boy becuase the management anointed him as such before they knew what they really had, or didn't have, or what might take years for them to have.  Biiiiiig poster of him, several stories tall, hanging in the stadium, Mr. Rookie of the Year.  He needs a few years to sort it out and fail so he can succeed eventually and develop into the player he could be, but this team exists on a tightrope and can't afford an offensive black hole at shortstop, particularly if it falls back to this pattern where Macha's under pressure to let the guy drift back up the order to the third spot.

We have a three-hitter now, he draws tons of walks, he takes the outside pitches with two strikes the other way, he hits for power, he sees pitches, he hits doubles.  He has become the sparkplug of our team, responsible than perhaps any other guy for the recent upsurge in offense and the idea that we have the biggest division lead this evening than we have since Sept. of 2004.  To move him out of that spot would be pure suicide, and with Crosby coming back it's inevitable he will want that spot, which he has not earned.  Another part of Crosby's act I dislike is the sense of entitlement, the unsubstantiated swagger, the hubris... like I said it's not all his fault but he bears the brunt of the responsibility.

You've all heard me say all this a thousand times but we are playing so well now, so crisply in a lot of areas, and it's a delicate balance a long time in the making which I don't want to see upset for the sake of a single player, no matter how good he is, might someday be, or just plain isn't.

The answer is that Crosby is the utility player for the rest of this year, let it be a part of his humbling and an object lesson in team concept for him.

Unfortunately, with Crosby
it could just be a "lose-lose" situation for the A's. Crosby may never mature with the A's, but may reach his potential given a change of scenery, rendering him a .280 hitting 20/20 guy with outstanding defense for someone else. But that doesn't mean he'll do it for Oakland.

precisely Nico
what really needs to happen is he needs to be shipped out of here and start over somewhere where they don't hang a picture of him the size of a building in the stadium before he plays more than a single season.

He could be a decent, maybe even an excellent, player.  But it's got all twisted here (again, not his fault entirely, just mostly) and it isn't going to work out in Oakland.  It's never easy to follow a team's best player.  I know a lot of hearts will be broken by it but he needs a fresh start.

I'm sorry but this is how I see it.

Well-said. I agree with this.
Well...except for the part about Crosby's attitude. I believe he knows he's struggling, and unfortunately, that makes him try harder, which makes him fail more.

I asked
"Does he have an attitude in the clubhouse?"  I hope he is just a regular team guy.  His hopes and opinions and philosophy are somewhat opaque to me.  In the "luck" commercial he has a pet mouse....   is that strange or what?  A lucky mouse?  Why did he agree to that commercial piece?

here's how I see it
It's not that he is bad with his teammates or in the clubhouse, my only issue in that arena is this thing about "I must hit 3rd," which I understand now is just as much management's fault as it is his.

It's the haughtiness and the swagger on the field.  When other teams see that, they focus that much more on making sure they get him out by any means necessary, they study tape of him and exploit the ample holes in his stroke until the cock crows.  He is on their radar, he puts himself in that position perhaps a little too readily.  I think also on some level he knows chicks dig him (which they should, because he is a beautiful young guy) and he plays to that a bit.  Maybe this is as much a function of being a young insecure man as it is of being a rich young ballplayer with a possibly amazing career that lays ahead of him, I dunno.

Seeing the big poster crystallized a lot of stuff in my head about him that I didn't quite get before.  But more than anything it made me feel badly for him because I can see that he has to go.

I walked by that
for the first time on Friday night on the way out, and I felt very, very sad, I almost started to cry.  It became clear that it wasn't really all his fault, whereas before I had blamed him and maybe ragged him a little too severely, because he was set up to fail by a management keen to "cover" the loss of Tejada (which was handled horrifically, with the former owners telling him to essentially fuck off even before he started his last seasonwith us) by trumpeting the arrival of this amazing new shortstop.  Then they signed Chop long-term as if to say, we choose Eric to stay because we have Crosby and he is as good as Miggy.  No position to put an unproven player with tremendous holes in his swing under right from the jump.  When he won RoY I think it got worse, like here he is, he's arrived, he is really gonna tear it up now.  All these thoughts and the progression of it all went through my head when I saw that poster, which I was to that point unaware of.

Then I thought of the Zito one on the other side and I did start to cry.

Notice the change in Macha,
lately--today, he had Calero up in the 6th to make sure we didn't give up a crooked number, and he yanked Blanton just at the right time (I thought) even though Blanton clearly thought he could go further.

I think Macha is managing like it's a pennant race (I wish he'd do that a bit more in May)--meaning he may not jump to insert Crosby, or bat him higher than 8th, upon his return. We'll see...

Regarding hollow victories...
I would disagree on classifying this as a hollow victory, Nico. While we did see Street and other PBM (Premier Bullpen Meat) toss some innings, it was a strong game overall. We didn't trail, we got the starting pitcher a win, and best of all, nobody was injured.

Hollow victories can be classified as such if (and only if):

  • A player is injured during the game
  • If your main rival clinches a playoff spot or you are eliminated
  • Something on the world stage overshadows sports (Never!)
Dictionary definitions state, "A hollow victory is where someone wins something in name, but are seen not to have gained anything by winning."

But, the A's did gain a full game on the Angels (and Mariners).
They won their 8th of 9, and have already clinched the series.

I'll take this hollow victory anytime!

being able to duck in quickly, say my piece, and know we have a great shot of winning tomorrow. It's been a lot of fun at the Coli lately, too. The crowds are getting bigger, and are definitely more into the game. It's getting exciting by the ol' Bay right now...

i agree
i don't think hollow victory is the appropriate term here.
i didn't see the game, but there were far too many innings where the offense failed to score against mediocre pitching, and so we had to use our three best relief pitchers in a game where the other team was lousy.  that is frustrating.  how about frustrating victory...

Ken Macha
A while back said that Ellis would have sat had Crosby come back after the Anaheim series but that never happened. As for the game, it was painful to watch the A's popping out on bad pitches or grounding out. Sure, there were bad moments where RISP doesn't work but you have to have a bat that works a good count to drive them in.

I hope someone sees this....
This is straight from Yahoo Sports:
"Eric Chavez singled and Jay Payton walked in the second. With one out, Marco Scutaro singled home a run and Jason Kendall hit a two-run homer. Walks to Mark Ellis and Bobby Kielty loaded the bases and Milton Bradley drew a full-count walk to force in a run. After Frank Thomas popped up, Chavez walked to force in the final run and end Fossum's night after 56 pitches."
Now, it's really late here on the East Coast but I am pretty sure that Jason Kendall did not hit a homer last night.  Hopefully they are just predicting the future......

Scutaro vs. Crosby.....Scutarooo by a landslide...
I agree with prior posts suggesting that at this stage in the season Scutaro's clutch hitting ability on a one run type light hitting team is more important than the incremental added defense that Crosby would inject. Nevertheless i predict that Macha will immediately put him back in the lineup. If he starts him above #7, it will be one more sign of Macha's inherent weakness as a manager...getting wedded to the "image" in his head of certain players rather than the reality of how they are actually playing. It is indeed ironic that the "rise and fall" of Crosby's star and his "perfect" baseball appearance must remind Billy Beane himself of the trap that his early baseball career found himself. Too bad Beane also made the mistake of signing him to a long term contract. His Rookie of the Year award is another reason I always question when A's fans chant for their player to get such awards as they also did for Tejada's MVP award. Why would I as an A's fan want a player like Tejada to get such an award when I know it will just make him more valuable on the open market and then he will be traded away. The flpside is Crosby's rookie award in a year with weak competitors. The majority of fans just don't get it but we would think that Beane and Macha would at least have figured out that Crosby is an "Emperor with No Clothes".
