Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

Open Thread: Game 95 - A's at Texas (cont.)

A's down 3-0 and Smokin' Joe is down to a simmer right now.

It sickens me to continue to look at Rogers on the mound and how it mocks the game we all love.  Shame on you, Selig, and the Rangers for asking for a player to replace Rogers on the roster during the suspension.

LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!  HIT THAT THUG!!!

Rogers is indeed frustrating
He doesn't look like he's throwing anything hard to hit, but nothing gets hit very hard.
A Beane in the hand is worth $60M in payroll

The Problem is Rogers not Blanton
If the A's don't figure out how to hit Rogers than whatever Blanton does is irrelevant.

Not yet...
I think the A's offense has a rude suprise in store for the Roaster...

I echo the same sentiments, Blez
The MLB appeal process is ridiculous.  I love the way David Stern and Stu Jackson handle the disciplinary (spell check, please?? process in the NBA.
GO A's!!!

by AsGirl on Jul 21, 2005 6:04 PM PDT reply actions

I agree
The MLB needs to take a cue from the NBA and how they react with suspensions. Guys actually have to serve them instead of playing for a month and THEN sitting out...and they sure as heck don't make it to the All-Star Game!

by nycfan @ Athletics Nation on Jul 21, 2005 6:06 PM PDT up reply actions

It is ridiculous
but you can't place all the game on the commissioner. A lot of it is determined by the collective bargaining agreement, and baseball players have the strongest union in pro sports. What pissed me off in this case, though, was that the Rangers were able to push Rogers' first start after the break back, apparently knowing that the appeal wouldn't happen until tomorrow, and allowing Rogers to face the A's twice.

I'm with the contingent
saying nurse Blanton as long as you can. Win or lose, this year is about player development too, and win or lose tonight we have the favorable matchup (IMO) all 3 games the rest of the series. You can play for today, tomorrow, and next in one fell swoop, and that's what we ought to do today, I think.

Agreed...
All in all, it's still three runs he's allowed, not 10. So while the A's are still in breathing distance, you might as well try to let Blanton get his pitches in and try to hold the fort as best he can and learn from today, whether the A's come back or not.

Too much short-term memory
I agree with you. He had a great June and was good early in the season when the offense was terrible. It's not like he can't be successful.

Even Harden had his terrible starts.

by nycfan @ Athletics Nation on Jul 21, 2005 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree completely.
There are lessons that can be learned from a loss for a young pitcher.  This is a game he and Kendall can sit and review and say we should have tried this, shouldn't have done that etc.  Pulling the kid 2 innings in is going to do more to ruin is confidence than leaving him and letting him get on track.

Suspension system needs to be different for
starting pitchers. It should be based on a number of starts, not games. Basically after four starters have pitched, one game would be assessed, then repeat the process for however long it needs to be.
Everyone should want Larry Davis as their boss...there would never be a timetable on anything.

by Unuscione on Jul 21, 2005 6:08 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, its a crime
that somehow Rogers suspension will be reduced from 20 games.  He'll only miss three starts!

(Although that might be enough to sink the Rangers)

Freakin' Rogers
What is it about him the A's can't figure out?

by BruceBochte on Jul 21, 2005 6:09 PM PDT reply actions

Blanton
As I said on the other thread, I think it's important that Blanton last five innings because it's the first of four in Arlington and we can't trash the bullpen.

SanTropez is right.  We can let Yabu and Kennedy finish the game if the A's fall far behind.

Everyone should remember that Blanton is a rookie, subject to typical rookie struggles.  He's not always going to be as good as he was in June.  Besides, he wasn't been that terrible.  One run was Kielty's fault.

Blanton may settle down and last five or six decent innings, and that would be a respectable achievement against a tough Rangers lineup in that silly Arlington stadium.  The A's may not win the game, but sometimes it really is about the process.

by bear88 on Jul 21, 2005 6:09 PM PDT reply actions

Let Yabu pitch if it gets to that,
but don't waste more than one pitcher out of the pen tonight.  We have three more games this weekend and we need to keep the pen as fresh as possible.  Let Joe go for 6+ and let Yabu finish if we're out of it.  If we're in it, play to win.

by gatling on Jul 21, 2005 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

pitch count
At least if Rogers gets his pitch count up, we don't have to be afraid of the Ranger bullpen. Playing against Anaheim makes it tough because you've got to get their starters.

Chavez should have been given the night off
Not sure why he is DH tonight. He has looked rather feeble lately. Why not give a complete rest and DH Hatteberg, Dan Johnson or Melhuse. Any of those guys could do better than Chavy is looking tonight. Just my opinion. It is like Macha can't think outside the box when Chavy is in the lineup.
Any comments?

by Vegas Ace on Jul 21, 2005 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with you
There's no reason to DH Chavez.  He's not hitting anyway.  He can play the other games.  If his shoulder is bothering him, the rest would do him good.

want to overextend Melhuse since he will actually get a start sometime during this series.  Two consecutive games with Melhuse in the lineup is just plain lunacy!

Okay.
Since Selig and the Rangers have proven themselves utterly incompetant when it comes to dealing with discipline problems, as evidenced by the chair and the cameraman, from now on any Texas player facing suspension will have their suspension determined by a poll on ESPN.com, with no possibility of appeal.

The idea of getting to replace that idiot, of even THINKING of requesting it, is disrespectful to the game and proves the Rangers suck.

Also, given the large numbers of discipline problems and violence that has been demonstrated by the Texas Rangers in terms of fighting with other teams and people outside the game, every player will have his own personal security guard hired by a third party group.

Ellis singled.
Swisher slid home, looks like he may have been out but we got the call.

Then Kendall hit one back to Rogers, who had Ellis caught in a rundown -- Ellis just stood there as Kenny approached, then took off to third and Kenny slipped and fell before tossing to third, so Kendall got to second. FUNNY stuff.

Woo! Ellis!
Way to hit, dude!

....Wow. How the heck did we get that call at the plate? Um. Thank you, ump? Maybe the ump's mad about Kenny, too!

ellis vs. rogers
I seem to recall Ellis was the only one in our lineup who could hit Rogers the first time we faced him this year. Anyone know his overall numbers against him?

I heard from Peter Gammons chat forum on espn
that Billy Beane had discussions about trading for Mike Piazza.  Gammons said it was unlikely as the A's would only be interested if the Mets paid his entire salary and the A's would only trade for Piazza to give up some of their prospects.  Have you guys heard anything?

by Testy1212 on Jul 21, 2005 6:36 PM PDT reply actions

PIAZZA?
Why? What good could come of that?

Yeah...
but it just seems weird. Would he be a permanent DH, I'm guessing? I'm no expert, but I think we're set at catcher.

Part-time DH I would assume.
If the Mets picked up the tab, it would be worth a shot.  Couldn't be any worse than running Ginter out there once or twice a week.

Don't like that...
According to one scout, Piazza has "slider bat speed."  Can't get around on a good fastball anymore.

by BruceBochte on Jul 21, 2005 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

If that means ...
... that he'd smash Fox's "Slider" character into oblivion, it'd be worth it.

Otherwise, yeah, thanks, not interested.

Damn slow-ass Mench got that ball. He's such a
liability out there.  We got to get this game.  It would be such a bonus.  Especially with Randy Johnson going against the Angels tonight.

Can I just say:
Whichever intern is doing the camerawork for Fox Sports Net today, I'll hold him down if Kenny Rogers wants to slug him. Brutal.

Another "heads up" play by Ellie, almost got us the tying run.

Hmmm...whenever Rogers does get suspended...
...maybe he can give Steve Williams a break and caddy for Tiger Woods...

Blanton's already thrown 85 pitches
If he gets in any trouble, Macha better have someone ready to bail him out.  He's not long for this game anyway.  And now it's a game.

Rogers at 83 pitches
Need a shut down inning here from Joe B.  Hopefully we'll get into that juicy Texass bull pen by the 7th inning.

Take Blanton out now. I really don't like him in
there now.  He's struggled evevry inning today and our bullpen is rested.  Come on Macha be pre-emptive today.

If it were me,
I'd say "good job" and call it a night for Blanton after 5 (92 pitches, 95 degrees). That's my official call.
