Rock Bottom?
Several folks on the threads referred to this night as rock bottom before it even ended. I'm not so sure we can make that claim yet. Why? The A's still have to play two more games against the Royals and who knows what might happen? The way the A's bats are going right now, it very well could happen.
There is very little to say that's good news coming off losing to a team that now has a meager 12 wins on the season. But Frank Thomas is awakening. Even since Chicago, he has been raking and he has a .991 OPS in May. Nick Swisher hasn't gone into that long and protracted slump that everyone has been fearing.
Haren pitched well, but the A's need to score more runs against Setherton. This is a guy who has a 6.08 ERA and had a 6.62 ERA for the A's last season. Either that or they need to get to Mike Wood, a guy with a 5.42 ERA in his career and a 5.04 ERA this season. Or they should've gotten to Mr. 50/50, Ambiorix Burgos, who up until tonight had been 5/10 in save opportunities. He also was sporting a 7.23 ERA.
In addition to the news on Harden coming back soon (keep your fingers, toes and any other available appendages crossed), this is some of the news on the other missing Athletics:
Righty starter Esteban Loaiza, DL'd since April 29, with a strained trapezius, will pitch for Sacramento on Wednesday. His return date likely will be determined in part by the radar readings -- the A's would like to see his fastball at 88 mph or higher. He topped out at 86 mph during a simulated game in Chicago last week.
Outfielder Milton Bradley, DL'd retroactively to April 27, with a sprained knee that led to a strained oblique, will take batting practice with the team on Tuesday. Barring a setback, he's slated to start what's expected to be a brief rehab stint somewhere in the Minors this weekend.
Is this really rock bottom? Who knows, but I'm suddenly dreading the next two games in this series like a trip to the proctologist.

I'm sorry....
There ain't a big trade on the horizon, unless beane gives up at some point and trades Zito... or unless he can find someone to take Crosby, but then who would play SS??
You can;t fire the players.. but somehow..someway a spark must be lit.
I find his lineup tinkering annoying and a contributing factor to the team's poor hitting;
and his pitching decisions increasingly strange-- like tonight. Sure he's working with a AAA bullpen-- but he's exacerbating the problem.
I think BB has to pull the trigger on this one soon-- this is too good of a team to be languishing ever closer to last place.

I'm not sure it's
When healthy, we'll be better--but Haren still won't be very good after 120 pitches on a night when his fastball isn't sinking and he doesn't have his good command. That's where Macha's judgment scares me. A good pitcher, when he's totally gassed on a mediocre night, isn't better than a AAAA pitcher. Not that it necessarily mattered tonight.

Note similarities to last year...
Today's game was frustrating. I should know as I was there to see it firsthand.
You can't fault Macha for Haren giving up early runs, for Jay Payton muffing a play in Right Field, and throwing to second allowing the runner to score from first on what was really a long single...
You can't fault Macha for the team's ace (Harden) pulling a muscle on a defensive stab.
You can't fault Macha for the team's free agent pitcher (Loaiza) being a shadow of his former self.
You can't fault Macha for Duchscherer coming up lame, for Crosby's many injuries, or for Huston Street proving he's human.
You can't fault Macha for DJ's slump. You can't fault Macha for Ellis's slump, or Scutaro's slump, or the fact that Antonio Perez looks completely lost.
Sure, you can fault Macha for lineup machinations, for leaving pitchers in too long or pulling them too early, but as professional ball players, the A's have to be able to score more than 4 runs (two coming on solo HRs, and one a bases loaded walk) against a team like the Royals and a pitcher like Etherton.
If you look at the game's finish, you have to believe the right players were in the game with it on the line, with only the possible exception of Kendall. It was Chavez who hit in a double play to end the game, and Thomas would have been the tying or winning run on deck. Who would you have preferred up there instead? Melhuse or Kielty?
I don't always agree with Macha. I muttered a few things tonight. But as with last year, we are trying to keep afloat when things are not exactly going our way. I believe the team needs more "grit and intensity" --- yikes... but something that shows urgency. That can come from anywhere. A change at manager would not do it for this team, and we're very lucky Billy Beane knows that.

Don't be sorry...
Macha's tinkering with the lineup limits our players ability to get settled and feel comfortable. Seems like we have a lineup that works well (Zito's game against Texas) and then the next night it's completely different.
And is it just me? In his last start, Macha takes Haren out when he really wasn't pitching that badly and wasn't at a high pitch count. True, the bullpen came through that night, but that's an aberration.
Then, last night, he leaves Haren in... I'm not sure which was the right/wrong decision, but I just don't get his mindset.

Ellis-didn't like that contract during the off season either. time to bring up ginter and his 3 million, send down scoot (3 for 60, or something!!!) and sit ellis and platoon him or make him a supersub.

three positives of tonite:
- DJ flied out to DeJesus -- yes, DeJesus, as in the CF DeJesus. so, thats an improvement.
- Crosby made contact not once, but twice. looks to me like his eye is getting better, which means he's right in line with the cosmos and it is really, in fact, the tail-end of may.
- FT homered. which is all we can ask from him.

They're hanging in there. They're not 15 games behind the next team. The Mariners and the Angels aren't doing so well either. The A's just need to keep within reach of the Rangers until the cavalry arrives. Really, they could be doing much worse considering the eviscerated bullpen.

I worry why there seems to be no real fire or at least some anger at losing to one of the worst teams of all time. Hell, KC was 3-22 on the road before last night.
There needs to be some fire...from somewhere....and we know it isnt coming from the current manager. Maybe another Chavez bus speech is needed?

To borrow (and tweak) a line
It's like there's rock bottom, then 50 feet of crap, and then the A's.
That's how it feels sometimes. I just keep telling myself: "this is the Rivercats staff, this is the Rivercats staff, this is..."
When Harden, Duke, Kennedy and Witasick return, the entire pen will be transformed and all these average-at-best relievers can go back down to the minors where they belong.
Of course, none of that eases my misery at watching the Royals, THE ROYALS!!!, dominate our hitters all night long. I mean, did we ever get the leadoff man on base? I know the Royals did more often than not. But let's address one drunken-stupor-inducing aspect of the team at a time. F'n May.

Crapola
Justin Duchscherer (RHP, OAK)
A couple of weeks ago, the news that Duchscherer had some minor soreness in his pitching elbow was met with little concern around the A's. That false hope is likely to change with the latest news.
While doing some rehab work on his pitching forearm and elbow, he felt pain in his pitching elbow. This was just some lightweight work with his wrist, and his elbow started barking at him. This suggests the main tendon in his forearm is either the source of the pain or it is rubbing up against the painful area in his pitching elbow. He underwent an MRI on the elbow, but the cause of the pain was not discovered conclusively. This prevents the medical staff from treating it with a cortisone injection until they know the exact cause.
The A's haven't provided any additional information, but this latest report hints that he's back at square one and a quick 15-day DL stint is a fleeting wish. It's not out of the question this setback will push his return to sometime after the All-Star break, perhaps late in July.

by bluelightrain84 on May 30, 2006 12:19 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
My heart hopes it is a bad spell,
However, as much as I hate to say it, it would be half-a-miracle to get Harden back at full strength for half of the remainder of the season. I love the guy, but he is the baseball version of Grant Hill. Loaiza? The guy needs to stop spending time on his side burns and spend more on getting his velocity back. I still love the Bradley trade, but seeing Andre Ethier hit .303 in his first 65 at-bats with the Dodgers makes me cringe. As for the 3 bullpen guys, sure there presence is solid, but it is hard to get too happy when our offense only scores on solo shots and weak grounders with a runner on third. Take a look at our offensive "leaders" through today:
Swisher- .303
Kotsay- .281
Chavez- .279
Kendall- .265
Payton .252
What does it say when Jason friekin' Kendall has your 4th highest batting average? Or, when Jay Pay is fifth at .252?!?
Bottom line is that this time last year Chavy went crazy and gave the team a lashing after a loss in Atlanta. He felt the sense of urgency based on the mediocre performance from a young team. My fear is that this years urgency is lacking based on the comfort of knowing that the cavalry is due back soon, which it is...But, will the cavalry be enough?
