Open Thread: Game 14 - A's vs. Opponent

Sorry for the early and generic entry, but this is my only chance to post a game thread for today. The A's, currently 5-8 in the Cactus League, take on an opponent today, sending someone other than Danny Haren or Joe Blanton to the mound. Here is the starting lineup for the A's:

Good OBP
Decent bat control
Very Good Hitter
Excellent Hitter
Very Good Hitter
Decent Pop
Good Potential
Good Potential
Gets Hit By A Lot Of Pitches

If you haven't heard them already, be sure to check out Blez' audio interviews with Eric Chavez and Bobby Crosby, and with Justin Duchsherer, in the threads below this one.

great lineup
with this lineup, the A's should win a lot of games this year.  That is particularly true when you add Frankie.  Go team and win.

joys of spring
i love Good Potential, he's got all the making to be a top of the order hitter.  although, i don't know about hitting him behind Good Potential, i think that he might just get in the way of Good Potential.
Nick's an outstanding defensive first baseman...He's going to want to talk and he'll drive people nuts. They won't want to get to first base if he's there-Beane

Not *entirely* off-topic
once you've linked to Eventualism.

Isaac Hayes is quitting his role as chef having just realized that South Park can be insensitive, gosh sometimes even offensive !

Of course it took satirization of his religion (Scientology - see, there's the connection) for him to reach this startling conclusion.

Bad Tivo!
Did this happen to anyone else??

I Tivo'd the US-Korea game last night. It completely skipped the 7th inning, when Huston pitched! It went straight from the 6th to the 8th. Or did ESPN just decide not to air the 7th inning? (It's a conspiracy -- the East Coast Media doesn't want the world to see Huston.)

I ended up paying for MLB.com so I could see our boy pitch. He looked quite good.

I also enjoyed the Jeter error and watching A-Rod whiff. That never gets old.

by SportySpice on Mar 14, 2006 9:08 AM PST   0 recs

Dude.
I knew the seventh inning was missing! I thought I fell asleep and missed it.... I'm not crazy! Woohoo!

I think this happened because ESPN aired the game tape delayed and just cut it out to fit better in the programming schedule. Wouldn't want to miss showing "Who's #1?: Greatest NCAA Tournament Buzzer-Beaters" and "Get Wild With Cindy Garrison" IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!

Exact same thing happened to me.  I thought the game ended too quickly and then deleted the game from my tivo.  When I saw Huston's name in the box score I was pissed I deleted it.  Now I'm happy to hear that I wasn't crazy, that I didn't really miss it after all.  No kidding--nice job tape delaying it and then cutting it up to get to that stupid buzzer beater thing.  Like it'd kill them not to re-run sportcenter one less damn time.

Game was on the Dish - Huston looked great
I watched the game live and Huston looked good.  Very intense, tongue sticking out, focused.  A-Rod booted a simple ground ball or it would have been 1-2-3 and done.

If Japan beats Mexico and Korea and the US beas Mexico.....3 teams would be 2-1 and it would go to a tiebreaker.

Lets get this right
The standings are:
Korea - 2-0
USA - 1-1
Japan - 0-1
Mexico - 0-1

The remaining games are:

JPN vs MEX
KOR vs JPN
USA vs MEX

So lets just assume that the USA wins vs Mexico.

Lets also assume, for posterity sake, that Korea loses to Japan.

USA would be:
2-1 with wins over JPN and MEX.

KOR would be:
2-1 with wins over USA and MEX.

That means that it comes down to Japan vs Mexico.

If Japan wins vs Mexico and Korea, they will advance.

If Mexico wins vs Japan and the US, they will advance.

If the US wins vs Mexico, they will advance.

Remember, the 1st Tiebreaker Rule is the team that won the head-to-head matchup.

Rosenthal says different Zonis, I don't know.
Team USA isn't assured of reaching the final round even if it beats Mexico on Thursday night in possibly the final start of Roger Clemens' career. Japan must lose one of its next two games to guarantee that the U.S. would advance with a victory.

If Japan beats both Mexico and Korea, the U.S. could be eliminated before it even plays Mexico due to the WBC's tie-breaking formula -- fewest runs allowed in games between the teams tied.

by theblackpearl on Mar 14, 2006 11:51 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Not sure, Zonis
One of the possible outcome is for USA, Japan and Korea to all end up with 2-1 records, in that case head-to-head wins amongst the three teams is not helpful in determining who advances, so a second-tie breaker must come into play, right?

by baseballfob on Mar 14, 2006 12:37 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

could be a three way tie
and the tie breaker is runs allowed--

japan, korea and US-- the 7 runs allowed to the Koreans are not good for us.
