Cupcakes? Well, Happy Birthday to Me!

As a newbie to AN, I am still trying desperately to figure out what I need to know. This site has become my crack and I keep kicking myself for not finding it sooner. After trying to search through the mountains of diaries, I have come to the conclusion that maybe I should take a chance and post one myself.

I know that a lot of you have been here since the beginning of this site, which is very cool. You have also been very supportive towards new members, which is very appreciated. My only complaint is that it is hard to get into discussions when you have no idea why there is poop being flung and why the players are locked in a basement.

So for me and all the other newcomers, I was hoping that everyone could help out and give us some insight to the nuances of the AN lingo and users. Why is Swisher called "Porn"? Why is everyone throwing chairs? Anything that you would like to add, including stuff about yourselves would be appreciated. Of course, if this had been done before, please direct me towards the exit.

Welcome!
  1. I don't know why monkeyball throws poo.
  2. Players locked in my basement... Hmm.... This goes way back to the days of AN v.1. I don't remember what exactly started it, but I decided to build "Superplayer", a combination of the best parts of everyone in the AL. I kept the players locked in my basement until I could clone them. The basement was said to be guarded by Mo Vaughn and my granny. Things snowballed from there.
  3. Why is Swisher called "Porn"? Sharon.
  4. Everyone throws chairs because Billy throws chairs. We heart Billy.

Monkeyball likes to
poop in my pants.  He recently explained why.

Look, KendallGurl18, you seem like a nice kid to me, so I'm going to let you in on a little secret.  Leave AN.  Get out now.  If you wait until the season starts, you're screwed.  You don't want to be around here when the A's lose three games in a row.  You don't want to be around here when Eric Chavez strikes out.  It's a scary place, and we explore the nether-regions of our soul.  It's too late for me.  But I might be able to save you.

how that started. I'm searching the AN history books.

by Jennifer on Feb 8, 2006 8:02 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That was me ...
... and, yes, to explain myself, it was indeed a means of parodying the CAPS-addicted, spelling-challenged, panic-ready, foul-mouthed, invective-spewing Day Game Denizens. And, y'know, insulting Jennifer and Macha simultaneously. And parodying those who would insult Jennifer and/or Macha. And flinging poo.

KendallGurl18, I won't echo Salb918's exhortation to LEAVE NOW, but I will advise you to, um, prepare yourself if you wander into any day-game threads during the season. That's when the Trolls come out.

Seriously, AN is addicting. I found it through random search (I couldn't remember WHO we traded to get Saarloos, so I did a search, an AN was like the first result to pop up. I've been hooked ever since.) I wouldn't say LEAVE AN... but... this is like catnip for A's fans. Or monkeynip, whatever.

Cupcakes is Joe Blanton, so named by GreenNGoldGirl (be scared of that one ;-) just kidding!) because well, it looks like the man has enjoyed a cupcake or two (million) in his life. And is it really your birthday?

FIRE MACHA NOW is a running thing... that... honestly I don't know how it really started. It appeared as an option on a poll, and now it's almost a default last option on every poll.

I've only been here since last May, so I don't know EVERYTHING... but this is a fun, yet addicting, place to be! Welcome.

The Mostly Silent Minority
Some of us:
  1. Think Kenny Mahca is a good citizen and a fine manager.
  2. Believe that Billy Beane is losing his hair at an alarming rate.
  3. Would trust Ron Washington with our lives.
  4. Get hives from the acronym VORP.
  5. Think the Coliseum is perfectly fine place to watch baseball.
  6. Still look at batting averages first.

by Mission1929 on Feb 8, 2006 9:35 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

need to believe in one to believe in all six.  I for one, don't gives hives from VORP nor do I look at batting averages first.  But I do think Kenny Macha is a good citizen and a fine manager.

Essential Stuff
Welcome. More girls on this site is good. If you really want to dive into the AN experience, you should be ready to take positions on the following vital debates that will consume the board now and then.

Does Chavvy have heart?
Is Scutaro clutch?
Is there such a thing as clutch?
High sox -- hot or not?
Does Harden have the best butt?
Should Harden do yoga?
Is Danny's hair too long?
Is Zito's hair too long?
What would Crosby look like with hair?
Hate Giambi -- Yes or No?

Those are some great questions! This diary is awesome! I have been reading everything everyone has writen and just sitting here cracking up. Of course it is making me feel old since I remember all this stuff.

Anyway, everyone covered the most important things. A few more little details:

  1. Open Threads will get hijacked and turned into Butt Threads. Be Warned!
  2. Pictures are always good!
  3. The High Socks crew has a grass roots campaign to get the whole team to wear High Socks! This effort is being lead by GnGG, so please chat with her if you would like to join in the effort.
  4. Some of my favorite things on this site are the ANtics: ANtics Archive and The First of 2006
I have to echo some who have said, "LEAVE NOW!" It is good advice if you plan to have any kind of life this summer outside of baseball. Of couse I don't know why you would want that! But if you do decide to brave the season with us, Welcome! Can't wait to hear more from you!

excellent idea
we're going to work on step 1 (transfer of tape). We'll let you know when it's digital.

I was thinking of putfile or some such, but bittorrent makes sense too.

Actually, I was really thinking of charging $20 a copy.  We're going to see if greed or laziness wins.

by Apricot on Feb 8, 2006 4:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I have a fear
That once Apricot sees the tape, laziness will win. The tape I have is really complicated and organized in my own special way. Once we get the tape transfered, I am hoping to do some serious editing. The whole reason I made the tape in the first place was for me to edit the highlights out of it.

Anyway, as soon as Apricot and I have it figured out, I am sure we will let everyone know.

about the $20
On one hand, I definitely hear you; It's time and effort to be rewarded.  At the same time, however, $20 seems pretty bit steep for something that we all love and come together to talk about even in the offseason.

Not only do I have some questions about what I'd be paying for, but I guess I just felt like this might be a community that would share something like this without monetary compensation.  If laziness wins out and you decide to share, I'd love to see the clips.  If not, count me out and I'll put my $20 towards an mlb.tv subscription or something A's-2006 related.

Money, for me, just doesn't grow on trees; I tried planting a dollar bill once and it just got dirty and wet...

one "D"
I personally think the Link Dump should be called the "Link Dump".  Others have their own wacky variations, DLD, DLDD, DLD^3, etc..

Oh, kendallsgirl, anyone can open the Link Dump... it's whoever gets around to it first, unless certain selfish people hijack it for days on end.

Also, if Sal3487 opens the link dump, it's a plea for abuse. Abuse of Sal, that is.

I don't know if that has an origan so much

Welcome to AN...
Good lord, I guess I have been around for awhile now. Of course, I used to never, ever post. This is indeed a place for the wierd, odd, fascinating, intriguing, demented, sociopathic, schizophrenic, bipolar A's fans. You don't have to be all of those things, but it helps to be at least one. Oh, and apparently we welcome simians too. But who am I too complain, I am named after a cat for crying out loud. Enjoy your stay, and if you really felt like you needed to vent all your emotions about the A's, this is the place. Oh yeah, on a positive (ok, I mean serious) note, this place is also one of the best communities you'll ever find. Welcome, and have some fun. Good luck, and be careful hanging out with THOSE girls over there (I can't be specific, it's a matter of National Security). Very careful. You've been warned.

I think I speak for the majority of AN when I say
we do love Kendall and his heads-up, face-versus-spikes hustle, and his involvement in the two plays of the year (Sulk Off and The Tag).  BUT we really wanted him batting 9th and for him to take a few more days off.

by Apricot on Feb 8, 2006 3:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I heard...
That in order to actually get Kendall to take a day off, they drug him up in the morning so much he can hardly speak or move. Otherwise, they'd probably have to drag him off of the field kicking and screaming.

KendallsGurl.. you should also know who Cindi is.
Cindi is a teenage girl who happens to be one of the many people living in Nico's head.  She doesn't really exist, but ssshh, I didn't say anything!  The last time I made the mistake of saying that Cindi doesn't really exist, Nico... er.. Cindi got all defensive.  :P

And please don't commit the cardinal sin of calling her CINDY.  It's CINDI, with a heart over the SECOND i, except for on Fridays.  I'm not sure why that is.  I don't make the rules, I just follow 'em.

PS:
Happy birthday!!!

And by the way, if I ever refer to Kendall as KenDoll, don't be offended.  I think "KenDoll" started because "he throws like a girl", but I say it because I like that name.  KenDoll.  :)
