Around SBN: LeBron James Laughs In Kevin Garnett's Face

Open Thread: Game 79 - A's vs. Diamondbacks

You never quite know how to feel when you face a team that is going as badly as the Diamondbacks are going right now. Are you glad you're catching them at a bad time, or do you worry they have just hit rock bottom and will get well at your expense? Arizona comes in with a 3-20 record to show for its last 23 efforts--that, my friends, is a serious slump.

Because he didn't have to pitch the 17th inning yesterday, Kirk Saarloos will pitch the 1st inning tonight. The A's hope Kirk can go a whole lot beyond that, as only Justin Duchscherer was spared bullpen duty in Thursday's extravaganza. That being said, it is quite possible that only Ron Flores is, in fact, not available to pitch at all tonight, so the situation may be far from dire.

As for the opposing pitcher, I have narrowed it down to these five possibilities:

  • Claudey O'Vargas
  • Claude E. O. Vargas
  • Claw Diovargas
  • Claudiovar, Gus
  • Claudio Vargas
Whoever it is, he is reported to be 6-4 with a 4.85 ERA. Of the 86 hits off him in 78 innings of work, 12 have left the yard. The D-Backs' lineup:

Counsell
Byrnes
Tracy
Jackson
Gonzalez
Estrada
Green
Hudson
DeVanon

The A's lineup features the welcome returns of Mark Ellis and Frank Thomas, but no Chavy:

Kotsay
Swisher
Crosby
Thomas
Johnson
Payton
Ellis
Melhuse
Perez

who got sent down or DL'd
to make room for ellis and thomas?

was chavez one of them?

by fadedash on Jun 30, 2006 6:34 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, Chavy was sent down
along with Swish. :-(

Actually, I have no idea.

Interesting out of New York: Mussina was 12 up, 12 down today vs. the Mets, then there was a rain delay, then no Mussina in the 5th.

well i was thinking
perhaps chavy got dl'd since he's hanging on a thread.

were we at 24 men before this? who the heck has left the building to let thomas and ellis come back?

They just said on radio:
Doug Clark and Mike Rouse sent down. Chavy out of lineup today, "forearms are killing him".

Moose
13 up, 12 down, Beltran reached on an error in the first. No win for my fantasy team, damn it.

Rouse and Clark were sent down. Pretty much the obvious moves, unless they chose to DL Chavez instead.

I have a question.
I don't recall Swisher batting 3rd or 4th at all this season.  Crosby, OTOH, has done it quite a bit.  I'm not a "Crosby h8R" by any means... Heck, I love the guy, but that just seems a little weird.  Anyone have an explanation for that is?  Am I making a big deal out of this?

by AsGirl on Jun 30, 2006 7:14 PM PDT reply actions

It's a bit odd, but...
at the moment, Swisher doesn't need any added pressure.  He could really use a day off, frankly.  But that's not happening tonight.

At least he hit the ball, a reasonably hard line drive that was caught, in his first at-bat.

by bear88 on Jun 30, 2006 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess I should have added that
he didn't bat 3rd or 4th even with his good start and all.  (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
Not saying the A's should just throw him there now, but it just seemed odd that Crosby has batted in those spots and Swish hasn't.

1st game in Co.
then a blowout, first game in SD, then a blowout, first game vs. Az . . .
This is when the low-key guys like Howe and Macha really hurt us . . . the guys need to be told . . . I mean, really TOLD . . . that losing these types of games is inexcusable.

We are facing the vaunted Claudio Vargas... I mean this offense has been getting hosed lately, what with having to face the Clay Hensley's of the world - and now we have to face Vargas... Just not fair - when do we get to face a gascan instead of the dosage of CY every night?
