AN Day Update

Thanks to all of those who have bought tickets for AN Day at the Coliseum, Part Deux.  The game is on August 13th, and I wanted to confirm that I have everyone's order who placed it before the deadline of July 1.

Below I've listed your screen name and number of tickets I have you ordering.  Please note - the first group of ticket buyers are not listed here because if you ordered in the first group of 50, you should already have your tickets - if you don't email me immediately.

If you PayPaled the money and ARE not listed here, you need to let me know by Wednesday, July 13 at 12 p.m. PST at the latest as that's when I will be calling the A's to place the final order.  It appears as though we're going to have quite a large group.  116 appears to be the final count.  I also have three special guests lined up and possibly a fourth.

Here are the screen names and number of tickets I have for the second round of orders.  If you are NOT listed here, email me ASAP so we can rectify that.

Blez, I should appear
as "2 tik," correct? (I don't appear on this list at all, but should be in this group, I believe, since I was not part of the "first 50" group.)

Joe Morgan is a "joke"
http://www.sfweekly.com/Issues/2005-07-06/news/feature_print.html

"Socratic exchange with Joe Morgan No. 1, on the subject of Moneyball, base running in the 2002 American League Division Series, and the use of statistics in baseball:

Me: It seems that you almost take [the book] personally.

Joe: I took it personally because they had a personal thing about me saying Durham should've stolen second base in the game that they lost -- he stayed at first base, and they hit three fly balls, and the A's lose another fifth game.

Me: And that's the chief reason you don't even wanna read the book?

Joe: I don't read books like that. I didn't read Bill James' book, and you said he was complimenting me. Why would I wanna read a book about a computer, that gives computer numbers?

Me: It's not about a computer.

Joe: Well, I'm not reading the book, so I wouldn't know.

Me: I'm not --

Joe: Why would I wanna read the book? All I'm saying is, I see a game every day. I watch baseball every day. I have a better understanding about why things happen than the computer, because the computer only tells you what you put in it. I could make that computer say what I wanted it to say, if I put the right things in there. ... The computer is only as good as what you put in it. How do you think we got Enron?"

So I guess...

Being sorta new to the site..
What exactly is AN Day, just all the AN'ers attending a game?  Tailgating?  Special Attire?  A friendly chance to meet others on the site?  I'll be interested but if Blez or anyone else want to give me some more info I'd love to hear it.
Change is for the better. For both the A's and in life.

It's also Eck day, so it's not a game to be missed.

And I promise to bring goodies!  Every day on my walk to work this past week I picked up a few SF Weekly's with the great Joe Morgan article.  So I think I have an extra 40 to 50 copies I can hand out at the game if I get a ticket.

poisoned atmosphere of the Coliseum
At http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/story/2005/6/24/174618/562 the participants are pointed to the AN tradition of game/series predictions as lead by Alien.  Their fearless leader asks for series predictions from the McCovey faithful prior to A's/Giants sweep last month.  The following comment is staggeringly good & accurate:

"I am ashamed that I have not responded earlier to your well phrased query.  Although it pains me from the depths of my tortured soul to say so, I am afraid that it is in all likelihood an inevitability that despite the show of enthusiasm and support emanating from the hearts of their fans, the Giants will most likely be swept this forthcoming series by those baleful Athletics hailing from the fetid swamps of Oakland, California.

Oh!  Cruel fate!  How I am filled with despair when I think of young Jesse Foppert, his Sysiphean task laid before him, who from up atop the mound will hurl forth fastballs with a determined fury, only to watch Eric Byrnes, who yields lumber like Hercules against the Hydra, send said fastballs aloft to the distant heavens where not even G-d himself would hope to retrieve them.

Despite the efforts of Vizquel, the tempter of men whose acrobatics inspire awe in all those who cast glances in his direction, or of Alou the Younger, who swings forth his bat like Apollo always wary of the harsh gaze of his father, I fear that the Giants will be swept asunder by the twin millstones of poor starting pitching and ineffectiveness of the bullpen.

But yet I will watch, indeed I shall!  I will even endeavor to drag my weary bones to the poisoned atmosphere of the Coliseum, where I will watch with a weary disposition those vile yellow and green gladiators strike down our doomed heroes.  For I am a Giants fan and my spirit, while resilient, has become accustomed to the bitter draught of defeat."

Okay who wants to invite them....
...over here? They seem so sad! But I think skaldheim is the funniest. My favorite comment of his is the one from the 16-0 loss:

THERE HE IS!!!
Foppert is warming up in the bullpen!!  All right.  I want him to come in and shut the A's down for the rest of the game.  Then I want him to strangle Fassero, as a warning to the rest of the squad.

...you wonder when it's time to start thinking about saving a season that seemed lost.

AN day shopping?
Just found out I'm having twins, first kids for me and the wife, anyone have baby / toddler A's gear they want me to take off your hands at AN Day?
Dont let it collect dust now that your kids have grown up, I will take it off your hands and you will have more money in your pocket than when you got to the stadium...(that would be a world's first, wouldnt it?)

Congrats!
Twins too! Very cool.

If they're both boys you can name them Buck 1 and Buck 2. Then you really will be Two Buck Chuck.

Hey Blez, NomAd here...
Hi Blez, I sent you an email yesterday but didn't get an answer. I'm stuck in a funky (and terribly smokey - for a native Californian) internet cafe and I'm not to sure that my mail got to you. So here's my message:

Did you get my two tickets I sent for in the First Fiftey? I don't see MY name on the list for MY tix.  You got mine for Ohad which is very cool, but I'd sure like to be OTL (on the list).  I did my PayPal thing the very first day I read about AN:2.  HELP!!!

The idea of meeting all these great folks (who are almost like family to me now) is really helping me get thru the days here... yesterday we had a high temp of 106F and a low of 85F with about 60% humidity. Whew! I sure miss my cool evening breezes!

--> Ken in Bahrain (ah, that it were France!)

Homage to Ohad: "California Here I Come..." Home July 29 and at the game (if awake) July 30.
