Public AN Appreciation Thread

I almost hesitate to do this... but I think every once in a while I think it serves us to pick our heads up from the day to day games and offer praise to the community that's been made here...

Today, I attended the A's game and saw the team LOSE to the hated Kenny Rogers by a ridiculously lopsided score of 10-4. And yet I had a fabulous time. Do you know why?

Not just because I was playing hooky and taking an extra vacation day, and not just because I got to see the A's play at home again and not just because the weather was fantastic, and not just because our seats were very good and near the action... but because Blez, Nico and I met up with LongTimeFan and had a mini AN day showing at the Coliseum.

And as you know... anything to do with AN, especially Nico and Blez, is simply outstanding.

In fact, to tell you all the truth, I've let AN take over an increasing amount of my life. At what point do I let this hobby impact my work and personal life? I think we've crossed that line. (As Marge famously told Homer, "You didn't just cross that line, you threw up on it!")

When I first stumbled upon Athletics Nation, via a link from Daily Kos, my reaction was jaw-dropping. It was almost on the level of "Where have you been all my life?!" You mean somebody had the wherewithal to create a blog/community dedicated to the Oakland A's that offered real-time game threads, the opportunity to post opinions and commentary 24 by 7, had well over a thousand members, and featured interviews with players, the GM and coaches? If you think about it, it's rather remarkable.

In the 18 months or so I've been involved with this site, I've traded thousands of comments with thousands of die-hard fans, I've attended AN Day 2 (and have tickets to AN Day 3), my wife and I bought partial season tickets, we attended Spring Training, and even dared to attend Chez Nico I. Meanwhile, an off-the-cuff comic hobby that mocked Eric Byrnes turned into an A's obsession, as the ANtics, via AN, are seen in more than 40 countries every week and force me to find ways to make people giggle over the unintended innuendos and awkwardness of Joe Blanton or Jason Kendall. In fact, episode I made it to local TV, and hard copies made it into the hands of Eric Chavez, Barry Zito, and Billy Beane (whether they wanted them or not). It's a force I don't dare try and stop. I even learned last week that Stomper loves AN!

If you're an A's fan, the way I am, you can live and die by this team. We cringe when the "bad guys" score, when the "good guys" make outs, and when things don't go our way. But when things go well, we're jumping out of our seats to see Marco Scutaro hit a home run, or see Dan Johnson make that stretch to complete a double play. Now, with AN, we can do that as part of a bigger community, one that rises and falls with us, full of people who understand exactly what we're going through, even if we may differ in how we think the team is going to turn out, or ways to improve.

Did you know that due to AN, I hardly visit ESPN.com or watch SportsCenter at all any more? Why should I? Between the A's news, game threads, and Daily Link Dumps, there's precious little else that an unthinking sports monolith out of Bristol, Connecticut can offer.

I love Athletics Nation because...

  • It supports the best fans of the best team playing in the best league of the best sport in the whole world.
  • Everybody is different and offers their own unique spin and insight.
  • Any questions I may have about the team and history can be answered here. The collective knowledge is outstanding.
  • The professional approach by the front page writers. Combined with humor and wit, they're pretty darn good. Admit it.
  • The promotion of AN Day, Chez Nico and other get-togethers. The A's are best enjoyed in groups!
  • Outstanding interviews by Blez. Do you really think Billy Beane is going to get asked such hard questions by Jon Kruk and Harold Reynolds? And better yet, do you think they are bright enough to understand his answers?
  • Pictures, pictures, pictures, poetry, and arts and crafts!
  • Conflict! Yes, you heard me. Disagreement and discussion with the goals of bringing common understanding are good! It's fun to see people with solid viewpoints try and make their case, and you can choose to watch or participate. Your call.
  • The community takes care of itself. For a site of this size, the small amount of the above (Conflict!) is really outstanding. People are usually civil, and those who aren't self-select and weed themselves out.
  • Athletics Nation is thriving because of you. Blez has done a remarkable job keeping things moving, and utilizing his background as a reporter and as a fan to get it rolling, but you are what makes the community. I appreciate you. I appreciate Nico. I appreciate Blez. I appreciate Baseballgirl. And yet, we are just at the beginning. Think about where this site is going to be in 2 years... 5 years... Ten?

It would be great to learn just how you found out about AN, and what you like about it. Is it the T-shirts?

honestly
I have absolutely no recollection of how I find this magical place.

I think I may have been looking for a Bruins blog and googled sports blogs, but I don't really know.

I like lots about AN.
Nico's puns, GnGG's butt threads, Salb's dumps, Baby WinEx, ANtics, FIRE MACHA NOW, <throwing chairs>, sharon and jennifers crazy side conversations involving giant snowmen and basements, Moneybutt, Blez's interveiws, oaktoon's jeckle and Hyde act, foolish game's infatuation with Byrnes, my growing obsession with Frank Thomas...

How I found AN?
It was just after the Hudson trade.  I was searching online for some info on the trade and google directed me to AN. Not only did I find all the information I needed, I also found like minded people to commiserate with about the loss of one of our favorite players. We all recovered well and now share our joy, as well as our impatience, regarding the team that we love.

How I found AN...
It was just an ordinary Saturday night where I was sitting home alone "googling" various prepositions, and voila, I stumbled on AN--and the rest is future.

Actually, my friend Nick (whose user name, cleverly, is "Nick") told me I should check out a site called AN. Naturally, I ignored him, but I thought to check it out a few months later and the rest is history--but so is the part I already described, so there's nothing really all that special about "the rest" in that regard.

How I found AN
I'm a baseball nerd. Surprise, surprise. I was wondering out of nowhere who we traded to get Saarloos. AN was the first link that came up during a google search. So basically, Chad Harville got me to be an ANer. I lurked for a bit, then started posting, then posting pictures, and here I am.

Excellent post, louis.
You listed all the reasons why I love this place.

And since this has been turned into a "How I found AN" thread... ;)
I honestly do not remember how I found it... but it was during the 2004 season.

MY bro-in -law
Found this blog a couple of years ago and recommended it to me. And today, in section 112, I met Blez, Nico, Louismg, and Fangirl. It was great to meet the architect of AN and his henchmen.
Baseball is one of the greatest things in life. Even seeing an Athletics loss was fun, especially because it was a perfect day, and we took 2 of 3 from the overgrown Cats.
I"m in town until Sunday, so I hope to see a sweep of those dirty Angels.
Thanks Blez, Nico, Louismg and Fangirl!
You Rock!
Let me know if there is a Chez Nico in August!

OK, let's see...I was
trying to help my friend Lori by finding the closest NA meeting, because she was getting waaay too much into "Jane Mary" if you know what I mean. Anyway, in my Google search, I typed the letters in backwards by mistake...and little did I know that by doing this I would stumble on the best site ever!

And I remember that the day I discovered Athlete's Nation, our Hotties won by 2 points, 8-5!!! Sadly, Lori has since graduated to cocaine, which reminds me, I should try the search again with the letters in the right order. Oops...I was probably supposed to do that a while ago. :-(

Anyway, yay to Blizz and louisgm, and basegirl and everyone else who makes this place so great!  :-)

10 Things I love about AN
Blez's unique style and intellectually superior understanding of the sport, his ability to soothe all or our anxieties during times of crisis with his calm and hopeful words.

Baseballgirl's charming and witty ways. I can tell its a BBG diary just from reading. how? Well it usually involves me laughing really hard, or getting  halfway through it and realizing I have a big smile on my face. The quotes of the month are awsome and who here doesnt agree with me that a cute girl with a phenomenal knowledge of baseball isnt darn right hot? ::Cough::too bold Martin::Cough::

Nico..Well Nico comes at you like that weird uncle at a family reunion.  At first you dont know which way to run but pretty soon, hes telling you the secrets of life, and youre glad hes on your side. If Athletics Nation had an embassador to the people, Nico you would definitely be it.  As for the whole "weird" thing, well Im just kidding about that, you seem pretty normal to me, but then again Ive never been to Chez Nico-I may be unaware of any "odd" rituals.

Sharon and Jennifer - Well I still havent figured you guys out, but then again thats probably a very good thing. However I love how you guys have the ability to turn a thread completely around. One minute youre wondering what Macha is doing and the next youre picturing Nick Swisher with a whip, and a tray full of cookies - and you ask yourself "how did this happen?..oh yes, Sharon and Jennifer"

and of course-Louismg
The ANtics are a work of art my friend, and there isnt a person on this site who doesnt appreciate reading them when ever theres a new one. How you manage to find awsome pictures every week when I spent 2 hours on google and yahoo finding only mediocre pictures at best, is beyond me. Keeps the ANtics going, we love them.

and of course theres many, many more here that bring such color to this beautiful site! I am addicted to it, and am on here all the time.

I know most of us say we bleed Green and Gold, and it just dawned on me, this is where we do most of the bleeding. If our A's lose, we come here to sulk, if they win, we come here to set stuff on fire and fling poo at the Angels. If we lose a significant other, we come here and know that everything is going to be alright.  AN is a great thing to be a part of, and I also want to thank all of those responsible for making it that way. Thank you

Last summer,
I was looking on Google for info about Huston... and I think his AN interview is what came up. I lurked for a short while and started posting semi-regularly after that. And now I just can't leave. ;)

Oh, and I also never go to other baseball websites regularly... and I only watch BBTN or SportsCenter when I want to see the occasional A's highlights.

How I found AN...
last spring, hanging out in the MLB Gameday Chat during a Red Sox series (the fateful one with two walk off shots, I'm happy I didn't have to go back into that hellhole to see what things the sox fans posted) when it was being run over by crazy people (also known as sox fans) and someone just told me to came here to avoid the crazyness.

And that's it. (goes back to working on a spreadsheet for GoG scores... wait! did i say that out loud?!)

Actually you do!
In Estonia, not to mention all over Europe and Scandinavia I've been bumping into A's fans.  I saw a guy wearing an old school A's windbreaker here in Tallinn, but when I tried to speak to him, he didn't speak any English.

And then in London, at the British Museum, behind the Rosetta Stone, I spotted a girl wearing an A's hat but didn't get to talk to her either.

Then when I arrived in Helsinki, Finland, not 5 minutes after getting off the ferry from Tallinn, I walked past 2 guys both wearing A's gear.  I talked to the guys for about 5 minutes and found out that they were from Moraga, and I even took a photo of the 3 of us that somehow I must have deleted before transferring the pic to my laptop...GRR!  If the Helsinki/Moraga guys read AN and find this post, what's up!!

And less than a week ago when I was in the Nice Airport in France, I spotted a guy in an A's hat while waiting to order my lunch in some restaurant.  He and I talked for 5 minutes as well and I found out he was from Melbourne, but spent a lot of time in the Bay Area and has a lot of friends there.  He asked me how the season's been going and I told him we were in first but we've been ravaged by injuries.  When he complained about not getting to see any games I told him about MLB.tv and he was thrilled.  So hopefully he tunes in and follows our boys.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for more A's fans/gear here in the former Soviet Union.  But I have to confess (and the Public Appreciation Thread is as good a place as any) that AN is one of the main reasons I've been as happy as I have been here...particularly during the black days/nights of Winter when many, MANY people in Estonia get depressed.

Japanese tourists wearing A's gear in London
Last year I ran across a group of several Japanese 20-somethings sporting A's caps and windbreakers in a dive-y London pub... I figured they must have been Yabu fans and tried to question them about it, but they edged away nervously and refused to speak. No doubt they figured I was an Angels fan coming to hooligan-ize them with me trusty Stanley-knife.

I remember how i found AN
Talk about being beneficial from the start!!
My wife and i wanted to attend our first Fanfest so in january we were going to buy tickets and saw the area to enter a coupon code. So me being Cheap (my wife calls it frugal, i call it how i see it) i did a net search for A's Fanfest Coupon and lo and behold it gave me a comment on AN that gave me the code. Made my Day half price fnafest tickets!!
I briefly looked through AN and promised to give it another look later on. Well after meeting Eck, the Big Hurt, ronnie mac, Kotsay, Melhuse, the duke to name a few, and having an absolute blast, i thought i really have to check out this AN site thingy-me-bob.
Upshot of all this is AN is now a major part of my life. I check it several times a day to read stories, comments, occasionally a game thread. i have found that i have no need to look anywhere else for the info i crave. Anything i want to know, another member of AN has already found it and posted it. I love the camraderie, the knowledge and the fun of being part of Athletics Nation and again i thank all of you that make it happen

I first discovered AN in June of 2004
When there was a mention of it in the San Francisco Chronicle's sports section. When I typed in the URL and the page came up, it was as if I had found the Holy Grail(no not Durazo). I swear I felt like that bee girl must have felt in the "No Rain" video by Blind Melon, when she discovers all those other bee people dancing in the field. It was just a breath of fresh air to know that there were other fans out there that cared as passionately as I do about the A's. I live and die with this team, and have been bleeding Green and Gold since I was about Seven (1987, a long time ago, but only if you count it in a matter of years). This Blog by far has the most intelligent collection of fans, and like Louis said in his post, the amount of knowledge that this site collectively shares is astounding. I sometimes wish I posted more often so that my S/N would be one of the more recognizable ones, but in the long run it doesn't really matter. The amount of knowledge that I gain from AN on a daily basis is invaluable...

AN Rocks!
I found it by using the "Discover" feature on A9.com, who I subsequently started working for, then quit.  I think I've said this before, but it's really ironic that my employer's product was responsible for guiding me to something that was such a huge distraction from my job!

Anyway, thank you to everyone, all almost-5000 of you, for making this a really great online community.  Blez, Nico, Baseballgirl and Louismg, thank you for the pregames, the postgames, the interviews and putting up with the rest of us.  And the rest of you, thank you for making A's baseball much more interesting and fun than it already was!

Rob Neyer
I used to read Rob Neyer's columns religously, until ESPN made them a pay feature(now, like Howard Stern, I barely think of him at all anymore). Anyway, Neyer referenced the Elephants In Oakland blog, so I started reading that. But I got tired of the predominantly negative attitude exhibited there, so I checked out the first link they had to other A's blogs, which happened to be AN. Like others, to me it was like finding the Holy Grail. Blez's style was just right for me. After awhile, all the stat analysis started to make my interest wane, but the banter between Jennifer and Sharon had me hooked by then.

the "clique"y part
comes when any online forum gets too big. I think we're over and past that point, at about 5000...

That said, while I was poring over GoG results last night (not done yet...), there were a ton of handles I didn't recognize at all, and I was thinking that that's one of the greatest parts of AN... we're not going to say someone can't participate in something because it's their first post and all...

How I found...
It was during the offseason in November '04.  I was searching for A's news and after exhausting the usual - Contra Costa Times, Tribune, Mercury News, MLB.com, Sportsline - I Googled searching for something, I do not recall what exactly, and found AN.  It started out as a supplement to all my other A's sources but soon became my primary source of A's info.
Any A's news generally hits AN pretty quickly.  You can come here to discuss the A's with a diverse fan base.  And you can still access other articles and sites from the AN homepage.

AN Rocks
I found this site a few time on random searches but never joined until recently.  I'm so grateful I finally did.

I've learned a lot about baseball.
Love the commentary and comedy.
The diversity of the people is great.
And the pictures are second to none.

I've always had a hard time finding A's fans that are as fanatical as I am.  So it's very cool to be here.

I was fascinated with the "Nation"
The first time I heard -Nation, was Raider Rob on JT the Brick.  He was saying RaiderNation back in 97.  Then, all of a sudden, RedSox Nation co-opted the term.  East Coast Bias, being what it is, assumed the term, but I never heard the term until 2002.  I still don't know who originated the term, but I just typed the AN address and was surprised to see the activity.  Its not the most original term, but its appropriate.

Red Sox Nation
One of my suppliers claims that he belonged to a group called "Red Sox Nation" about 28 years ago but I've never gotten any proof on that one.  He said that you applied by mail and they sent you some sort of fan kit.

our red sox
is a great book that talks about Red Sox Nation. Sullivan is the guy's name, he writes for SI. One of the best baseball books ever, even if you hate the Sox.

That's funny...
...because I found out about Athletics Nation from the guy who runs Padres Nation.

Hmmm...does Nationals Nation sound redundant?

Finding AN
Don't really recall how I found AN; but am delighted that I did find AN!  As a long time A's fan...since '68 when prompted by Charlie O to "join the A's train"...first A's game was Opening Day, 1969, A's vs. White Sox, A's won 5-2...

I have been over run by KNBR & SF Chronicle coverage of the Gigantes; so it has been a joy to to participate in AN & share the joy, obession & heartbreak of being an A's fan...Blez's writing is great, ANantics are fun & the pictures are great...Stomper rocks...so its all good...

AN = Haven for the Wonderfully Insane...
What a delightful den of masterful malcontents! The brilliance of the FrontPage Fanatics combined with the wit of the wandering writers, posting comments and designing diaries that drip with insight and humor....I just love it here!

Reading a simple thread can take a left turn like a Brooklyn cabbie told you'll triple the fare if you make it to the hotel in 10 minutes. I dare anyone, no, EVERYONE not to chuckle out loud then curse quietly - or vice-versa - while perusing the comments on nearly any post. It's like combining that scene from Willy Wonka on the boat in the tunnel with deleted scenes from a SportsCenter commercial. You'll be hard pressed to determine whether that giddy feeling you have after staying awhile is like a sugar rush or a beer buzz.

I was fortunate to come across the Nation via...er...you know, come to think of it, I'm not really sure. I think it was a link from somewhere on the Athletic's website, but it may have been a fortunate Google search. Was it "Baseball Girl" or "Girls with Baseballs"? Hmm. Me thinks I just shared too much...

Regardless, I really have come to love it here, a happy addiction that I'm all to content to suffer through. Which pretty much sums up being an A's fan right now anyway, so why not do it here with similarly suffering fANs of the Green-and-Gold. There are worse places to be...

...but none better. Thanks for letting me join the insanity. Now where's the orderly. I think I need my meds. ;)

Round the world and home again
That's the sailor's way
Faster faster, faster faster

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing

Is it raining, is it snowing
Is a hurricane a-blowing

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of Hell a-glowing
Is the grisly reaper mowing

Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing

Thanks to all of you who...
Make AN and Informative and fun site.Special thanks to Blez,Nico,BBG,and Louis for their hard work.

I also found this site through googling. I lurked a few weeks because I realized that it was full of 20 and thirtysomethings and I thought most likely I wouldn't fit in. I knew I didn't have the requisite "glib" factor. But I realized that reading  the site was adding something positve to my life. So I decided to make a username and try joining in.

The teens on this site are so awesome. I work in an alternative learning program and the kids involved in it are so troubled. Reading posts from Cirquegirl,Ohad and other young ones helped me to feel more HOPEFUL about the future.

Sharing the love of the A's with others makes me happy. So thanks to all who make this a lovely site. :-)

Hmm, that's odd, because
I always feel really good about the future until I read ohad's posts.

Discovered AN...
...in August 2005.  Joined in the badinage soon after.  Found it after going to the official website and then googling from there.....lots of good memories already----this certainly is the most literate of all sports websites I've run across.....it was nice when one of our colleagues used one of my jokes as her signature for a while....and when my zen meditation on the purity of pre-season standings was praised....and when I mentioned that I had seen Lindsay Lohan at her weekly A's Nation coffee klatch at MacDonald's, one of our colleagues was very worried about Lo's physical well-being....she appreciated it....AN, I am proud to be a citizen.  To paraphrase Gilbert & Sullivan, "Wherever A's Nation's banner is planted, all other nations' banners are defied!"

I stumbled upon AN
from another poorly represented A's site but can't remember the name of it.  I am completely aware that 30-40 people on this website are great writers and then there are THE REST OF US but I'm still happy that I can share information and interact with other people who share my same passion.  The A's have been my life for so long but I never really had anyone to talk to about it until I found this place.

I want to give a shout out to Grover, Jennifer, Monkeyball, McFood, Poppy, Salb and Sharon (others too) because they ALL make me laugh on a regular basis.

My greatest thrill was the time that I spent all night trying to get my AN "In Billy We Trust" sign on TV during the Royals telecast and returning to my hotel room to find out THAT I ACTUALLY DID!!  It was so exciting to be a part of "pimping this product" and my 14-year old nephew will always remember the moment when we saw the picture on the FRONT page of AN when we were only planning on reading Blez's postgame remarks.  That was an awesome night.  Just awesome... and unforgettable.

Go A's!  Hit 'em where they ain't ;~)

finding AN
I remember that I was driven to the site because of the horrible trolling on the A's message board on AOL.  Most of it was from some person named YanksGuy that would create duplicate names and post tons of worthless drivel.  I think it may have been an article on SFGate where I first heard about AN.  I was very happy the first time I clicked over.  The fans who posted here were so much more knowledgeable.  They were helpful to those who were new to the sport.  There was an order to things, not just threads full of "Jeter sucks!", "oh yeah, Chavez sucks!"  I lurked here for a long time.  Maybe it was that new kid in school thing that made me worry about saying something dumb.  My posting slowly started by chiming in during an open game thread.  Not long after that, I discovered the haven known as the DLD.  Now I know I haven't posted a ton of intelligent or enlightening stuff, but the community here never passed judgement on me.  Heck, sometimes you play right along.  I'm proud to be part of this online community, and a big thank you to everyone here that makes it so great.

AN is great...
Connects A's fans from all over, which is wonderful for folks like us who've lived no where near the Bay Area our entire lives and hence have come into very sparse contact with other A's fans.

Heck, AN inspired me to finally make a trip to the Bay Area for last year's AN Day and attend my first ever A's game in Oakland.  Awesome!

Thank you all!

Hmm..
Lets see... My friend told me about it. I didn't quite pay attention to her since she brought it up as we were waiting for the gates to open at the coliseum, and I was busy thinking of how to get Barry's autograph. After the game, when we were on BART, she mentioned it again and I checked it out when I got home. I've been here ever since! I was actually the first one to make an account.  Although, I may not post or comment frequently, I visit it everyday. This site is fun, the info is great, I love the variety of writing styles, the throwing of chairs, the interviews and all the GREAT PICTURES! AN has helped me get through the offseason when we're all deprived of baseball and on the verge of insanity.

finding AN
i wish i could tell you all about how i found AN, it's a very twisted story, and i'd get in trouble with someone on here if i told!!!  They'd probably stop blogging!! But i am becoming quite the A's fanatic, more and more everyday, i enjoy the games a little more, and i know more about each player. Thanks for all the input.
Can I move back to NorCal?!
