All-Star Game Open Thread

I figured people might want to talk about the All-Star game here.  Although it doesn't hold that much allure if you're an A's fan.  I just heard on the radio through Marty Lurie that Duchscherer was told he was a "deep reserve" by AL Manager Terry Francona.  So I don't suspect we'll see Duke in the game unless it goes extra innings or something.  But that's actually fine by me.  The less wear and tear on one of our key bullpen guys the better.

The AL lineup looks like this:

Damon
Rodriguez
Ortiz
Ramirez
Tejada
Guerrero
Teixeira
Varitek
Roberts

I wonder if A-Rod will punch Varitek if Varitek strikes out?

The NL lineup looks like this:

Abreu
Beltran
Pujols
Lee
Edmonds
Ramirez
Piazza
Kent
Eckstein

The top of this order is impressive, but I've got to say the AL lineup looks vastly better.  Although the NL pitching is better overall.

Hasn't Fox been saying "This time it counts" for three years now?  Doesn't the "this time" imply it's different from the other times?  I'm just saying, perhaps it's time to come up with a new slogan, folks.

Let's go American League.  (the all-caps and exclamation points are reserved for the A's - sorry)

Extra innings! Woo!
I think it should go about 16 innings, just to make Selig REALLY cry that even home field advantage can't save him from having to sit through more than 9. Plus, the Duke would be the hero when he's the last guy in the pen, comes out and pitches three straight to take the game to the win.

That wistful hope said, the NL lineup is a joke. Mercy rule may be necessary by the end of the fourth.

A's All Stars
While I would love to see me some A's in the game, I think it is good that there are not.
I like our players to be low profile which could lead to less costly.

AL Vs NL
The AL lineup is so much better because the NL voting was so screwed up. Beltan, Eckstien and Piazza should not be starting. Maybe Eckstien should.Maybe.

Strat-O-Matic
Hey, I know this is completely separate but...

I'm breaking in my brand new Strat-O-Matic set tonight in honor of not watching the All Star Game.  (I hate the All Star Game!)  This is my first new set since 1982 or so.

Does anybody have copies of the 1980, 1981, 1989 or 1990 A's?  I can't find these on ebay or anywheres!

Thanks all.  Back to the game...

Quick question
Suppose Manny Ramirez comes to the plate in the bottom of the 9th (for some reason he's still in the game) with the bases loaded and nobody out, with the AL trailing by one.  What do you want him to do?
  1. Get the game-winning hit.
  2. Drive in the tying run with a sacrifice fly.
  3. Pop out, allowing someone else to win the game for the AL.

Bruce Campbell deserves his own national holiday.

by pbruins92 on Jul 12, 2005 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

'Flied out'
is correct.  Any dictionary will support that, but the dictionaries are just reflecting empirical use.

In The Language Instinct, Steven Pinker uses "flied out" as a primary example of how the mind parses grammar.  (See <http://pinker.wjh.harvard.edu/articles/media/2000_03_landfall.html>)

If you say Brian Roberts "flew out", then you'd be saying he sprouted wings and got off the ground. (Only Eric Byrnes, super-hero, can do that!)

The prevalence of "flied out" is testament to the fact that most speakers of the language parse it as a noun-derived verb, not a verb per se.  The fact that an increasing minority, including you, is comfortable with "flew out" suggests that the noun association is fading.

Okay, I gotta weigh in with some things...
  1. Tim McCarver has that... ANNOYING... cadence of PAUSING... and EMPHASIZING... the most inane... details. Drives me nuts.
  2. Fox's dirt cam? Who in their right mind ever thought it was a good idea to look up at the batter and catcher from a bug-eyed gopher's point of view? Worse yet, this is the 2nd year they're using it - didn't they learn from the first time it was used?
  3. AL lineup just looks more daunting than the NL... it has for a couple of years now.

by tmail on Jul 12, 2005 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

If the AL holds on, it'll be...
...what, eight in a row?

Despite it's unique status, it is one game where anything can happen. But I wonder why it's lended itself to long winning streaks by one team. There's times when the AL wins several in a row, then the NL wins several in a row. Is the AL that much better right now? Or is it just an amazing coincidence...

Rogers coming in to pitch
Ugh. I'm going to lose a lot of respect for Francona. He's on the squad, but there's no reason the manager has to let him play.

Seriously.
He should be the LAST pitcher brought in, if at all.

I have to agree with this....
Rogers was voted in by the players. Sure, it was before the incident, but he was voted in nonetheless. If the players all called Francona and said "Don't play him", that would be one thing. But the guy earned his trip.

With that said, I hope the NL team ties up the game here against him. GO NL!!! :)

There's no crying in baseball!

by gigglingone on Jul 12, 2005 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe he earned his trip
but Francona's doesn't have any obligation to play him.

He also has no obligation to punish him either.
He's just the manager of an All-Star team, not the administer of punishment for Major League Baseball.

He's the manager.
If you player acts like an ass, it's not out of line to bench him. I think given that he has a number of guys who won't be getting into the game, it's not necessarily unfair for him to pick a different guy to get into the game. Francona has to pick SOMEONE to pitch, but why does it have to be Rogers?

Because he's there!
And as I said before, the matter is not in Francona's jurisdiction. Rogers is an available pitcher, so Francona will use him. That's all.

sure
He earned the trip, and Francona can't kick him off the team. But there's no requirement that he play, especially now in the "this time it counts" era where some of the pitchers won't get used. Rogers gets to play and Duchscherer doesn't? BS.

by rubin sierra on Jul 12, 2005 8:04 PM PDT reply actions

that seems awfully optimistic
Chavez, Crosby, Harden, Street are legit all-stars if they don't get hurt or slump. Maybe Haren too.
But I can't see Swisher or Kotsay making it next year. There are just too many outfielders who mash, not to mention those who get in on reputation.

Get used to it, kid.  Is '73 your birth year?  That would add up.

Here's how it works.  When they remake an old movie, that's cool. But when they remake a movie you actually remember watching when it was new, then it's annoying.

The older you get, the more old movies there are that you actually remember.  If you were born in 1973 then you're just reaching the age where they're going to start remaking movies from your childhood.  Someone who is 14 now isn't annoyed by it at all.
