Fremont City Council confirms move! A's to play at Cisco Field

[EDITOR'S NOTE: It looks like it's becoming official very quickly. Probably still a lot of technical hurdles to jump but the groundwork is definitely there. Ladies and gents, your Silicon Valley A's!!! - Blez]

Fremont city officials confirmed the rumors after meeting with Wolff today. The A's are moving to Cisco Field in Fremont. Name change hasn't been decided on however. They may be the Fremont A's or Silicon Valley A's, however no name change is certain. They could still remain the Oakland A's in their new park so keep your fingers crossed on that. No word on anything else like team color or Stomper's fate. However I wouldn't lose sleep over either of those. Wolff is a smart guy.

I love the A's, and will continue to do so
but I'm sorta leery of management this winter. I still haven't quite forgiven them for letting Wash slip to the Rangers, and now this. It's not a big deal in a number of ways, but if we become the "Silicon Valley A's," I'm sorry, I'd just shoot myself in the head. "Oakland" isn't quite accurate, and yet I can't conceptualize of my beloved boys in green and gold in any other way. And the colors had BETTER stay green and gold, no color-changing like the Diamondbacks are doing for whatever reason. And no ludicrous name, either. Or we'd get double what we gave the LAAAAA, and if we end up as Silicon Valley, we'd deserve it...

Still..

by Amnesiac727 on Nov 8, 2006 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

No kidding!
As much as they might want to push people to shop in the area, separating parking from the stadium is a bad idea.  "Shuttling" people in is even worse.  No one wants to be stuck at the stadium for an hour after a game just trying to get back to their car.  Can you imagine a night game getting out at 11/midnight?  That would be ridiculous.  Sac & North Bay fans wouldn't get home until 2 or 3 am.

by DMOAS on Nov 8, 2006 10:14 PM PST up reply actions

seriously....

In Atlanta, the Marta rail system (sad excuse for public transportation, but that's a totally different topic) does NOT go to Turner Field.  It goes to Underground Atlanta (don't get me started on how pitiful that place is) and fans are "shuttled" to the stadium.  It "works", but it's really a pain in the butt.  The lines for the buses are insane when the game ends.  You are totally at the mercy of those buses and the game schedule.

I don't know what traffic is like near the Fremont site, but due to lack of public transportation and people's hatred of the shuttles, the stadium traffic is an absolute nightmare.

Sorry to FUD, because a new stadium deal should be an upbeat and exciting piece of news.  I just know from experience a stadium with lack of good transportation can be a major pain.

Difference between Atlanta and the Bay Area...
...is that Atlanta has always had a bad rep as far as transportation.  96 Olympics anyone?

The Bay Area's public transportation has been the best around.  They've got three years to figure it out.

by monkeyball on Nov 9, 2006 9:59 AM PST up reply actions

I'm very confused
at how Wolff expects people to show up at this ballpark if there's no public transit and no parking.

Shuttles are a very scary, unreliable idea -- I can't believe that he'd actually go with a plan like that. He'd better be building a super-secret underground light rail with new technology because... dude. Shuttles? Feel the gouging.

And being forced to walk through a Wolff-owned capitalistic orgy for two miles as the only alternative isn't very fun.

In terms of sheer safety after night games, forcing people to travel a long distance in the dark in order to get to this mysterious "other parking" or to access transportation is... freaky.

North California A's?
Here's the problem with new names thus far:

Silicon Valley A's - Clunky to cheer for, and too easily dated. And lame. And REALLY lame.

East Bay A's - Looks good in print, but try saying it out loud and it's all ay-ays.

South Bay A's - See East Bay A's.

San Jose A's - See East Bay A's. And people would call us the San Hoes AAA's.

Fremont Athletics - "Where the fuck is Fremont?"

California A's - You just know that'll end up being the Cali-for-ni-A's. And state names are lame.

All of which leaves one obvious solution, and one that'll be fine by everyone involved....

OAKLAND A'S.

I hope they keep the Oakland A's
Every NBA season I think, THEY'RE NOT IN DETRIOT! they're in Auburn Hills. Which is ~33.17 miles from Detroit. I think it was Blez who mentioned that fact.

But I really hope they keep the Oakland Athletics. Gotta buy new jerseys, clothing. (like when Kobe changed from 8 ->> 24, really wtf?)

And traffic will suck, Hopefully if its projected to be 2011, CalTrans can build a special exit or something w/ 4-5 lanes (only in my dreams).  Or they build some light rail or something from Bart to Cisco Field.

But since there will be no more $2 Wednesdays, we could always go to Costco and get a hotdog and drink $1.50? No? ok guess not

This new stadium better be the shiz...
cuz people are gonna be pissed trying to get there through that 880 tar hole. Yeah it is just 20 miles more but it is possibly the busiest stretch of freeway in Northern Cali.
Nearest planned BART station is a mile away! Are u kidding me. Might as well move them to Vegas for all the money they are not gonna make on this.

I like it
anyone who has ever tried to drive up 880 from the south bay to an A's game is gotta love this

Seems wolfe wants to make this a new must be at destination, If people spend time at a baseball park shopping when there is no game, that cant be anything but a big plus for the A's

I give the guy alot of credit for original thinking

and for keeping the team in the bay area

its a long long way off, but its reassuring

by forester on Nov 9, 2006 5:21 AM PST reply actions

obviously the idea is that
the loss of fans from around the Bay Area will be made up by increase of fans in the South Bay...plus if the ballpark only holds 32,000-35,000 they won't need many fans.

From the Cisco ballpark demo that was online the idea seems to be packing this little park with lots of high tech ways to spend more money.

Blame SF and Oakland
Both cities have done nothing to keep their team. Now they lose their teams. It's simple renters agreement. You wouldn't hang around an apt complex if the landlord won't fix your leaky faucet, the hole in your roof, and replace that carpet the neighbor's cat pissed on.

Doesn't 32,000 seem small
I mean, the whole point of the move, I thought, was to generate more money, new stadium, etc.  I think the reason attendance is so low in Oakland is because of a lot of factors.  Wouldn't the move sort of eliminate all of those reasons why they aren't making money?  I think you've got to go 38,000-40,000.

by sprtsnwyn on Nov 9, 2006 7:16 AM PST reply actions

they expect to make $$
with sale of luxury suites and bulk seats to corporate sponsors in and around Silicon Valley. The other way they expect to make $$ is through a whole slew of techie innovations (as demonstrated by Cisco) that the fans will pay extra for. Finally, the fans that can actually get to this tiny ballpark (they are probably expecting mostly from the South Bay since fans in the rest of the A's fan base will have a terrible time getting there) arre hoped to be a captive shopping audience.

For those who complain that the Giants new park is all about everything but the game... that park will seem like Fenway compared to this one!!

This is great news for NRAFS
It will hurt less not living in/near Oakland if the team is playing in a suburban asspark too far from everywhere and not accessible by BART and they're called the Milpitas Flash Drive A's of Cotati.

Note Fremont Mayor Bob Wasserman's comment
on names:
``It's not a settled issue,'' Mayor Bob Wasserman said. ``They have an interest in having a good, clear identity, probably a regional one. We have an interest in the name Fremont. There's a feeling we'll try to accommodate both of those.''

I read this as meaning, "You can call it what you want, Lew, but you better get Fremont in there."

Thus, I think the "of Fremont" appendage is a real possibility.  If they're going to do that, I favor just calling them the Oakland Athletics of Fremont, to maintain the brand identity they've built while placating Fremont.  Unless, of course, Fremont and Cisco are willing to get Fremont into the name of the facility (e.g., Cisco Field of Fremont).  Then all of the above possibilities remain in play.

South Bay
How can they use South Bay A's when they play in Fremont? I have lived in the bay area my whole life and Fremont has always been an East Bay city. Am I wrong here?

by MShake on Nov 9, 2006 9:14 AM PST reply actions

Thank you!!
This has been my argument for YEARS!! I live in Fremont and so many people try to lump us in with the South Bay! It drives me bonkers! If anyone has looked at a map of the Bay Area for longer than 2 minutes, they would see that Fremont is EAST of the Bay! Therefore, Fremont is EAST BAY!!

Sorry, this is just one of my pet peeves! I am an East Bay Girl and proud of it! So it ticks me off when people try to say I am from the South Bay, cause I am not!

I live in Milpitas
just about 1/2 mile from the Fremont border and we are considered south bay.  I personally do not care one way or the other if I am south, east, west or north as long as I am by the bay  :-) For me, the Athletics will always be my team and I do not care where they are physically as long as I can go to the games.

Call them whatever you want.  As long as they don't move out of the Bay Area I really don't care.  I don't care about retarded slogans, etc.  I just want to be able to go to a ballgame occasionally and root for my beloved A's.

If they do change the name
and it looks like they will.  There will be criticism from people because its change.  But no matter what we name them, people will get used to it eventually.  The LA Angels of Anaheim was rediculous when they first changed it, but now I don't even think about it.

On that note...why don't we just call them the New York A's.  I bet we'd sell 200,000 more tickets a year to people who just don't know whats going on and are gravitated to "New York" teams...

by wordfromthewise on Nov 9, 2006 10:10 AM PST reply actions

Oh, I...
...think about LAnaheim still.  It's still ridiculous.

And now what will the losers across the Bay call the 49ers?  They say, "San Francisco."  Some pol is talking about legislating that a team that leaves a city leaves the name.  I'm sympathetic.  Because it would shaft the awful Ahn-hels  and force a name change.

Which would be bad because we would have already taken "California" for our As.

by Dan_Honolulu on Nov 10, 2006 6:01 PM PST up reply actions

Oakland A's to stay?
I don't know if I believe this, but the Glenn Dickey is on KNBR and said that it's part of the A's lease for the next few years with Oakland that even after they leave they will keep the name Oakland A's. So there is no way it's changing according to him.

by Athletix Man on Nov 9, 2006 3:56 PM PST reply actions

That doesn't make any sense.
I doubt Wolff would be unaware of it, and he's already thrown other possibilities out there.  I suppose it's possible, since the JPA will still be their landlord.

If it's true, then the name really would be the Oakland Athletics of Fremont.

is your editors note about the move itself, or the name change to Silicon Valley A's?

Please, tell me youre talking about the move..

by digsthelongball on Nov 9, 2006 4:00 PM PST reply actions

Maybe they'll change the name to
The Oakland Athletics of the East Bay via Fremont.  And they can change the uniforms to the ones the D-Backs just dropped.

I'm of the opinion that the less change the better.  If everything stays the same except location, I'd be happy.

by Half Massed on Nov 9, 2006 4:29 PM PST reply actions

it's easy
just name them "athletics". nobody needs to know geographically where they are, i asume most people already know that anyway. the home jerseys could have "athletics" on it, and the away could have the old "A's" logo. simple.
