Starting the ball rolling...

Questions and answers on the farm.

Excerpt:

Who was the biggest surprise in the A's farm system this season?

I'd call it a dead heat between Andre Ethier and Kevin Melillo . Those who make a living in player development all say that the transition to Double-A is the most telling for a prospect's chances at making an impact at the big league level.

Ethier began the year at Midland and hit the ground running. He cooled off a bit towards the end of the summer, but his final line is still impressive: .319/.385/.497, 30 doubles, three triples, 18 homers, 80 RBI and 48 walks. He played four games in Sacramento and will start 2006 there, with a shot at the big leagues if he impresses at AAA.

Melillo took a longer route to Midland, but, in some ways, he was even more impressive than Ethier. ... Nine homers in 90 ABs? That's just sick. The A's thought so too and sent Melillo on to Midland, where he has hit .282/.347/.519, with ten doubles and seven more homeruns in 35 games. His walk rate has dropped a bit, but his power has increased. His hinder has really rounded out in an attractive way as well. What this means for Melillo and for the A's organization is that, suddenly, a second baseman who began the year as a 22 year-old playing in Low Class-A is now a 23 year-old excelling in Double-A.

Also a very interesting answer to the question Which prospect has a higher ceiling: Andre Ethier or Danny Putnam ? including the para

It is important to note that Ethier has had back issues since his days at Arizona State and missed the last month of 2004 when micro-fractures were discovered in his vertebrae. He spent the off-season working with a back specialist to strengthen the muscle groups in his stomach and back in an effort to avoid similar problems in the future. Call it coincidence if you like, but he went from being a physically large player with disappointing power to a legitimate power threat the very next season. His rear has also increased greatly in attractiveness.

I have no idea how that got in there. It's okay, I'm pretty sure no other glitches got in there.

Devil Rays already screwing up future
Despite baseball's best efforts to give them top prospects, the Devil Rays are already bungling in the PR dept:

http://rays.tbo.com/rays/MGB92YCNJDE.html

TAMPA For the record, Delmon Young said he is "not disappointed" and "not hurt" by the Devil Rays' decision not to call him up to the majors this season. But ask Baseball America's 2005 Minor League Player of the Year his thoughts on the decision, and the 19-year-old Young sounds as if he wouldn't mind never playing a game for the Rays.

"They could at least give me the common courtesy of a call to tell me why they couldn't call me up or explain it to someone," Young said in a call with reporters Monday. "As soon as I get my time up there, as soon as I become a free-agent, I'll just bounce out of there. There's no reason to try and stay around there for the long haul. Get your six years and leave."

warm fuzzies
That's what I got when I read this comment about Haren.
"He's a big-game pitcher," third baseman Eric Chavez said. "You can tell he wants to be out there. He's got the stuff to go out and shut down a good team like that."

Why did it give me the warm fuzzies? Well, because it's neat to see Chavez have so much confidence in one of the young pitchers. He's made similar statements about Saarloos, and he's raved about the bullpen. Losing Hudson and Mulder made him nervous, but it's good to know that all that is history.

I love this team.

I could do without the strikeouts, though.

I won't be able to watch Sizemore play

It's a credit to Kotsay, though, b/c Sizemore is a damn good-looking ballplayer. In more ways than one.

Coin flips
A's got screwed.  In the event of a tie with the Angels, Indians, or Yankees we would be on the road for every one of those for a one game playoff.  Most travelled team just can't catch a break.

Warning: admires a player on a different team
I must say, I really like Dontrelle Willis.  Yesterday he won his 21st game of the season, pitching a complete game, and hitting a 2-run homer. His stats are terrific and the guy's got serious heart.  Here's the article about his win yesterday on the Marlins site:

Good article, plus Willis is from Oakland
Any other year he'd get the C.Y. award.  I'm also a Willis fan.  He seems like a classy guy too.

What ya talkin' 'bout Willis
Willis can friggin mash. He crushed that ball. SportsCenter said it went 420feet, but it looked farther.

Willis
He just looks like someone who will play in Oakland. Someday, somehow....
I don't know what i'm writing about.

by ohad on Sep 13, 2005 11:20 AM PDT   0 recs

Yeah, after a bad season
with a 4.50 ERA and an elbow injury, Beane will see his strong K/9 and trade a couple of scrubs to make Willis our closer.  After he hits 40 saves in the first season, we deal him and his declining control to the Devil Rays for a coming-into-his-prime Delmon Young.

Not A's news, but...
Mariner Dan Wilson retires. He was one of the good guys in the game, I gotta tip my hat to him. Very cool that they're gonna try to get him healthy enough for one last inning behind a plate, that'll be a nice thing for the fans.

Also, I mentioned this in another thread, but the Tribune mentioned the coin flips that have been posted a few times here. The A's have poor luck, man.
The A's lost all three coin flips Monday for home-field advantage in the event of a tie, and have lost nine straight over the past three years, which made Macha wonder what are the odds. The answer is the odds are 1 to 512 to that occurring.

So manybe the A's losing in the postseason is purely a trend and Beane's fault, not bad luck... but DUDE. The coin flips tell us that there is a strange curse taking hold in Oakland. If you can lose nine straight coin flips, you can lose nine straight clinching games. I believe.
