Harden Status:
Is he officially done?  I haven't heard anything from the A's to suggest that.

And when I say officially, I mean it.  I think he's done for the season, but that doesn't mean that Harden is "done for the season" (officially).

If we put in Cruz now,

Thank goodness Macha and BB came to their senses and are not starting the Cruz to Looze manana vs the Twins. The game he blew on Saturday would have come on Monday had he started...

by reztips on Sep 18, 2005 12:54 PM PDT reply actions

That's completely unfair.
Oh, wait.

Nevermind.

Cruz is a STARTER. You can't predict what he would do starting a game, since you've never seen it. His chance to start should have come before now, and management can't afford to see how it goes now.

Cruz hasn't been a starter in the Bigs since
he pitched for the Cubs. And they took him out of that role because he couldn't cut in, not lost upon the Braves who used him as a reliever. But then again, bbgirl, perhaps you are one of those who believe minor league stats truly translate to MLB performances...

by baseballgirl on Sep 18, 2005 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

a manager has to think about tomorrow
 especially in the regular season.

that's one of the big challenges of managing: playing to win today'sgame yet not compromising your team's ability to win tomorrow's game.

by OaklandSi on Sep 18, 2005 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I totally agree, OaklandSi,
and have usually argued for long-term thinking against "win today at all costs" thinking. But the art of managing is calculating when it's the right time to do what. Personally, I think Macha miscalculated on Friday, but that's just my opinion. In any event, at worst he didn't cost the A's a win; at most he cost the A's one more inning to bat and try to score.

Return of Crosby...

by pwr12 on Sep 18, 2005 12:57 PM PDT reply actions

I like that idea
With Crosby behind him, Chavy might not press himself as hard to get guys in. I'm not sure Crosby's yet earned the right to the third spot - I would like to see him hitting fifth, or a lineup somewhat like this:

Ellis, 2B
Kendall, C
Kotsay, CF
Chavez,3B
Crosby, SS
Johnson, 1B

I'm a tiny bit sad
that Saarloos managed to have his ERA go up despite a studly job. I love Saarloos. And today we just may have A HELL OF A LOT OF 10-WIN STARTERS!! WOO!

I give rookieoftheyear credit for this game.

I love and loathe this offense so very, very much... damn, that 12-spot looks pretty on the TV.

He had a 4.05 ERA today, and I think 3.89 coming in.

Yeah, but I was excited
early in the game when it was getting down around 3.79. Just because I think it would be extraordinary if we managed to have our fifth starter with an ERA around 3.60 or 3.55 at the end of the season. His extraordinary skills as a fifth starter make me swoon. :-)

Anybody remember who we got for Harville???......A 24 year old one time top prospect who at the time had a ERA in the minors of somewhere over 6 and had lost all the confidence of the Houston Astros....Billy is the Man who would have thought that Kirk would be such a steal!!! He's become a great 5 starter, and Chad has just been bouncing around from team to team

2 of 3 in Texas, 1 of 3 in Cleveland, 2 of 4 in Boston. Of course, we'll always agonize over which games we SHOULD have won, but didn't, and in the end, that isn't too bad. After all, the Bosox blew us away in exactly ZERO games. We were right there with them the whole time...and in one case, it was just a bad time to choose to hit Manny, who would otherwise deserve it.
