Link Dump 1/19: We are one day from tomorrow

Bronson Arroyo is close to finalizing a three-year contract with the Red Sox, according to the Boston Globe.  The total value of the contract will be something like 12 MM, which is a bargain considering his career ERA+ (100, exactly average), age, and apparent durability.  Heck, that contract would be a bargain for an above-average reliever.

What's the downside for Arroyo?

...being signed at a fixed cost for a duration of some length ... also would appear to make Arroyo more vulnerable to being dealt to a team such as Tampa Bay, which is seeking affordable starting pitching and has a player the Sox covet in shortstop/leadoff hitter Julio Lugo.

I, for one, would find this sort of loyalty refreshing but for two facts:

  1. Why is this happening with Red Sox, who can actually afford to pay market price for pitching?
  2. Major league clubs are about as loyal as that one guy you know who is totally not loyal.
This contract is not as bizarre as Tim Wakefield's reserve-clause contract.  But the Red Sox sure do get an awful lot of production from their low-monetary value contracts - David Ortiz, Arroyo, Trot Nixon, Wakefield - while Keith Foulke and The Man With the Bloody Sock get a boatload of cash for stinking it up.

The Toronto Star takes a look at the Jays' increased payroll.  Verdict: they're pretty much at their limit and should probably forego Bengie Molina.

Speaking of Molina, it appears he - or his agent - overplayed his hand when he declined the admittedly lowball offer (6 yrs/18MM) the Mets gave him.  The Dodgers may offer him a one-year deal, which would make no sense given their current catcher situation.  The Yankees reportedly had interest in signing Molina, but now they deny, deny, deny.  Flirts.

The Braves have no closer.  They've struck out on Kyle Farnsworth, Trevor Hoffman, Bob Wickman, Todd Jones, and now Danys Baez.  I understand that they also can't get a date to the NL East formal this spring.  If Mazzone were still around, they would probably resurrect Billy Koch or, hell, Dan Quisenberry to post a sub-2.00 ERA and 55 saves.  Now...we'll see.

Thats great man.  What a fun game, but you never had enough time in your designated "computer" period in school to finish a game.  Everyone always spent most of the time hunting, shooting like 5 buffalos, a couple deer, only to take back like 50lbs of the 800 you killed.  Oh and props to anyone who could actually hit the squirrel.

BP looks at the A's
A few highlights:

"There's not a team in baseball with as much starting-pitching depth as the A's have. "

"When you consider the depth of the bench and bullpen, the A's may have the strongest 16-25 roster in the game. That matters over 162 games."

"After a couple of disappointing seasons, each of which ended with the A's watching the Angels celebrate a division title on their home field, they look loaded for bear in 2006, and will likely enter the season as the favorite in the AL West. "

I'll probably make a ton more sweeping incorrect generalizations in the future to get responses. The amount my diary has gotten so far is far more than all the others in the top 25, and is more than most of them combined. So, whether you agree or not, let's try and bring back minorleagueball.com to the essentials, eh? Sal, you're a very intelligent guy. Please, weigh in -- it only breeds good natured debate

Both are excellent prospects ...
I think Young has a better chance of being a superstar - I think Barton has less of a chance of being forever remembered for his unfulfilled potential. Young is a better athlete, though and brings defensive value to the table along with his awesome bat, so I'd definitely go with him.

sucks
I wonder what moves Boston will make now.  Still need a CF, could move Wells, Manny etc.  I was hoping the red sox would make those moves WITHOUT epstein.

well, that.
Acquired RHP Josh Beckett, 3B Mike Lowell and RHP Guillermo Mota from the Marlins in exchange for SS Hanley Ramirez, RHP Anibal Sanchez, RHP Jesus Delgado and RHP Harvey Garcia. << awful, and don't they also have likely-hurt Braves prospect Andy Marte?

Maybe Theo's the new CF...
I can't remember what I was going to say, but I assure you, it was brilliant!

Theo is officially a tool.
I had a lot of respect for the guy for going like he  did, but this? Lame, dude. That's your dignity being run over.

Many thanks.
Maybe now I can stop compulsively writing "there, their, they're" in my notebook. <insert clever emoticon here>

It's either a flashback ...
... or a literary device. I'm never sure which.

Kendall the table-setter
For those hoping that Kendall will bat 9th this year ...

"Jason is a table-setter," said Macha. "He's a top-of-the-order guy, not a power guy. But he's certainly capable of getting his fair share of doubles, and he'll drive some runs in. When it's all said and done this year, I expect him to have the kind of numbers we saw when he was in Pittsburgh.
