Photos, photos, photos

Oh, lots and lots of photos from the Angels series and the Twins series. Oddly heavy on the Blanton. I guess I was trying to make up for that joke I made at his expense last week...

There are more photos than usual, so you might have to be more patient than usual.

I LOVE EM! I LOVE EM!

You're my new hero!

You've probably been asked this before but what camera do you use?

by anA on Aug 14, 2005 9:29 PM PDT reply actions

Awww
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed 'em. I use a Kodak DX6490. It has a 10x optical zoom and four megapixels which I think is the important thing.

AWESOME
Do you go to like every game? Just amazing photos. It was great meeting you before the game, sorry we didn't get to talk more. I'm going again Monday, and if you are too, we can meet up. I love the Macha one... he just has that pissed off/annoyed face in the 2nd shot. I like the one with Rickey waving at you, too bad some jerk got their hand in that shot, blocking Hendu. I'm also glad to know that Yabu is doing fine and dandy outside of Blanton's tummy. Great shots and I can't wait to see your next ones!

Sadly,
not every game. For instance, I won't be at tomorrow's game. So we'll have to meet up again some other time. Perhaps Wednesday or next weekend? And yes, how dare that guy have a hand! I wanted to hack it off right there. I probably wouldn't have been able to stay for the rest of the game, though. And thanks for the nice words, but you know I just strive to equal the high standards you have set for photos here on AN!

by Nimvee on Aug 14, 2005 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Hm
I don't TRY to set high standards, I just have a lot of practice, as technically I guess I'm a "professional" photographer. I wanted to go Wednesday soooo bad, but I have a newspaper meeting that day... and well... me being an editor, can't quite skip on that. Sadly, after tomorrow, the next game I'm attending will be the Yankees series, on the 4th and possibly the 3rd. We'll definetly meet up again before the season. It was just so freaking crowded that day (which I guess is a good thing), and I had AN day going on, so I couldn't stay long down there. We have similar cameras too, but yours is probably a lot better. Mine is an Olympus C-765 Ultra Zoom with 10x optical zoom and 4.0 megapixels, but I just got it because it was cheap and had such a great zoom.

WOW
These are amazing photos! Just curious, where were you seated (or were you moving around before the game started)? what kind of camera do you use?

I was up in 320. I haven't brought my camera yet (Olympus 750UZ) to any games, but may give it a shot sometime.

by OaklandSi on Aug 14, 2005 9:33 PM PDT reply actions

I'll have to meet up with you too
I'll be in the bleachers, but I'll be down around field level to take pictures of the players. Depending on whether or not I have a flag, I'll have my Oakland LF Bleachers shirt (yes flag), or my Zito shirt (no flag).

Thanks!
I usually move around before the game but in the general area of the bullpen as that's where most of the players hang out. As for during the game, I'm usually in the first few rows of 128 or 129. Great for pictures, not so much for hiding from the sun.

I have a Kodak DX6490 which has pretty much the same specs as your Olympus so the more photographers the merrier!

by Nimvee on Aug 14, 2005 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

unfortunately I may not
be able to get to the ballpark early enough to roam around, when it appears to be the best time to get some of those photos. But I'll try to experiment a bit with the camera up in the nosebleed section.

If the crowd is not too big (and the security folks not so ferocious about us third deckers moving down later in the game) I'll look for you.

Photo posting question.
It's my first time posting photos on AN, so I made a photobucket account, uploaded my photos there, and tried a test post on my last diary. The photo came out humongous. How do I get it down to a reasonable size?
Picker of Nits since '63. Or so I thought until I discovered AN. Now I feel like a nitpiker.

by McFood on Aug 14, 2005 10:51 PM PDT reply actions

Use
something like Photoshop, or some sort of photo editing program, and you can crop and resize photos to a reasonable size

by JLaff on Aug 14, 2005 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I will often edit my photos
(in photoshop) by clicking on File->edit in Image Ready. It's really easy to adjust the image size there. Every photo I've posted to the web (not for AN, for my work) has come out decently and not too enormous, once I started to do this.

by OaklandSi on Aug 14, 2005 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Or
Photobucket also has a resizing ability. Above each photo in an album there are three buttons and if you click "Edit" a new page will open. On that page you can resize the picture to 75%, 50% or 25% of the original size.

by Nimvee on Aug 14, 2005 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks Nimvee
I'm trying that but some of the photos are not cooperating!

Awesome!!
Nice meeting you yesterday, if only for like a minute or two :)

Your pictures are always great because not only are they nice photos, you have so many different ones that it really brings the on-field interaction to life. Witasick is just a cooooool guy - did you ever pick him back up on your fantasy team?

And see, these pictures are further proof that Street is camera shy. You have great closeups of everyone, but those four of Street? He's either just in profile, trying to duck away, moving around and making the picture blurry, or covering his face with his arm. [By those standards though, Witasick is totally mugging for the camera.]

Zito... what a lady-killer.

by Melody on Aug 15, 2005 1:10 AM PDT reply actions

He never seems shy for my camera
Mine has a weird personality. It loves Zito, Street and Haren... Chavez, not so much.

I'm glad you mentioned Chavy.
Does he go to the clubhouse after he stretches and takes BP?

I noticed people like Hatte, Crosby, Johnson, Swish, Ellis, etc. practice fielding, but Chavy disappears. Do I just miss him?

by Jennifer on Aug 15, 2005 7:30 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't see him often before the game...
I just mean when I have my mom's work's seats which are right by 1st base, and I'm able to take close-ups of hitting. Chavvy always turns up blurry while guys like Zito, Street, Swish, Haren... always clear.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

This is from an A's/White Sox game last year. Proving that, yes, Chavvy DOES come out to warm up, I think.

Thanks.
In KC I would notice him stretch, take BP, and then I wouldn't see him again until he came out for the Anthem. It was weird.

by Jennifer on Aug 15, 2005 7:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Security?!
Bitches!

I guess they also had Harden locked up. I noticed Rich and Chav about five times the entire weekend (when Chav wasn't on the field).

I didn't get to see Rich because I was too scared to walk down the LF line to where the pitchers were until Sunday. And I only walked down there on Sunday because it was Autograph Day at the K and the exiting lines for John Buck and Jeremy Affeldt went right by my seat. I was not getting up 8795 times.

Then it was so hot sitting out in the sun I started seeing Care Bears in CF. I said screw getting pictures of :P and Harden, I'm heading to the shade.

by Apricot on Aug 15, 2005 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Indeed!
We will have to run into each other again in our pursuits to get clear, crisp pictures of Huston. It's odd, my camera usually only likes pitchers, but Street is somehow managing to outsmart the camera. Maybe it's a closer thing; the Eck pictures didn't turn out great and Trevor Hoffman tends to come out blurry, too. Hmm.

I still haven't picked Witasick up yet. I should. Yesterday he apologized for only striking out two guys on Saturday (although he claimed, "I struck out the other guy, he just didn't know it".) With my team we're talking about four closers play for KC, Tampa Bay, Detroit and St. Louis. Either they never win or the beat the crap out of opponents.

And the first time I noticed that Zito signs right handed. So he's not a true lefty?

Ambidextrous I believe
He plays guitar, writes, and does pretty much everything but pitch with his right hand. Coordination trivia: Phillies LHP closer Billy Wagner... born a righty.

by JLaff on Aug 15, 2005 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Nope...
He also holds his spoon with his right hand too, this came up in a question about eating cereal. I believe Joe Kennedy is naturally right handed as well. During one of his first A's appearances, the announcers of the opposing team [not sure which one exactly, but I think this was during the White Sox extra innings game] talked about how his father was told that if he wanted Joe to make it to the majors as a pitcher, he "better become left-handed." But I'm not sure if he's really "left-handed" now or if he does a similar thing, where he only pitches with his left hand and still does everything else with his right.

by Melody on Aug 15, 2005 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions

He does everything right handed
except pitch (and bat). Somewhat unusual. I'm not sure that counts as truly ambidextrous. it's also possible that he was encouraged to write with his right hand very early in life. That often happens to lefties.

I'm lefthanded but can write with either hand. But I don't think I'm truly ambidextrous since I was forced to write right handed only when I started school (hopefully they don't do that anymore), and only started writing left handed on my own when I was a little older.
