Two Thomas Bombs, But "Small Ball" Gets The Last Laugh

Tonight, you got two questions answered: Why the White Sox are reigning World Champions, and why the A's struggle to score runs. The last play of the game was a beautiful example of not waiting for offense to come to you. A lousy hitter surveying the field to see how he could best get a runner 90 feet farther and forcing the defense to do something. If Jason Kendall does the same thing against Armando Benitez, the A's have one more win to fall back on later in the season. Hopefully, someone in the A's organization is taking notes, because when the opposition puts on a clinic against you, at least you should learn something from it.

But the story tonight really was the A's injuries. In the 8th inning, Ken Macha went to Justin Duchscherer, but it was Steve Karsay and Karsay surrendered a homerun. Then Macha went to Joe Kennedy, but it was Randy Kiesler and Kiesler gave up a ringing double. So he turned it over to Calero in the 10th, but Calero had already been used in the 7th so it was Ron Flores. And don't forget about Mark Ellis. Ellis flags down Thome's single and the White Sox' first run never scores. He keeps Mackowiak's 10th inning single on the infield, Pierzynski stops at second, and a game-winning bunt is not an option. Injuries caught up to the A's in a big way today.

Finally, Macha did one thing tonight that really frustrated me, just as it did in the Angels' clinching win in 2004. That day, Octavio Dotel stayed in the bullpen as Macha elected not to ask him to get 5 outs. An Erstad double off Rincon and a tie game later, Macha put Dotel in--and asked him to get 5 outs. A closer either is, or isn't, available to get a certain number of outs. If Macha was willing to ask Huston Street to get 4 outs today, then Street should have been in to face Uribe. And if he had been, the A's likely would have won it in nine today.

Two awfully tough losses in the last three days. You can only absorb so many of those, as it's a long season--but not that long.

Hmm
Yeah hopefully Machatron can learn something from this. BUNT is not a four letter word in baseball.

I don't know how
You can ask Thomas to bunt with one out and a man on third. The guy was crushing the ball all night until that pitiful AB.

Sounds like
You're giving Huston a pass. Now, I didn't watch the game, but it looks like the guy blew it. You blame everyone else for blowing their opportunity, but not Street? I love him, too, but that homer was a killer.

It's too bad ... the story could have been "Big Frank gets revenge" ...

by Crosbino on May 22, 2006 8:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Street made one
bad pitch. It was the first one he threw. If he gives the HR up to Uribe, we win 4-3. If he gets Uribe (who doesn't matchup well against Street), we win. Yes, Street threw a bad pitch and I'm concerned that his velocity still isn't great, but there were so many reasons outside of Street that this one didn't go in the win column. And another--which I didn't mention--was Zito's 6BBs, which drove up his pitch count. If he goes 7, Calero has the 8th, Street the 9th. A's win.

by Nico on May 22, 2006 8:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But on the other hand
we're limited by the few trustworthy guys we have in the bullpen. So soon after he's missed time wiht an injury and a lowered velocity, I think Macha may be right in trying to get as many outs from the rest of the bullpen. It's difficult for me to make excuses for Huston in this situation. The best closers in baseball lose games sometimes, and he lost this one.

by nycfan on May 22, 2006 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have no problem with that,
but then let Kiesler (or whoever) try to finish the 8th and hope you're still ahead. But don't put Street in to get 4 outs anyway, just in a worse position.

What bugged me about Dotel's appearance was that he was batting arm problems and I thought it was fine that Macha went to Rincon and not Dotel in the 8th. But then with no more outs, he put Dotel in and left him in for 5 outs.

It's the inconsistency that bothers me. If you're willing to put Street in for 4 outs, then put him in with no one on base. Don't be greedy trying to avoid putting him in and then put him in anyway when there aren't any more outs, just less margin for error. And Mackowiak was a good matchup for CWS, but Uribe was a great matchup for Street.

A closer with an ERA of 5.00 is a problem
His velocity is down --and isn't getting the swing thrus he was getting last year.

I am also pretty sure he wasn't ready - Macha forced him in without enough warm up. I would have let it ride with Karsay.

Worried me again, if he goes 7 Calero comes in in the 8th and Street closes but the what if's of baseball seldom ever work.

so you're
going to pin this on him? That's crazy. Six innings isn't the same as seven by any stretch but he did a good job and deserved the win. It may have only been one bad pitch from street but it's reasonable to expect him to get outs.

As a #1, Zito should be going deeper into games.
Walking 6 batters and going 3-2 on most others, isn't going to work.

by DeeWayne on May 22, 2006 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right, he should go deeper
but he's not going to every time, and a ball club should be able to handle a few innings. I know that our 'pen is chewed up right now so we can't attack them but we can't blame Zito for this one either.

Small Ball
The A's seem to feel like they can just wait for a walk and eventually Giambi will hit the ball over the fence.  Only problem is ...

Man, it's infuriating to watch this club sometimes.  If they would just scratch out a run here and there, but they refuse to do it.  Earth to Macha:  when you're ahead by 3 runs, you don't need a 3-run inning.  Just one more run makes a huge difference.    Also obviously so painful to watch this club "hit" with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs.  Isn't that why they got rid of Hatty and fired their batting coach?  Big Frank had a terrific game, but how many check swing called strikes is he going to put up this year?  Hey, when's there are two strikes, be careful, but when the winning run is at third and there are less than two outs and only one strike, either swing or don't.

As for Crosby, called strike one, called strike two, called strike three.  Wow!

I think that's a great point
about how big one more run is when you're up 2 or 3. As for Thomas/Crosby, Jenks was flat out nasty those two ABs. I actually thought Thomas battled well just to avoid the K. Croz really had no chance.

by Nico on May 22, 2006 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here's the long and short of it:
Huston blew it.

He served up a complete gopher pitch. That's it. As much as our bullpen has been completely ravaged by injuries, when you hand it over to your closer with 2 outs in the eighth, a two run lead, and a pinch hitter who had yet to hit a HR that closer better freaking nail it down.

We were in a position to nail that game down, and Huston couldn't do it. It happens to the best of them. But the moment he blew it, you had to think we were going to lose. The AAA A's bullpen is no match for the ChiSox bullpen.

More than anyone else, WE MISS YOU DUKE. And Ellis and his awesome defensive range at second.

EFFFFF.

Injuries
The injuries, especially to the bullpen is what lost this game. Macha's hands are tied. What is he suppossed to do? I mean we have guys like Keisler and Flores out there.

I know good teams play through injuries, but even the GREAT Chicago White Sox would have a tough time if their pitching staff was so beat up. I know that is hard for some to believe but it is true.

That bunt play was good, but that play never happens if the A's have a healthy Kennedy and Duke. I sure hope the players on the A's have more postive thoughts than I read here.

by RudiFan on May 22, 2006 8:42 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

You can't just throw up your hands
and go "well, we're beat up, nothing we can do." The fact of the matter is that this is PRECISELY when you need the great managing to come out - when you have to guide your team with limited resources. Unfortunately, it seems that Macha has rarely shown that kind of vision.

Then again, there's not much you CAN do when you bring in your closer when you need him the most and he can't deliver.

Sigh. Losing sucks.

by nycfan on May 22, 2006 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorrry....
But I am not "throwing my hands up". I am just stating a fact. I love all the managerial experts in this forum. If the A's win this game they would be lauding how Macha handled the bullpen tonight.

by RudiFan on May 22, 2006 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think by and large,
people are being pretty reasonable, considering it's been 15 minutes since the A's absorbed their second crushing loss in three days.

Remember, there are fans, not analysts, on AN.

by Nico on May 22, 2006 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know that Nico
It just bugs me that Macha always seems to get blamed for every loss. I don't believe he is a great manager myself, but find me a manager that wins consistently with a injury riddled pitching staff.

I guess in the big overall picture the A's are still only one game back of Texas. If the can hang around until they get healthy then I see no reason why they don't win the West.

Tonight was
Exhibit A of why this team is so frustrating and why I have learned that it just isn't worth it to get all bent during the ups and downs of a 162 game schedule.  However, when you bolt work early to get home to see this one and spend the next 3 hours feeling confident and all hell breaks loose, well, you're bent.

The A's get well against the M's, win a thriller on Friday night, have Halsey hang in there against Schmidt, blow a couple of chances to win on Saturday and get blanked yesterday.  So they go to Chicago, the reigning champs who didn't want any part of the A's in last year's post-season.  FT has a glorious return, Guillen gets tossed, the best available starter is cruising but still can't keep that pitch count down, the closer comes in after seemingly being back in form, promptly gives up a tying home-run, more chances and a failure to make the return more glorious by FT after Employee #3 wisely got his ass down to second.  That was the game right there, we all knew it.  Now the White Sox have the momentum and may have turned the corner around them pesky A's.  Hopefully in 48 hours the A's will have taken the series and this will be a short-lived stick in the eye.

by southofcruiseamerica on May 22, 2006 8:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll give the A's this:
Kendall's (rather perplexing, actually) attempted steal, and Chavy's alert avoid-the-DP running, along with Kotsay's heads-up dash to 3B, were along the lines of trying to create, rather than sit back. And with Thomas and Croz, obviously you're just going to let them hit, and hope--and Jenks made the pitches.

by Nico on May 22, 2006 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm with you Tina,
Chavez made up for not being down there when Kotsay went to 3rd, but on the replay Kotsay did go back to second briefly and that could have prevented Chavez from going. He did make up for it though. I'm not questioning effort or strategy, just airing big picture fan frustration. It's still not as bad as Dotel last spring at Fenway though.

This series won't mean squat down the road -  just when they're up 3 in the 8th on the road against the defending champs in the first game and blow it the negative implications creep out.

Yes, I think DJ was simply pinch-hit for because a lefty was in and Kielty would have batted righty if the pitching change wasn't made.

No, DJ is not ok in that his swing is slow and his average is awful.

I've always wondered
how people how say "We find ways to loose" deal with it when they want to say something like "we need to keep it loose". Do they just go ahead and figure it must be spelled "looose"?

Nico's ....
...point about 'small ball' is virtually ignored, but it's a good one. Here we have the World Champions and they aren't afraid of it - they won the game with a combination of long ball and small ball. Every team has excuses and there is no lack of them on this board, but the truth is that this is a one-dimensional team by choice! Besides not working, it's boring!

So when, in this game,
would you have bunted/stolen a base/ran more aggressively?

I guess Kotsay taking third and Chavez stealing second weren't enough.  Mark should have tagged on Big Hurts pop out.

Not...
...talking just about this game. How many 1-2 run games, low scoring at that, do you lose before you say to yourself, "Self, let's try some other things, even (horrors of horrors) small ball and JUST SEE if we can get an extra run here and there. Gee, if the world champs do it, maybe I can steal (yes, that too) an idea, or two, from them and WIN. At the very least it will keep me from dozing off on the bench".

The pleas for small ball will largely
go ignored.  That's just not this team.  It's not what it was designed to do offensively.  Frank Thomas and Bobby Crosby did what it was designed to do tonight.  If Street did his job, this would've been one for the win column.

It's frustrating because Los Kirk against Vazquez scares me tomorrow.

I do agree with you Nico in the sense that if you're willing to use Street for four outs, why not five?  But the problem then becomes, someone will say why not six or seven outs.  Not only do the A's have so many pitchers on the DL, but it seems like Street has a problem right now too because his velocity isn't where it should be.  Does anyone ever remember the A's, outside of Hudson's oblique, having this many pitching injuries when Peterson was here?  That's not to insinuate anything, it's a serious question.

I brought it up on the

The A's did well with the homeruns and clutch hitting and were doing well until the replacement bullpen and Huston came in, no? Sure, one or two extra runs would have helped, but this team is SO banged up, we should be happy with ANY win at this point and look forward to June and July. I HATE MAY! Is there any other team as banged up as the A's right now?

by A'sfansince1970 on May 22, 2006 9:28 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Sure, Huston lost it,
as did Thomas by popping up when the A's could have retaken the lead, and so on. But there was a lot of context to Street's matchup with Mackowiak. Closers get zoomed in on, but what happens before (and sometimes after) is all part of the puzzle that is a game's outcome.

Scutaro
  • Scutaro needs to be sent down to AAA, at least.  He is over matched at the plate, and doesn't look to be into it mentally in the field (Today's grounder by Thome.  Yesterday's non-relay throw).  Give Perez a couple starts.  Bring up (dare I say) Keith Ginter.
  • Was Street even ready to come in for Keisler?  It seemed like they rushed him into the game in the 8th.
  • I had to listen to the WhiteSox TV during tonights game.  Wow.  Enough "He Gone"'s, and "Stretch"'s for lazy fly balls.  Saying how the strike zone was complety one-sided for ZITO....some of the worst homerism ever witnessed by these two ears.
  • I'm sure Ozzie Guillen will get props for being thrown out of the game..."Having his players backs", etc...what a joke.
  • The game winning bunt was so predictable.
  • Swisher and Chavvy are starting to look very mediocre at the plate.  Time for others to step it up.

Trying to keep perspective
The A's are still at .500, only a game out of first and still 5.5 ahead of LAA. A year ago on this date, the A's were in last at 15-26 and 9 games back of the Angels.

Despite the injuries. Despite 70% of the current bullpen having started the season in the minors. Despite the inconsistent offense. Despite major regressions (so far) for Street, Blanton and DJ. Despite the two guys who have carried the team starting to cool off.

All that said, the last three days have sucked big time.

But do you seriously believe that this team, even
with everybody healthy, can get past the 1st round of playoffs? Given the lackluster offensive performances, I don't think so.

by DeeWayne on May 22, 2006 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely, Dee Wayne,
because,
  1. They would just have to get hot for a week
  2. Who knows what their lineup will be--historically if Beane sees potential, he makes a second-half trade to bolster the team
  3. Starting pitching is key, along with bullpen depth. Healthy, the A's have both.
And I concur with dylan travis. How can you not like the A's position--the one team picked to give them trouble is in free-fall, and we're all of a game behind Texas, one month before the Rangers historically free-fall themselves.

The A's are a few healthy players away from running off 8 wins in a row, and the are an 8-game winning streak away from taking a stranglehold on the division.

i have to agree

by AinOz on May 22, 2006 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As far as division standings go, the A's are fine.
But as far as a baseball powerhouse, the A's are no where close. I just don't see things changing for a few reasons:
1)Zito's a #3 pitcher, not a #1 (sorry ladies)

2)Crosby's the same player stat wise from his rookie year and I don't see that changing (sorry Pete Gammons).

3)Frank's stats haven't really changed for the past 3 years and they're not improving this year.

4)Other than Harren and Swish, last year's rookies are in a terrible sophmore slump which I think will continue through the year (especially in the case of DJ and Blanton).

5)Ellis had a career year which will never be replicated.

6)Kendall and Chavy will put up similar numbers to last year.

by DeeWayne on May 22, 2006 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But that's just taking
the most negative view of each of the range of possibilties. Here's the "flip side" (most positive):
  1. Zito's a #2 (if you disagree, name 7 better #2's in the AL).
  2. Crosby is in the stage of his career where he will get better, not worse. Why not think he'll improve throughout 2006?
  3. Frank Thomas is already showing signs of locking in. Even without having done well, he has 10 HRs in 44 games.
  4. Why should players have a full sophomore slump just because you decree "it shall be"? Blanton is already well ahead of his pace last year and we know how that went from 6/1 on.
  5. Ellis, the past 3 weeks, has approximated his 2005 numbers, so he's already proving you wrong.
  6. Have you been watching Chavez?
Now, the truth is, in fact, somewhere in between your gloom-and-doom and my overPollyAnna.

by Nico on May 22, 2006 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh...come ON...
  1. Zito could play #1 on many teams. He's the best we have. Period. And don't tell me that Harden is better. Harden may have better stuff, but it's too damn bad that we'll only see that stuff for half a year. Zito is our ace and has done nothing except pitch like it since his very first start this season. If you can't see that, you obviously haven't watched his starts. Yes, he will throw a lot of pitches. Yes, his starts sometimes are maddening. But he gets the job done, day in and day out, and our team has hung an undeserved "L" and a "ND" on him in the last week when he really deserved two "W"s. Sucks for him. Yet he'll go out again and pitch well in four days. That's what he does. And also? You can shut up with the 'ladies' comments. I'm here for the pitching.
  2. I agree with your assessment of Crosby. Hawk nattered on and on about Crosby being the most 'underrated' player in baseball. I do not think that word means what he thinks it means. Crosby, if anything, is rated on a scale that he doesn't even register on. But to be fair, he had a great game today, and if you actually saw the game, you'd know there was no way in hell he could have hit any one of the three pitches he took for the strikeout.
  3. Frank Thomas will do exactly what we needed him to do. Just wait.
  4. Huston threw a bad pitch. Blanton is better than he was at this time last year. Yes, DJ sucks right now.
  5. Look up Ellis' numbers. I'll wait.
  6. Based on what evidence? They're both hitting really well right now...something that...let's see...they never really did at all last year.

by baseballgirl on May 22, 2006 11:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So your dreamy comment about Zito is referring to
his pitching?
A rebuttal:
1)I'm not saying he's our top pitcher and wouldn't be on most teams, but against top tier teams, he's not good enough to lead off a playoff series.

2)Crosby did have a good game today but he seems to be a streaky, injury prone player who at this point is mostly "potential".

3)I hope but I'm just going off how players usually perform in the twilight of their careers (other than barroid).

4)Huston's been a little off all year and given Joe's stuff, I don't see him pulling a late season '05.

5)Ellis is a career .274 hitter who's now hitting .252 after hitting .316 last season ( http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=5086)
So given his history, he should finish '06 between .280-.270.

6) Chavy is Chavy and his stats are remarkable consistant (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=3953).
Kendall is on the same pace as '05 (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=3401) and he's on the declining part of his career (for catchers it's worse).

by DeeWayne on May 23, 2006 6:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Try context...
1) My 'dreamy' comment was taken from part of an extremely funny exchange about our team on the Giants' blog. I'm looking at Zito as a pitcher.

I'm not saying he's our top pitcher and wouldn't be on most teams, but against top tier teams, he's not good enough to lead off a playoff series.

Please go look at Zito's pitching line against top tier teams in the playoffs. He owns big games, and has been one of very few A's pitchers to do so.

  1. Correct. I agree.
  2. Me too.
  3. We'll see.
  4. Ellis hitting .270-.280 with some pop is everything we need from 2nd base.
  5. I'd like to think Chavvy will have a better year with some protection. Yes, I'm concerned about Kendall, too.

Morning.
Sorry, first line should have read "I'm not saying he's not our top pitcher"

Other than than no-slide Giambi game, Zito hasn't come up that big in the playoffs (http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/Z/barry-zito.shtml). In '02 as a #3 starter, he lost to the Twins and he also lost the deciding game against the Sox as a #3 starter in '03.

I just don't see our team scoring more than 3 runs in an opening game of a playoff series vs the likes of Clemens, Mussina, Colon, Schilling, Beckett, and Garcia. So in order to win, Zito and the bullpen would have to hold the other team to 2 runs or fewer. At this stage, that's not going to happen. Sorry.....

Zito's postseason record
Hasn't come up that big?
  1. Beats the Yankees in Game 4 on the road to keep the A's alive.
  2. Loses 1-0 to the Yankees in the no-slide game, but pitches great.
  3. Beats the Twins in Game 3.
  4. Beats the Red Sox in Game 2. Loses Game 5 on 3 days rest.
Overall (courtesy of your link): 3-2, 2.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP. That seems pretty big to me.

Facing the likes of Clemens, Schilling Mussina,
Beckett, Colon, and Garcia; a 2.76 ERA unfortunately is not going to cut-it with this lineup. Sorry.

Yes, I do
I agree with Nico's points above. The division is ripe for taking. As far as winning in the first round, it won't be easy but it is certainly possible, even without a great offense. If Zito, Harden, Haren, Calero, Duke and Street are on their games, the A's can win any playoff series.

I miss Duke in the 8th
That is what is wrong here.  Duke is so valuable to this team.  Please hurry and get well.

Hey we're still .500
All things considered, I think we are in good shape within context of our division...although I still feel ashamed that there are only 4 teams in the AL West compared to 6 in the NL Central.  Is that ever going to get balanced?

by znk916 on May 22, 2006 10:19 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Can't be balanced
unless two teams are either added or subtracted, and I don't either happening anytime soon.

I went out for my usual 2 hour
community volunteer type meeting most every Monday and happily forgot the aggrevation of the way the game ended...now I am back, it's all coming back.  Media blackout imposed.

I hope we at least take the series...that will help me (me, thinking of me, me, me, me)

the great playoff miss of 2004 followed by the good try of 2005 But will 2006 do the trix?

was there tonight. bummed
we were there for the whole thing tonight, and man, what a bummer.

some thoughts;

Thomas's fireworks were...um...AMAZING! The place had just given him a standing O for the first AB, and it went deathly quiet, weirdly so, like they were all thinking about how it was when he hit 'em for 'em, not against. 2nd? mostly boo's, scattered with a few cheers, and me yelling "go DEEP, Frank, go DEEEEEEEEPPPPPP!"

Scutaro at 2nd tonight, in the end, was a killer. that play should've been a double-play.

DJ loooked bad swinging, and in a funk after the last K, where he swung at a funky (read "bad") pitch.

Ozzie's a dick, and I'm sure he'll be championed in the papers like someone else has already mentioned. to me, he's still a dick, and it makes me happy for Macha.

Street looked hittable and then nasty, just at the wrong times.

Rob Macowiak? Are you kidding me?

Crosby's shot was a bomb, almost in the same place as Franks right before him, but Franks seemed like it was headed for the moon. Epic. Truly a stunner for that whole crowd, and one of the best baseball moments ever for me to witness.

Sending Kendall not such a bad idea, in that it meant Swisher had another chance at it next inning, which he almost crushed outta the park.

Zito. 6 BB's. weird. had to make some nasty pitches to maintain. Feel like I jinxed him by tipping my A's hat while he was on mound, and I swear he tipped back, and then was out after that inning.

I like Scutaro, but I think...how do I say this...needs to be Menechino'd. Either that, or Perez, um, needs to STEP up, or I'm all about giving Ginter another chance...

cold. very cold...until about 6th inning, several beers into it...warmer...cold.

choakland. hearing Sox fans chant that walking outta there made me want to vomit on someone's new Sox hat.

more notes from tomorrow's game.

'fish.

Could you do me a favor?
If you have a free moment tomorrow night, please remind A.J. that he's a bum and he always will be, fancy ring or not.

You don't have to be nice about it.

Thanks in advance.

The problem with being happy with .500
or using that as a silver lining is that it can rapidly disappear. I'm trying to stay positive because there definitely were good moments (Zito, Big Frank for the first 3 at bats, Calero) but here's the problem: what if the Rangers are actually going to play at this level and the Angels pick it up (which they're likely to do)? I think both teams are a legitimate threat in this division. At some point, we may look at games like these and wish we had won them, because it's 1/4 of the season gone and who knows what happens next.

Ok, pessimistic rant over. I apologize. I just have a difficult time looking at the upside, because until this team actually beats the good teams and not just the bad/mediocre ones, it's hard not to get a little worried.

Some Props for Chicago Fans
Ok, I don't know what it was like to be there live, but what I can tell from the TV, it was a pretty amazing moment for Thomas's first AB.

I didn't see this earlier cause I was on my way home from work and just missed it. (I turned on the TV just as the ball went into the crowd, so yes, I did see Bobby's HR! =D) But I TiVo-ed the game and just now watched the first 2 innings.

I have to say, I was very touched by the response that was given to Thomas coming to bat. From what I could tell, there was a lot of respect given to him and it was a very nice moment. Then even after he hit a home run, there was still a lot of cheering and standing for him. It seemed like a really nice moment for Thomas to enjoy.

I am very happy that the Chicago fans were so mature and kind to him. He totally deserves it!

I just wanted to share my reaction to that moment cause it really touched me.

fans and Thomas
The fans were a HUGE surprise; I thought for sure, and had told everyone I was going with that I thought they'd boo him.

Au contraire (at least for the first 2 at-bats;-) - it was a standing O, which makes the first shot SO amazing. It went from that deafening roar of applause to silence, and the place was stunned.

It's too bad the A's lost
Saturday and Monday, because if you stand back as a dispassionate outsider, those were two great games. As a passionate insider, however, they were heartbreakers.

I should point out that this wasn't a game the A's lost any more than one where the White Sox did a heck of lot right in the last 3 innings. Mackowiak had a clutch pinch-hit. Jenks threw the ball great when he needed to. Ozuna got the bunt down perfectly.

And if the A's are halfway healthy, they still win it.
