Around SBN: Rondo On Slowing Heat: 'They've Got To Hit The Deck, Too'

Open Playoff Thread: ALCS Game 3 - A's at Detroit

The A's and King Richard who went 4-0 with a 4.24 ERA in 2006 take on the Tigers and Kenny Rogers who went 17-8 with a 3.84 ERA.

Remember that the A's won all nine starts that Rich Harden started this year and it should make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, especially when game time temperatures could creep down into the 40s.  Something that will bring the chill back very quickly is the fact that Rogers has owned the A's for years.

The A's lineup looks like this:

Kendall
Kotsay
Bradley
Thomas
Payton
Chavez
Swisher
Scutaro
Jimenez

I'll repeat this once more, I honestly believe that Kielty needs to be in there against a lefty.  I respect that Kotsay is a veteran and had an amazing game (hell, I'm wearing his player tee right now as is my daughter), but we NEED this game.  You lose this one and we probably won't see our boys in Oakland again until April.

The Tigers send out this lineup:

Granderson
Monroe
Polanco
Ordonez
Guillen
Rodriguez
Infante
Inge
Santiago

The Tigers have hit Harden well in the past...to the tune of a .364 average and a team .985 OPS.  Hopefully the cold will help with that. I'm pretty sure that people won't exactly want to make good contact with a 96 mph heater.

If Harden has his good splitter and change up working today, he should be fine.  If not, the Tigers lineup should be able to hit the fastball.

LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

but it won't matter...A's will win anyway, my guess 8-3 (that's not a jinx)

as one of the more virulent Kotsayphobes ...
... I have to point out that Kotsay and Kielty have virtually identical lifetime numbers vs Rogers; and in the absence of a strong platoon differential for either Rogers or Kotsay (though the pitchers Kotsay kills do tend to be righties and the ones who shut him down do tend to be lefties), I'm officially backing off of my "Kielty must start vs Rogers" jeremiad. With no strong offensive argument, Kotsay's defense (and the potential challenges both of the more spacious Detroit yard and of playind D in the Lake Effect chill) does make for a compelling argument to start him today.

I do still insist that Kielty should have started G1, though. Macha and Beane blew that one.

Scutaro is over-(.200)-rated
Hurt is back to his April-May abilities
Swisher can't handle the off-speed
Chavez can't handle the pitches around the eyes ... or normally routine-for-him groundballs
Harden's stuff is unknown, but he will throw fastballs, and Tigers like fastballs
We have Jimenez in Ellis's spot
Our bats are going to virtual freezing, to an environment where rain has frozen

Might as well blow this team up.  If there was a way to bet $50 on the Tigers to win the series, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Kielty
Left field defense is of little importance. It's rare that a key play is made there. None were in Games 1 or 2. Certainly, it could crop up at a key moment. But if the difference between hitters is in any way significant, you should always play the better hitter.

In Game 1 it was an unforgivable and gutless move.

In this game--similar to the Santana game--it makes a little more sense (anticipated pitching duel).

In all situations vs. a lefty, though, I would start Kielty. Absolutely no exceptions.

Leyland
I just feel that if the A's can win today and climb back into this, they have a good shot because of the idiosyncratic managing of Leyland.

The horrible bench they brought to the post-season (no Shelton). That leading to Perez/Infante for Casey. It's unbelievable to replace a premium offensive position with a light-hitting infielder. It's criminal really--and he should pay. The overuse of the bullpen.

We just need to get one and this series in there for the taking.

He had absolutely no chance of reaching back and touching the bag.  Radio guys say it was blatant, and watching the replay at the same time (delayed on my tv, have to switch back and forth, this sucks) - they were exactly right.  It was completely blatant - and bullshit.  TV guys show the replay - say absolutely nothing - complete silence.

Anyone else tired of this shit - Take it to them, time to be the aggressor.  Screw the cold, screw the tigers, get on base, steal second.  Run hard.  Balls out, all out.  BS.  Take out their fielders even harder!

racist joke
I'm glad someone else caught that. Is there any other explanation for what he said? Did I misunderstand the joke? Or is this guy about to lose his job?

I don't know...
he just said something like.."lou, showing off that espa?ol...do I have my wallet? I should check..

To be honest, a quick top of the 2nd
may not have been the worst thing.  Harden didn't have time to cool down to much.  Now he can put them down in order and we can come up in the 3rd with the top of the order.

i'm following the game on gamecast.

by freeky frooky on Oct 13, 2006 2:06 PM PDT reply actions

It looked like there was a little pine tar
on the brim of Kenny's cap.  Could just be dirt, I guess.

Not that Macha would ever do it, but if you can confirm this visually, why not take a run at getting Kenny tossed?

Rogers' pitch count is meaningless

rather he was out there than Rodney and Zumaya, at least there is a chance in hell of doing something against Rogers.  Against the bullpen, forget it.

Lou said
"expecting Scutaro to perform the way he did in the division series is like finding a wallet on Saturday and then looking a again on Sunday and Monday, and Lyons was refering to that.

by mikeA on Oct 13, 2006 2:06 PM PDT reply actions

yeah I think the joke had something to do with
lou talking about how the A's scored a lot in the ALDS and it was like finding a wallet on friday night and then expecting to find a wallet on sat and sun night. I assumed it had something to do with that

by Amnesiac727 on Oct 13, 2006 2:06 PM PDT reply actions

I wouldn't want to sit next to Lou either,
but not cause he speaks spanish.  Did he actually say that????

by Green N Gold NV on Oct 13, 2006 2:06 PM PDT reply actions

the joke
paraphrasing:
Pinella said, the A's better get en fuego en el frio.
Lyons: Lou's hablain' espanol, and I can't find my wallet. I think I'm gonna move away from Lou.

something like that.

Lyons got fired
In the final analysis (actual dialogue was not clear originally from the bit by bit soundbyte posts here), it was clear what he said and it was clearly wrong. Lyons was an idiot and deserved what he got. Good riddance to him.

What a morale killer....
Rich threw four pitches in the dirt to start things off, Polanco got a hit+RBI, and Chavvy hit the ball as hard as he could and couldn't even get it to the wall.
This really looks like the A's were just going along playing regular baseball and then they met the Tigers and were overwhelmed. These Detroitans are playing at a much higher level than the A's could ever achieve. The Angels were playing like this at the end of the season. I still don't know how the A's got here.
