Ginter called up.

[EDITOR'S NOTE - I was just about to put up a note about Keith Ginter being called up, but someone beat me to it in the diaries. Ginter mashed the ball in Triple-A. It's possible that he's regained his stroke and Macha, Beane and company want to get him in the lineup immediately. Of course, it's also possible that the sparkplug known as Bobby Crosby could be going on the DL. - Blez]

http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/story/13062771p-13908374c.html

After hitting two home runs yesterday, Ginter says he is getting called back up.

"Big Monday - Hitting homers in consecutive at-bats in the fourth and sixth innings wasn't even the highlight for Ginter. He said afterward he had been called up by the A's, who demoted him May 30."

Does anyone know who is going down?

My guess is that the transaction won't officially go through until just before game time. It's not posted on the mlb.com tranactions at any rate. Your guess is as good as mine, but I'd have to guess that it'll be Mark Ellis. Although, looking at the statistics, they're almost equal players.
I think Bill King and Ken Korach are fantastic broadcasters.

3 HRs, 4 walks, 10 strikeouts.  Looks to me like the same Ginter we had; put one in his zone and he hits it out, otherwise he swings and misses.

Crosby's injury isn't anything
that would haunt him after the seasons over.  He can rest the quad and be fine by ST next year.  He needs the playing time to get better

A strained muscle, especially a big one like the quad, is not something you want to "play better." The only thing to make it better is rest and recuperation. OK, the only thing legal to make it better ...

as in resting a quad for two weeks
would include all days, I assume. That's 14 days. So if Crosby is placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 11, he would be eligible to come off the DL on June 26. That way his quad would not only get his two weeks' rest, but the A's could call up someone.

I'm not saying he needs to be rested for two weeks. But if his quad needs two weeks of rest, that would mean putting him on the 15-day DL.

I once pulled my quad running the bases
(I was out of shape and hadn't properly warmed up). My thigh got all black and blue and I could barely walk. it took a couple of months to heal completely.

Now, Crosby is younger, stronger, and in much better  shape than me. but still, a strained quad is nothing to sniff at.

my money's on cruz
scutaro fills in too well at second and ss (and crosby might need rest every now and then - i doubt he's heading to the DL). of course, we could be making a trade. but if ginter's called up, i think we might send juan cruz down to stretch out and come back as our #5. glynn and etharton aren't that good. cruz has amazing "stuff", though he's been off this year. urban has a similar prediction on the a's mlb website. i think he's going down to get it together and come back as a starter.

by guy incognito on Jun 14, 2005 10:00 AM PDT reply actions

I hope so
I would like to see the a's give Cruz a shot at starting, to see whether he would work out better there.

by OaklandSi on Jun 14, 2005 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

starting?!
you mean in AAA?

as far as I can tell, Cruz has been our least reliable, flakiest pitcher, which is saying a lot. I'm all for letting him work it out in AAA.

by Apricot on Jun 14, 2005 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions

That is true
Cruz may just turn out to be a much better starter than reliever. Byung-Hyun Kim of the Rockies had an 8.40 ERA in relief, and he was about to be sent down to the minors when Shawn Chacon got injured. So they made Kim start instead, and he magically became a whole lot better, allowing just two runs in six innings to the White Sox. He still lost the game though, 1-2. Doesn't that sound famliar? :) At least he won his next game 7-3, once again just allowing two runs in 6 innings.

So I wouldn't mind giving Cruz a chance to start, since it's so painfully obvious he wants to. Maybe if we let him do what he wants to do, he'll be a better player and he'll 'try' harder.

by Melody on Jun 14, 2005 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed.
It makes no sense not to give it a try. I mean Cruz did well in winter league as a starter in DR (my purpose is not to compare DR Winter league to the Major leagues, but simply to show he has had sucess in that role).  I mean, all we would be loosing is a reliever who has an era of 8 if we sent him to AAA to stretch him out into a starter.  Why not?

They need MI help in a bad way, with Miles and Barmes out.  Could be we're getting Kennedy and one of their surplus OFs in return (for Garcia and Scutaro).

I agree
Even though players make a lot of money (and therefore should be prepared for every game), it has to wear on them not knowing if they are going to be playing until they get to the park.  I would assume it would be easier to perform if you wake up and know that you are going to be playing today instead of wondering if you are going to be playing today.  Additionally, each time out for Ellis, Ginter, and Scoot is a tryout for the position and it doesn't seem that adding additional pressure on them is working.  If it had, we would have an everyday 2nd baseman already.

Ginter is getting the call against Glavine!
He is also a former NL bat who has seen thses pitchers before. And he is hot. I love the move!!!

Time for quick changes to guess the outcome
Anyone playing might want to tab Ginter with the best offensive performance.
A Beane in the hand is worth $60M in payroll

How boring
I thought maybe we'd traded Scutaro for Pedro Martinez.

There's an idea
Ginter to the Mets? Maybe they wanted to see him in action and prodded Beane into playing him tonight against them?

by OaktownTribesman on Jun 14, 2005 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure
but it's hard to be showcased when you just got back from AAA because you weren't hitting at all.  How many teams are going to fooled by that?

The truth is that the A's don't have much of value to trade except, obviously, for Zito.  The other trade bait candidates wouldn't seem to have much market value now that Dotel is out of the mix.

Byrnes - platoon player (only against lefties), inconsistent fielder, might have a little value for a team looking for a spark plug type or with a hole in the outfield

Durazo - DH-only, a point magnified by his recent injury.  That limits the market, and really does limit his value.  Plus, he's not playing now, and wasn't hitting before.

Ginter - see above.

Hatteberg - good pinch hitter and veteran clubhouse guy.  How much is that worth?

Some of these players may be dealt to clear the way for younger candidates, or to dump a little salary.  Some might be kept because we might get draft picks for them, although someone else will have to decipher the rules about that for me.  I just don't see us getting much in return for any of these guys.

I'm not saying that's what's going on
but consider this: Ginter was known to have some pop in his bat. He hit pretty well in the NL. He hardly played when he was up with the A's. In the  last 12 days in AAA he raked. Wash has worked with him to improve his defense...

he might interest a National League team...

I agree
I just don't think we will get much for him.

Trading him, once we're assured that Crosby is healthy, will clear up the logjam at second base/shortstop.  But that's about it.

all this talk about pop
is just making me want a soda.  'pop' has officially become my least fav sports phrase, just beating out 'it is what it is'
"What I'm trying to do is set our pitching up for five years," said Beane

Good point
Rincon is probably our most valuable trading chip.  Contending teams need LOOGYs more than platoon outfielders, light-hitting second baseman with iron gloves, injured designated hitters, and pinch-hitters.

Matt Watson
Poor Matt, pretty soon he'll be running a Sacramento-Oakland shuttle service...

or ...
... stopping at the outlet mall in Vacaville, walking in to Le Creuset, and driving back to the Coliseum to smash Swisher's other clavicle ...

This shoulder injury
sounds really, really bad.  No wonder Chavez hasn't been the offensive weapon we needed this year.
