Around SBN: How NBA Draft Lottery Results Affect Prospects' High Hopes

Greg Myers

Saint and I went to Fan Fest today, as well as I am assuming a fair amount of you. Well, after waiting forever in the Merch line (which next year I wont bother with, since everything good is gone by the time you get there, and we got there at 8AM!) Saint decided to get a splintered bat, I settled on a throwback Jersey for $75. (Later got a Brett Reames jersey for $50, so $125 for 2 Jerseys that combined might cost $400 online is good right?).

Saint settles on an autographed Greg Myers bat (Former A's catcher, now playing for the Toronto BlueJays, I think signed to a minor league deal this offseason). We're standing in line for the Rickey Henderson/Dave Stewart autograph session (anouther story onto itself), when we check out the bat further. We looked at the top of the bat and noticed something funny. It was a bit deformed. We then reilized what it was. The top of the bat was waxed and deformed presumably because of a ball off the end of the bat. But on a normal bat, it wouldnt deform quite like this and there wouldnt be a waxy substance on it.

It hit us. We had Greg Myers' splintered (at the handle) Corcked Bat! We even showed it to Dave Stewart and he said and I quote "There is definantly something wrong with that bat"

that's how he took percival deep for a 3-run HR that one night when we were down 2 in the bottom of the 9th.

Yeah
I remember that night.

All due to corkage, i guess. LoL.

lol
I hate to hear that and hope that its some sort of misunderstanding, but its still kinda funny.

Anyway, I met Myers last year at Spring Training while he was a Blue Jay.  He was one of the nicer players I met...kinda grizzly looking, and the nickname Crash definitely fits him.  But theres some athlets that will stand for a picture, but then theres others that actually pose and make you feel like you are one of their friends...Myers is one of those guys...

it's the little things that make me a fan...

No way....
There's no way in hell that Myers willingly autographed a game used bat that was corked.  If he is using a corked bat, he is getting rid of it, not signing it for an auction.

My theory is that he hit the Hr off of percival
Then cracked it the next day and intended to give it away, thus he signed it, then noticed it was his "Special" wonderboy bat. In horror he tossed it out.

The A's clubhouse guy, "Voose", found it and put it in the, "To be sold at some point for charity", pile.

Now I have it. I will wait until he retires to announce whether or not it is corked. I liked Crash a lot which is why I bought it in the first place. I wouldn't want to tarnish his HOF Career. :)

But, what Zonis said is true. Stewart looked at it and said, "There is definitely something wrong with that bat"

Why don't you X-ray it?
See if you can get a friendly radiologist to help you out.  Any radiologists on AN?

Babe Ruth
Bill James tells a story in the Historical Abstract about a memorabilia tour a number of years back.  One of the items on the tour was a bat used by Babe Ruth.  Players had a chance to see and handle the items up close, and our very own Hendu noticed something wrong with the end of Ruth's bat, and realized that it was corked!  Here's the passage
In 1983, a traveling Hillerich and Bradsby exhibit featured a Babe Ruth bat.  According to Dan Gutman in It Ain't Cheatin' If You Don't Get Caught, the Seattle players were admiring the bat "when outfielder Dave Henderson noticed that the round end of the bat didn't exactly match the wood of the barrel.  The end was cracked, but the rest of the bat was not.

"'That's a plug!' said Henderson.  'That bat is corked.'"

(The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, page 784)

So it looks like Myers is in good company...
