The Rangers are after Roger Clemens. Clemens possibly to the Rangers? YIKES.

Okay, time to get a little bit of work done but here's a nice way to start off the morning!

I haven't seen Chavy in high socks in ages...

I'm looking forward to Saturday, too, but it always seems to me like the rest of the offseason draaaaaaaaaaaaaags after FanFest...

Jenkins article
Bruce Jenkins is quite the prognosticator. After predicting that the Giants will win the west, he goes on to tell us why old guys and hurt pitchers are the best things ever:
Veteran leadership abounds with catcher Mike Matheny, shortstop Omar Vizquel, right fielder Moises Alou, second baseman Ray Durham and especially Morris, far better equipped than Jason Schmidt to be the spiritual, butt-kicking czar of the starting rotation. Schmidt always seems to have something wrong with him; Morris tends to pitch through untold discomfort without telling anyone. Together, with the youthful Noah Lowry and Matt Cain, they are superior to any other group in this division.

by eebie on Jan 24, 2006 10:50 AM PST reply actions

They've got a decent enough staff ...
they were second best in the West last year and they've improved, so they're a decent bet to be the best unit in the division. The question is if they can score any runs. They scored the second fewest runs in the league last year and were second worst in OPS+. As has been the case for this entire century, the Giants success is entirely dependent on Barry Bonds.

ya it looks great
the thing im most interested in is the new swing control method.  You use the analog stick to start your swing and follow through just like Tiger woods golf.  This could be the greatest feature added to any baseball game.  I imagine that you can go to opposite field on an outside pitch and also hold up your swing much easier than before.  It also has a dynasty mode which is the best part of the college football games.

The only downside of the game?  Its only on XBOX and PS2.  Oh and I think I read you cant bean players in it.  Something to do with sportsmanship.  Bah!

Sharon Robinson: honor Clemente some other way

The daughter of Jackie Robinson thinks Major League Baseball should not retire Roberto Clemente's No. 21, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

I don't feel that they should retire the number 21.  Roberto was a great player, but he didn't transcend anything.  Although he was doing humanitarian work when he died.

with the lone exception of Jackie Robinson of course.

When do you stop? There's a limited supply of numbers out there. I find it funny how teams like the Cowboys seem to retire everyone's jersey #.

Do like the Raiders, they don't retire #'s because they want their young players to proudly aspire to be like the greats of the past.

By the way, the European press has a different noun/verb agreement when it comes to team names. Every team is considered a plural "they," never a singular "it." For example, here a story would say:

Oakland is five games up on Anaheim.

or

The Athletics are five games up on Anaheim.

In Europe, they would say:

Oakland are five games up on Anaheim.

That is, if they knew who Oakland and Anaheim are. Is. Were. Huh?

I actually prefer using the plural when discussing American baseball teams, since all the teams names are already in the plural. Though it does sound sort of weird when you read "Barcelona ARE in first place", i.e. when the team name is in the singular.

Report: Coco deal on hold; Mota Flunks Physical
Rotoworld's reporting that Guillermo Mota flunked his physical and now the Coco Crisp deal is on hold:
WIP radio in Philadelphia is reporting that the Coco Crisp trade is being held up because Red Sox reliever Guillermo Mota failed his physical.

Roto Analysis/Implications/Possibilities:

Concerns about Mota's elbow or shoulder are apparently providing a stumbling block, but they may not kill the deal. There's been talk of Red Sox reliever Manny Delcarmen being involved, with him maybe replacing Mota in the deal. It's also possible that David Riske could be taken out of the trade. If the Indians can get Andy Marte, they shouldn't let the relievers stand in the way. It's just too good of a trade for them. The Phillies would also come away disappointed if the Crisp deal doesn't go down, as they won't be getting Arthur Rhodes in return for Jason Michaels.

meet the new boss
same as the old boss

MLB on XM was playing that clip from The Who's "Won't get Fooled Again" a lot tonight.

Anyone else listen to 175 on XM? Other than AN, it's how I keep from going nuts in the winter without baseball.

Question
what would be a good time to get those tickets that let you take pictures with the players?
