Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

11/17 Late Link Dump!

Didn't see a link dump for today so I will start my first one!

As always, please don't forget to vote for the King!

Congrats to Huston and DJ for being chosen to be part of the 47th Annual Topps Major League Rookie All-Star team!

Street and Johnson were both unanimous selections in the voting done by big-league managers, making the A's one of two teams with a pair of across-the-board winners.

2004 NL ROY Jason Bay has agreed to a 4-year extension with the Pirates.

Nine teams are reportedly interested in AJ Burnett including the Nationals, Blue Jays and Tigers. Rumor has it that two teams have offered Burnett multi-year deals including Toronto's 5-year, $50M offer (go to oaktoon's diary for a discussion on whether Zito would have a similiar deal or not in this market).

The Blue Jays' are also interested in Erubiel Durazo.

"We've talked to his agent and we'll be talking later on," Ricciardi said yesterday of his interest in Durazo. "We're keeping an eye on him. We've always liked him."

Scott Eyre has told the Giants he wants to pitch closer to his Florida home and has narrowed his choices down to the Cubs, Astros, Braves and Cardinals.

update: Eyre signed with the Cubs!

Non-baseball related link: For those of you brave the early morning, crazy lines and even crazier people to go shopping on Black Friday (aka the day after Thanksgiving), go to this website for info on store sales.

WooHoo!!
The DLD! I was wondering where it was!

Something fun and random for those of you who simply need a laugh. Not Baseball related. But it is funny! It is dark, and pretty adult, but definately funny stuff!

Something that is Baseball related. I tried to come up with something cleaver to say about Pirates staying with Bay, but I am just not very witty today! Oh well.

Another thing to vote on! This Year in Baseball Awards. We have several included, so go vote! You can vote as often as you like.

And one more completely random site. A website devoted to TV Shows that can now be seen on DVD!!

I know it is random, but hey, it's the off season!

speaking of TV shows
I just finished watching Episode 6 of lost, and am awaiting download of episode 7. What an episode man. Didn't see the ending coming. Is Season 2 really gonna be 12 episodes long only? I read that somewhere. So far, there are 2 possibilities who are fall under the "lost survivor who will be lost forever" (as the narrator put it) category. Somehow i don't think it will be either, that would be too predictable. Then again, they might anticipate people like me sayings that's too predictable and do the predictable (which is therefore surprising to me).

I hate when i talk myself into circles.....

I don't know the exact number
of shows in Season 2, but I know it isn't 12. There are normally 22-26 shows per season.

I think you're just one show behind us now. Who do you think dies? We already know the answer. :) Ep. 7 (last night's) deals with the people on the other side of the island. I heart Mr. Eko.

i can see what you are implying
I would think Mr.Eko is a life saving type/great fighter type/just overall tite character type. the few times they have shown him like hitting people it sounds so much louder. GOD I'M IN AGONY. I COULD JUST GO TO WIKIPEDIA RIGHT NOW AND READ WHAT HAPPENED, BUT I'M TESTING MY WILL POWER!!!!!

P.S. I think Wikipedia is where i read 12 episodes. Anyways, it's getting late here. Good night.

the problem with dramas
i lost interest in six feet under halfway through season two.

television dramas either go nowhere because they want to go on forever or have ridiculous plot twists attempting to keep people interested.

i hope lost doesn't end up the same as all the others but i'm sure it will.

end of season two of lost, predicted by my friend: due to some scuffle (fat dude involved), the clock counts down to zero as the show ends.  stay tuned for season three.

Yeah
I was remarking earlier this year that Lost was reminding me of Twin Peaks - about one really great season worth of episodes where they develop an interesting group of characters along with a fairly intricate plot revolving around a single problem (Who killed Laura Palmer/How to get off the island), followed by a need to drag things out by introducing unrealistic plot twists and new extraneous characters. I like Lost, but fear it's going to turn into a bad parody of itself fairly soon.

I haven't gotten around to cracking it open though. Season 2 was so heavy, I just didn't want to watch Season 1 while Season 2 was on. But I am getting the point, now that the season is over, where I need a Rescue Me fix!

Speaking of Durazo, He and Dotel are both Type
A Free AGents, so if the A's offer Arbitrration, and they sign elsewhere they will get 2 picks for each.  Although the arby part is probably not happening.

Arbitration
I think offering arbitration is a good idea for both of these guys. If they sign elsewhere we get extra picks, if they accept then we had 2 decent-good players for next year.

If they accept arbitration, I wouldn't expect them to get much of a raise since both were hurt for most of the season and before they were hurt neither one was playing particularly well.  At most they get the same salary as last year with a decent possibly of a decrease in salary.

I'm not a big fan of either Dotel or Durazo, but since we know they are Type-A's and there are teams interested in trading for them, I think it's a win-win situation.

the problem with arbi
is that if they accept, they cannot take more than a 10% pay cut (i believe). Since they each made 4.7 mil in 2005, that's about 8.5 million we'd have to pay them if they agree, and we win arbitration. that;s a lot of money on two players coming back from major surgeries. it's a risk i don't think we can take, or should. if we have that kind of money laying around, it should go toward something more useful and reliable, like a DH.

Exremely important news
I don't know how many of you have been following AFDB news, but it's a subject near and dear to my heart.  I suspect many ANers will find it interesting as well, if they educate themselves on the subject.

I know we're not supposed to get political, but it's important for all citizens to know this information, liberal or conservative.

A recent study at MIT has called into question the effectiveness of AFDBs, including the Centurion (which is the model I suggest).  However, the world leader in AFDBs has fired off a criticism of the MIT study, calling it "unbiased" and "highly suspect."

I hope you guys take the time to learn about AFDBs, which will probably be a hot-button issue i the 2008 elections.

Dotel in demand
Dotel has supposedly been contacted by the Indians, Cardinals, and Mets. So much for us bringing him back on the cheap. On the flip side, this means he might net us a couple picks.

from http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/

Dotel was ranked 31st on the RotoAuthority Top 50 Free Agents list, and Boston was picked as his likely destination.  Now comes word of three other teams interested in Dotel's services, courtesy of an unusual source.  My source's barber (in New York) is apparently friends with Dotel, as they knew each other back in the Dominican Republic.  The barber informed my source that Dotel has been contacted by the Cardinals, Mets, and Indians.  The best part, straight from my source:

"He also told me that Octavio is working on a record, not a record for saves or strikeouts or anything, a merengue record.  He is supposedly a great singer. Seriously."

There you have it.  It might sound a little far-fetched, but have fun with it.  My honest opinion is that this report is accurate and truthful.  St. Louis seems the most likely choice, as the club has shown great patience and has been rewarded with rehab projects like Chris Carpenter.

http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051117&content_id=1269750&vkey=hotstove 2005&fext=.jsp

The Chicago Cubs added a lefty to the bullpen mix on Thursday, signing free agent Scott Eyre to a two-year contract with a player option for a third year.
Eyre, 33, was 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA in a career-high 86 games with the San Francisco Giants, striking out 65 over 68 1/3 innings. Left-handers hit .182 against him last season, while right-handers didn't fare much better, batting .213. He did better on the road, posting a 1.30 ERA away from home compared to 4.01 ERA in San Francisco.
