DLD 11/29/06 - Calling in sick?

Okay, so I'm going to make sure that there's a DLD this morning so that y'all have something to do....of course, if you are tired of working, perhaps you should call in sick.  (I especially like the helpful tips towards the end -- who knew that irritability was a symptom of Lyme Disease??)

For those of you single folks between 19-29, The Government is targeting YOU...

Oh wait, this is a baseball site....let's see, Boston close to adding Drew, St. Louis added Kennedy and Wells, Yankees had the highest bid on Igawa, Boston can't change their bid.

Oh, and for football fans, Cal is going bowling in San Diego.

Welcome to the Link Dump. Dump away.

So...
There will actually be a good college game at Qualcomm this year? SDSU has well, uh, kinda sucked. Students pretty much just go to games, drink, and then leave for parties at halftime. Gotta love that Aztec spirit.

Oddly enough, there are TWO bowl games at Qualcomm My guess is that only one would qualify as a "good college game", but who knows....

Good Game
If the Holiday Bowl is anything like it was the last time Cal went it still won't be a good college game.  Hopefully this year will be better.

Our company doesn't have 'sick days'....
they give you an allotment of 'paid personal absence' hours which you can use without notice any time, so it takes the onus off of lying. Of course, when you use those up and you don't feel like coming in, which is just about every day this time of year, then you have the same problem.
does anybody else have the winter time blahs like me right now? Seems to happen this same time each year.

Neyer checks in
Clint (SLC Ut): I know I am just trying to be positive, but if the A's sign Piazza for 2 years, doesnt it have the potential to work out fine? Piazza has no real health concerns, still swings a decent bat and has a better chance of staying healthy than Thomas.

SportsNation Rob Neyer: (12:07 PM ET ) I think Piazza's a good fit, except I don't know that the A's can afford him. And I think they could do a lot worse than just let Dan Johnson play DH against right-handers.

Alan Embree / Joe Kennedy
"The A's are reportedly speaking with the agent for well-traveled lefty reliever Alan Embree. Signing Embree would enable the A's to move Joe Kennedy back to the rotation to replace Barry Zito, instead of joining a free-agent spending frenzy that shows no signs of letting up."

I think Kennedy would do well as the 5th Starter.  He struggled in Colorado because he stopped throwing inside.  After watching him last season, he is back to throwing his fastball in on hitters hands.

by Colorado Fan on Nov 29, 2006 9:34 AM PST up reply actions

BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Kennedy + starting = horridness. Remember, he started some games in 2005? They did not go well! However, whenever he has pitched as a reliever for the A's, he has done great! Now, I know that we don't have a fifth starter at the moment, but we already tried JKen, he sucks.

by Philip Christy on Nov 29, 2006 10:21 AM PST up reply actions

Kennedy
I wouldn't give up on Kennedy as a Starter.  He was thrown into the fire in 2005.  You can't base your opinion of him by some random starts for the A's in 2005.

Look at his 2004 (Age 25).  He's still young.  He's still learning to pitch.  He had one outstanding year in Colorado.  Then, he lost confidence in 2005 (similar to many other pitchers in Colorado pre-Humidor)

I would list my Starter5 internal preferences as:

  1. Gaudin
  2. Kennedy
  3. Saarloos
  4. Halsey
  5. Windsor
  6. Komine

Not a very insightful piece
Maybe it's just because us AN-types have heard this so much, but I though the article just rehashed the obvious--Raiders deal made pols afraid of stadiums, Jerry Brown sent Bobb and Uptown site packing, Fremont had been patiently waiting in the wings.  And though it's mentioned, they gave Wolff a pretty easy time on the set-up-to-fail Oakland smokescreens.  And they repeat the WMD-style faux truth that no Fremont equals leaving the Bay Area altogether.

I was sort of surprised to see this get so little AN play, especially given the quotes from AN'ers at the end.  But I guess we all have relocation fatigue.

Sordid tale of JP Ricciardi
Great guy, but he could stand to shut his trap once in a while:
"If your word doesn't mean anything any more, and your signature don't mean anything, what kind of world do we live in," Ricciardi said. "It's all right. It worked out for the better. ... If he feels uncomfortable, we don't want him here. I was disappointed in the fact that the player would go back on his word and a new agent just came in and said we have no deal."

Barajas at first was represented by Gregg Clifton and Terry Bross, then switched to Dan Lozano, who had represented Barajas previously. Ricciardi said Lozano wanted to reopen negotiations, but the Blue Jays wanted no part of it.

"The original two agents agreed, and they did a great job - a super job," Ricciardi said. "Your word is supposed to mean something. What does that say to the agents you just did a deal with? You're going to get a new agent and start renegotiating?"

To be fair to Ricciardi...
He had agreed a deal with Barajas, then the players union called the guy and suggested he could get better money elsewhere, then suddenly he's cut his agents and wants to renegotiate.

I'd have told him to get stuffed too. And what's with the PA sticking their nose into other people's deals?

Agree on the PA.
But JP has made it a point to air his greivances publicly.  That's not the sign of a good manager.

agree
its a little whiney.  Its freaking Rod Barajas, not like the jays are missing out on the next Ichiro or something.

Yes, but...
..when your alternative is Greg Zaun, Barajas looks decidedly god-like.

She takes a nice shot at Anna Benson.
Pleasantly surprised that she's not a dolt.

Kind of weak
that the Phillies' first mention of him is to say they don't think his shoulder is any good.

Is it dump over for FSU's tired act?
All of a sudden AN won't load on my work web browser.  Nor will any SBNation sites or even Daily Kos (where I rarely go and never post).  All such attempts time out; occasionally I get a "Page will not load" message vaguely referencing a DNS error.

Any techies have insight?  I'm a'feared that my employer has labeled me a problem user and is blocking a whole series of IP addys which resembled the ones I spend so much time at.  Though the loading problem isn't unique to me; other users on the network appear to experience the same thing.  And I don't get the alarm bells that happen if the network thinks I'm accessing porn, gambling, or hacking sites (so anonymizers are out too).

If nothing changes, I'll either be an evening and weekend poster, after many of you cool kids have left.  Or, I'll get fired and can post all day long, until I have to sell my laptop for gruel to feed my chillens.

Pujols is crying because he didn't win the MVP.
Albert Pujols thinks he was snubbed. The        St. Louis Cardinals' slugger is upset he lost out to Philadelphia's Ryan Howard for the National League MVP award, saying Wednesday the honor should go to someone on a playoff team.

Albert's value
is clearly displayed in the crappiness of his division.

Most Valuable Player on a Mediocre Team in a Crappy-division

It's the MVP-MTC award!

It's funny that the clearly more talented player says he should have won it, not becaue he's more talented ('cause clearly that has dick to do with it) but because his team made the playoffs ... I guess he's qualified to be a sports writer ...
