CHAVEZ AND CROSBY UPDATE
Susan Slusser writes:

Manager Ken Macha suggested Sunday at Papago Park that Chavez might DH every other day in order to rest his chronically sore right shoulder (as a preventative measure), and the third baseman might sit on back-to-back days if need be. Crosby, Oakland's shortstop, will be brought along even more slowly. Crosby threw at a distance of 120 feet Sunday ("Best I've felt,'' he said), but he, too, might serve as designated hitter from time to time.

More items of interest from the same link:

  • Harden will throw to batters today, and his next outing could be in a simulated game. Harden is now participating in all fielding drills.
  • Gerald Perry was pleased with Thomas' second day in the batting cage.
  • Of the new pitchers, Chad Gaudin has drawn the most notice.
  • Dan Meyer, Shane Komine and Adam Johnson will pitch against South Africa on Saturday. Don't expect to see many regulars in that game.

He could have sat out the final year on his contract, earned $6m, Albert Belle style, and worked on his tan.

sorry if this already got quoted over the weekend
I don't recall seeing this exact blurb in any of the places where "the end of Bradley's silence" was being discussed...

Susan Slusser's Sunday notebook included this:

Bradley speaks: When new outfielder Milton Bradley arrived in camp, he suggested he would not talk to the media all spring, but on Saturday he was accommodating to all. First Bradley spent 20 minutes or more signing autographs, and then he spent 15 minutes taking questions from reporters, with the stipulation that the topics stuck to baseball and the A's, who he called "the team to beat."

Relaxed and pleasant, Bradley said he isn't even thinking about his surgically repaired left knee. His goal for the season is to stay healthy because in past years, when he has set goals, "anytime I get close, I get injured."

When asked if he plans to take on a leadership role, Bradley said, "I plan on getting in right field - not have opinions, not cause problems, just go with the flow."

I bolded my favorite parts to prove that I actually am not just a picky ol' scrutinizing meany... ;)

Warnings from Williams
"Earlier this month, White Sox general manager Ken Williams sent a warning to the Oakland Athletics' camp that Frank Thomas needed to shut up about White Sox business."

I'm beginning to pine for the days when the Yankees were World Champs after the out of control ego displayed by the White Sox, Red Sox, and Angels.  What makes Kenny Williams think he can control what former players say to the media.  Frank is ours now, and he has every right to speak about how he was treated.  A warning? I wish Mr. Beane just picked up the phone and told Mr. Williams to suck it.  If we are lucky enough to win it all in 06, I hope that afterwards, we had the class to not act like spoiled brats.

"We've added a little more bling to it, so to speak," Macha said.

here's what happened
from sfgate.com:
Player-to-be-named joke: A complete unknown appeared on the A's updated roster without the team ever making a move.

Jairo Garcia, the A's top minor-league reliever, is now known as Santiago Casilla. That is his real name; Casilla used false documents when he signed his first contract, something that is not unusual in the Dominican Republic but that has been less frequent since a post-Sept. 11 crackdown on visas.

"It's something we didn't know about, but he came forward with the information, so I commend him for that,'' general manager Billy Beane said.

Garcia/Casilla has aged 2 years and 10 months; he's now 25. He'll have to be issued all new papers, which could delay his arrival at spring training.

It's going to take the A's some getting used to. Beane referred to Casilla as "Jairo'' several times.

"I'm sure we'll all just keep calling him Jairo,'' Haren said. "That's such a good name, too.''

I'm sure that becoming a new person and aging three years overnight might have its advantages in some circles.

Aww, thanks for posting these!
That pic of Frank Thomas? Kind of adorable. I think I'm gonna like FT on the team. :-) Z's cracked me up, that's so... Zito. Haren needs to stop looking stoned. Even if he's bloody adorable. And someone REALLY has to take that bat away from him. Now.

DJ's new number makes me sad. :-( I hope that was just a decoy or something, man... I liked him as #11, it suited him. Plus, Hatty as 10 and him as 11 was so lovely and appropriate. :-(

I want Rheinecker on the team. In general. Him and Flores are the minor league lefties in my heart.

Thomas' response to KW
http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060227&content_id=1324748& ;vkey=spt2006news&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak
On Monday morning at Papago Park, Thomas told reporters that he'd spoken with Williams on Sunday night and considered the matter closed.

Thomas, who characterized his talk with Williams as lengthy and heated, refused to directly respond to some of Williams' harsher comments, which included calling Thomas "an idiot" and "selfish."

"Idiot? Selfish?" Thomas said. "There's nothing there worth a response. ... It's childish. It's time to move on. It's all a bunch of noise to me. ... As far as love lost, there was not much love there, anyway."

A's manager Ken Macha said that he thought the war of words between Thomas and Williams was "funny" and noted, "[Jay] Payton was a problem with the Red Sox last year." Traded to the A's at midseason after complaining about a lack of playing time in Boston last season, Payton was a model citizen with Oakland.

Added Macha, "[It] looks like we've got a rivalry going [with Chicago now]."

Macha's ready to kick some ass.

How funny would it have been
if Macha went completely nuts on KW?

Welcome, Mr. Thomas
What a terrific, measured response to an out-of-control, organization.  Kenny "Crybaby" Williams is held to a higher standard.  He's the frickin' boss.  Under federal employment law, he should refrain from derogatory comments about ex-employees.  Apparantly, Frank called Kenny last night and they had it out. Might the personal animosity between these guys prompted Frank to seek Billy out at the Winter Meetings?  Why not produce for the man who mentally dominates your nemesis?  Its clear to me now that the reason the White Sox organization is crass and classless starts and ends with Kenny the Crybaby.

Haha, for once, Macha is awesome.
I'm with him. Bring 'em on.

Good response by Thomas. Best thing he can do at this point is just ignore anything else by KW and let that be his last statement. Since Kenny is apparently nuts.

Chad Gaudin
What's his role with the team, long relief, 'mop up duty', I'm still confused as to how he fits with the A's plans.

Will Carroll on Bobby Crosby
Everyone seems worried about Bobby Crosby, filling my email box with concerns after the reports came out of Oakland that Crosby was dealing with shoulder tendonitis. It's tough to get solid information out of the Oakland camp, so we'll just have to watch and wait. Shoulder problems have been a big part of why Crosby hasn't yet lived up to his potential, so it's no wonder a lot of people are on edge. The A's are also closely monitoring Frank Thomas as he gets back to hitting. He's not ready for live batting practice and will never be fully healthy, but the A's think they can get 300 or more ABs from him this season. If so, that's going to be a big advantage.

So, from the discussion, I shouldn't be worried
that Thomas might still be a selfish, whiny malcontent?

May have been whiny
But, even his former rival, Konerko said that FT has been a model teammate for the last 3 years.  Crybaby Kenny is definitely wrong here.  He went way over the top.  "He didn't return my call" was his response.  Even Cashman of the business-like Yanks assured Sheffield he was wanted.  Players are insecure, they want courtesy calls.  They don't want to hear about it on the news.  The Big Hurt is super-motivated.  I'm not worried about his selfishness because it is exactly his quest for 500 that will bring us back to postseason glory.

These photo day pictures are cracking me up.
If Frank Thomas moves his arm, it looks like he could knock out a whole city.

Observations: Bradley's got attitude, Haren looks stoned, Bocachica looks like he's trying out for a modeling position, Bynum looks very chiseled and heroic, Kotsay's kinda scruffy, Z's just funny, Haren looks even more stoned, Chavvy cut his hair :), and Swish looks like he put on a little weight.

Ah, I love pictures. Yay for ST! :)
